My name is Jens Larsen, Danish Jazz Guitarist, and Educator. The videos on this channel will help you explore and enjoy Jazz. Some of it is how to play jazz guitar, but other videos are more on Music Theory like Jazz Chords or advice on how to practice and learn Jazz, on guitar or any other instrument.
The videos are mostly jazz guitar lessons, but also music theory, analysis of songs and videos on jazz guitars.

But don't forget to play (a lot) BLUES !
Excellent tips. Im a big fan of play through triads on the white keys to learn your scale numbers. Learn that oattern in and out, then as minor, learn to sharp the 7 and then to sharp the 6. Exactly as you say.

Heck yeah! That definitely takes care of pretty much every chord I’ve ever used in a song. Once again fantastic content from you.
Wow never thought of it that way! Makes total sense
Love this!
Glad you like it 🙂
Hi Jens another great lesson in short vid. 😊
My hero 🫡
true
Wicked !
I mean... pretty much every scale in existence is some version of these three. Unless you are talking phrygian dominant or the altered scale, or some wild nonsense. Even with the altered scale, you play it as a melodic minor off the flat 2.
You have any idea how long I’ve waited for this answer to help me with the worst writers block I’ve ever had? like seriously… 😐
I got excited about only needing three scales and then I got scared again by words like dominant and Lydian!
I hear you. Much as I appreciate these Jens and the other teachers - if someone is at the level to learn just 3 scales - then the rest of this will go right over their head.
Well, I can't start every video with explaining how a guitar is tuned, just to make sure everybody can follow along. If I look at how the video is received then it is pretty spot on for it's audience.
Even if you don't know how to improvise over chords like that then being aware that it is a part of something that is not endless is probably useful.
It’s reliving once you realise the major scale IS literally the seven modes
No need to be scared. They're just words - technical terms, just like any other profession or trade has names for the tools they use. If you hear a word or term you don't know, just look it up. It's lots of fun (well it is for me anyway). There's a lot of satisfaction to be had from working out or learning something new in Music - no matter how small. I can guarantee you. Best of luck :)
When I first started watching Jens' videos, I didn't understand a single word. It made my head spin. But I just kept watching him anyway and little by little absorbing some basics. Now, I am the "jazz expert" among my rocker friends, even though my level of knowledge and skill is laughable compared to you real players.
With all that I still cannot get the jazz sound in my playing, worked throught the standard, praticed improvising but getting now where
Learning Jazz is learning a language, it is not a few scales 🙂
@@JensLarsen of course, I've learnt a lots, thanks to your videos and knowledges but I still cannot understand the concept behind jazz and bring them to my playing
Id recommend learning a lot of jazz songs . It helped me understand how the writers thought and phrased their music.without knowing scales I was able to get that jazz sound because of the muscle memory learned from all those songs.
I felt the same. Jens’ roadmap course helped a lot. It’s all in chromatic notes/enclosures and phrasing
Nice, i just got into studying more how jazz works. The major modes i know inside out, i need to revise 2-3 shapes of the harmonic minor and really learn melodic minor. But by the way, melodic minor ascending right? You are not refeering to the classical version where it is different while descending, am I correct?
He is refering the melodic minor ascending and descending.
Hi Jens, thanks for all the info. Can you explain a little bit about how the harmonic minor scale fits over a dom b9 chord since the scale has a minor 3rd or a #9 and a major 7th! I definitely see a minor/major 7 chord in that scale. I must be missing something! Thank you. And btw do you do lessons via zoom? 🎶🥰🎸
Hi Tina, the V chord with the b9 is on the 5th degree of the scale so in C harmonic minor it is a G7(b9).
Glad you like the videos. I don't really teach one-on-one. I simply don't have time. The best I can offer is my course where you do get feedback if you post videos of you playing the different assignments.
You can request an invitation to check it out here: bit.ly/JazzGtRm
@@JensLarsenwow thanks for that! Scales within scales! Mind blowing! Ok well I’ll keep watching your videos. I’ve saved all of them. ❤
Dorian sounds better on Tonic minor chords. Doesn't the 7th in melodic minor clash with the flat 7th in the chord???
Most tonic minor chords don't have a b7
Don't forget to add chromatics if you want to sound like famous bebop players.
