To tell one of my bosses stories. There was once a female accountant who had been the boss of her department for quite some time. In a meeting she was complaining that numbers the presenter had in his excel spreadsheet showing on the projector weren't right. She had her portable calculator with her and showed the presenter what she thought the answer was. Well long story short the engineers in the room quickly identified she wasn't using the order of operands with her calculator. The CEO was in attendance, and lets just say, the soon to come audit wound up with a firing.

Sadly math is not being taught it’s just a picture book to the next generation. I run a small booth at events on the regular and my oldest niece 28 can’t understand how I add everything in my head and apply discount percentages without having to use my phone. I’ve tried teaching her but she just tells me how it’s not possible for her and starts up her calculator app. I remember when we weren’t allowed to use calculators. Horror of horrors had to add, subtract, multiply and divide on paper or in our heads. I didn’t get to use a calculator for even basic stuff until my freshman year and by then I didn’t need to. Sad.
P.S. Don’t even get me started on the ignorance about decimals, and fractions. Trying to convince them that 1/4, .25, and 25% of 1 are all the same makes my eyes bleed. Not to mention the condescension as I was told that the new way of doing math was better. What new way math is fricking math are you kidding me oh my fricking god. Ok need a breath lmao. Guess I started ooooops.

But whatever you do DO NOT and i repeat DO NOT give the change after the cashier puts in the cash amount. The time i did that was at a Burger King. The total was something like $18.27. I decided i didn't need more ones and i just hated carrying change in pockets so i have the guy $23.27. Right off the bat he goes you are giving me too much. I told him i didn't want any change just paper. The first time he shorted me so I hand him the money and told him to try again. This time he hands me too much money. I hands it back to him and I tells him try again. So this time he got the store manager. Btw, I even told the employee all I wanted was 5 bucks. It didn't sound right. The manager shows up and i explained what i did. Even he came up short the first time. I tells him all i want is 5 bucks and that's it. So he took a 20 and a 10 of of the till, force handed it into my palm, and tell me to grab my food and get the hell out. Normally I'd feel guilty in taking too much cause in the long run it's the customer who pays for it in the end usually. But this was the one time i didn't mind keeping the extra cash. As i was driving home I thought to myself that has got to be one of the dumbest managers. He'll find out when counting the till that I was right. I just couldn't believe it.
This is simple basic math. This was also around the time when the cash register manufacturers were starting to have these machines tell you what change to give. They should have put some warning in the documentation like.......WARNING!!!!! Knowing how to make change is still paramount.

I got my 🫏 beat by my dad a machinist of 40 years at the time for struggling to wrap my head around “simple math” to my dad while i was in the second and third grade. I grew up in the same small town my dad did. Fast forward to 8th grade in coach harris’s algebra class. My first endeavor with algebra aka dads simple math i had been manipulating numbers on sheets and sheets of paper in long form for so long at that point without knowing there were letters in the numeric system, i could transpose most of the numbers in my head to figure out the answers to actual real world problems. The plug and play formulas they teach now so kinds can understand the motions without having a clue what they are actually doing or what applications that knowledge could be used for just confused me. So i did it the way i had been doing it for a decade. Problem was there wasn’t enough room on the paper the 10 question test were written on to show long hand work, so i just wrote down what i could not retain in my head between steps and figured out the answer. About the 3rd test coach harris is grading test and he comes up to my desk and exclaims i need to show my work. I explained the situation and he insists i need to show what im doing so he knows im not copying. I ask if i had the same answers as anyone around me and he switched gears and exclaimed he needed to see i was understanding the curriculum and not that he thought i was cheating. So the next test took me all class to write out step by step how i was manipulating numbers to come up with the answers to each of the 10 questions. I had 4 pages of math front and back stapled to my test sheet which was also full up front and back. I watched as he flipped through everyones single page assignments until he got to mine. His face lit up as he thumbed through my notes. Then he comes to my desk and exclaims this time i am a genius…. For midevil times, there is an easier way son we dont have to do all this any more. Just plug in the numbers to the formula and done. He exclaimed i was just as hard headed as my daddy who he taught how to do this same process. He gave me credit for it for i put in the work and not just memorized the formulas but had an in depth understanding of the entire process. Not just memorized what to do but an in depth understanding as to why, what all those numbers meant for each step. He warned me tho that the younger teachers in highschool would not give me credentials for this work as they no longer teach that process and the teachers themselves would not understand it… he was right. I still drag it out now and then when i get a chance to settle curiositys. Im pretty certain i knew where the end of the trail of space shuttle parts was from the Columbia disaster that went right over my head a day before nasa using the altitude stated on the news over dallas, and my neighbors report of having a hefty metal part landing in his yard 5 minutes after the shuttle passed. I figured for a 5 minute free fall at a terminal velocity of 120 mph to determine the altitude over Nacogdoches texas then triangulated where that course intersected the ground right about toleto bend reservoir at the eastern state line. Im a licensed engineer on a towboat now. I use it now and then to figure up weights of displaced water. I once hauled off 43,000 pounds of trash off a rundown 85’long by 35’wide boat that was 3.5 inches lighter draft when i was done.

It's gotta be that new math thing. Y'know, the one that says 2 +2 can = 5? I can't come up with anything else. Thinking about it makes my head hurt

A long long time ago….they used to use corporal punishment to help slow learners focus. Yes, I know many persons with intellectual disabilities were unfairly punished…but somehow, in this particular situation, I believe a good ole whacking with the yardstick of reason would have been justified.

It's the education system's fault. Once we eliminate the _No Child Left Behind Act,_ and teach classes that actually need to be taught, we might actually have a chance to redeem ourselves

2100...now, I see how she could have made this mistake without the critical thinking skills a lot of us enjoy and take for granted. And it's easy to simply write this person off as a moron and be done with it.
But all I'm saying is that I wasn't born with those skills, and neither was she. Noboy is.
The difference is, someone taught them to me, to us, and then taught us how to keep developing those skills as we go through life.
So my question is, who failed this poor girl?
