One that needs attention, the Black Prince, a BR 9F, has just gone out of service on the North Norfolk railway, the poppy line. Her steam pipe is leaking and apparently its not cost effective to repair it.

    • @dominicbarden4436

I think that's because her boiler ticket's almost up. There's no point repairing something like the steam pipe if she's only going to be in service for another few months before going out of service again anyway. Better to withdraw her now and do the full overhaul all in one go.

One of the reasons for 9017 going to the Vale of Rheidol is, although the line is narrow gauge, the museum is in the old Standard gauge shed, 9017s old shed!

They aren't really, '38 is just the official year. The GW needed a bunch of secondary line locomotives and decided to economise by building the 'Dukedogs', basically sliding later pattern (and stonger) Bulldog frames under the Duke boilers and motion in place of the worn out originals. Both donor classes are related late Victorian/early Edwardian inside cylinder 4-4-0s, both had 5'8" drivers, but the 'straight frames' on dukes are stronger, partly because they were built later but also because they were heavier and had bigger boilers. So the frames are originally from 3425,, built in 1906, and the main Duke donor seems to have been 3253 of 1899. That said (without checking) the boiler was probably newer than 1899 and may also have been fitted to more than one locomotive previously - the GWR practiced Compeone6g Exchange Overhaul long before it got fashionable.

Charles Collett "troll ability" the very posh GWR board wanted a new beautiful steam engine class, as a way to have some laughts and fun, he put together the Dukes and Bulldogs parts and give them their new class.

Apparently 2-10-0s aren't allowed on the mainline rail network because of their flangeless middle driving wheels. Which seems counterintuitive as having a flanged central driving wheel would seem to more likely lead to derailment? Perhaps I am wrong but it seems a pity, no 9Fs on the mainline etc

  • @Tom-Lahaye
    @Tom-Lahaye 6 місяців тому +4

Some engines on the list will get an overhaul eventually, like Sir Berkeley and the Flying Pig. The first one, Aerolite, isn't a good candidate in my opinion, being that small, having one drive axle and thus a very low tractive effort makes her unsuitable for more than 2 or 3 carriages, which on almost every preserved line is insufficient. She was ever only intended to pull one carriage, the inspector's saloon.
5 of the locomotives I would certainly want to see restored in operational status are: the SE&CR D class 4-4-0 no 737 in the NRM, it's one of the most beautiful Victorian age locomotives.
Beattie well tank no 30587, LNWR Improved Precedent class no 790 Hardwicke, LSWR 415 class Adams Radial no 488 and LNER V2 class Green Arrow.
But for many classes it will never happen as they are too old, fragile and as one offs, too valuable to restore and lose a lot of the original substance as a matter of things.

There are SO many British Engines I’d restore. But I have to say my number one would be Green Arrow. the LNER V2s are some of my favorite engines of all time (along with the LMS Stanier Mogul) and it’s nothing short of a crime they stuffed the last one in a museum. 34051 Winston Churchill would be a close second, but I understand they want to keep most of that engine original since it did pull Winston Churchill’s funeral train.

    • @justanotherpersononyoutube7130
      @justanotherpersononyoutube7130 7 місяців тому +2

Apparently there's rumours that there's a plan to overhaul Green Arrow.
The only issue that's keeping them from overhauling GA is that monobloc cylinder block. The RM has said the cylinder block is "too significantly important" to fix it.

@@justanotherpersononyoutube7130 at this point I think I'd rather see a replica V2 and keep the monoblock rather than change the original. All preserved engines eventually reach the where the original metal wears out, and I'd rather green arrow was preserved for what it is, and get a 3 cylinder fix another way. From memory, inthink knkh the wheel centres on 4472 are original, even the frames were changed in the 30's.

"William Francis". The ONLY surviving Garratt built for UK service, Bressingam's oddly cute 0-4-0+0-4-0 has 3'-4" dia drivers, making it ideal for the 25mph limit on heritage lines. It weighs in about the same as the 2ft gauge ex-SAR NG16s found on the Welsh Highland. Let's see the NYMR's notorious dining set give that one any grief!!
On rhe NG, shout out for "Earl of Merioneth", the first newbuild - bigger than 15in gauge - in the preservation era. Likely to need new power bogies (it's a Double Fairlie), this machine is marks a major part of the Ffesterbahn's history.

My local heritage railway is the Severn Valley so I'm pretty familiar with both the Flying Pig and Gordon! I went to the Winter Gala in January and managed to travel on her final train up to Bridgnorth (and had actually travelled behind her several times during the last couple of years). She certainly performed well and is a lovely locomotive, if a little strange looking thanks to the high running boards! I have a soft spot for Gordon because she's a Longmoor loco, and the village of Liss, where the railway connected to the mainline between London and Portsmouth, was where my mother grew up.
There are a few unique survivors at the SVR: obviously there's 43106, but the railway's also home to the only Stanier 5MT mogul in preservation, no. 12368 (also numbered (4)2968), which returned to traffic at the same time as 43106 was making her final runs, the only surviving GWR 15xx 0-6-0PT: no. 1501, and GWR no. 813, a 'Swindonised' ex-Port Talbot Railway locomotive. They're also building a new-build BR Standard Class 3 2-6-2T locomotive.

Like many Preservation locos, 43106 is privately owned by a society as opposed to the Severn Valley where she's based. Their owners will discuss her future in due course but the SVR have a number of other projects at various stages of completion, alongside West Country class Taw Valley, whose own boiler ticket recently expired but is an SVR owned locomotive. These include nearly completed overhauls of a GWR small Prairie loco, Bradley Manor, a GWR Mogul, and a brand new locomotive BR Riddles Standard 3 Tank, 82045, of which there are none surviving in preservation. Most of these should be running by 2025, by which time a couple of the currently active locomotives will see their boiler tickets expire and be scheduled for overhaul themselves.

I like the idea of the Dukedog running again. A very good example of engineering repurpose without spending huge amounts of money on new locomotives for secondary lines.
Another I would add is the Midland Compound 4-4-0. This ran for many years on main line enthusiast specials, and is the only one preserved from 245 built. It has many parts in common with the Somerset and Dorset Junction 2-8-0s, of which there are two in operation, so manufacturing pattern parts should not be difficult.
And the Midland Johnson Spinner 4-2-2 and the sole Caledonian single. The Caledonian locomotive ran many railtours in the early 1960s and there are not very many locomotives from Scottish companies in active service. Although only single drivers, both were main line express locomotives in their day and would be capable of hauling trains up to 200 tons on heritage railways which do not have too many steep gradients.

For instance blue Peter the A2 is now being restored so will have A1 (peppercorn not Gresley) A2, A3 and A4 around. I think the one engine I could restore if I had the money would be NCB No. 24, currently on static display at the Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway, but originally in service at Waterside in Ayrshire (now the Doon Valley Railway). It's an Andrew Barclay 0-6-0, so probably a bit big for preserved service on the Doon Valley, unless that Railway's original ambition of running trains all the way between Waterside and Minnivey (near Dalmellington) came to fruition. As it stands, the engine would certainly be a handy size to run on the B&KR.

Gordon NEEDS to be restored, she is unique, the sole surviving LMR dub-Dee, the closest to my favourite dub-Dee, 601 “Kitchener” what died to a fusible plug failure, the same year 400 sir guy Williams suffered the same death, so Gordon NEEDS resorting, same with all the other LMR survivors, and those who didn’t survive need replicas, ASAP, and the A3 needs rerouting, so not to sit atop where Longmoor downs was, and the railway needs resurrection, NOW

Honestly have to say I would not bother restoring Stepney as there are loads of other Terriers around, many in working order. The single most historically important locomotive type that wasn't preserved, in my view, was the pioneering Churchward "Saint/Lady" class, so it's good that the gap has been filled by the newbuild "Lady of Legend", though sad that it won't be seen on the main lines. Have to admit that restoring a "double framer" like Earl of Berkeley or City of Truro would be rather fun.

7027 Thornbury Castle was cannibalised and has lost its boiler to the 4800 project. It might be rebuilt with a larger boiler, perhaps the LMS 2A boiler as fitted to the Royal Scot class, to produce a "Super Castle", oil fired. From watching the Castles at work, I suspect that they are still far from the peak of their potential.

With 7 other castles preserved then providing parts to get an operational “Star” let’s face it lode star 4003 not going to restored to running, is it really such a loss. Is not as if there aren’t 7 other castles available.
When a person wrote into steam railway that we didn’t need a second star i facepalmed, literally if we don’t need a 2nd star that would get an example out and running then why on earth do you need an 8th Castle.
Pendennis, Clun and Earl mount Edgcumbe all running at the moment and others awaiting restoration.

    • @physiocrat7143

      @@michaelmcnally2331
The County class had LMS designed boilers as the had the flanging blocks at Swindon for the 8Fs they built there. The Castles were originally intended to have the 4800 class boilers but the ones that were fitted had to be smaller and lighter to satisfy weight restrictions at the time.
A second Star would be interesting to see but a significant downgrade which would only be used on museum lines. The current performance of the Castles now running suggests that the underlying design might still have unrealised potential.
It is significant that further Castles were built after the County class. There was a rumour in the early 1960s that a further 30
Castles were being built, due to lack of confidence in the diesels that were coming into service. This sounds fanciful but more likely is that the locomotives were being very thoroughly overhauled to as-new condition almost until the end of their careers; they were certainly still performing as well as they had ever been.
If it had not been for the mad dash to get rid of steam, spearheaded by the notorious Stanley Raymond, the steam fleet would have continued in service well into the 1970s. I believe Raymond was also responsible for widepread closures in Australia.

one of the reasons lists like this make me annoyed is because you've just revolved it around engines that are similar to thomas characters...
    1. Where on earth would Aerolite run? it'd probably slip all over the place and would cost a decent amount of money for it to do bugger all... furness 20 and 25 could do more to actually generate money for their continued service and they're just as old!
    2. Terriers are sort of useful at best (See SVR's spring gala timetable for proof) and we have plenty of them, let stepney rest... it's had it's run and it's costing more and more money and for what? it's old!? it appears in thomas?! it was the bluebells first engine, remember it for that not the other pointless crap... and there's a reason the bluebell only run 2 bogied coaches with fenchurch or 4-wheelers... they're bloody pathetic!
    3. I agree with the ivatt, ownership problems are preventing it from being restored. another issue is the locomotive beats itself to pieces, after reading the SVR's quarterly magazine each year it needed to come out in January otherwise it would have just fallen apart... I was on it's last train however and it was a very good sendoff...
    4. Dukedog is nice but at the end of the day apparently it's frames are borked and it's at the Vale of Rheidol museum now.
    5. Gordon... the thing with no firebox and soo big for the SVR that it has to go 5mph over Victoria bridge... good luck getting money for that when the SVR are building a new 3MT and restoring 4150, working on 34027 and have many other engines of more sound condition and use than 600... heck there's calls to get the ivatt 2 out of the engine house and stuff like the 8F would be more reasonable because they actually ran over the line at some point in time!
IMO they need to either sell it or keep it in the engine house... they can't do much with it...

Imagine she was numbered 3106 in LMS days, which in the real world is sadly impossible, because although the Ivatt 4MTs totalled 162 locomotives, they were built between 1947 and 52, so only the first 3 of them saw service on the LMS.
Also, thankfully the Flying Pig has been replaced with LMS Stanier Mogul 2968, which needed to come back at some point, and she has, in proper LMS numbering no less.
Anything to see less BR numbering in LMS-designed engines.
