From about the 1830s til the 1880s there were straw top hats for the summertime. I saw paintings of men wearing them from that period in history books about America when I was a boy in NYC during the Mad Men era.

Yes, usually black or brown works w anything, but yeah, anything dark,to hide perspiration stains
Loved the last two videos on straw and other summer hats, thanks! Quick question. I bought a Stetson Pedro center dent Panama from JJ a few weeks ago and really like it. But I think it looks best with a classic "down in the front, up in the back" brim orientation. Looks great with my biz coat/tie attire during the week. When I snap the front up, it looks a little goofy (too high) and my wife says "nope." What is a good panama that I can wear "up" in front, that looks more casual and modern with less dressy clothes? I don't care for stingy brims and like them more 2 1/2 to 3 inches in brim size.
Wow,too many to mention. That's most of our inventory. Come see me any day but Tuesday or Wednesday, I'll spend lots time w you, we'll get it right, as far as your wife and the brim-up thing?.. the ladies hate it, it's a guy thing. A cool thing. She will probably never dig it snapped up..snap it down when you're with her, she'll Love it.
If u come in together we can probably find a chic looking brim-up you both like, it'll take just the perfect hat, but it's possible..

Great job Kevin, as usual, I never gave much thought to Panama’s didn’t realize there were so many styles and options and materials and the craftsmanship is a work of art but I still putting together my felt fedora collection but I see me getting a Panama soon, speaking of felt when are the new Fall & winter Fedoras coming out?
RB King RB there are way,way more..I have over ten brands, four or five qualities, and 2-3 colors in each style...
Then there are different brim widths, crown shapes, prices.. so, so many more... but I don’t want to overwhelm or bore folks..
there is a lot. The new felts come in around September through October, we get few things July and August, fill ins on popular models, and right now we are stocked on Stetson felts,for the summer..they slow down, but still sell. For the most part the new models are slated to arrive September first , but they always trickle in all throughout the month of September. The custom,European and imported things arrive a little later, mid September and October..
I’m gonna purchase a straw hat tomorrow, I have it narrowed down to two, the boulder or the Cody , need it to be durable & keep my ears shaded and keep me cool on these hot humid Alabama days, the humidity gets so bad we refer to it as the air you can wear, I really like the Cody with it’s eyelets but would like to learn about the Dri-Lex sweat band in the Boulder. Need to get with you about witch one would best suit my needs
I await with bated breath for the arrival of the fall fedora collections. I have two hats picked out but the colours I need won't be available until the fall. I have spent so much time searching for the two hats I will buy this fall, I want to go into hibernation until the new hats appear in the stores. Occasionally time moves too slow but of course, it is too hot for felt right now, anyway.
Gotta love that crazy top hat. I'd wear that, to a 420 festival or a couple of other stoner events. Would I wear it on the street. Hell yes. Normality is not my cross to bear.

Daniel G. It’s navy blue though, The Ace. And u wear a large in every other hat, but in the Ace ,yes, u might take a medium
or a large with a lot of padding, hard to say, I’m home now.cLl me at the shop during work hours,800 622 1911, I can try one on again, and tell u for sure. I don’t want to guess if u are ordering it. I’m like 1/4-3/8 since cutting my hair, not exactly sure..
But I hunk it will be medium, almost everyone took medium in these, we waited two months for them, and like four pieces arrived, in one color.. so yeah, if blue is ok, act soon, if u wanted black..hang tight, something like that will arrive soon. The Baltimore diamond and the Baltimore bebop, both come in black, arriving soon, among other styles in black.
I note you caress, squish and smush the straw hats with aplomb. I would fear the straw would crack and break. But then, the humidity here is 7% right now, and maybe the climate in NY is easier on the materials? Is there additional care I should be giving them?
I don't slap the fragile or crunchy straws, I slap the ones that feel like rock hard plastic like shantung, or Palm which is ultra heavy and durable..
Panama, sisol, baku,parabuntal..
all are lightweight and non slap-able🤪 ..and the really soft, expensive Panama can be caressed and bent... because they're so fine, the Nizza, for instance.. I caressed it aggressively for the camera to convey to the viewing audience how it feels, and I wouldn't do that with the Panama's that cost $125-150..it'd kill them.
panamas vary greatly,some are soft like fine silk..others are laminated w hard plastic coatings of stiffener..
I sell all kinds, hundreds of types.
I rarely show the super delicate ,fragile stuff because I hate it,and don't suggest them to my clients..
Also,they dry out and dehydrate as they grow older,so the hat you wore for ten years is way drier now than the day u bought it.
I'm new to hats and I'm quickly becoming a hat collector/ hoarder. 😀
It’s really easy, they start adding up..u rationalize it in your head,”well, u need a straw for summer, a felt, then u need a cap,a summer cap, and maybe a cheaper rain hat or lite felt for bad weather, so u don’t mess up your good hats, then u get into vintage hats, and u must try a couple of those cavanaugh edges or older Borsalino, or..maybe a crushable travel hat,a travel straw, maybe a formal hat like a homburg ,derby ..
and u have to try a casual hat,maybe pork pie or a small brim” the list goes on, u can start collecting them like 😜 crazy, it’s easy, I’m working here 24 years, we get two free hats a year if we work full time. So do the math, I have a lot of hats I’ve acquired too... it’s good to give a couple away, it’s a special gift..
but hey, enjoy those!!
@@KTGHATS my goal is to get at least one hat that I really like of every style for each season. After that I can expand to extra colors of each style. I have a plan. Lol. Right now my favorite is a vintage Stetson royal fedora . Next I am planning on an open road.

You are correct, the Condor, but that’s an old video, I don’t know if that’s still being made..although there are a lot of flat brimmed hats coming out like that, it’s a fairly popular thing now. Flat brims.. there should be something coming, most straws arrive late April through mid May

I love the Gun Club models, fom the Dune to the leather band iterations. What do you recommend in a summer straw hat that is similar, what models of any brand do you think is similar? I’ll be honest, we don’t really carry nothing like that this year, Stetson isn’t making a lot of things in that outback shape this summer, the only models I can really think of that are current are The Stetson Limestone, or the Stetson Tallahassee , there’s very few right now in their line

Yeah, many of the vids from the shop recently are done on my cell phone, snuck in at last minute, I’m not allowed to make videos when I’m on the sales floor, or at least, I don’t do it, because the boss is very strict about phones, iPads and stuff on the sales floor. I tend to make these videos rushed, before work opens..on my cell. I’ll work on it,
I’ll start bringing my digital microphone and iPad to work, that rig is far superior, and small enough to use there. Thanks for the kind and constructive feedback, I’ve gotten enough complaints, to the point where I need to stop phoning in videos from work, and start bringing in another rig to film on..thanks again,

I’ve grown my hair longer ( because of the COVID thing) top, sides, back, and bangs and find my size has gone from 7 1/2 to 7 5/8.
I wish I had a variety of hat bands like your shop does... especially for my Panamas :)
In summer we sell $10 clip on bands, like 25-35 colors,prints..
usually june-sept but this year we haven't ordered them yet, it's an off the website item,and nobody's shopping. They'll be back though.

I have a weird question and hope it isn't a faux pas... But I bought a Stetson Shantung open road. I was wondering if it's possible to steam the brim so it's flat instead of curled up.
U can try to flatten it. But it’ll take a lot..steaming the brim throughout, (without steaming the leather sweatband or outer band.,it’ll damage them)
You can try steaming it and then putting very heavy objects on top to dry....wooden boards, books, heavy weights on top, etc.. it’ll take some work, and more than one process, it’s doable but risky, sometimes u do that stuff and regret it, u never know the results until it’s done.
Try the weights, use a cloth first, like a bandana,the something flat like a board or book, with very heavy weights on top,
Steam will do it, but it’ll work without steam too. Keep it like this over night, as many nights as u can.

Just saw this comment, perhaps the best comment ever left on my videos, ok, you got me there, that hat sells to ladies way more.BUT....those specs U gave me were kind of crazy though, they don’t really make flat, 4” brim straws w flat crowns for guys! So let’s be fair,u stumped me, but I did have a hat w those specs,right? Now, they do make tons of Gambler straws and cool flat brimmed things that u would like, but it’ll be a typical, Gambler sized brim.. or a flat 3” brim. Try the Stetson Condor at around 12:58 in the vid

Does JJs carry any western style hat bands like a concho? Been thinking of ordering a black bogart with a concho band if you have one. Should be a different kind of look.
No only horse hair western bands but I saw cheap decent ones on Amazon I searches "concho hat band" I think.

That’s a really old hat, long gone from our stock.. I’ll be totally honest, I remember the hat, but not the name of it, it was a custom job we had designed from Biltmore hats.
You know what's odd? Usually when I like a content provider and start watching their videos, I start getting suggestions for other similar videos. I guess there just isn't much of a market for hats and guitars lol

I graduated from one of the schools in the Consortium with NY School of Visual Arts & I used to paint pith helmets for friends. BTW you look great in every hat you put on. I like hats but I have a big German head & am not pretty so I don’t look great in hats but I wear them anyway. We might have been separated @ birth. I got the autism & artistic ability & you got the nicely shaped head & musical 🎼 talent.

Look in our summer section, we have them but they're out if season, we don't have many right now.
Clip on bands($10)are available usually in summer only.
They come in solid cotton, paisely cotton and paisely silk , florals in silk or cotton, and polka dots in cotton.
U can get a tie dyed effect w bleach and water.. but nope. No tie dyed clip ons,our hatmaker can make a sewn on band one for u in tie dye but u need to send the hat and it'd be $45

That is an older Stetson straw hat made of Hemp Milan, I don’t think they make it any longer, but they have similar models.

That’s a custom jab made in the JJ hat center workshop, u can have anything made to order, but it can be a little pricey going custom, that’s an open crown flat brimmed bolero in royal blue.
my last purchase, I ordered a Band change for the bleached summer hat. Question: do you folks keep the little bow on it....I m a formal dressed and hat guy, the little bow is quite a statement to me.
Of course, he will build you a new dress band , with the exact same style bow, always.. it’s standard.

Hi Kevin from Australia. I have a question if I may. I have found a Borsalino Panama hat brand new here in Australia. I will have to have it shipped as it is in another city. My head measures 60cm. The hat in question is a size 60. I wear quite well a size 60 Akubra with a little padding under the band.
In your experience are Borsalino hats true to size or should I step up or down a size.

Borsalino and the Italian hats in general get a little tighter. Get a size up if I were you.
Hard to say, Borsalino Panama hats are made by another company,Tesi. They usually run true to size, but they vary,a lot..I suggest to never go tight, always safer w extra room rather than not enough room

I didn’t get on with the straw at all... Glad I did check them out first though. The sizing was all over the place. For now I think I will just settle for beautiful felt hats. 🙏

@@KTGHATS I just bought some hair spray and used it on a cowboy hat with a fedora style crown, wish me luck! Will let it dry a bit more and them put 50 lbs of flat washers boxed in 5 lb boxes on it for a couple days!!
