Wow I didn't expect to find such a detailed video about this laptop on UA-cam.
This was my laptop in high school, although you say it wasn't really meant to handle gaming it did a good enough job running games like Baldur's Gate and Elder Scrolls.
I just found my old laptop and thought about Reviving it into a Windows XP machine to play some old games.
Thanks for having a video like this, extremely helpful.

I have a GORGEOUS one of these that I purchased new in a big rush to grab another XP when Microsoft introduced Vista. XP was always my favorite MS OS and I was terrified of getting stuck with a Vista so I ran out in a blizzard (NOT kidding...27" of snow fell that night) one and grabbed the very last one that I could find within driving distance!
It's still looks like it's never been used. I even still have the remote control for it as it is an "HP Entertainment PC".
Unfortunately Microsoft had to go and force Windows 10 upon all of us installing it automatically 😡 I will never forget that one day I sat down to turn my beautiful DV9000 with XP Professional on and up popped Windows 10! 😵😤 I went to my next laptop, a beautiful DV7 with XP Professional. Windows 10 there too! 😤 Absolutely stunned and infuriated beyond descriptive words allowable on UA-cam, I went into my trunk of my car to grab my beautiful 5340 XP machine and no sooner had I turned it on than Windows 10 got into it too 😵‍💫🤬!
There are a couple of things that caused me to be so infuriated. The first of them being that I loved XP, despised Vista, and certainly didn't want anything to do with the likes of Windows 10! If you don't have a touch screen Windows 10 is possibly the clumsiest program Microsoft ever created. I contacted Microsoft immediately and was told that they had been ABSOLUTELY INUNDATED with complaints from people about the intrusive update to Windows 10 and they were willing to 100% restore to XP or provide replacement laptops (but with Windows 10 on them which I did not want). I let them know I had three of them! The silence on the other end of the phone felt like it went down for minutes! They told me that there was nothing that they could do remotely and that they could schedule an appointment 3 months out for me to bring them in to Microsoft and have them reprogrammed. THREE MONTHS OUT!!!!! 😳
These computers were the lifeblood of my business! They were not even workable with that terrible Windows 10 program on them! It was the most horrible thing I have ever seen in my entire life! Fortunately I have a Microsoft store close by to me and I packed up the three of the things and I perched myself in the lobby, right SMACK in the middle of their lobby (!) of their very crowded store. I expressed myself very calmly and advised that they need to do something about all the computers that they destroyed.
To cut to the end result after the chase, I had to leave them there for several days and they were not able to roll the dv9000 or the DV7 back to XP Professional even though I had all original discs. The best they were able to do was put Windows 7 Professional on the DV9000 and the DV7 but they DID get XP back on the 5340. 7 Professional is able to run in virtual XP mode and it was a workable solution for the problem because they said that it was completely impossible for them to put XP back on them. I do believe that they were being sincere because there were quite a lot of phone calls to me over the week that they were being worked on.
They gave me some goodies for each like external hard drives, external mice, new padded carrying cases for all of them, and a $500 gift card for use their store. Of course, that was back when a new laptop (well equipped) still cost WELL OVER $1,800 and $500 didn't buy much of anything in a Microsoft store. All the little extras that they gave to me and unlimited lifetime phone support made me go away happy. I'm sure that they wouldn't expect me to be calling now for any phone support and only gave me the lifetime phone support bonus because they never expected me to be keeping the things for the next few decades 🤣
The 5340's screen blew and I ended up selling it for a few hundred dollars on eBay to another XP enthusiast as I didn't like having to keep a giant external screen attached to it for my own use. I still have the DV7 and DV9000 and they both run absolutely beautifully 😁 and I mean they are drop dead gorgeous and you simply cannot buy those kind of machines anywhere for any amount of money anymore!
I just purchased a Lenovo Chromebook Intel 5 with 128/8GB (SSD & RAM) and threw a 512GB SD card in it and sat down to figure out how to install Linux on it. What a shocker I was in for when I found out that Linux OS is built right in and that it's use is actually encouraged! The first thing I did was test it out by installing Kodi and LibreOffice and they work beautifully! Linux really makes installing programs so simple!
I no longer have my businesses so I really don't need so many computers sitting around so I was going to put them up for sale but the more I keep looking at them, with all the ports that they have and features that one simply cannot get any longer, I have decided to keep them. The DV7 is the noisiest thing (fan... been that way right out of the gate) and runs extremely hot so it's very good if you have arthritic hands, I have thought to myself many times. Feature/benefit 😅 Hot running laptop sooths aching hands. 😆
The DV7 is far more powerful than my DV9000 and, because the db9000 is only a 32-bit, I'm maxed out at 4 GB RAM. It was quite sufficient with XP but it's a dog with 7 Professional.
Here's my thing... I want to put Linux on the DV9000 as I think it will make the machine run more efficiently. Truthfully, for MY needs, I can barely run it with Windows 7 Professional. It's just too slow. I've tried allocating the memory multiple ways and tinkering with various settings but it's just too slow with 7 Pro.
I really don't understand the Linux OS and purchased the Chromebook so that I could learn it as Chromebooks one can wipe out and reinstall. They are somewhat idiot proof unlike Microsoft OS's, which are quite temperamental...one little change can make the machine very unfriendly to operate or even stop it dead in it's tracks.
Would it be possible for you to demonstrate how to properly install Linux on my system in a video? Or even direct me to what sort of book or video or whatever I may be able to learn to do that from without destroying my existing system?
Also, I was reading the comments below your video. My quest tonight was actually to find out what that strange looking overgrown SD card looking pop out slot on the right side of my DV9000 is! That's actually how I found your video! I typed in "overgrown SD card looking pop out slot on old HP DV9000" and your video popped up. I still have no idea what that thing is used for but it seems that it's a desirable feature per the comments.
Thank you very much for an awesome video and I did hit the subscribe button.
I hope you can respond to me about the Linux and I do apologize if my very long post caused any vision problems or irritability. 😉
    Thank you again!
EDIT/ADDITION: I just read your history with PCs and your first one. My very first PC was a Leading Edge brand PC clone. An 8088/8086 which you could toggle with a little flick of the switch (a literal toggle switch) to enable gaming because the 8086 was much too fast for video games! Can you even imagine... an 8086 being too fast for anything by today's standards! That was when the software store called Egghead Software was making a killing in the market as several people started to buy PC's for their homes and needed software to go along with them. At the time I was making very good money but I still wasn't crazy enough to buy genuine Microsoft software or the suite that was popular at that time, Peachware and some other software named after a fruit. I got Word and Excel equivalents (the names are on the tip of my tongue but just won't quite come out) from Egghead and they actually worked a lot better than the Microsoft versions. Reading your history brought back very fond memories of when I first learned to program a little bit before PC doss turn to MS-DOS and basicA turned into MS-basic and we still had complete control over our PCs. I wrote a program for my menu but even with that menu program I still found it easier just to type in what I wanted. When Windows 3.1 came out I resisted it for as long as I possibly could. I had absolutely no problem running my d-base and making mailing labels, client list of over 5,000 contacts with all of their information, making form letters, and playing Space Invaders, Pac-Man, and Centipede in between 🙂
Those were just awesome days! Thank you so much for bringing back that memory! The whole world was a much much happier place at that time.

For Linux I would take a look at Linux MINT, which is a pretty decent "starter" version of Linux.

Also, since you have had a good experience with Chrome OS, you may want to try Chrome OS Flex on your older systems. It does have some minimum system requirements that other Linux versions do not, but the installation and performance are great.

After I wrote that I reflected back to when the whole thing happened with Windows 10. At the time I found it very strange that one of Microsoft's proposed solutions was to replace my three ruined laptops with NEW laptops but ONLY with Microsoft laptops running Windows 10. It just didn't make sense then and it STILL makes no sense!
At the time I was just happy that they resolved the issue to my satisfaction but now that I look back at the whole thing I can't help but wonder just how "accidental" those updates to Windows 10 were. If they had overwhelming complaints about people who didn't WANT Windows 10, WHAT gets accomplished by giving them brand new Windows 10 computers? It just makes no sense!
I cannot help but wonder if there's something about that whole situation that we missed. Certainly not on an alien conspiracy theory level, LOL, but something brewing to ensure that earlier versions of Windows were wiped out. But WHY???
      Hmmmm

Thank you for such an instructive video. I hope you have time to answer a few questions that, for you, will surely be considered simple. I bought this exact model new when it was first available at the local Staples where I lived at the time. It was a gift to my sister. I want to keep it because my sister passed away and, well, I just want it. Good thing is over the years (since it became mine) it has never had a problem and to this very day boots just fine and even though I do not use it often I have decided to make some upgrades and this is what I would appreciate your opinion on.
It still had the original Windows Vista on it (but I did not use it but did every so often turn it on to ensure it had not malfunctions, cleaned it inside and out and I guess that is one reason it still boots and other than replacing the battery a few years ago, it has no hardware that has malfunctioned, yet) but when I do turn it on I will put in a live Linux DVD and run, say, a 32 bit version of Ubuntu or any decent Linux distro and, by doing this, I bypass the problems with IE being an outdated version and Vista not getting updates...I usually dual book Windows with Linux on my other builds anyway so I'm quite familiar with Linux and plan to use Linux as the main OS after some upgrades.
Lastly, I put a new SSD in a couple of days ago (I didn't need to clone the hard drive since I just removed it and popped in the SSD and put a nice 32 bit Linux OS on it and I have several extra SSD's around that are new and unused so might as well put one of those in the second drive bay) and it booted just fine and did so much faster. That's just with a 250 GB SSD. Since I have extra SSD's I will put a 1 TB SSD in the second drive bay and no money spent on SSD's since I already had several unopened so that is some money saved.
Question: I will replace the CPU. Based on the dv9000 (actually mine has "dv9000" incscribed on the top of my screen/monitor but it has in another place "dv9500" and I bought it new so it came like this...any difference or why two different numbers would be on the same laptop?) so, in your opinion, what are two CPU's that I can find somewhere that will work and actually improve its performance, that you would recommend (don't mind the price...just the best CPU that is available today that will work on this model). If you had to choose two CPU's (I like options), what two available today would upgrade this model?
Finally, the RAM can be upgraded to 8 GB and not 16 GB (heard it could hold 16 GB in another video so just double checking). Correct or incorrect? If only 8 GB, that is fine. I can get a couple of new RAM modules that fit this model and it will have 8GB).
In your opinion, given it will have two new SSD's installed, the RAM upgraded, and the best CPU still available today that will work in this model....when I have all of these installed, how much better, performance wise, do you think it will be since I will be using Linux instead of Windows 10 or 11?
And can the graphics card be upgraded? If so, what is the best GPU that one can get today that will work in this model?
Thank you again for a great video.

      Thanks for watching Tim!
Recommended CPUs - The top CPU that HP supported was the T9500, but the higher models up to the T9900 are all the same TDP, so if you are using a good paste and the cooling system is working well I would consider going with a higher end to squeeze some more frequency
Memory - I am pretty sure the max supported memory on this chipset (PM 965) is 8GB, but also important to note that if you are using a 32 bit OS that you can only address 4GB
OS - If you are comfortable with Linux then go that route. You will get much better performance than with Windows.
Graphics - The GPU on these is soldered, so that's probably not going to be possible. The dv9000 does have an expresscard slot, so it is theoretically possible to run an eGPU, but I would look for older eGPU hardware to try that out.

@@retropcdurham Thank you for the CPU Information. I was uncertain and did not want to place an order for a CPU before first getting an informed opinion and, thankfully, I discovered your video and it is hands down far better than any other I have yet discovered on UA-cam. Taking the laptop apart is not a problem since I am not a newbie at the basics at least.
The T9900 CPU can be found on ebay at very reasonable prices. So, getting one is not a problem. I have had not issues with the graphics yet and if this ever becomes a problem parts for this model are not difficult to find I do not think. I could dual boot and install Windows 10 but once folks learn that "Linux" is just point and click as you would do in Windows 10 (mostly...it is user friendly) and Microsoft has now a cloud version of their Office prorams like Word and Powerpoint, and that a Chromebook is a Linux operating system, then for older models like this one Linux will work far more efficiently than Windows without sacrificing anything. Plus, Linux is free.
I will order the T9900 and two sticks of 4 GB RAM. With the solid state drives already installed and zooming along fine when I complete the upgrades I don't think I will have spent even $200.
Only think I have left I want to do with this is to find out if the original TV Tuner and all the cables and thins that came with it to make it an "entertainment" computer can be used today or if there are newer parts that would work (be installed) and do basically what it was originally meant to do? Hope that made sense.
With the original TV tuner, driver/softwar disks, and antenna just opened from the plastic, surely there must be some way to get some use out of these ports and possibly the original tuner. I have not tried to see if it will work outside of Vista which did not work because, well, it is Vista and would not connect to the internet due to the age of the IE browser and updating it to the most recent available I have been unable to do. So, I just removed the original hard drive and put it away in a safe place and popped in Linux.
Any advice on using the TV tuner or can it even be used as a "TV" considering its age?
      Look forward to more videos.

@@ucty222 Using this as an HDTV is definitely a good use! As far as using an old TV tuner card, I guess it really will depend on what signals you are able to pick up. If the tuner is able to capture digital signals then that will allow you to grab a lot of digital OTA channels, but if it's an older analog capture then you'll be limited as to what you can connect

    • @ucty222

@@retropcdurham I am sure it says somewhere that if picks up digital and it an record too. Nice. Even if it didn't get digital...I think the converter units that folks had to use back then would work in the same manner. In fact, I have a converter...not sure when I got it...but it works and if needed I can get it connected and it should work just as an old Television would.
However, I am certain it has "digital " printed on on the tuner. Thus, the only issue now is if it will work outside of windows Vista.
The owner's manual says it will only work with Vista. But I know with most things can work and I will figure out a workaround if needed.
There are a lot of programs now that could get it to work in either Linux Mint or windows 10.
There is always a way but I just have to discover it.

For your graphics, there may not be Windows 10 support, so you can try the Windows 7 drivers from Nvidia. I usually try using a utility called Snappy Driver Installer Origin, which can be downloaded from the MajorGeeks website if I don't already know exactly which driver I need to use.

Great video. What did you use in the step in between to download the software before Windows 10? You can't just go from Windows XP to Windows 10?

Thanks for posting! I definitely want to try upgrading the ram. Is it possible to upgrade from 667mhz to 800?
