- I did leave Japan once - to travel for 9 months around the world in 2003 and spent a month back in the USA - but I returned and this is what I missed. ✔︎ Vending Machines ✔︎ Konbini (Convenience Stores) ✔︎ The Food ✔︎ No Tipping ✔︎ Baths ✔︎ Washlet Toilets ✔︎ Cleanliness (Shoes Off Inside) ✔︎ Safety ✔︎ Japanese Seasonal Changes ✔︎ Predictability ✔︎ Japanese Television ✔︎ City Living ✔︎ Close to the Sea and Mountains, Cities and Nature - there is a lot that I didn’t miss as well, of course, and many things I miss from the USA. (That means I may love living in Guam or Hawaii!) this episode is filmed during an afternoon walk around Tokyo. What’s YOUR LIST? Leave a comment below.

Interesting to look at the city and hear the commentary, more like this please. In the Midwest USA they still get you when you walk in
I miss the smells walking through festivals and areas dense with restaurants. I miss the traditions and pride in ones heritage. I miss the cemeteries and the respect thats given at them l. I miss the smells at shrines.
Hoss the incense at shrines and temples is so peaceful. Sometimes in cities you can walk off a noisy street and find solitude. It’s amazing. All senses can find a reason to love Japan.
Thanks for these videos. I watch them on my way to work in the morning and it's very nostalgic

John ... thank you so much for your live streams .. I really enjoy it and it makes me feel that I came back to Japan again ... wish to meet you when I visit Japan again .. please keep this nice effort and these amazing live streams :-)
I truly Love your mid night run. So interesting as I’m trying to learn about Japan. I had never been there.
I was there with my girlfriend back in March 2019, the convenience stores were just amazing. What blew me away was the massive variety of flan. I ate as much flan in Japan as I normally do when I go to Spain. And there was a large variety of flan. They gotta get into making the best and richest flan, the 'Tocino del Cielo" (Heaven's Bacon)
1. Good quality oishi food
2. Efficient transport system
3. Courteous japanese people
4. Clean public toilet/restroom
Plus a lot more...
Everything that John said is what makes me miss Japan. From the beautiful neon lights, the amazingly nice people, the trains and how they would announce the station names, the food and how you can never go hungry, the beautiful country side. Basically everything about Japan.
Missing the food and the ppl. Had so many amazing ppl helping me for nothing. Like if I was lost and asked someone for directions they would take me to the exact place or make sure I was on the right path even if it made them get out of their way. It was mind blowing. I even started to be afraid of asking ppl for help couse didn't want to make them feel like they had to take me there. And the ricee, Ohhh my god rice there is soooo well done so good. I was adicted to rice cakes it was my breakfast for 15 days :) would try to live there easy easy. If language wasn't such a big barrier, would try to find job. :)
*Oh, Dekavita!!! That's what I miss from japan.*
I've lived in Japan for less than a year, many years ago. Since then, I tried to go back to live and work. But it' s hard to get a job from outside Japan. Right now, I finally accepted that Japan may not be for me. But, I still want to visit Japan once in a while. This year I'll be touring Japan, so excited.
I miss how store staff use both hands to hand you something. They are presenting things to you, instead of handing them to you. It is so special and charming.
Your timing was great. Arigato. I’ve wondered why I’ve been missing Japan so much! (I go twice a year). In general it’s all that you said about the tons of conveniences, of course FOOD, and the superb hospitality ❤️ overall, it’s the details that hv been thought through and common sense approach to issues and problems...with touches of beauty in all things ❤️I love Nihon!
We have been to different parts of Japan once per year since 2017. Visited Hokkaido just recently in May. I already miss it.
1)Safety
2)Considerate, genuine and friendly people
3)Clean and efficient transportation
4) Food
5)Convenience
6)Culture
7)Air quality and clean environment
8)Excellent service
IF I were to live in Japan and leave there after 5 years, it would be:
1) trains
2) vending machines
3) Hotsprings
4) Conbini’s
5) Old Inn’s
6) Jingles
7) Best services
8) no tippings
9) and everything else
Which would be the top list for me.
Conbinis
I have never had the privilege of visiting the land of Nippon. I do have the great joy of experiencing it vicariously through your eyes. For that treat I am truly grateful you are willing to share your journey with us. Thank you, Sir.
Hello John, we would miss your videos ,if you leave Japan! But that is not going to happen :-) Wishing you many more happy years of life in Japan!
I like how you explain everything👍✌️😄
I thoroughly enjoyed this video.
I miss the delicious food, the shopping, Lawsons, Family Mart, the onsens, Daisoo, Don Quixote, the service, the multitude and variety of shops, the breads, the cakes, gachapons, the sushi...you name it...I cannot wait to return again...soon I hope!
My 17-year-old son and I miss the McDonalds. My son will be living in Japan when he is 20.

The efficient rail system, the sake...the toilets!!! The cleanliness, the safety...
Hi, John! I watch all your video, thank you.
D) all of the above.
Was only there two weeks, and already want to go back! I was amazed how easy it was to travel in the mountains and countryside via trains and buses!
One thing I miss about Japan after a visit are the handy shelf-like areas by the sinks and toilets in all public restrooms. So useful when carrying items and need a clean place to set them down to do your business!
Its really interesting im been visiting japan once a year in different seasons visiting again this year in november i always miss everything about culture from foods to public transportation 👍
I miss everything about Japan! It's as if you're in another world whenever you're in Japan. Will be going back this November!
I visited Japan for 40 years with my business. Retired 7 years ago and immediately moved here. Love it !
never visited any country yet but remembered the things u said u would miss from previous episodes of both the channels
liked the video.
First time to visit a month ago, and i missed it already. Yes, the people, cleanliness, on time train system, food, the beers and of course my favorite the vending machines(it feels like I have to try all the drinks being offered). Will definitely be back to Japan.
I had been to Roppongi once. I used to stay at the New Sanno Hotel one station away for a night while my dad was in the US Navy. A hotel for service members.
John, I just got back from Japan after staying 3 weeks. I miss all those things! Especially the affordable public bathhouses (there’s one in Northern Virginia about an hour away where I live but it’s not as pretty and $45 for a day pass) and onsen! Japanese trees are also so pretty
There were a number of things I missed when I moved back to the United States after living in Japan. One of the things I learned that I missed which surprised me were, as I believe you mention, the jingles. The sounds of the stations, cross walks, things like that. I didn't realize I missed them until the first time I watched something filmed in Japan after I returned to the US. When I heard those sounds, it was kind of like "Wow, I didn't think I would miss something like that." haha. Some things that you mention which did not miss were washlet toilets because I never experienced one while I was living there, and public bathing. Even though I enjoyed soaking in a nice hot bath, I never really fully adjusted to the idea of doing so around others. It would be too much to really list all the things I did and did not miss though since Japan had become like a second home to me.
😊 yeah vending machines, the transportation compared to where I am from and the quiet calm aura especially when you're away from the busy areas.
What a great livestream! I wish we had the safety and peace of mind here in the US like you do in Japan. You tend to miss out in a lot bc it’s just not safe
You were definitely near Roponggi when you saw that sultry thing on the truck : )
I miss the general polite mindfulness, but then I miss everything especially the quality and price of food in Japan.
I’d miss walking along a street be it a busy one in Tokyo or Osaka or deserted back street in Kamakura or Onomichi feeling completely at peace with myself. Will be back in January 2020. Love your videos.
I have been to Japan 3 times since November 2017. 4th trip this coming December and 5th will be Spring 2020. I always come back to Japan because I miss the vending machines, konbinis, efficient and punctual train system, cleanliness, safety, disciplined people, the Autumn and Winter season (I live in a tropical country), historical sites, old culture, food, no tipping, side streets, the cute stuffs, anime and video game culture, toys/action figures, and many more! :)
I miss Japan a lot. The vending machines for sure. I use to get California rolls at a stand outside of where I worked for $1 US. It was an amazing place to live for a year..& all of what you said in your video!
I identify with your love and enthusiasm for Japan after visiting for the first time late 2018. I am on a mission to get back asap. You however, have lived there for many years so that tells me my obsession is real. I missed the toilets above everything else! Respect and order next.
not just only the vending machine. The public transportation (JR, Metro), the automatic toilet systems, the kitchen, the door lock but basically all the technology and the list can go on and on and on which made Japan is unique than any other modern countries in the world. I miss Japan already.. :(
You are so lucky! I wish I could visit Japan in this lifetime but I don't see that happening. I love their culture and food and deserts. Sweets, so many things there that I wish I could see in person.
great content!
The takyubin service is amazing! When we travel to Japan and if we don't want to hassle with it luggage from one destination to the next we send it to the next hotel by takyubin. Once we sent our luggage from Nagoya to Narita and when we got to the airport it was sitting in the departure area untouched! Amazing!
The people, food, the abundance of things to do in a small area. I miss the safety feeling I get when I go. It's time for another trip. The vending machines is my favorite part of the country.
In Czech republic we take the shoes off too ;-)
I miss the braille everywhere, the vending machine, the politeness of people, the washlets, the quality of food. The 5pm chime, and no tipping :) Shimbashi that where we stayed 3 months ago.
What I miss about Japan are the following:
1. Seasonal activities with friends (e.g. hanami, yozakura, kouyou, summer fireworks, snowboarding, etc)
2. Traveling within Japan
3. Amusement parks
4. Karaoke and nomikai with friends after work
5. Coco Ichiban
6. Late night bike trips with my friends
I've been to Japan 2 times now and I will go back it was a very fun trip both times I was there ! First time was for son's wedding and 2nd time was for hubby and my 50 anniversary! I send everything through the post office!
Weird thing I experienced when I went to Hiroshima (1986 lol) was all the mod rockers gathered outside the Peace Museum
I will miss...
Japanese people Hospitality.
Japanese culture.
And the list is endless about Japan's Good things .One of my loving Country .John you r great in making Japan closer to our 💕 Heart.
Japan has nailed convenience in so many ways, not only that it is safe, clean and there is the respect upheld by everyone towards others, such as not talking on the underground trains, not smoking whilst walking down the street to name a few examples. It is all these small details combined which made my first visit to Japan so eye opening on how society can function seamlessly, it puts a lot of other countries to shame for their standards.
Yakusoba I love it :))
America NEEDS those damn plastics package handles. I have cussed so many times because having one at that particular moment would have been the cat's meow!! 😕. Thank you!
When we left Japan, the one thing I do miss are the "all good kids has to go home" 4.30pm tunes. In fact, I miss it so much, so the one we had in Hikawadai, I found a recording of and now use it as my ringtone.
I remember Johnny Rockets at that location from the early 90's. Thanks
I went to japan twice, and I think I got pretty good idea what I missed from japan:
1. Convenience store, man, I am not mad for eating convenience store, they are very good
2. Arcade place / game corner, I always love ufo machine type of game, got many good stuffs in my last 2 visits
3. Gundam base tokyo, mecca for all gundam kit lover, 1:1 gundam too
4. Model kit / anime figure stores (akihabara, den den town, nakano broadway, etc) those places selling discounted gundam kits and figurines.. I bought 10+ kits during my last visit
5. Disney sea / universal studio, very clean, very polite staffs, very organized, loved every moment there
6. Food, kobe beef steak, sushi, ramen, takoyaki, okonomiyaki, dayum
7. Snack, kit kat and pocky with so many amazing flavours
8. Super high tech toilet, I always use that flushing sound (and yeah, I don't mind using any random toilet in Japan, they are super clean)
9. etc
Informative
Thanks for sharing, we were raised to take of shoes in our house and others I from s cal , Az , ak And keep your feet of furniture I know a lot of people that do the same. Have a great day ☮️❤️🍀🤘😜🦋
Your love of Japan is evident. :) I've been there last Spring and haven't stopped missing it since. I often admired the convenience and simplicity of many things, wondering why this can't be the norm in other places as well. I've never felt so good just randomly walking on the street in other countries, for me Tokyo was inexplicably relaxing, considering it is such a big metropolis. Thanks for the video, it feels like exploring the city with a friend who shares the same nerdy passion as I do. Cheers and enjoy this beautiful country! P.S. I believe 'socata' is elderflower juice. That's what we call it in Romania and we used to have this Fanta flavor as well, many years ago. :D
EVERYTHING.
Konbini, restaurants, toilets, cleanliness, public transportation, stationary stores, onsen, sento, scenery, no tipping, customer service, and so much more. Incredible country and people.
We live in Japan vicariously through you John
I didn't read all the comments but I hope there was a call out to our elder population in Japan for there dedication and tenacious attitude towards staying independent. It is amazing to see some people so bent over they cannot even see, easily, ahead of them but damn... they are out doing their thing. Much respect!!
BTW... I will be downtown tomorrow. If we walk by Peace Park I'll keep an eye out to say hello.
This is like a checklist for improving the infrastructure in developing countries.
Am going Japan for the 4th time within 6 yrs! For me I just love the trains. JR, local line or Shinkansen 🚅 you just can’t have the same feeling anywhere else in the world. HK MTR or SG MRT... it just feels so fantastic taking trains in Japan! Bento in Shinkansen is the most wonderful way to take a Long train trip, ever! Even at rush hours, everyone is so organised. The stations, geez they’re like mega exploration maze with so many things to discover!
Everything. I could never leave here. Lifer!
