Winter poisoning is the “easiest” as the animals are seeking water. I learned of this horrid practice when I worked in a disaster area in Louisiana.
Put up a sign in Bulgarian & Russian stating there are security cameras ! Make sure townspeople know your cats were poisoned. That they weren’t Strays, but valued & it’s upsetting to know someone came to your property to kill your animals. Rural gossip will work from there!
There are just 10 residents in the village and all of them now know that the cats were our pets.
We hope that nothing like this will happen in the future
Some grandma or grandpa from the area is poisoning them. Most of the old people in bulgarian villages don't really care about dogs and cats. Trust me, I know. :) I am from here. Small minded people or just crazy.

I watch little bulgarian adventure, they lost cats as well as another family they sre friendlybwith have lost cats. I think they all live in the same are. Perhaps something going round.

Having been pulled over by traffic police is normal. It is not because you are '' bearded and tattoed brit'' as some of the reviews said. The only reason they pulled you over was for money. It is sad, but traffic police is very corrupt and they expected you to tip them. I have done this a couple of times myself, But I don't do this anymore. It is up to you. You either accept the ticket and pay the charge ( depending on what you have done wrong you might lose points too), or you pay them 10 or 20 lv and get away with it. It is easier, it is quicker and Will save you the hassel, But it is not right. So if that happens again don't be suprised, it is your decision how you Will sort it out.
That's interesting thank you..though we've seen vehicles clearly illegal not got stopped, and we always get stopped having done nothing wrong. They were clearly trying to find a reason to fine...if they're expecting a tip they'll never get it from us! It is sad and frustrating and easy to feel like we're targeted but I hope you're right 😊👍
Sadly its common place, locals will place poison on food in their barns/sheds to kill rodents and strays. Cats will wander so its more likely a neighbour had placed bait on their property, had it happen to a couple of our cats but never our dogs. Now remaining cats are indoors, really sorry to hear it happened to you.
Yes we've learnt that too, although vet confirmed it was anti-freeze 🙄
So sorry about the cats, quite sickening. Do you think it would have made any difference if they had been wearing collars and a tag? That way people can see they have an owner and are not strays and may be less inclined to do such an awful thing, just a thought.
You might be right there 👍 in rural villages you don't see any animals have collars but we'll definitely try that for future x
I know its an expense but you can set up battery operated cameras and these days not that expensive. I would be going out of my mind wondering who would do such a thing.

Hey guys, sorry about the cats but unforunately these things are quite common in rural bulgarian regions.. I personally have lost a couple of dogs even though my house is surrounded by cousins and such.. so there is always this one guy say 50+ years old that is a hunter or something and is shovinist as f*k that does such idiotic crap, so definitely done by someone in the near houses that sees the cats as pests that come into his house. As for the police.. they can fine you even if one of the two light on tha back number has burned out.. they can be really annoying idiots and sometimes they are really nice guys depends on the person unfortunately. That is pretty F upd Mate, am so sorry to hear that some nasty low life scumbag came to your property and bloody poisoned your moggies . Is it possible that they probably wandered to some of the neighbours place. cats are known to wander especially in mating season. I grew up on a farm in Jamaica and some of ours would go missing for weeks during mating and the harvesting of avocado seasons . Anyway, chin up Mate and get some cameras up when you can.

Sorry to hear about the cats, but they're often seen as predatory pests in country areas.
Is it possible that they've been exploring and drunk some antifreeze from an open container, or even licked drips from a leaking car radiator?

Unfortunately they only stayed within our borders. The closest neighbours house is 200 metres away, and closest car even further. Others in the area have had similar issues in the past. It is something that happens here more frequently than it ever should. But we can't judge Bulgaria or it's people based on a vile few.
It's so awful... Big hug for you all... Couldn't it be a neighbour that uses this against foxes and jackals? I know the cats stay on your property when you're there but when you go to the other house they will probably rome around in the nearby area... It's hard... 😟

It happens all the time, in every village.
Especially to dogs with puppies.
Cats will also be shot by the hunters, speaking from bitter experience.
It's a mentality which will hopefully change over time.

Well, I had no idea that you had been pulled over qiute often. I really hope that this is not a trend. Have you been in touch with other brits from the area? As far as I am aware there are plenty living in VT region and if some of them have had the same experience with traffic police then you may think is tendentious. But I really hope it is not. 👍

When buying some bulk flour(25kg bags) recently in Sliven, we ran into some big bags of dog food(kg) for 13 leva. I'm not sure what the going price is in small pet shops for that size. We grabbed a bag and if I'm in a pinch I'll even give it to some local stray cats. 😁❤️ I'm glad your using the Patreon funds to feed the sweethearts. I get it, I really do. ❤️❤️

sorry guys, we had a bad experience a few years ago, we got broke into and they took all the new solar lights and power tools and microwave we had just bought, its bad when you know its actually a neighbour whos done it, ive tried to befriend the people around like you do, all the best to you guys.

I think there are many that really care, not sure if it's a generational thing, we've heard it is common in the villages. Accept and moving on now for us!

I can’t even watch all of this video, my heart goes out to you. British neighbours in our rural village had their lovely dog poisoned and we all suffered with them when the village pooch, a real character with one eye and busy busy nature suffered the same fate. I’m so sorry this has occurred for you guys, just know you aren’t alone.

Found your channel when I was idly wondering about holidaying/buying (hyper cheaply): these stories are too redolent of Borat for me too want to have any investment in that country. I understand that rationally one should maybe compartmentalise such relatively minor irritations as a hurdle to surmount as part of the 'package', but for me they seriously tarnish the whole experience.

@@ourderelictdream I think you mean that you shouldn't, and I'd agree. But I wouldn't agree that you should never make judgements at all. There are very good (and complex) reasons why property in Bulgaria is cheap and recent events not a million miles away highlight them.

I know this was filmed a few months agp, but I'm terribly sorry for what happened to the kitties. I have heard people complaining about the abandoned animals in Bulgaria, but you are a terrific example of making a (small) contribution (caring for your local strays) and making a huge impact in the world. Heart warming. P.S. I love those old beds, and big "score!" with those coins. I hope you find a pot of gold!

We have three cats that we brought from the UK, we can't imagine how awful it must feel to be targeted like this. 😢
This is very common here, there is no laws protecting animals like in the UK, its insane to think anyone would do this, we've heard some horror stories.
As a result we don't let our cats out, it just isn't safe for them, there's also snakes and foxes which can be sods too. Hope the other boy pulls through
Yeah it's a tough one..they were kittens of a stray that lived in our barn before we moved here..adopted as pets but always been outside. Definitely learning from it ☺️
There were laws passed in 2008, against abandoning, or killing/abusing cats and dogs.
Not one single prosecution since then!

Sorry to hear about your pets. My way to cope with such life events is to assume the least negative explanation, but take precautions against the worst.
In this case, for example, I would assume it was a tragic accident (cats found random source of poison, or perhaps a severely misguided and dimwitted person thought they were "helping" by euthanizing "neglected strays"). Putting my most "positive" spin on such an even helps deter me from descending toward a jaded, cynical, and misanthropic outlook toward the world.
However, assuming the "best", I would still plan for the worst explanation, i.e. some unhinged person hates you and/or your animals. That is to say, I would try to proactively protect my family, pets, and property going forward in a ways that are practical and effective, but also stop short of being obsessive, desperate, and fearful. Low-life people do occasionally litter the landscape of our lives, but try your best not to give them any power over your happiness moving forward. Bin the losers, and seek out the good people; they're much easier to find. ;-)
Like many things, this can be easier said than done. ;-) Best wishes to your family!
