Born and bred in Norwich and still live here. I was 20 when this video was filmed, weird to see cars driving down St Stephens and Castle meadow.. Great to see how thing used to look back in the 80s, no one with their face buried in a mobile phone too.
Even the opening shot of St. Stephen's Street - the commercial street with all the department stores / chain shops - portrays just how aesthetically raw, concrete, 'clinical' and 'dirty' it was and still is in Norwich. That's what I love about it; no frills, just a simple, humble city full of great shops and facilities, and better still full of culture / diversity, and really down-to-earth, friendly, tolerant and unpretentious ! And yes I was born & bred here.
Agree with your sentiments. I used to commute to work in Norwich. It has so much to offer. I hope when we unlock after Covid, people will come and see the city and not just the retail areas. The little coffee shops tucked away in the historic areas were my greatest pleasure with friends or just for a bit of me time #norwichafinecity ❤
@@ClaireScarrott258 Aaww, those little coffee shops, like the one in Elm Hill (I think it's still there !). I like the historic parts like Elm Hill, cathedral Close + churches, but really prefer all the raw, dirty concrete blocks like Anglia Square (paramount to my bleak urban psyche I'm afraid !). And yes, after covid I can visit my sister who still lives there (lucky her!) and enjoy the best of British urban life !
Thankyou for this trip down memory lane. I'm currently living in Australia, but Norwich is my home and always will be. I will be returning to live in Norwich permanently in the not too distant future, and can't wait to see my beautiful city again. I know it has changed over the years but I want to walk down Elm Hill again and visit the Castle museum and just enjoy being part of it. I can't wait to get back and finally be home where I belong. I LOVE NORWICH! Thanks again😁
My home city. Some of the more modern buildings now sadly gone such as the Norfolk & Norwich tower blocks, the Malthouse car park and a few others. Norwich has always been a combination of raw and industrial and quaint and historic.
My Dad had a Ferguson Videostar at this time. He worked in Norwich, Chapelfield. I can agree it was a heavy on the shoukder piece of kit! We were extremely privelged to have a 'video recorder'!
Those roof-tops you can see in the first 2 minutes ... We got very pissed one night, so when we came out of Rizzy's (Monday night - drinks 50p) we climbed up the fire escape at the back of Sainsburys and climbed across the roofs as a 'short cut' - except the drop back down at the corner (Swifts ?) was too high so we had to go all the way back. Looking at that pitched roof above what was the co-op - I'm not sure how we made it ... ah, those were the days.
For me, this ring road at the beginning IS Central Norwich ! It has everything; abundance of shops, raw concrete blocks, period building remains, and a dose of greenery to revitalize it ! Perfection of the urban landscape !
Thank you very much for uploading this Darren. I am from Spain, have lived in Norwich for few years, and is an amazing feeling to see how it looked back those years :D I was 1 year old back then : ) hahaha.... Amazing video!!! Thanks a lot!
It was a vibrant city. No Castle Mall or other indoor shopping centres like that. At the front of McDonalds (where it is now by the market) was a wonderful fountain section (outside of a large department store called C&A) that we used to play in as kids. Occasionally someone would squirt some Fairy Liquid into it creating an impromptu foam party!
Remembers Tony the Cityline minibus driver who used to give us alternative teens a free ride on his bus. Many years later he became my next door neighbour.
An extraordinary vid. I lived in Norwich during the 1960's & 70's. While watching yr vid, I had a geat time trying to figure out where all these scenes were. AND.. thank u so much for no stupid background music ...
Thanks for sharing, it brings back memories. you were lucky to have a camcorda . Sadly Norwich dos not look very fine at the moment , its so sad to see Norwich fall.
I visited last week for the first time in two years and some things seemed different. But still has a good selection of second hand shops in Magdalen street.
You filmed on the royal arcade, I was probably working 20 feet from you as you filmed it, as I worked in baxter's butchers on the corner of the arcade and back of the inns, was just finishing my YTS lol. The cityline buses!! . Great seeing film of the fine city back then, the year me and my mates could finally order a pint legally in the pubs lol. Anyone remember chaplins?
4:35 One Step Beyond / OSB in the distance there! I used to meet my mate there every Saturday morning and we would peruse the latest C64 and Amiga games. They used to have the computers set up inside playing all the latest hits such as Barbarian and The Way Of The Exploding Fist whilst all the cassette games were kept behind locked glass cabinets on the far wall. Great days.
weirdly my best friend I mentioned in my comment, Matt, passed away on New Years Eve 2022. I miss him dearly and I really miss these glorious happy and carefree days of my Norwich childhood.
Norwich has been ruined with the road systems and pedestrianisation now, many of the shop rents are unaffordable for the business owners, Chapelfield Intu is about to go bust and a large number of empty shops are visible in Castle Mall, sad considering this city was always busy in the 80's and 90's. Great footage 👍
Amazing to see the Macintosh factory and the multi story block of the old N&N hospital. Unfortately, you couldn't take a modern day comparison video from the top of the same carpark because they have erected safety fencing.
When I see these kind of videos it makes me wonder how many of the people in them are still with us 😌
Yep, I was thinking the very same thing watching this.
Not just that but nearly every vehicle would be scrapped

I grew up in Norwich in the Unthank Road area in the 70s and 80s. Really enjoyed seeing how it was.

I wouldn't bother. We're full of foreigners now. Rummen cunts and crackheads
Have lived in Norwich all my life and will never leave here despite all the changes, it's still a great place to live. 😂
You captured a slice of history here mate. Different place now, but still home.

The old hospital, nestle factory and the malthouse car park with that bomb sculpture on top.

Can’t believe it, we were watching this, and recognised my nan when she was younger haha
Great video. Love feeling the nostalgia of looking back. If only we had a time machine! Life seemed more normal. Thanks very much for sharing.

Its good that viewers have found this old video useful. Hopefully more footage will turn up from others.

Glad you enjoyed it. It was actually a separate camera and recorder. It weighed a lot to carry that! Ferguson videostar. Full size VHS !
It was worth it though,You can show your grandchildren.@@darrencoe5795
Thanks a lot for uploading this super video. I just adore Norwich and I miss it so much.
Ah the Bell Hotel ..... all those years ago....in my late teens spent in Norwich ❤
I live in Norwich and it’s crazy to see how much it’s changed over the years

Great stuff. Some of this looks to be Gloucester Street and Rupert Street. Thanks for uploading 👍👍
No Internet no empty shops = happy days
Used to love second hand land. A lot smaller now.
@@darrencoe5795 was in there Wednesday, had a chat with jake the owner
That house on Newmarket street is still that garish yellow!😆😉

My favourite place is still magdelen street with its variety of second hand shops and other small retailers. I do miss the second hand land shop.

For obvious reasons Claire. It's hardly a bad thing lol.
Can anyone tell me ANYTHING about any scene in this vid? It's very hard to find the locations ...
Lots of the second half is filmed on Newmarket Street and along Gloucester Street.
Hi 👋 Darren. I love these kinds of videos. Do you have any more? Is there any chance of posting any more? Thanks for this great upload. Dave
Thanks Dave. I dont think I have, but if something else turns up I will post.
@@darrencoe5795 super job. That would be great. Thanks mate
Is that Newmarket Street from 9.50? I used to live there in 1989-90
Yes - filmed from the Brunswick Road / old hospital end.
I’ve been there!
2:03 - they didn't dynamite that office building and replace it with a similar one did they ??
8:57 - ALL ABOUT EVE came to Norwich !
And i was there!
it literally looks the same today
what is the huge building in the back at 1:47 to 1:51?
It's the old Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, demolished now replaced with housing.
