    I would like to see a series where Biffa goes back and tries to re-fix some of his earlier cities and see if he can improve upon the traffic. A lot has changed in the way he fixes cities and new mods add new capabilities. It'd be interesting to see the comparison between his old methods and new methods.

      I tried that and had so many problems getting my older cities to work. I will give it another try sometime as I'm better now at getting old saves to work 👍

    I just have to say, you made me start playing my games with despawning off 24/7, and my traffic is never bad anymore! It forces me to find and fix problem areas as they arise, and I thank you endlessly for that!!

    I finally got this game a week ago now and oh boy this is much harder than anyone makes it look on youtube. I've always loved the videos but after doing this myself it really puts things in perspective.

    It is interesting how the central roundabout is Left Hand Drive but the city as a whole is Right Hand Drive. As you said at the beginning though, it did work.

      it is because it is a " magical " roundabout. two roundabouts one inside. when you make that type of roundabouts, normaly you will have one of the roundabouts going the other way. normaly they are called " magic roundabout swindon " or something like that. because in swindon there is a roundabout with this princip. i know Biffa knows about swindon

      I would have added a lane downstream of the merge point; even American highway engineers do this.

    Biffa: You know that you don't need to remove the railway to lower it...? Just update the railway to be underground... The tunnel icon with the Fine Road Anarchy mod... Since I found that out it's really easy to "hide" existing highways if you need more space, without having to remove all of it first...

      I've been really excited to prep myself for using mostly underground roadways/highways, I love the idea of a city that is all tunnels and has pop centers above ground. . . always seemed so futuristic.

    A way better city than the last one! So nice to see one that didn't just constantly abuse anarchy.
    13:45 Yes, you forced them all to cross at the roundabout because you used the "high priority" button that disallows all pedestrian crossings in the middle.

    These inner roundabouts may look great and they have a smaller foodprint than a regular one but you can also see the problem they have.
    If someone comes onto the roundabout and wants to leave at the next outgoing road, he has to cross all the lanes of the roundabout. Causing confusion and risky manouvers.
    If the traffic isn't too dense it will work in the game and would probably also work in reality.
    In reality you could also make a rule that if you want to use the next exit, you have to do a round first to ease yourself onto the outer lane. Might be difficult to get people to adhere to that though.
    I guess that's the biggest problem with roundabouts. They tende to need more space than a crossroad. And you even have it easy in cities: Skylines as you can simply delete buildings that are in the way.
    Try to get that to fly in a real city.

      @@muammarraihan9351 Yes, real life roads do also have dedicated turning lanes. Yes, they work just as well in real life as in the game. They separate the traffic doing the right turn, which is quick and easy, from the straight and left turn, which needs to take more time to find gaps in the opposing traffic.
      In some jurisdictions, in signalled intersections, you may even be allowed to turn right on red when there are dedicated turning lanes.

    Oh, I can see some brilliant use in those highway roundabouts around 5 minutes in. It forces highway incoming traffic into the innermost ring on the roundabout, allowing the higher speed traffic quicker access to the inner lanes, while other surface streets can still access and get into outer lanes. Seems like it would work best at a slightly larger scale, but would afford the option of keeping all 3 lanes in concurrent use; getting people into the circle as quick and many as they can.

    I'm sure there will be a thousand comments about it, but Priority road removes all left turns from a road, to keep it from crossing over.
    Might not be as big a problem in a city with more junctions but it'll definetly force more roundabout use on the main roads in this one

    Another way to solve traffic is to make sure ALL YOUR TRAIN CROSSINGS either go over the road with a bridge or under the ground underground. This way there is NO RAIL CROSSINGS stopping traffic EVER.
    EXCEPTION: Country roads and or OUT OF city limits (as in city outskirts)

    31:22 The intersection with your timed traffic lights got overwritten and the top and bottom steets now have three lanes each where people have to go right. The intersection is basically broken for those two streets.
    You even looked at the traffic lights, but ignored the lane arrows

      @@BiffaPlaysCitiesSkylines but right beforehand you made a long priority road (on the north south axis i think) and removed all crossings, so huge parts of the city got cut of for pedestrians, i think you should check and add some crossings back in, like you did on the other long axis.

    those weird roundabouts with the inside ramps used to amazing to keep the roundabouts from getting jammed, but when they changed the traffic logic to prefer bigger/faster roads it doesn't make much difference which side you throw traffic at a roundabout; it only matters how easy it is for traffic to exit

    When you use Ctrl+Shift+Click for a high priority road, traffic manager makes it so that cars can't cross over eachother. So for right hand drive for example, at junctions it will only allow cars to go straight ahead or right - not left, because they'd cross the path of the oncoming traffic. Also removes pedestrian crossings 😊

    @ 31:19 when you ctrl+shift+clicked you took away all the pedestrian xings for that whole road. The only remaining crossing is all the way down at the central roundabout.

    Good episode, got a tip. You turned on crossings during this episode on both sides, because you wanted the pedestrians to have the option to cross the road. But because the connecting roads also have crossings, you only need 1 crossing over the big street. It migth be more economic for the vehicles.

    Hello mr.Biffa,Sir. I was looking out for some traffic fix right the day befor you signed up with episode 100. I loved it how you where turning 'rounds about' the maze of highways, roads and roundabouts during that city. It was so big and you only took a look on some spots at the entire map. I guessed it would take you hours to st up any concept to that city,complex what ever that was. Very nice map to made look good and not to get fixed any time. But you did, as always, a good job. Anyway, the traffic fix is back, did quiet miss that for a while as i said.
    In this city here i guess the mainproblem could be, that there is only one entrance road to the map itself? You did major changes but all of a suddon the population was dropping 50k and so manny houses had been abandot during this 29minutes change plus some timelaps during the whole process. As there are less people in the city, there isn't that much traffic left to take care of. But why this drops so drasticly i can not explain. You also did a nice canges to the railway and i guess one pedestrian tunnel. It totaly dies to the anarcy mod, and flows right into the metro if i was correct there. I would like to see after the next teaport episode a revisit to this map cause you wanted to come back to the last broke city, let this map be the episode 100 of the hearts to be continued once or twice again. I would be very pleased with that.
    As i said so manny times now, love your content.

    As for pedestrians. I place a timed traffic light dedicated for them. One second for the crossing and ten to fifteen seconds for the rest of the traffic.
    It works very well when there are many pedestrians.

    The roundabout connectors were all one way in each direction, you turned 3 lanes of traffic going in one direction into a single lane, the other 2 lanes are dedicated to turning off the main road now. Hence why the trucks no longer had the same capacity to the commercial district, until the game caught up.
    There’s also way too many junctions all over, a third of them can go and consolidate local traffic to thoroughfares. There also a distinct lack of pedestrian/bike paths

    At 12:57. That road there has its lanes setup as 2 straight on, 1 to the right. That would make it so there one lane off and 2 lanes onward to the roundabout. It stops cars crossing over traffic and forcing them to go round the roundabout. Not sure how it’ll work in practice but in theory, it could keep traffic flowing
    Expanding on that idea. All the roads in between the roundabouts could be setup so that no traffic could cross over. As if there’s a permanent medium stopping crossovers. The roundabouts would get busier but the main in between roads won’t have to worry about traffic in the middle of the junction.

    i usually hate circular city designs, but actually thinking about it in terms of train lines, it sorta makes sense to build the roads in a similar way, where you have circle lines that connect branch lines from a city center.
    now if only city skylines could actually do trains properly we could build cities that make sense instead of assuming that cars are literally the only way to travel even medium distance

    17:30 I would honestly just remove the middle crossroad. If they want to go straight they can just go round the roundabout anyway.

      you're right. it's just a pointless road that only increases the amount of junctions in the roundabout. And if traffic shifts to there the middle intersection will back up.

    I got to say, I like all the little montages better than just jump cutting to the end. It makes the hole video feel more structured. I hope the extra editing effort isn't that bad so you could do it more in the future.

    For the asymmetric roads, I would put the straight lane on the centre lane, rather than the right lane as you have done, because the objective of splitting the traffic there is because the people turning right can get through quicker than the people waiting to cross both lanes on the cross road. So, giving the right turn its own lane keeps them ticking through faster.

    City went from 200k to 144k Population.
    Also, the most important fix that city needed only was the "keep going" on highway into roundabout entrances. (As well as getting rid of the redlights and bad turning lane on main roads obviously).
    The timelapse at 4min was also pointing out one single blocking point resulting in most of the city traffic jam. And funnily enough that point has not been dealt with.

    The reason those roads were being made to turn right is that you had just made the road a priority road, so no intersection will allow cars to cross the main road, except where you specifically change it (thus why the traffic light stayed the way you had it).

    There’s a mod on the workshop now called improved lane connections that automatically does lane arrows as you put roads down

    5:30 honestly I think the inside roundabouts look good but I think they should pretzel them and make the entrances smoother... By swapping the lanes so they exit AFTER the other side of traffic exits you can make the loop wider and kinda make a swirl pattern so traffic has a smoother transition from the bridge to the roundabout.
    Also I hate 90° entrances to roundabouts, I'd rather use one way roads for both entering and exiting the roundabout.

    @ 28:00'ish when you're trying to deal with the cross roads... Since there are nice large round abouts both directions from the crossroads I would just make all the roads have to turn right, so they don't need to try cross the main road. They only have to go a bit further around the round about to come back and then turn right to get back on the road they were traveling up.

    I'm personally quite fond of the kind of roundabout where the highway merges on the inside, but in order to truly make them work the roundabout itself needs some lane management as well, going from 3 to 2 lanes and back with the on- and offramps.

    At 13:00, it's not doing the turning because you need to go into traffic managers settings and define priority road settings. The default is to not allow left turns on priority roads.

    Biffa - have you ever considered fixing a city like this made in vanilla no mods then TRYING to break it after your fixes (ie Traffic manager it) ?? I think itd be a great twist on the traffic ones esp with citizens 150k+, as long as traffic is 50-60% before the fix it should be a challenge.... Love these videos keep em coming please :)

    5:30 I would consider those roundabouts to be decent, but the flow gets mismatched a little. It's like if you had water coming in you would want it all going from one end to the other so it's smooth with no stopping or collision. What should be happening is that all roads leading off the roundabout are on the outside and all roads leading in to it are on the inside. You can then lane mathmatics it like any road with off ramps to stop bad driving, or just use lane management to not have people jam up like they always do in vanilla skylines.
    I still wish I could make some junctions/roundabouts for you that are compact and high capacity. Making efficient things is something I enjoy.

    I find it very funny everytime you imply that vanilla game is easy mode because of traffic despawning. While having traffic manager (and other mods) installed makes it easy by itself. You guys on PC have no idea how lucky you are with all those mods. On Ps4 the game is, sometimes, barely playable because of all the wonkiness of the traffic engine. Line mathematic itself doesn't fix much. In vanilla, straight lane arrows are your enemy... Great video btw Biffa.       That's why in my mind I balance it out by using despawning off/hard mode for traffic. Imagine no despawning on console! Yikes 😜

    Biffa, i've noticed you do lane mathematics wrong quite a bit.
    When you've got a 3 lane highway leading past an exit, you don't limit the lane after the exit to 2 so that they all match up when there's another joining further down the line.
    What you should do is add a fourth lane a ways before the exit which is a dedicated turning lane, so that the straight-going traffic isn't hindered in any way.
    Same goes for a lane joining the highway; 4 lane highway leading out if the join where cars can merge for longer stretches of road, and then a bit further down reduce back to 3.
    If you limit a highway to 2 lanes, you're essentially forcing people who don't need to, to change lanes, instead of just the ones who DO need to.
    And since there will always (mostly always ;) be more vehicles passing a highway exit than taking it, it's best to let the larger group go unimpeded.

    great video. Maybe noteworthy that the population at went down by 40K and at some point 50K which is like a 20% reduction in traffic just from that population decrease. Maybe not forget to do some other TLC in the city.

    Hi - it may be pretty but the issue is you join on the inner circle and you have to change lanes spiraling outwards to exit of, that will mean either you change multiple lanes making lots of cars stop / or wait for lots of cars or you end up going around 2 times, pretty wastefull as far as time and motion
    Maybe high higher level lanes should be wider apart and they exit to the outer roundabout lanes as normal
    Might be time to do a small test city and try the 2 different roundabout methods

    It’s easy to load because of the ocean. 1 simple mesh, that’s it. Nothing more.
    That’s why I like island maps.
    Always play island maps if you care to improve your FPS.
    Very easy to load and very easy to create smaller cities rather than 1 big dense city that will drop your Frame rates.
    If the map is all land and dense trees everywhere, then it will take longer to load.

    Perfect traffic in cities IS possible - first, crush all automobiles. Second, issue everybody unicycles -- you won't get very far, but it'll be fun to watch.

    Here in Norway roundabouts is not light regulated so you end up with when it is rush hour the traffic flows only one direction and if you want to get to any place that is not part of the flow you are out of luck as you will be waiting until the rush hour is over...

    I know this is an older video, but for roundabouts with a connecting road on the inside, I like to use the lane manager to force them onto the inside lane and go around, then they can change to the lane the want somewhere else while they’re already on the roundabout.

    I spotted an issue when you do the asymmetrical lanes. You change them to one for right and straight on and another one for left but you should instead do one for right and another one for straight on and left because they will cross the 2 ways if they go straight on anyway so it's the same as going left but going right is just crossing one way so less cuts. It could help the trafic a bit more :)

    Biffa, what I'm curious of is how the traffic becomes once you enable despawn again after the entire fix.
    If it was originally 64%, how much better does it become after all the hard-mode fixing has been done?
    At the end of next video, before closing it off, can you enable despawning once again and show us the result??

    At 17:30 you can see the cars completely ignore the roundabout and taking the one-off rap to get around
