Amazing! To play this song requires mastering one of the most the difficult techniques: the meri = partial covering of the holes for notes in between the 5 main ones, D, F, G, A, C. Covering just a bit too little or too much and not softening your breath enough, the meri note will be out of tune or worst muted. The last hole can produce 3 tones: D (full cover & strong breath), D# (tiny gap & soft breath), & E (1/2 cover & medium breath). Quickly shifting between main & meri notes is very hard..
me watching the video was like "is he playing althis on a 5 hole shakuhachi ? ... it looks like ... holly crap he does but how ? ..."" reading your comment "" ...oh .. this is superhuman" !!!
@@istvankardos8440 A long lifetime of practice plus you can do a ton with one of those with partial-holing and bending notes at the mouthpiece. It is MUCH more flexible than the silver flute you played in high school.
As a novice, budding shakuhachi player, I can assure you that to play something like this on a shakuhachi is astounding, to say the least. Extremely difficult instrument to even get a (pleasing) sound from.
I play shakuhachi for 2 years. It is intrinsically difficult for a shakuhachi to play in jazz way...since it's not designed that way. You you can play only 5 notes in an octave with only finger move. To cover 12 notes you need to lower head to help. Hozan has incredible mastery. But I do prefer shakuhachi playing in intended way... You can argue that there are no limitation for any instrument. However I think there are certain way in which shakuhachi presents more potential space and power. Playing jazz like this, shakuhachi is kind of trapped.

Thanks for the info
You seem to know a lot. I wish you all the best in life.
Actually too true, on point, Mr. Hozan is a true master, pulling this piece out in such a flawless way

Absolutely MAGNIFICENT!!!!

Such brightness and joy...

In the end, it's always about the person, not the instrument.
No doubt.
this video take from Hi Vision Analog Broadcast

"Modern"

Sorry but I prefer the shakuhachi played as was initially intended.
You and all of us have come to this day thanks to change
He could use a little practice.
Personally I think he did great
