  • Kev and Peta arrive at Rookesbury Caravan and Motorhome Club site and chat about the cost of living crisis. Will we be able to carry on caravanning? If so, what changes will we be making so that it remains an affordable pastime in the teeth of inflation and rising energy costs?
We're also asking for recommendations for non-club sites in the New Forest. Comment below!

It opened last week, Eric. We're going to be there in a few days. Can't wait! Kev

Hi Kev & Peta (if that's how you spell it!) we've been caravanning for only 2 years and having travelled the country in the caravan, we've realised that we've never used any of the sites' facilities, not even the dog walks as he always comes out with us to explore during the day so have realised certified sites are the way to go for us and, as you say, with fuel, we'll stick to local ones which there are plenty of. Also means we can reduce our home fuel bills as the house will be empty and caravan gas & solar is a lot cheaper than at home.
Interesting seeing what your other viewers' views are.

You make a good point! While you're using solar in a field you're saving at home too! Love it - and yes, you have spelled my name right :)

Been away twice with our van for a three night stay in the old station at masham in Yorkshire and two night stay in west gate caravan park Teesdale with both being less than a hour and 15 minutes from home based in County Durham.
Both sites are about 22 -25 pounds so doesn’t brake the bank but the pubs do !!! 😁

Peta Kev. We have had to cancel all our caravan breaks for the rest of the year. As you say with the cost of living as it is we feel caravanning is a luxury we cannot afford at the moment. Financially for us, things will improve next year when we finally get our state pensions and have a lot more disposable income so will start up again. Thanks for the shout out but I think you may of confused me with someone else as I have never been to Foxhill Farm. However, I can highly recommend two fantastic CL sites in the forest which we visit regularly, "Homefield" and "Eden Gate", both are circa £25 a night but have full facilities, showers, toilets, DOG WALKS, beautifully maintained and all year round sites as well. "Nick from Gosport".

Sorry to hear that, Nick. And for the confusion :-) Maybe it was another Nick who told us! Take care and see you around next year :-)
PS - surely you're too young for a state pension! Kev

Is it worth twice the money for loos and showers?
    God, Yes!
We're still managing to get out regularly, but the bank account is feeling the strain.

Honestly Steve, we ummed and ahhed for ages about using the onboard loo but I genuinely don't mind the shenanigans associated with that now. Except on the one occasion at Rookesbury, when it was super hot, and I forgot to put the necessary green stuff in the loo. Crikey - that got whiffy fast!

Hi Try using the rallies with the clubs. Around £10 per night.

We are new to caravanning and the costs are getting a bit crazy at the moment. It does make us second guess longer trips due to fuel costs.

I think a lot of us are thinking again about whether we need to travel far. As we found in the New Forest, there are often gems on our doorstep. Kev

@@CluelessinaCaravan then again, if I recall, you famously went caravanning in the field next to your caravan storage yard 😀 I get what you mean though, luckily we live in Yorkshire so plenty of lovely countryside to explore on our doorstep

@@heyholetstow We regularly have a quickie at the CL site next to our storage yard :) we go out after dinner on Friday night and come home on Sunday afternoon. It makes it easier to get away on a Friday after work!

@@PetaPartner sounds a good plan. Our first ever mini-trip away was only 10 minutes from our storage yard.
