To tell one of my bosses stories. There was once a female accountant who had been the boss of her department for quite some time. In a meeting she was complaining that numbers the presenter had in his excel spreadsheet showing on the projector weren't right. She had her portable calculator with her and showed the presenter what she thought the answer was. Well long story short the engineers in the room quickly identified she wasn't using the order of operands with her calculator. The CEO was in attendance, and lets just say, the soon to come audit wound up with a firing.
Sadly math is not being taught it’s just a picture book to the next generation. I run a small booth at events on the regular and my oldest niece 28 can’t understand how I add everything in my head and apply discount percentages without having to use my phone. I’ve tried teaching her but she just tells me how it’s not possible for her and starts up her calculator app. I remember when we weren’t allowed to use calculators. Horror of horrors had to add, subtract, multiply and divide on paper or in our heads. I didn’t get to use a calculator for even basic stuff until my freshman year and by then I didn’t need to. Sad. P.S. Don’t even get me started on the ignorance about decimals, and fractions. Trying to convince them that 1/4, .25, and 25% of 1 are all the same makes my eyes bleed. Not to mention the condescension as I was told that the new way of doing math was better. What new way math is fricking math are you kidding me oh my fricking god. Ok need a breath lmao.
