Working in tourism in Vienna, Austria, I once had a conversation with a middle-aged woman from the US asking me which language 'you speak here in Australia'. My answer that English is most commonly spoken there but here in Vienna we speak some sort of German left her thorougly confused - though that one woman probably doesn't represent a whole country when it comes to knowledge about where you're headed to on vacation. I guess many people in tourism can tell similar stories, regardless of country.

It's said that Germans live to work, Italians work to live and Austrians have a balance between the two. In general there is some minor animosity between Germans and Austrians but that's mostly joking about and culturally related. There is the idea of the very strict, no fun allowed, precise German and the more laid back, lenient Austrian.
Bavarian culture (South German) and Austrian culture are quite similar though, in regards to food and language, the geography is mountainous and forested, architecture has a distinct "alpine" feel to it and there is the "lederhosen" culture (google it and look at some images, you'll get what i mean). North Germany is quite different though even to Bavaria itself, generally things get alot flatter and more farmlandy north of Munich, the people and architecture become more samey and uninteresting. Frankly, and speaking from firsthand experience, North Germany, is just kinda drab and uninteresting. Apart from some really worthwhile cultural sites and cities like Berlin there is just not alot happening there. The Suburbs and farmland all look the same, the geography is flat and the people are diligent and proper workers but not much fun at parties.

To be absolutely specific on the etymology of Austria and Australia: 'Austria' derives from a Latinization of Old High German 'Ōstarrīhhi' which meant "eastern empire". The 'ōstar' part ultimately comes from the ancient common ancestor of English, German, Latin, Greek, Sanskrit and many other Indian and European languages where the predecessor of 'ōstar' meant "in the direction of dawn". 'Australia' derives from the term for a mythical continent known as 'Terra Australis Incognito' which meant "unknown southern land" in Latin. 'Australis' was the adjectival form 'auster' which means 'southern' but originally meant 'the southern wind'. The southern wind in question, the sirocco, is actually to the southeast of Rome and was originally associated with the east. Early Romans that still spoke that ancestor language I mentioned earlier called that wind "the wind in the direction of dawn" using the same word that gives us 'ōstar' in Old High German. All to say that, ultimately, the 'austr' part of 'Australia' is actually related to the 'austr' part of 'Austria'.
