I had a return request a few weeks ago, they said I sent a broken iten, I said OK return it and I completely forgot about it, the other day ebay said cased closed as they failed to return, another scam they try, hoping you'll just refund and not pay the return postage
I'm currently waiting on a person to open an inad case for a power cable. I severely doubt it will get opened but is annoying to have it as a possibility. Just hope it goes past the 30 days.
@@delta250a when I started selling I used to just say throw it in the bin and I'll refund and then someone on UA-cam told me about the scam so I always pay the return just incase
Yes we always ask the buyer to return, so many people try and get a refund or a partial without a return... many go away when you ask them to open a return
@@NicHills I’ve had 3 in two months, got a new one today on a cd, i know it works I’ve ripped to my iTunes. But last month guy claimed a ds game didn’t work, so I said sorry please send back for full refund and by the way you’ve purchased from me before and had a problem, recognise your name and avatar. Haven’t heard back since
@@NicHills I think it might have been you guys that told me about this scam ages ago in one of your videos, it really helped me so thank you
Thank you so much for this video and your words on dealing with these. I had two returns last week back to back just took them in my stride and after a few sales all forgotten
I'm glad it was helpful :)
All the eBAY and paypal fees, I'm not sure why anyone bothers on these sites at all.
I photograph serial number stickers on electronics and show them in the listing to deter potential switcheroos
Me too and mark dates inside with a marker
As daft as it sounds if you did take a picture of the s/n and it did get switched eBay would not accept that!!!! Crazy I know!!
@@paulboyne8786 that doesn’t really surprise me, eBay’s logic can be questionable sometimes. Hopefully taking the photos deter some would be scammers though
@@paulboyne8786 ebay accepted this for me. i had ebay phone me and i explained i had the item returned but it had a different serial number. i had pic of serial number in the listing. so ebay refunded me. sadly they had already refunded the scammer too.
Yes absolutely, this didn't have any unique serial numbers to photograph, but it did have some marks that made it identifiable
as we talk all the time I also dread returns because like you I have had damaged returns and the old switch-a-roo returns, but like you say it's a part of doing business,
the ones I hate the most is when a buyer says faulty or not as describe so they get free return postage and when you get it back there is nothing wrong
Yes that is so annoying when they make up a reason to get the free return
Another good t shirt Nic 👍 Glad the return was 'above board'.
it is annoying but its one of those negatives you have to live with and factor into your costings much like accepting shop lifting if you had a retail shop
Cheers Nic Thanks For Sharing Good & Bad 👍
What do you do when they select a different reason to get the return postage paid? Had that a few times now.
You report the customer to Ebay and it gives you the option to state they misused the returns and then a space to write why. It’s then up to Ebay whether they agree with you or not.
Gotta discretely security tag stuff to stop ' Switcheroo ' which is a big problem especially on Electronics ! .. try melting a tiny dot on plastics in a hidden location and document it ! 👀
yea, ive had that loads, i do you tube name n shame videos on them and the scammers, who say they didnt recieve and tracking shows they did
Not scammers, just incompetent postal workers. Tracking shows it was delivered, but it doesn't show where it was delivered.
I sold a Superdry shirt recently. Size XL, new with tags. If anything, I would say it was big for an XL. Buyer had it for two weeks, then opened a return saying it was too small for them and was therefore wrongly sized, including a photo of them not being able to fit into it. I begrudgingly paid for a return postal label. Another couple of weeks has now passed and eBay have closed the return as it hasn't been posted in time. So I wasted £3.39 on post. Very annoying.
As usual, it's the couriers who are the ones who made a profit! When there is a gold rush, buy shares in companies that make picks and shovels. Those are the ones that will survive.
Hi there, i find your video's very interesting as I am new at selling on ebay, could you mention in your video's which couriers you use when sending large heavy items, this would be really helpful, thank you..
At least it looks good and ready to resell. Could be worse - could have been damaged or scuffed up, then returned!
At least you got the item back in the same condition. There were a few times they switched or returned it damaged.
There were a few times where I found that they took out the hard drive capacitors or swapped out the controller boards because it was from a drive repair shop. When I checked the website it was shut down and the guy ran out of business. Eventually things will catch up to people like that.
for electrical goods take an image of the serial number before sending
I used to sell new Electrical testing gear on Ebay and several times I had returns after the test gear had been used on a site in dirty used condition as they said it was faulty, it never was but it was cheaper for them than renting the gear, its the reason I gave up selling on Ebay..
Nick sorry to hear this item was sent back,I ordered a Snooker Cue a while back for a friend and in the EBay sellers listing he stated he doesn’t except Returns, what are your thoughts on that.
I think if you are a private seller then the regulations don't apply, but as a business we have to accept returns
Got 180 quids worth of coat coming back rhis weekk, more gutting because ebay sales are down these days...
Ouch, sorry to hear that Heather
I remember that time one of your customers sent back the ‘broken’ monopoly board 😅returns are super frustrating, but as you say part of the job. I think the most frustrating thing is the false INADS to get a free return.
I sold a retro electric toy still sealed and worth around £60 as its in it original packaging and untouched , I thought it was going to go to a collector but the guy opened it and said it was broken how hell can u get round that as only reason it was worth that as the packaging was sealed, ended up giving him a partial refund of £20 , but what would u of done in that scenario
Approximately what % of sales are then returned, would you say?
Is there a way to refuse sales to users with lower than 95% feedback?
Hi Nick as the buyer said they did not want the item, you can deduct the cost of the postage from the return and charge them a restocking fee too. eBay rep told me this.
Restocking fees are illegal to charge in the UK
Sold some brand new bicycle inner tubes and one got to the customer split and so I sent out a replacement for one of the inner tubes but afterwards I thought the way the inner tube is split looks like a knife was used to remove them from the packaging and cut through the inner tube and it wasn't a manufacturing defect at all. In fact I can't imagine a inner tube split like that not getting noticed at the factory. Customer made the mistake but I pay the price I feel. Now I have to think about packaging knowing that some people won't be careful about unpacking items.
Oh that is frustrating...
I needed a small plastic part for my car. Could only find 10 off from china, waited weeks for them to arrive. Thought it might help others out to sell the rest individually on ebay at very little profit. One buyer waited two days and requested a refund as it had not arrived. I said I would have been happy to have sent a replacement and lost money if it hadnt arrived after a reasonable time, but they didn't bother messaging me. I just chucked the rest in a drawer.
I Sold an item I 'made to order' .. buyer opened a return.. with a 'didn't like it - reason' .. I refused the return and won the case.... the customer decided to leave a negative review, full of untruths.. this was removed from Ebay too... sooo happy with Ebay
Made to order regs are different for distance selling .
You’re allowed to charge a resonable restocking fee and return postage unless it’s faulty. Lots of companies are doing this now. It’s the same of accepting theft is part of running a retail store but all the other customers pay 5 to 10% more as companies budget it into the cost of the products
not allowed to charge restocking fees in the UK
It's annoying, you have the loss of outbound postage plus when you relist you won't get the same price as it originally sold for.
To be fair, if I'd paid £60.00 for that I'd also smell the coffee and send it back for a refund.
LOL
@@Alien8_P1 does smelling coffee actually give you clarity, if so I’m gonna walk around boot sales with a hand full of beans when I’ve made a dodgy purchase
to be fair to the seler its not on him to say maybe i put to much on that item
MAYBE the buyer thiught the seller would panic at thought of a return and just say ok ill give you something off what you paid
basiclly buyer trying his luck backfired
😂😂😂
Buy some holographic anti tamper stickers and stick one over a screw hole next to the serial number Be sure to include that in the photos
That was rather a let down Nick, I'd thought there was actually going to be a scam of some sort!!
I would say it is an "eBay insider" mystery shopper.
Deduct 50% of the refund, when the buyer goes ape, ebay will cover the refund for you. Always works for cases like this. Relist the item at a lower price and hope to make any losses back.
I had one the other month when 30 days after sending they said it was faulty , even though lots of pictures showing it working. They said wanted to send it back. I said no probs if faulty ill refund .3 month's later not returned so as far as im aware they now out of time to return
Yes they are well past their time now - sounds like a classic phishing for a refund
cool story bro
I've got a feeling they tried it out and realised what a weak piece of crap it is. It looks better than it sounds. I paid full price for one of those online and totally regretted it. There is very little bass sound and it's so weak and tinny that I simply gave up on it. I suspect they used it once - were in total shock at how naff it it - and instantly sent it back.
Strange, the buyer should not be refunded the original postage, it can be quite a lot on international shipments.
AFAIK, DSR is UK only not international.
'Free' shipping anyway on this item so a moot point regardless
Buyer always receives refund on shipping with INAD
Well at least they didn’t scam you but good grief / that’s a lame reason. They should have a restock fee for changed mind
Restocking fees are illegal here in the UK
@@jdnetwork-reselling well I see that could be another problem
Free money for the postal companies🎉great maybe the customer was short of money and needed their money back
Switcheroo happens all the time...plus buyer claiming items misisng or parts missing when they've stolen items...once in a while because ebay dont refund us for lost outbound postage cost il purposefully send an empty to a customer and claim back through ebay or parcel company as im sick of being out of pocket for customer returns...happening all too often..and yes its wrong to fight fire with fire however the customer gets a refund from ebay and ebay reimburse me so no loss. Only ebay take the hit as they should for not covering us.
i dont accept returns, its on my listings, if someone changes their mind its up to me if i accept the return or not, if its damaged or not as described then i HAVE to accept the return (which is fine), BUT if they have changed their mind i DONT have to accept the return, that is ebays rule..............
If the product is almost new, why not just use New Other as item condition thus when you relisted even though you have to mention it's a return item, you should sell it in no time.
Surely you only have to refund item cost not the postage
Legally you have to refund both
You said "if it all checks out, I will refund them in full". Are you suggesting that if it does NOT all check out, then you will NOT refund them in full? Because I thought you would have to refund them no matter what, right?
I have seller protection so I can dispute the return and only have to give 50%, it's an odd compromise ebay have come up with to protect sellers from scam returns, but we still lose out
Honestly, the whole process of selling on ebay is infuriating. I made 80k in 3 months and ebay didnt like it, said it raised too many red flags. Shut my account down and can never sell on there again.
😮
was it cause it was a private account? or was it a business one
May I ask what you were selling ?
😬😬😬😬 hate returns... Have a great week Nic. Thanks
Thanks Dave
You always have their name and address. Lots of sites you can drop that info on the dark web just for them to be made fun of. No other nefarious intentions intended. 😮
Reselling too much agro..
Donated for free
Paid £25
Trying to get £35 profit…. Not sure I’d be making a video about that
I would have thought that if the Buyer 'changed their mind' they would be on the hook for all postage costs. I can understand being refunded for postage if item was faulty or not as described but it does not seem fair that you end up paying any postal charges. I have given up buying anything on eBay (international) as the postage is exorbitant.
How...how come you look younger than when I last watched one of these videos? ...
Never sell on eBay simples.
same. scam central
It's earns me a living so I'll stick with it...
@@user-kp4mu4ku2v it’s only a very small minority that send stuff back
Very thorough explanation for processing a return. I take returns and offer free returns. One time in 5 years I had a buyer purchase a NIB Saladmaster item. The buyer requested a return after 30 days because "didn't like." It came back loose in a box and covered in food. I only refunded 50% of the purchase price. The dirty item really mad me mad. They should have purchased a used item for 1/3 of the price if they were uncertain. My New in box item became used, no box. I have never done the half return before and hope to never do it again. I wonder what this story would sound like by the buyer?
We have used the 50% refund on a couple of occasions too. It's shocking what some people see as an acceptable condition for a return.
I sold a genuine leather mens jacket. I photographed it from all angles, including the genuine leather label. Almost 3 months later, they said they'd changed their minds and the reason was they didnt think it was leather and wanted to return it. I got ebay involved and they had to agree with me that the buyer was pulling a fast one, and anyway 3 months was way over the returns time limit.
How strange that you post this today as i get my first big item return from my ebay today.......
The most annoying one i had was a game I sold. It got to 2 hours before the 30 day return and its magically not working. The buyer then took another month for it to be returned they clearly played it, completed it, and then returned it. So, I got it back 2 months later and was fully working.
That is so cheeky !!!!
do you have to make a video everytime you have a return???
@@yoyoyozz632 is he forcing you to watch them?
@Kevin-mf7wb ? Its a genuine question, not trolling
@@yoyoyozz632 Be careful, his cult followers don't like you stating anything negative, even worse questioning moody Andrea!
I think the point the op is making is will having a video opening a returned item be helpful in the case of a dispute. And I don't know. Is such a video even admissable in such a dispute??? Or will eBay just ignore it???
@@Alien8_P1 I’m not a “cult” follower
I hated that, So i use a UV pen with my name and Ebay item number on it. Take a photo with the UV light on it. If they do a switch i can prove to Ebay it was not the item sent.
I sold a humax and they returned it because there neighbours trees were blocking the signal. Like really? Is that my problem?
@@leetaylor4435 satellite signal?
I just fixed one of those today and put online. Last time I sold one £100 now the recordable HDR is only worth £40.
consumer law says have to give a full refund even if buyer changes his'her mind. but only for standard outbound shipping fee. so if the buyer paid extra for say next day special delivery you only refund std shipping cost. BUT I think i'm right ebay only allows you to refund in full. if you refund less than full i'm thinking you don;t get selling fees back. i'm ok though as I don't offer next day delivery etc. that looks like a good boom box. Dab+ so probably not too old.
Why do you loose outwards postage? They asked for it and you sent it and they changed their minds so not your fault.
A buyer doesn’t reimburse the original postage costs to the seller, so he’s lost the cost of the original postage.
@pauline-glitterbugcrafts I wondered that myself but then thought maybe it was free postage so you'd refund in full and you'd be out of pocket postage wise?
@allysonpatchett19 that makes more sense, otherwise it would be very unfair if someone just changed their minds at no fault of the seller.
@@pauline-glitterbugcrafts The Distance Selling Regulations now called the Consumer Contracts Regulations states that sellers must reimburse all costs to a buyer upon return, including the original shipping, even if it were listed separately to "free" (which isn't really free, its just a fancy way to say 'postage included'). Unfortunately its one of the downsides of online selling, if a buyer returns it because they change their minds, the seller loses the original postage they paid. The only exception is if the item has been damaged or overly handled i.e. shoes come back worn and muddied, the seller can then deduct for damages - although they are still in a poor position because they have a used item they now need to sell on. 😢
That said I prefer this to the dishonest buyers who claim not as described so they can get free shipping both ways!😡
