    I'm a couple years late to this party, but wanted to thank you for the review. I just bought this lens, and wasn't expecting a lot from it. I haven't been feeling especially creative lately, but t turned out I had so much fun shooting with this lens! There is a real sense of freedom., especially when threading on Canon''s 500D closeup filter. The images are easily good enough for social media posting, and scouting ideas and locations on my 20Mpix camera. It was so easy to just go outdoors, switch on the camera, zoom and shoot handheld,; a real cure for creative block.

    I have a 14-140 lens for my current M4/3 system and have used before the 28-300 on my Nikon camera before. These 10x zooms are pretty much the same - one cannot expect miracles. Having said that, they are absolutely perfect for a vacation. During my last recreational trip, I carried 4 lenses in Istanbul. 3 were left in the hotel room and only used the super zoom. The freedom of 1) not changing lenses even once for days and 2) being able to shoot across the Bosporus strait even, was a bliss. And on occasions like that some softness in the corners or a bit less sharpness and contrast are negligible. You are there for the experience and the memories, not on a photographic competition.

    I got this lens with my EOS R6 and used it daily now for 2 months, makes me happy every day! I've used Nikon DX, FX, Olympus M4/3, Fujifilm X and I have never encountered a superzoom that delivers such amazing results. As a pixelpeeper I look for flaws all the time and if you let the auto correction do it's thing, it's hard to find anything wrong with this lens.

    Recently got this lens. I’m a landscape photographer and do a lot of mountain climbing. I can now go from 3 lens down to 1 and with IBS being so good I leave my tripod at home also. Not my go to lens on regular trips but if I’m concerned about weight it’s the only lens I take.

    Wow, that mechanical vignette is crazy! Add on the missing hood, you can really see Canon was going for cost savings on this. My first lens I bought when I got my first full frame camera, an A7ii, was the Sony FE 24-240mm. It was angriest beginner all purpose zoom range and while it's not a spectacular lens, it really doesn't have excellent image quality for its versatility. For travel or times when really only one lens to do it all from wide 24mm to a tele-photo 240mm, the are very convenient. I really didn't find any major flaws with the Sony. I ended up selling it as I got into faster primes and zooms naturally but there are times where I wish I still had it. Im not always trying to go for super artistic photography. Sometimes you just want to go light and get shots.

    28:58 I love that shot of yours. I am getting this lens from the eos RP kit, and I am glad I saw your review. I was planning on selling the lens because of the good deal I got from the kit but I actually want to keep it after your review. I am used to see awfull sharpness from super zoom lenses, and I found this one very much usable unlike before. Maybe I will start taking more care about the pictures I take than the actually sharpness of it also, which is a very good thing. Being able to free your mind while composing and taking pictures is a very nice thing to find. Was tricky to jump to mirrorless for me as I was shooting with 5d mark II until now, I found the A7iii a very good choice, but I find myself to enjoy shooting much more with canon's ergonomic. The new r5 and r6 made me buy the RP with confidence of Canon's future mirrorless capabilities. As usual, thank you very much for your review, with many greetings from Belgium.

      @@DustinAbbottTWI I ended up returning it. Not because of the 24-240 but because of the RP. CR3 is not fully supported by lightroom and doesn't have proper color managment and that wasn't mention by any review I watched. I tried DPP and found great result. But in the end I felt like these new technologies are not yet well established. Also the EVF gives me pain in the eye as I am very much sensitive to blue light. I didn't expected that either. So I finally found the best camera for me and I didn't expected that: the eos 200d. It has CR2, not the 3 like the 250d. And it has an OVF, not the best but still very nice to me. And the same articulated screen with dual pixel auto focus. the 24mp APSC has actually much better dynamic range than the RP at half the price. Of corse I won't have the same ISO performance but it is good enough up to 6400, not 12800. I will also have nice use of my EF glass on it as the center of the optic will be nice and bright on the APCS. This 24mp also matchs the IQ and details when comparing to the new sensors. I also found that the new R line up is priced very much to the top just because it is a fully new system and Canon wants to make the best benefit out of the "change all your gear" effect. The lenses comes at a very high price without any weather sealing or lens houd. I found a dust inside the lens 24-240 after 2 days of use!!! for a lens that ships on its own at 900$ I find it a very bad long term investment. I am gonna wait 2 or 3 more years to have CR3 fully understood by software ingeneers and Sigma, Tamron providing good quality, descent weather sealed optics. In the meanwhile I feel like OVF is still going to let me enjoy the 200d for a very long time if not 10 years.

    Although I am not the “superzoom” guy, I believe this lens is worth considering and not only for the versatility. Thanks for the great review. Coming from APS-C cameras D30, 10D, 40D, 70D, I've recently switched to the EOS-R. With the crop sensor bodies, travelling was always my 16-35L and 24-105 L. Bit of a pain to carry the extra lens, but the 24 on a crop sensor was often too long, and 105 very often too short. The 24-240 on a full-frame seems to be a great range for "I only want to carry 1 lens on vacation" I recently sold a bit of gear and got the 24-240 as my first RF lens. I have not really had a chance to shoot anything serious with it yet, so this review makes me feel better about my purchase. Yes, the vignetting is pretty odd, but since it's so easily correctable, it didn't factor in my decision at all. Bottom line, it's a compromise lens, for me chosen specifically for vacation shooting. If I want to shoot a serious landscape, I'll grab my 16-35, or if I'm specifically shooting wildlife, my 400 or 100-400 (though I'm hoping Sigma comes out with a decent RF zoom up to 500 or 600) Love your videos and bonus points for the Golden Retrievers!

    For what it is, the image quality is really really good. If Sony would have something in the same league, I would buy it. The Sony version is as soft as you would expect it to be for this type of lens.
    Canon goes the way of digital correction and I think, that this is the right way, as they don’t have to internally correct them to a level where the images get soft because of the corrections. As long I don’t see a degeneration in image quality let’s go for digital lens corrections. 🙌

    Thank you. Your summation in the end is very informative.
    See the thing is that today phone cameras have 10x digital zoom and are able to offer many good images through AI processing. So why would anyone want to buy this lens to produce average images that could possibly be worse than those shot by say a top end Samsung / Pixel / iPhone?
    In this day and age the only differentiator that justifies a dedicated camera set up is the unarguably superior optical image quality offered by a large sensor in the camera paired with a well-made lens with at least an f4 constant aperture.
    Every other image can be produced and even bettered by phone cameras.
    Am I right? Or am I talking through the wrong end?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  Рік тому +1

      I'm not saying that this isn't possible, but to date I have not reviewed a phone camera that could compare to a dedicated camera with a real sensor. There's only so much that you can do with processing. But at the same time, your general point is valid. I agree that the bigger differentiator will be the large sensor camera with good glass on it.

    Did you use any of the EOS - R onboard lens aberration corrections such as the peripheral illumination correction or distortion correction or perhaps the digital lens optimizer? Would any of these attributes make a difference with the pictures? Has firmware been issued for this particular lens?

      Hi Carl - all of the things you mention do make a difference (and were on), but only affect JPEG images. If you shoot JPEGs, then I would recommend having all of those on, as yes, it will make a difference to your final results. This review looks at RAW images primarily, which actually produces better results in the end with appropriate processing.

    Thanks for this review. I have the new R5 and am re-evaluating my lens collection, selling some of the EF glass and looking to add a few RF lenses. This, the 35 f/1.8, and the 24-105 mm f/4 are currently on the list as well as the 100-500 (I do have the EF 100-400 mk 2 so the 1-500 is not that important and even less so given its price). Do you plan to revisit any of your older lens reviews with the 45 MP R5 with the advanced AF system? I am wondering if I should wait a bit longer. Most of my shooting is done with top EF prime glass that canon probably won’t replace for a while, I suspect. So one or two of the lowest cost RF lenses will fit the bill nicely for me. Thanks again.

    Well, nobody can accuse Canon of not using computational photography anymore. We can see here with this lens they are using it in spades! Kind of repulsive to me the extreme vignette and distortion. I thought oh he's just got the lens hood on sideways, I've done that and that's how it looks, but NO, it's built in!!! I suppose it all depends on the final result but wow, really. Good information though I NEVER expected such built-in lens flaws from Canon, regardless of it being non L. I suppose it will be transparent to most amateurs, and maybe not matter but still that thing lists for $900 bucks at Best Buy, maybe if it was three or four hundred it would be more sensible to me. Glad you did the review, really a good heads-up. God bless, stay safe! PS Shoot deer not people, at least with a gun.

    Third party lens hoods are cheap enough so no gripe there really but Canon could give you one for a few pence but the cost of a weather seal at the mount end would be even fewer pence so it's just Canon being mean. Given the picture quality on this lens is almost as good as L series lens does that mean you are paying 3 times the price for a rubber weather seal and a lens hood?

    Im at a loss for these reviews.
    Years and years inreviews we are driven towards more expensive lenses having better optical performance. And now e re told it s not that of an issue.
    It s a really shit lens from anoptical perspective. You 're getting cropped images, not using the entire full frame format. No one is calculating the pixel loss. Sigma and Tamron have far better options.
    What s happening. Reviewers getting afraid that Canon won t send them the next lens for free?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 місяців тому +1

      With all due respect, this is a pretty critical review. And Canon has never, ever given me a free lens, so you're are making flawed assumptions. The bigger problem here (on Canon) is that there aren't any Sigma or Tamron RF mount lenses. It has been a closed system, so lenses like this are not getting the kind of competition that drives better lens design.

    • @MrRFasters
      @MrRFasters 5 місяців тому

      @DustinAbbottTWI Given yout review you got me wondering it s a sent down lens.
      For the quality mark: We agree on that. But given the quality RF EF adaptor rings the whole EF range is available as well. I think every Canon R owner has an adapter ring. Not loosing anything in optical or electronical camer or AF performance. My 2.8 Lenses actually perform better on the R8 adapted platform. So these lenses imo could and should be compared to their EF Sigma and Tamron full frame counterparts. And then they would loose big time. Being also waaaay to expensive.
      No one is doing that: I saw so many reviewers giving this lens " the benefit of the doubt" that I truly started wondering what was true. Years of true optical performance review education or acceptance of in camera or in app significant corrections. Then I ll stick to true optical performance. And giving your extensive quality reviews I think you ll do the same.
