At last! Someone who finally gets to the point re having full control over the excellent camera with the simplicity of using a phone and not having to get a controller out. I don't need 100m. WiFi and 50m for getting quick, high quality images is what I want.
The Flip is a innovative awesome drone. I sold my Neo and bought the Flip next to the Mini 4 Pro and Air 3. Compared to the Neo: 1. Better battery life, 2. More quiet, 3. Also good prop protection and bigger props, more powerfull, 4 Better camera, 5. Awesome automatic on/off system, DJI should do this for all new drones, 6. If birds attack the drone less chance of crash because of the closed prop design. Etc so simply awesome in my personal opinion. The future of drone design? Greetings from 🇳🇱
Another reviewer said the gimbal is incredibly fragile. It's probably not good to test it hitting anything head-on! Of course, battery life will be better than the Neo, the Flip battery capacity is more than 2x the capacity of the Neo and 20% more than the standard Mini 3/4 pro battery. Yet the m3p still lasts longer. The Flip currently can not track objects. Only people. Everyone had the hype that the Flip was going to get lidar and perform as good as the Air3s. Sadly, it's got a barely working infared sensor that sometimes works and only in certain modes. Poor wind resistance compared to the mini series. As a beginner drone not a great choice compared to the Neo as you can crash the Neo all day and never risk breaking anything, the Flip may cause frustration should you break that camera gimbal as mentioned by another reviewer. I can see why the Flip does not support FPV as DJI obviously knows it's not as robust as the Neo.
I own a DJI Mavic Mini Fly More Drone Combo since 2019. Yes I can’t film 4K and obstacle avoidance is not as great at later generations but that light weight remote control, being able to just plug my phone and launch… I still haven’t need to upgrade. I started with a dji ryze tello and the change of experience I had when I got my mavic mini was incredible.
It’s so funny. The first minutes when you talk about it, it’s exactly - and I mean 1:1 - what I thought about it myself 😅 I did the product shoot of the Flip for DJI and had the chance to test it for 3 months. At first I was skeptical, but I warmed up to it pretty fast. I’m in the game 8 years myself so I’m used to other, bigger birds. But well, as you say: it’s not really made for us. It’s for beginners, vloggers and travelers. And those ppl get a great product with very nice camera for a budget 😎👌 Ps: for everyone wondering: it’s louder than the mini4 pro but Avata1 and Neo are louder than the flip
I felt your pain when you described the Flip taking off sideways from your hand. I had a lanyard that would unclip itself from the RC2 controller, and one fine day, it did so, sending an Air 3 hauling across a park, directly at a group of unsuspecting, innocent bystanders, sending THEM in every direction. Fortunately, everyone found their good humor. No lawsuits were initiated. I don't know what to make of the flip. It's on its way to me, but I'm not sure how we will get along. I'll stay open minded!
You’ve got the right perspective here, especially your comments on the drone community and the almost toxic immediate backlash this has garnered, not unlike what happened with the Neo.
Best review so far. Straight to the point and to the important info's. My first drone was the Neo and now I have the Mini 4 Pro as well. This could replace my Neo if I'm able to buy just the Flip without the controller because I already have the RC2 from the Mini 4 Pro.
I like it been playing with it for 2 days now. I agree its not really a 'drone' more a flying action cam for photo's and some video. I do wonder if DJI should not make a new controller (hear me out heh). The issue with the phone is the range and no return to home etc etc. What they should do is make a magsafe 'block' the size of iphones/android that you can clip on the back (say 15mm think max) that has 2 antennas flipping out. Small cable to attach to phone usb-c. Inside the O4 chipset and maybe some battery bank to change/keep phone/O4 chip going. This would be way smaller and enough for many things and resolve some of the issues. Fold antennas in and put it back (with the phone) in your pocket. It could also have a beacon inside (once thats one) so even in your pocket it could track you.
Love the sound of that! I always enjoyed the Mavic 2 Pro controller and the original Mavic Air controller. Given that you have your phone with you anyway, they were small and easy to carry. For me, portability is important so even hooking the new controllers up to a bike for example is a pain in the backside because they are so big and heavy. But the O4 transmission, battery life, screen quality etc is very good so it's a tradeoff. Like your idea though!
Thanks so much! I do not own a drone. I was tempted to buy the mini3 a few years ago but bought another Fuji instead. We will be walking the Herriot Way in Yorkshire this coming September. At first I thought the Flip would be a great companion, especially since we will be packing light for our walks. I was drawn to the idea of flying it with either no controller or using the iPhone to control it. However, the more I learned, the more I'm concerned I'll not be able to get the kind of shots I want to take. Add to that the 30fps limitation since I use 24fps timeline for my videos I edit in DaVinci Resolve. The camera control limitation also concerns me because I like to film with ND filters to allow me to get at least close to a 180 degree shutter for my footage. Now I'm torn. I want the features of the mini4, but I don't want the bulk of the controller when walking. I'd rather get in at a lower price point as well. Finally, I saw you using the Flip like a Pocket. How did that work for you?
I feel like this is a deadend product line like the NEO. It really doesn't have anywhere to go from here. I believe a Mini 5 Pro has a future with some exciting possibilities. Also, the Flop should have fit into CAT 1 designation. Keeping my money for now.
The problem is you cant compare the price against the RRP of those other drones. At this point the Mini 4 Pro and other alternatives are readily & regularly available at a discount, refurb, used etc. It makes the Flip feel like a product without a place.
its a unique product.. much larger than I thought it would be .. I have a mini pro 3 for my business and a neo for fun, which it really is because of the fact you can take off and land easily from your hand so fast startup for fun around the family.. and the fon as a controller works for me with neo since if I need more out of a drone I just use the mp3.. good to see the conversation 😂 instead of a "review"
I'm sure there's a market for it (somewhere) Seems like DJI have created a drone that didn't really need creating, for a gap in the market that wasnt actually there? I held off with the Mini 4, the Neo and now this.
Anyone considering the Flip, wait until Best Buy or US based suppliers get stock. FYI Amazon does not yet have US stock so don't buy there yet either. I ordered one and it is now stuck in a warehouse awaiting customs clearance. According to the information sent to me by UPS it is due to missing information on the customs forms. Either way, unless you like gambling with the possibility of waiting weeks to get your drone, just don't buy it yet. I ordered the Flip because DJI claimed they fixed the issues with customs, but didn't see the reviewer that made a video saying they missed making their launch review because of a customs issue. If my drone hasn't left that warehouse in the next 48 hours I am getting initiating a refund. One thing to note, the shipper may reach out for your SSN in the process.
At first I was not impressed at all. I felt that, since I cannot buy a Flip without controller ( I already have one), it was a bit of a waste. BUT...as you say Stewart...it is not aimed at those of us who have been flying for years and have a collection of DJI drones. First or starter drone which will encourage new people into the hobby and who will then go on to buy more advanced models. Thanks!
I have a question for you or maybe it could be an idea for a future video content... do you have any tips on how to capture quick videos of landmarks/landscapes? I'm going on a trip soon but we're going from one city to another with limited time. Also I don't want my wife to be bored while I try to get that perfect shot 😂.
Great content and video. Us consumers are weird...we kinda loved the Neo but whined about picture quality, speed and size/wind resistant... ...so we get awesome picture quality, improved resistance and more speed... ...and we whine about the design. 😂
Excellent revie..... eh... wisdom there :) Thanks Stewart. Think I'm going to sell my Neo, ignore the Flip, and wait for the Mini 5 to come out. Still rocking my Air 2 :) I'm not a Tik Toker... just wanting to capture my biking travels.
I wonder if the speed is limited (28-29kph) through firmware due to autonomous tracking capabilities and maybe they can increase the speed as the tracking algorithms upgrade through firmware. Currently that 28kph speed is too slow for me if I were to use it autonomously. Although I’ve had DJI Minis over the years I rarely use them anymore since the Hover X1 and now the Hover X1 Pro which I got last year. With the continued firmware improvements coming out regularly on that the autonomous modes are getting varied and really good and tracking you at 43kph is useful to my on my gravel cycling adventures. It’s so good not to need a controller (although I agot the controller sticks too but rarely use them) and slip it into the jersey pocket to take on a ride and use all the autonomous modes to capture your adventure from different angles, no remote, it’s great. It’s 120fps slow-motion is only 1080P but you can shoot 4K 60fps and that gives some room to slow in post. If the DJI flip was faster and with a bunch of extra modes it could be good too
Another reviewer said the gimbal is incredibly fragile. It's probably not good to test it hitting anything head-on! I can see why the Flip does not support FPV as DJI obviously knows it's not as robust as the Neo. As you say the Flip is still a noisy drone compared to the mini series, sadly I was hoping for the most quiet drone thanks to its enclosed larger props unfortunately they did not help much! The Neo already has aftermarket props that can significantly reduce the high pitch noise.
It seems like an odd release so close to the Neo. I do like the folding mechanism, the Mini3/4 system always seems a bit fiddly. but it is an UGLY drone :)
It's all a flop since Air2s if you ask me but people keep buying these minor updates/downgrades of a drones. One gotta skip at least two generations for a real world improvement. Speaking from the point of poor consumer of course 😅
My old phantom 4 pro v2 still does the job for me and cheap! Pick them up 2nd hand cheap these days. Just don't think you will be too stealth with it and going o/s well yeh air2s
It's ugly. It's loud. It's too big for what it offers. Let's call it what it is. A horrible answer to the Max Pro that came out a few months ago that does all of the moves and follow far better. To call this anything but a money grab is not accurate.
Fantastic fully comprehensive review Stewart! You’ve got some amazing shots in there too!
Brother, no other drone channel even comes close to yours. Thanks for all you do. 🇨🇦

Not a traditional drone by design, but one that will appeal to a new market, maybe.

Does it have master shots, this is very helpful for beginners or infrequent users
