    Excellent conversation, sir!
Like Dr. Harrelson, I'm a convert to Catholicism, after growing up in a very conservative synod (Wisconsin) of the Lutheran church. I had sound catechesis as a youth, but the Lutheran church lacked something I couldn't identify or answer questions I couldn't quite articulate. Now I realize, what was missing was about 1500 years of sacred tradition and theology.
Oh, and I recently started smoking a pipe, thanks to the evangelization of Dr. Harrelson, and I'm enjoying a new blend of tobacco, St. Michael's Holiday, thanks to the evangelization of Jimmy Akin. Got my pipes from the Country Squire in Jackson, Mississippi. Got the tobacco from the Ash and Ember shop in Arkansas.
You're on the right path, sir, Faith and Reason will bring you Home.
    God bless you, sir.

Hi, i love this conversation you had with Dr. Alan. May I suggest that you find a Catholic church near you that has an Adoration chapel and go spend some time there in prayer or just sitting quietly. The best thing in the world imo is sitting with Jesus! That peace and presence of God in all those cathedrals is from Jesus fully present in the Eucharist. May God bless you.

Regarding the conversation starting around the 32-minute Mark, salvation outside the Church...check out paragraph 846 in the catechism where it is quoting from Lumen Gentium. Earlier this year I had a very fruitful email exchange with a Dominican father DC at the house of studies which was very helpful in clarifying this position for me. Like most things with Catholicism, there are layers and layers to learn, historical context etc. I'd be happy to forward some of that material if you gentlemen were interested.
And a final note about looking for something "weathered and ancient", Jeremiah would agree:
" Ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it, then you will find rest for your souls". Find the church who has the authority to teach you, not the church who agrees that you have the authority to teach it.

The fundamental difference between Catholicism and protestantism isn’t the issues you’ve discussed- it’s the gospel, and how a person is saved. Dr. Harrelson is a historian whom I do appreciate for many things, but on this topic, he is wrong. The issue now, as it has been in history is, how is a person saved. The Catholic Church teaches now as it always has, that a person has to have faith, but also must offer their own good works along with faith in order to be saved. Protestantism says that a person is justified by faith in Christ alone, and not of any good works. There is no other issue that is more important than this.

What does Paul mean when he says "work out your own salvation with fear and trembling" in Phil. 2:12.
Matthew 7:16-20 "You will recognize them by their fruits.". What does this mean?
Even Demons believe in Christ, so what makes a Christian? What is faith without works other than DEAD.

Read James 2 26 faith without works is dead. Remember the Bible came from the Catholic Church. Only the Magisterium of the CC can infallibly interpret Scriptual verses. I remember one Baptist Pastor was unsure of how to interpret a particular verse . So, he consulted another collaegue. Both of them differred in their interpretation. So they mutually agreed to consult with a senior Pastor. They didnt agree with each other. The first Pastor studied ancient Christianity and converted to Catholicism eventually.

I am definitely not coming from a place of trying to “one up“ somebody on a theological issue. But the real matter at hand, I said before, is one of “how”is a person saved. Is it by the Roman Catholic definition of works and grace, or is it by faith alone in Christ. Martin Luther did not Invent justification by faith alone. It literally jumps off the pages, old and New Testament. As far as the interpretation of James, I admit it looks on the surface that he is saying, you must have works plus grace to be saved. But taken in context, when he is speaking of Being justified by Works, whom is he referring? Justified by God? God knows our heart, whether we truly believe in Christ. James was speaking of our faith being genuine in the sight of men. As James stated, Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness. Abraham had no inherent moral righteousness in himself. That is plain to see in the Scriptures. God and God alone must do the work of saving us. If we add one stitch to the garment of our salvation, as Spurgeon said, we ruin the whole thing. Debates over preference and styles, and what we “are experiencing“ in any particular denomination or church is fruitless. The real issue is salvation.
