Joe Postove Gables was a good actor and I'm not taking that away from him, but much of his fame was the old Hollywood studio propaganda which hyped many of the actors of that era. By earnings and number of "fans" due to the post war baby boomers, McQueen wins out hands down - McQueen was the first actor to be paid over $1 million a film and his estate upon his death was over $30 million which is over $70 million in today's money AND his name is still earning $7 million a year 35 years after his death. Can you say the same about Clark Gable?
Got to watch a pristine copy of Sand Pebbles at a weeklong celebration of MCQueen's work at Lincoln Center years ago. His son Chad, with his children, Nelle McQueen (his ex) and a few co stars were in attendance all week. During the intermission of Sand Pebbles, Chad passes me in the lobby- I had spoken to him a couple of times during the week- and I whisper to him " Your Dad is badass in this film" He responded " Yeah it's a good one, huh?" Only in New York.
I prefer the old movie stars but Steve McQueen is one modern day actor I let into my world he is great and inderrated. Richard Burton too but not many of them are so good anymore!!!!!!!
Love With The Proper Stranger with Natalie Wood.......one of my favorite movies, starring SM. Seems to be not a well known one. He plays a somewhat tough guy, but a softie at heart. What a great human being.
Steve McQueen was one of many in Hollywood who was a student of the legendary Martial Artist/Movie Star Bruce Lee. Others included: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar James Coburn James Garner Nancy Kwan Joe Lewis Dean Martin Chuck Norris Sharon Tate
You are missing WHY they keep guessing the famous actors. These shows pick actors who are premiering a new movie that week in New York. The panel reads a new movie opening that week and who stars in it. Over and over this happens. That's Jews for you. Always cheating. I've seen Joan Crawford, Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Fonda, and Woody Allen. All had new movies in New York opening sometimes that very night. Look for yourself. They ruin everything. Why am I the only one seeing this?
The price he paid upon entering this world is truly heartbreaking. His parents abandoned him and sold him out. His story is truly devastating and he gave so much to the world inspite of the emotional and spiritual damage. I pray that he got his angel wings, what a strong and beautiful man.
He died at age 50 because as a Marine, he removed asbestos insulation from pipes aboard ship when he was only 18. This was in the late 1940s when very few substances including cigarettes and nuclear blasts were considered to be wildly carcinogenic. ... except for when the MG was in a hit Broadway play, or was starring in a television show (preferably on CBS) or was a popular singer (they never guessed Julie London in her multiple appearances), or a star sports figure or a famous political figure. Bennett had said that it was a fun job and relatively easy money (no lines to learn or rehearsals to attend). But doesn't mean there was no preparation for the show. Dorothy was up to date on the entertainment world because of her column and Arlene because of her radio program. Bennett kept abreast of things no doubt in part because celebrities often write (w/ or w/o a ghost writer) books that sell, but also because he was competitive. Also he (and Martin when he was on as well as some of the other male panelists) were expected to provide sports expertise for the panel. It has also been revealed in interviews that the panelists would warm up before the show. Part of that was for one of them to think of an occupation and the others would try to guess it. The other part was that they would discuss who was likely to be the MG that evening. On a couple of occasions, I have heard Bennett or Arlene say, "Shall we say it all at once?"

Steve McQueen was great in Bullitt and The Great Escape. He also did a great Walter Brennan impersonation. What is impressive about him is that he did a lot of his own stunts.
That's a fact. He did _all_ the motorcycle scenes and stunts in _The Great Escape,_ and of course his chase through SF in that next-step-down-from-a-Shelby Mustang might've been his finest moment (if you don't count _Gran Prix)._
@@briane173 actually not ALL the stunts the motorcycle scene was shared By Steve’s recurring stuntman Bud Ekins and the same goes for bullitt (the parts where you don’t see Steve’s face it’s bud ekins) Steve’s wife nelie was adamant about having a stunt double even though Steve didn’t like having one
My mom and I and others worked on “Bullitt” with Mr.McQueen, and he was the sweetest man alive! Mr. Koester seemed like a very kind person, especially giving his winnings on the show to the kids back in his home state, and giving those ivory bracelets to the two women panelists. Steve McQueen. One of the original no nonsense, anti-hero tough guys of Hollywood. Hey people of the year 2022, this is how ladies and gentlemen behaved with manners and grace before the world went sloppy and the 'do your own thing' became a slogan in the late 1960s onward! People dressed, spoke and behaved very well!
Steve Mc.Queen sounded(much!)like a "Real Mc.Coy." Oh, and, with me being a car-chase fanatic...he is a favourite. I'm now, going back, to August, to see his television co-star.
Steve McQueen. Again the production staff thought it was tapping youth appeal. Instead it got a rare personal appearance from One Who Died Unfortunately Young [in 1980] McQueen and Michael Caine both got Oscar nominations in 1967 for best actor.
+Mike Mast Absolutely! McQueen had a relatively short career, starring in about 25 movies from the late 1950s to 1980, but he was good in all of them. He was more of a movie star than an actor, but he had a great screen presence and stood out even in his mediocre pictures. He didn't have a lot of range, but he was excellent at what he played, the typical "cool" cat who oozed testosterone. Males wanted to be like him, while women wanted to be with him.

badweetabix Steve McQueen Hollywood's first superstar? Clark Gable and Joan Crawford could have had him for dinner. i mean that in the Hollywood way.
What a legend, McQueen!
Mediocrity rules the day. And absolutely no glamour to boot. Prefer the older ones myself.
Love With The Proper Stranger with Natalie Wood.......one of my favorite movies, starring SM. Seems to be not a well known one. He plays a somewhat tough guy, but a softie at heart. What a great human being.
Agree. I think it's both Natalie's and Steve's best acting jobs. And they both were highly proficient actors.
Another great one.
Thanks! I always love seeing Steve!
Me TOO!!!!!
Steve McQueen was one of many in Hollywood who was a student of the legendary Martial Artist/Movie Star Bruce Lee. Others included:
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
James Coburn
James Garner
Nancy Kwan
Joe Lewis
Dean Martin
Chuck Norris
Sharon Tate
Steve McQueen one of my favorite guys since i was a boy god bless him
Steve McQueen had just returned to the US after filming "Sand Pebbles" when he appeared on this show. Rest in peace Steve!
A shame Steve did not fool the panel longer than he did because he disguised his voice very well.
Why am I the only one seeing this?
his soldier in the rain was an underrated lil gem, with gleason.
"Soldier in the Rain" should be a classic. With Jackie Gleason, Tuesday Weld, and I'm pretty sure Blake Edwards co - wrote the screenplay.
Steve McQueen couple of his best movies Papillon and bullet very good a one off actor extraordinaire
The price he paid upon entering this world is truly heartbreaking. His parents abandoned him and sold him out. His story is truly devastating and he gave so much to the world inspite of the emotional and spiritual damage. I pray that he got his angel wings, what a strong and beautiful man.
Semper fi Marine- Steve McQueen-LEGEND.
He died at age 50 because as a Marine, he removed asbestos insulation from pipes aboard ship when he was only 18. This was in the late 1940s when very few substances including cigarettes and nuclear blasts were considered to be wildly carcinogenic. The American Medical establishment either was ignorant or they did a good job at feigning ignorance.
ooOOHH...rraaHh!!!
@@dovbarleib3256 He spent a great deal of time going to Mexico to try to get access to laetrile treatments that were banned in the US and that he erroneously thought could help him.

Steve McQueen: Bullitt. Great film. 👏👏👏👏
The panel always guesses right because the mystery guest is always promoting a movie in town.
I've noticed that, too.
agreed i can only remember 3 episodes when they didnt & too bad Steve wasnt just visiting because the panel seemed clueless until they realized he was in the new picture in town
... except for when the MG was in a hit Broadway play, or was starring in a television show (preferably on CBS) or was a popular singer (they never guessed Julie London in her multiple appearances), or a star sports figure or a famous political figure.
Not always but mostly.
They didn’t guess the “nein” girl, Ann Southern 😎
The first contestant is a Knock-Out!
This show was amazing! Was there anybody that they didn't have on? There is no show on today that compares.
I'm pretty sure Charles Manson was never on.
One person I am very surprised did not appear given that he lived in NY and appeared on CBS television quite a bit was Leonard Bernstein.
Marilyn Monroe was never on the show.
Marilyn Monroe was the greatest celebrity not to be on the show in my opinion!! She would have been the greatest bar none!!!!
What a classy episode it was even before Steve McQueen appeared
Steve McQueen did the best imitation of Walter Brennan I've ever heard. It's also wonderful to know that Steve McQueen accepted Christ as a savior before he died so we'll see him in heaven. 🤗
Praise the Lord!!
Good luck with that!
@@Yowza78 hope you and others turn to God as Steve McQueen did before he died because we all have little time left in this life. I look forward to seeing Steve McQueen and all my favorite stars, family and friends in heaven.

Small gem of a McQueen movie: Love With the Proper Stranger
I love that film, they were all great in it.
Yes, great film. Both he and Natalie Wood turned in stellar performances.
Absolutely! Wood and McQueen starring in a picture concerning a topic not given much focus at that time.
They don't make films like that anymore
Miss wabah? IS a doll, Steve McQueen using Walter Brennans voice was priceless
He loved kids, I was younger than ten at the time and it was the summer of love in S.F. and the shoot was at SFO where us whippersnappers would play on the people movers and luggage handling systems. We had a ball! Mr. McQueen, was so patient with me when I asked him questions about his scenes where he gets shot, and how the squib in his hand was pressed to make the blood appear on his shirt. He went through dozens. Also, the glass that broke was made of sugar material, all so amazing. He even sent me a headshot!
Swell man! 20:38
@@kathleenmichlin8616 That is fantastic. He seemed like a great nice man. What a great memory for you!
A great movie he made that doesn't get much mention was "The Getaway" with Ali McGraw.
+Marc C One of Sam Peckinpah's best, even Ali McGraw's wretched acting couldn't ruin it.
Marc C I agree. My momma took us to the theater to see this when I was a young boy. She loved Steve McQueen. And Burt Reynolds.
@@RCGoetzke I thought Ali was real good in it. She and McQueen definitely had chemistry.
@@waynej2608 They sure did off the set. He was banging her soon after filming began, although she was married to producer, Robert Evans, and they had a one-year old son, Joshua Evans, at the time.
@@RCGoetzke That's showbiz.
What a dear gift.
thanx to Gary for getting this episode restored and looking good. Bits of this episode have kicked around UA-cam for years in bad shape. This episode was in particular needed a restoration.
Steve was the best of TV love him in wanted Dead or love
Mr. Koester seemed like a very kind person, especially giving his winnings on the show to the kids back in his home state, and giving those ivory bracelets to the two women panelists. I've only seen one of Steve McQueen's acting performances, and I believe it was Alfred Hitchcock's version of "Man from the South" by Roald Dahl. Such a good man and good actor.
Personal Favourite Role of Mr Steve McQueen's of Mine: the Honeymoon Machine.
Love his Timing and Delivery in this (underrated imo) Comedic Caper.
That Arab woman is gorgeous. I'm in love, beauty and brains. What a classy lady.
That was my first thought. Wow what a gracious beauty!
I agree--a beautiful talented young woman
If you're a Steve McQueen fan & haven't read the 1972 book about him called "Star On Wheels," by William Nolan, it's a very interesting read. It's mostly about his racing, but there's also an unexpected story about a can of beans & a campfire that's pretty funny. *it's out of print, but you can still find used copies of it on eBay & Amazon
Thank you Gary, once again. Until now, only the clip of McQueen was up, in REALLY muffled audio quality, at least on YT.
***** It really depends on the source material. So much of game show history is preserved only because of individuals who made recordings on early home video equipment. We're just lucky that WML was mostly preserved, and eventually rerun so extensively for over a decade on GSN!
Helen Gurley Brown was an excellent panelist. Pity they didn't use her more on the show.
Mr. Cool. Got to see him and Ali McGraw filming in El Paso, TX.( The Getaway) My hero man, my hero. And Ali, not too bad.
yellowdeer 7 Steve ended up divorcing his wife, and marry Ali after that film.
Cool. I really enjoyed The Getaway, both were excellent in it. Also, the great Ben Johnson and Al Letieri. I think it's an undervalued film, from Sam Peckinpaugh.
Arlene is just the loveliest lady !!
Steve is the most handsome, and charismatic actor of all time. RIP steve❤❤🌹🌹
This show is great! Crazy- movies were in color but TV was black and white. My family went to an opening of Sand Pebbles.
At that time certain shows were in color. Batman for instance.
.
Isn't it amazing that we have this INCREDIBLE 'time machine' called UA-cam (STUPID commercials, notwithstanding ), that allows us to effortlessly step back to the 1950's and 1960's to revisit fun little gems like this one ?? 🙂
.
McQueen was the definition of "Cool."
Oh my heart, Steve McQueen amazing man. I was just 5 years old when this was broadcast. 😊❤
Steve McQueen. One of the original no nonsense, anti-hero tough guys of Hollywood.
His film resume is nothing short of impressive, including "The Blob", "The Magnificent Seven", "The Great Escape", "Love With the Proper Stranger", "The Cincinnati Kid", "The Sand Pebbles", "Junior Bonner", "Bullit", "The Thomas Crown Affair", "The Towering Inferno", and even his series "Wanted: Dead or Alive".
***** He did.
***** Yes, with Dustin Hoffman.
Don't forget "Baby the Rain Must Fall" , co starring with Lee Remick,, A very under rated movie. He was wonderful as usual.
Steve was the greatest actor ever on the big screen !!!-----
And in "The Blob" his leading lady was Anita Corsaut, who later became well known as Helen Crump on the Andy Griffith Show.
I love Steve McQueen! So handsome. Those beautiful blue eyes. I loved The Great Escape and more recently The Towering Inferno.
This was a good one bc they had time to talk to contestants.
Steve McQueen’s signature is beautiful! Who would have guessed?!
I thought Bullitt was one of his best acting movies as well as the other ones mentioned recently
Bullitt has aged well. The cinematography, and even the clothing worn by McQueen look as fresh now as when the picture came out decades ago.
Steve McQueen. Again the production staff thought it was tapping youth appeal. Instead it got a rare personal appearance from One Who Died Unfortunately Young [in 1980] McQueen and Michael Caine both got Oscar nominations in 1967 for best actor.
yes, he was only 50. sad. what more could he have done?
Lol, I guessed the first one's occupation the minute she said she was from Cairo.
I Like the way he talks with face muscles that support his messages in words.
Steve is so cute, he tried to fake everybody out. He had the look on his face before, he started; I knew something was up.
I've always loved Steve McQueen
"The Sand Pebbles" was arguably McQueen's best movie and certainly one of his best performances.
+Robert G. I agree with you but he was also great in "Papillon".
Nope. I LOVED him in Love With the Proper Stranger, co starring with Natalie Wood, another who left us too soon..:'(
The Sand Pebbles -- Steven McQueen nominated for best actor as Jake Holman. No doubt his best and most complicated role.
The sand pebble?? Papillon? His greatest movie was the towering inferno!
The movie The Sand Pebbles was an excellent film - and very faithful to the book. (I read it second.)
Hot damn, Steve McQueen. He sure sounded like Walter Brennan.
