It’s a situation journalists from black-owned media outlets often discuss behind closed doors - being relegated to the Siberia of red carpets and ignored by stars. Now there’s video.
    Ad by Valueimpression
Jamaal Finkley, founder of online entertainment outlet BlackTree TV, posted a video on UA-cam of his experience last weekend on the Grammy Awards red carpet. Finkley captioned the nearly six-minute video “Black Media at the Grammys, The Struggle Is Real.”
The footage shows journalists of color from smaller, independent media outlets pleading for interviews as artists including H.E.R., Gucci Mane, and Quavo breeze past them.

At one point, a Spanish-speaking reporter repeatedly asks Rosalía for an interview. A rep insists the Spanish singer-songwriter doesn’t have time. Although she does stop in front of the cameras as her team styles her hair and puts finishing touches on her makeup.
Seconds later, Finkley asks Questlove for an interview. The Roots frontman walks up and shakes his hand, but says: “I have to run.”
Finkley told Urban Hollywood 411 he made the video to show the challenges journalists of color, particularly members of the black press, face on red carpet arrivals lines.
“Over the past few years, the pendulum has changed a bit,” he said. “The challenges that all media face in getting major talent is still there, but the connection between black talent and black media has eroded. Instead of the ones that would often give us a shot because we were one of the few, now they seem to intentionally avoid us.”
    Ad by Valueimpression
Finkley has been covering red carpets for over two decades, and was credentialed this month for all the big Hollywood events.
“I’m just wrapping up a January that had the Golden Globes, Critics Choice, Oscar nominations, SAG Awards, AAFCA Awards, DGA and GRAMMYs,” he explained. “I’ve had to spend money each time on cameramen, tuxedos, equipment, all for the opportunity to interview these nominees or presenters in hopes that I can monetize that interview through streaming and or licensing, and I’ve watched multiple stars act like we didn’t exist.”
Related Story: Red Carpet Outrage: Black Media Denounce ‘Back of the Bus’ Treatment
Finkley did get interviews at the Grammys with Kirk Franklin, Sheila E., ballet dancer Misty Copeland, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, and others. But many of the African American performers he hoped to speak with refused to stop.
He said it’s happened throughout awards season.
“Jamie Foxx kept his back to us at the SAG Awards while we yelled out to him, J.Lo never stopped, Sterling K. Brown, the list goes on,” he explained. “But Nicole Kidman almost always stopped for a second. Laura Dern stopped a few times. Charlize Theron stopped twice, so it just makes me wonder why our own stars are so comfortable skipping us.”
Finkley said he decided to speak out because he’s fed up.
“How does black media survive when black talent disrespects our presence? By the time I was on this carpet watching Rick Ross purposely skip Ebony, AllHipHop and BlackTree, but stop at People and Vulture, I was done with it,” he said. “I just told the cameraman to keep the camera rolling. If I can’t talk to them about financial empowerment and the state of the culture, then the story would be their disrespect of the media that built them up.”

Basically. Thanks for sharing. I’ve been dealing with this for a few years on every major red carpet. That’s me in the silver waving & yelling trying to get folks attention lol - there were many who stopped for me, greatly appreciated - but many who didn’t, despite our collective attempts from the sidelines to call everyone’s name, even lil nas x. Sucks because we go out and support every endeavor, buy the music, watch the movies, show up and get dressed for these events just to get dissed.

Lil Nas X attended BET Awards. An award show dedicated to black entertainment. Unlike the Grammys which only credentialed 5 or so black media outlets, the BET Awards credentials dozens of black outlets. Lil Nas X hits the BET Awards carpet does an interview with entertainment tonight and walked in. You can google it. Search it. This was the first of 5 music awards shows featuring Lil Nas X. The Grammys being the 5th. He did the same thing every time. So please miss me with your we discriminated on Lil Nas X tantrum. It’s fake rage and your just distracting from the issue that was clearly stated for you in the video. This video is not about sexuality, you’re trying to make it about it.

This was an excellent video. Why? I guess you are finally exposing these people for what they really are. You have these so-called Black actors, leaders and Hollywood wannabes who act so high-and-mighty that they can't even talk to the foundational people? This goes back to when I talked about money is not allocated by our own people for our own people? Yet and still there are those who might criticize the fact that you expose them for who they really are? You are one of the best in this game. You've always been very professional and polish and put together. My hope and pray for you is that you just let it go and expose the truth for what it is. There are black people in Hollywood that are assholes show them so that we cannot support them and let them feel the sting.

Guess Who so now we’re assuming. I dont buy it. It was QUIET...Not a peep...not a “hey”...NOTHING. You cannot contradict your point because it then becomes invalid. And that’s what this video shows. Because on one hand he says the black artists didn’t stop for black media...But then at the end of the video he quickly mentions there WERE black artists that stopped and interviewed for black media. He didn’t even actually show the interviews but instead flashes clips. Lil Nas X walks by and you could hear a pin drop... Yet the Latina artist, Rosalia, had a WHOLE ENTIRE team around her but he joined in trying to get her attention. “Black media loves her too”...Wasn’t it CLEAR she was busy getting pampered and wasn’t going to stop??...🤔😒

Guess Who This comment is ALL wrong. YOU are assuming that the reporter “hates gay people”. I never stated, nor did I insinuate that he didn’t call out to Lil Nas X because he “hates gay people”. YOU have said that, one. Some people need to stay off the net because their points aren’t supported at all and they be just saying “stuff”. Two, “my narrative” is simply what it is, and that is that EVERY OTHER BLACK ARTIST was called out to, and LNX was not. There’s no assumption there, it’s JUST FACTS. So where are YOU coming from again?? I did not ASSUME why the reporter didn’t call out to him. I didn’t say it was FOR ANY particular reason. But THE FACT IS, he didn’t. I’m sorry I just don’t like when people choose to comment under my comment and don’t make sense.

Many of you don't understand the scheduling and planning it takes to navigate these types of events as a celebrity. When I was in graduate school, I advised a programming board and we brought in Spike Lee for a lecture. We had to create an extensive agenda and itinerary from the time he landed though departure. Picking him up from the airport. Providing food. Ensuring that he arrives on time where he needs to be. It's alot. IT WAS COMPLETE MAYHEM. PEOPLE WENT CRAZY! There were soooo many people clamoring for him after the lecture. While walking him to the car, People started running at us like wild boar. We were literally cornered and trapped. He was so gracious and attempted to sign everyone's memorabilia but there just wasn't enough time. He barely made his flight. BARELY. I vowed then that I never wanted to be a celebrity. I'm saying all this so you have context to why they seem rushed. They aren't trying to ignore you. There is just ALOT coming at them and many of us don't realize that. We are just concerned about OUR autograph or exclusive interview.

  • @vlogofdreamstv

I am so glad that you did this video. We as black people claim "black support", but we don't support eachother often times. A lot of times we dog eachother out. There are historical reasons and habits for doing so. We are the ones who buy the entertainment most and who set the standards for what is "hot" most. But some entertainers are just arrogant. They speak one thing but do another. And some just don't care about black people until it is popular. It's sad. Some just are about the money and it is not personal. Whatever their reasons, it's not right to disregard black media. And what are they in such a rush for? To go sit and watch other people perform. I've been in the audience, a lot of it is boring anyways. Rushing for what? Black media supports their work and take the time to share their progress, how do they not have time for them? Some of the people that don't talk to black media I don't even know. They should be happy someone wants to interview them. On the other hand there are a lot of black people that support eachother and do interviews. But I am glad you showed this because I will not support those who don't support others. This video really got me going. LOL.

And what if all these artists were philanthropists aimed towards the black community? I just need a lot more than a video of them passing by black media on a red carpet with lacking information to justify any kind of opinion.
