You should just post a video that spends 1 second on each mechanically unique card released this year. It would be 38 minutes long.

Players feel overwhelmed because the corporation is showing it's colors. THe moment they removed the MSRP and raised prices it was already long since dead.
The game has been stale and becoming a shell of itself. This began with Secret Lairs being injected into the narrative as well as the writing staff and design team being absolute trash. Everything has a new mechanic rather than just an ability or vanilla. It's suffering the Yu Gi OH issue where every card is a novel that makes the games rules obsolete and not even necessary to understand.
We then compound this with release after release after release and the glazing people gave MaRo when they should have been admonishing him since 2016 or sooner is starting to slow down as people realize he is and always has been a corporate mouthpiece trying to placate problems. The core audience of MTG have been ignored.
This isn't product fatigue, it's corporate blandness fatigue

It's been YEARS since MaRo cared about the community that he isn't personal friends with.
His answers are cold, curt, dismissive. He speaks in half truths and knowingly lies by omission.
If they released 50 products last year, MaRo with a straight face would tell you that they are only releasing 49 this year and then tell you to hush and stop whining.
MtG can still be fun, as long as you completely cut out WotC from your lives whenever possible. They have poisoned the well with corporate greed.

Also, with all these new cards is steep prices. Of non-reprints, 2024 has 208 cards over $10. 2023 has 152. 2022 has 102. 2021 has 38. 2020 has 63. 2019 had 24. Not only can I not keep up, but the stuff I keep up with I also won't buy.

I feel the opposite, lot of good cards released (at least for what I focus on) are sub 10 dollar pieces, and the ones that go for more are just flashy staples I realistically wouldn't need unless for a high powered or competitive game. Outside of lands, I feel like there are maybe 5 cards a set over $10 I wouldn't mind having, yet don't prioritize getting unless my deck can immediately slot it in.

Cutting back main products just isn't enough. With Starter Packs, Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Commander Decks, Collector Commander Decks, Jumpstarts, Gift Boxes, and probably a few others that I missed, there are still far more products than there ever were before. They need to reconsolidate them again.

I'm done trying to keep up and done buying sealed products to hold long term. In 2024 I shifted my spending to focus on Pre-release weekend, singles, selected Commander precons, plus an occasional bundle if a set is great. 2025 will see a further reduction in my spending with the additional focus on UB.

cool, im glad theyre cutting back a little. foundations made it a lot easier for me to introduce ppl to magic and look at all the options. And even then they still found it overwhelming to learn and keep track of everything, lol. But now that i'm thinking about it further, my friends don't really try to keep track of all the products. They just gravitate towards a set that really fits the aesthetics and flavors they like, and only buy from those sets

I am always impressed when I see UA-camrs and Twitch streamers playing Magic and knowing what each card does. Now, I see there's 2000+ unique cards.... I'm not a "new" player but I am a novice and can't imagine memorizing so many cards and mechanics. That's like knowing a new language. If it weren't for UB, I cannot imagine new players getting into this game. Ironically, it is the UB making older players upset and leaving the game. Those that stay either hate the format and will let everyone know at every opportunity.... or they don't say anything and leave new players feeling gatekept from the game.

I generally feel like I’m at a standstill against mildly upgraded newer precons and can’t tell if it’s bc my heart and brain checked out or if the power creep just spiked with Bloomburrow forward.

So many cards are coming out that it is making games longer. When people need to pause a game to read 50% of cards played, add 15-30 minutes to every commander game.

You don’t have to keep up. Buy singles for the deck you’re constructing. Buy reserve list cards. You don’t have to purchase sealed product from every set.

  • @Mtonazzi

I started buying then 4th edition was in my language (collecting pretty cards), dipping my toes onto the actual game by Ice Age and going to tournamentes by the end of the Rath Cycle and start of Urza's... and every set, every box and every booster was a treat. We wondered what the new set would be about, speculated on the lore, cetera.
Now I went from "I cannot keep up" (due to a mix of irl responsibilities and a barrage of product) to "I don't care".
I don't even buy singles anymore since I don't want to give Hasbro any of my money and just proxy up what I play with (and encourage my friends to do the same, since we play "kitchen table" anyways instead of sanctioned events). Last I've "gotten" (by the previous mentioned ways) was a "bloomburrow only EDH deck" since it's art and lore kind of remineded me of the magic of old, but it was a single set and... the magic died soon to me, and back to my apathy I go.

    • @Mtonazzi
      @Mtonazzi День тому

Also, to the chart at 5:08 there were less products (both "main" and side things) in the span from when I've bought my first box of 4th ed to when I started my hiatus from MTG (tournament burnout) at the end of Mirrodin, which was a period of 10 years, than the products released just on 2022

Mark rosewater no longer gives a hoot about the health of the game. Period end of story anyone thinking otherwise is delusional. The only thing they care about is sales numbers if the game became highly collected but not played like Pokemon he'd be ok with that.

  • @bloomcrawler

As a limited player I really like more pre-releases. This really hurts collector's who want to complete there sets, through buying packs. I play budget decks, primarily built from my draft chaff. I highly encourage players to pick a high power deck to build that never gets old to play, and the rest just be budget low power level so you can make a lot of them without breaking your pocket.

MTG is a bit ridiculous in how often they release new products... But honestly i don't see a need to get involved with every new thing. Like... i keep an eye out for any cool commanders to possibly make a deck about but my latest one was Nahiri forged in fury (and later Bhaal lord of murder but that deck sucked and i broke it down) and i am hyped for the race set for new vehicles for my kotori but aside from that? I am hyped for the space set but aside from that? i sleep and enjoy my commander games. Either way maybe i'd buy a precon in the future.. But in general i just buy singles really, screw boosters

  • @griner65

I am just generally checked out. I watch a few content creators, but not full videos as much anymore. This is the first time in over 15 years that I have not looked over a single full set for the new cards. I only looked over 2 or 3 sets in 2023. Makes me sad that I have no idea of any new cards other than the few content creator videos I watch. The few times I have played commander I have just had to kinda ignore new cards and rely on other people's reactions. I just focus on my decks which I have not updated for 2+ years, and let the table play. If I have to directly interact only then I pay attention.

I went from spending thousands of dollars a year for multiple boxes from each set to spending ZERO dollars in 2024 simply because of product exhaustion.
I could afford to spend this before because there wasn't as much product, but now? With too much product, even as a collector, I lost interest in buying new product. This year I will likely buy some singles of the best cards from 2024, but as for boxes, probably will never buy again.
Congratulations WotC, you played yourself. You've taken people who loved a product and spent tons of cash on it, and made them almost hate the product. I personally know another five people that went from spending thousands a year to spending maybe a hundred dollars. Don't get me wrong, I still love the game, but I've grown to hate the marketing, the company, and the greed that has them assuming the customer is just an endless supply of cash.
Between me and those other five people I know, I'm sure that WotC is down $10,000 or more, and I live in a small Canadian city.
As for Maro's comment that they made less product, I call BS. They may have made less "sets" but they're secret lairs and specialty cards are through the roof, so really, did you make less product? Not really, you just catered more to people who love gimmicks and you packaged a more expensive product that the common younger player cannot afford. You really are NOT listening to your customer who want less product per year, significantly less commanders per set, more revisits to old planes and characters in the lore, less "theme" (really? Racecars and cowboys?), more revisits to old mechanics to add more cards per mechanic, and less power creep. I've seen multiple cards in one year that replaced an old card only to be replaced again within the same year due to that power creep. It's ridiculous. WotC, get your ish together, and stop driving away customers.
Also, stop listening to these cultural sensitivity consultants. 95% of your players had no idea that Kaladesh was even made up of two words. Of the 5% that did, 99% of those had no idea that Kala COULD be interpreted as problematic or offensive, so you altered a plane's name to appease maybe two people that nobody would take seriously, like, or want to play with anyways. These consulting firms go out of business if there are no issues, so they are gonna make darn sure they find or create one to justify their existence. Now, with your statement regarding the name Kaladesh, you've actually drawn attention to a non-existent problem, highlighted it, and made a term that had basically faded from existence already into something thousands, if not millions, know about and prolonged the life of that term. Great job, again, you played yourself. You guys really do NOT think things through at WotC, and at this rate, you're going to sink your company as it becomes more and more of a laughing stock.
I, for one, hate what you've become and despise what you are doing to the game I've loved for over 25 years.

  • @todharter5195
    @todharter5195 Годину тому

The true problem is the power creep. I mean, I'm tired of so many new sets and cards, sure, but power creep WILL destroy the game at a fundamental level at a certain point, and it sure seems like we're approaching that now.

You play the game buy spending money for online decklists. If you like any of the 70% of useless cards and combos, you will be punished. If the game of 100 card singleton doesn't end before turn 7, People now complain. Commander is basically standard at this point, you see the same cards from the people who win, it's very META now, there's little innovation, and the game punishes you for not using the internet like a cheat guide, and having a deep wallet. It's very far from being a game of skill. It's a game for spoiled pigs, who use it to overcompensate for how pathetic the competitive players are as people.
