Im sure nobody wants too know about my pathetic ambitions that will never come true. Take cae guys!! Awesome plane.
John Garrand Save up about $150 go down to the local Aero Club (if you have one) and ask to do a trial flight, they offer short 20-30 minute flights for about that price, you do the landings, take offs and about anything you like in the air. You wont regret the adrenaline rush of landing I tell you that.

Listen to yourself, it is not about money or how old you are, it is only about will. The fist step, is to do what cinamin45 told you. Do not worry about money, live your dream... and life will give you opportunity to have money. That is what I am doing right now. Not rich, and about same age as you, I save all I got to take flying lessons. I know that I will realize my dream. It does not matter how, I know I will succeed. That's it! Do the first step. I was like you once. I was 42 before I decided not to settle on being poor. That's all you have to do. NOT SETTLE. After you truly decide that, the rest just happens. I went from struggling and seasonal work to a six figure salary. You can too. Period.
I made my first solo in 1955 in N3531N at St Charles Airport, MO. $6.00/hr for the Cub (included gas & oil) and $3.00/hr for the instructor. Soled in 8 hours and got my private ticket in 41.5 hours, all in a Cub from a grass field. The written test was 50 multiple choice questions, and my 3rd class physical was given by the family doctor. I recently gave up flying since the cost of renting an airplane was eating up my social security budget.

You can learn more from good instructor in 20 min than you can from a bad instructor in an hour. CP/AP 50 yrs 2k hr TG/bush. 4k TT Please allow me to illustrate. My friend has 3k hrs as an instructor. 6k TT. He hadnt flown in 2 yrs and needed a bienniel. A 30 year old female instructor with 600 hr total time told him that he required THREE HOURS of dual before she would sign him off. Guess what he did. He found a 77 yr old instructor that owned his own airplane and they went out and started a friendship.😎 start asking for rides at a "grass strip"👍

See a lot of comments here about the engine quitting @ altitude. Well the Cub is nothing more than a powered kite, so you just glide her in. Safe airplane.
If the engine fails at altitude you glide to the nearest field. You cant restart the engine, now there are ways of using the wind to torque the prop and maybe restart the engine, but you are not supposed to do that with the normal cub engine.
I’ve owned two of them , sooo much fun .go up on a windy day , that will get your attention. Bottom line the cub will teach you how to fly , you will be a better pilot.

+battlehrfred I'm sorry I am not 100% sure what you are mentioning, but there's a pulley for the aileron cable on the wing at 0:39. The pulley bends the aileron cable around from the wing strut, to the aileron. There is a second cable that runs through the wing and connects to the top of the aileron.

They cost more on the ground than it does to fly them. Hangar space, insurance, taxes, annual inspections and runout on the cover. A new cover job will run $3-5,000, that is if you can find someone who will do it any more.
Here's an answer from somebody who actually owns a Cub. Hangar rent is 150-1000 a month depending on where you keep the airplane. Maintenance tends to run about 1500 a year depending on how actively you replace older items. In the last five years I've spent over a thousand bucks on new exhausts, 150 on bungees and bungee covers, 200 on an ignition switch, 100 on a canvas seat and 500 on a tailwheel. The annual inspection itself is about 500. My insurance is 700 a year. Fuel is no big deal - four gallons an hour. I have permission to burn auto gas, but it's almost impossible to find without ethanol, so I run Avgas anyway. I'm not sure where Jim came up with his $5000 recover number. It would cost me that much just to have somebody spray rejuvenator on my fabric. Cover and paint alone, without accounting for the cost of inspection, repair and replacement of components, is easily $20,000 or more. The materials alone cost 1500-2000. The good news is it's not something you have to do very often. Mine was covered in 1989 and it's still doing very well. If I keep it, I'll restore it within the next year or three.
Yes it’s based at KPOU it just sold last week, still based at KPOU. I’ll miss flying it! But I am happy for my instructor who sold it, and the new owner! It’s a great flying airplane!
This Piper Cub has a Continental A65. The airplane is a J3C65 the the “C” indicates the engine manufacturer which is a Continental and the “65 indicates the horsepower and variant of the engine. There are J3F’s and J3L’s which indicate Franklin and Lycoming engines but are more rare to see. Later on engine upgrades were offered using other continental engines like the A75 (75hp), C85 (85hp), C90 (90-95hp) and O-200 (100hp) were certified under supplemental type certificates.

Justwantahover yes, around there, it also only cruises at about 70mph

That's got to many gauges for me to operate. Are they the same air brakes on a 18 wheeler?

if the engine fails under power and the prop stops.... bend over....and look for a good landing spot.

All students would probably benefit by learning to fly with no radios at uncontrolled fields. Low and slow. No auto pilot, no ipads.
