2018 Kia Stinger 2.0T Base Model First Drive Review

- I was able to convince Kia to give me the keys to a base model with the 2.0L turbo engine and just one option (active safety package). Instead of a "stripper" model that I was expecting, the base Stinger is an incredibly good value. It's loaded with enough standard features that it makes a compelling cross-shop for top-end Camry and Accord shoppers looking for more excitement in their daily drivers. It's also an excellent value when stacked up against base luxury vehicles like the Lexus CT, Audi A4, BMW 320i, Infiniti Q50 or Mercedes CLA.

Kudos on being the only review of the 4 cylinder so far.
Seriously. That's the only one that I'm interested in, so I've been going through a bunch of South Korean reviews for several weeks now.
@@PlaylistsFromMars Ive had one for about 10 months and didn't disagree with anything he said. If you haven't decided yet, I recommend
Yeah the 3.3 is obviously the more wanted option but theres roughly a 10k differences from this to that. Glad to see someone reviewing the more pocket friendly version lol
Alex, I so appreciate your being able to review both the 3.3 and 2.0 ltr versions of this cool little sport sedan. It appears that the consumer will get more bang for the buck on both models. Very nice.
I love that you showed a base model, appeals to both markets.
Thank you for doing a base model! This is the one I'm most interested in and nobody else seems to review it
Kia makes an amazing car
Consumers: “iTs sTiLl a KiA”
Porsche Panamera & Kia Optima got married and this is the baby.
Kind of, except they got the rear lights from Maserati GT lol. It does look better than the original Panamera though.. I still gag at the memory of that thing.
@@SergePupko I must be the only one who actually likes the original Panamara.
Very thankful to see a review of the base version and the subsequent comparisons. Too many reviews of the loaded ones but none of the lower trims. Good work Alex!
Alex , u are by far the bessst reviewer for cars on the internet .. love the stats u put on screen
Alex, I especially appreciate your reviews regarding rear seat leg/head room and comfort (something the other UA-cam auto reviewers barely cover or just ignore). Your reviews are always informative, helpful and to the point. Other car reviewers should take note (or lose subscribers)! Keep up the great work!
At 6'3" I couldn't agree with you more.
Drove the stinger on an autocross course at SEMA. I loved it.
A V6 Camry XSE costs like $38k these days and the Stinger will blow it out of the water.
B. Robertson it's about more than 0-60 times you know.
Lol! The v6 Camry has 300+hp that 2.0t stinger ain't touching that Camry I'm sorry LoL
The 2.0 stinger looks horrible. The 3.3 looks way better but I rather get a 2014 supercharged Jaguar xjl all wheel drive for $35k then get a basic ass kia stinger smh
Stinger is a true performance car. Putting a V6 in a putter doesn't automatically make it a sports car. There is more to drive dynamics than 0-60.
B. Robertson lmao in the real world your fwd will spin before hitting grip. Awd won't slip. Not to mention the money you save a 500$ tune will murder the camry. With a better warranty and a damn good looks with practicality. There's no comparison. I'd take this all day
Looking the the 2.0 as an alternative to a CUV. Great review as always Alex. You're one of the best car reviewers out there!
Once again, great first drive review, AoA. I can't wait to see (and review) the Base & Premium 2.0T models of the Stinger.
From one car reviewer to another, keep up the great work. Hopefully, Kia will send you one of these Stinger Sportbacks sooner than later!
Incredible! I am hoping to pick one up in the near future once my optima lease is up!
LOL me too! Only couple of months in my optima lease so about 2 and a half more years to go! hopefully by then (2020) , kia will have the korean badges in the US models.
Sweet!
Omar Rodriguez me too!
Omar Rodriguez I have a 2016 SX Turbo but I really want a Stinger GT.. not too sure if I can afford it though
Thanks for testing the base model. I really appreciate it. A solid 4 cylinder Turbo car. Good value. I got a lot answered in your review.
Why Alex doesn't have 500k subs is beyond me. Another excellent review and a great complement to the Stinger GT review. Keep up the good work!
neuronbob haha recall stinger paint flakes off haha it's a kia yes it is.
Excellent review in my opinion. One of the best of all that I have seen from many people on various cars.
I didn't think I'd ever consider owning a sport/near luxury/luxury sedan again since Saab pulled out of the market... This is making me rethink that position...
this is definitely an interesting car, great review as always Alex, learned a lot of my filming skills by watching you.
I really like how you compare the stats against others in the class (headroom, legroom). You take all the work away.
Always love your reviews Alex. Hope you purchase a GT in the near future so we can a long term review.
Wow Alex, this review was spot on
What a bargain of a vehicle, those wheels look awesome! Thank you for the wonderful review.
Great review. Thank you sir.
I hope to check this car out this Sunday at the San Auto show.
Not easy to see a review of the base model on youtube. Good job.
Great video, I think I may be sold!!
Wonderful introduction
Alex, best Car rewiewer on Planet..! Nice Intro/Outro music its like oldschool Japanese Tech TV.
First review I've seen of the base model. Thanks! Honestly in the base trim this becomes ALOT less appealing than the GT, but also becomes ALOT more realistic to buy new.
Great review thankyou. KIA are doing some excellent work
Thanks man...they advertise the full equipped STINGER all the time
Great review!
Any way you look it, it's a great looking car. Hats off to our friends in Korea.
Getting one Monday!!!
great job as usual
I'd love the base model with AWD. I am looking forward to seeing comparisons with the other new 5 door sport backs coming this year
Great review
Finally, some1 actually did a review on the 2.0t. The GT is super cool and all. But the entry level deserves it's due.
Great review of an awesome car!
Kia Stinger video = thumbs up before I watch it!
Thanks Alex. Puddle lights are a $240 option.
so happy to see this review. yeahhhh
We were surprised when our trip from Reno to to Sonoma netted 35 MPG going up and over the the high country and back...2020 Stinger 2.0 GT line.! Please eat at The girl and the fig...Best quiche Loraine ever !!!
Just a really nice looking car. Well done KIA!
Awesome review! I am surprised that the base model isn't stripped down. Kia is doing something good! I really consider buying a stinger. Especially that 3.3tt gt/gt1/gt2. Very attractive price and more importantly the overall quality in the car. Performance and LOOKS are 10/10 =D
I enjoyed your Giulia review and am looking forward to your Genesis G70 review cause I'm car shopping
This will be the money maker for KIA! Well done!
Love your review's really considering buying this base model or the sxl turbo optima lemme know when you have the full review so I can compare thank you
Good review. Also, thanks for doing the base model. This car does overlap a few market segments - so I understand there's no real direct competitor.
However, I don't like primarily comparing it to the FWD top-trim midsize cars. The buyers (as evidenced in the comment section) are usually not interested in the benefits of RWD. They want point A >> B, in an efficient, reliable, comfortable, no-drama way. Nothing wrong with that.
However, Kia will definitely cull a few parents who want to trade a (quite a bit) more driving spirit for a tiny bit less of practicality (FE, resale, coupé rear, LT reliability, etc).
IMO, this car is a bit more about doing point A >> C >> B because you can enjoy putting it through some sweepers, and maybe even some twisties (though with some body lean / bounce). All the while, hauling whatever you need in the back.
Great video! I like the fact that you did two of the models. Can you please review the dodge grand caravan? My family is thinking about buying one.
Great review! Looking for a reasonably priced sedan which can compete with my old 268hp RWD 2006 MB E350. It's harder than one might think!
Good review
Great review as always Alex, I’m curious any sense of the highway mpg that the 2.0 T was getting? Thank you
Nice video. Which do you prefer G70 or Stinger? I’m deciding between the two.
including ALL those features but still not AT LEAST led tail lights. im sure front ones would add on a lot of cost, but come on the rear ones seem like a necessity. maybe that feature is a lot more important to me than most consumers...
Corkoth55 i believe it has LED Tail lights. It does not have LED rear turn signals though.
As a single woman I think that is my next car. The liftback makes it practical as an only vehicle, the price is fair, and it would be fun to drive. When I bought my CUV what I really wanted was a small wagon but those are are to find outside of VW.
Christine Roy The new Buick Regal will be available in a liftback and wagon, if you don't mind GM.
The German made Buick ought to have at least as much 'German Quality' as the Mexican built VWs mentioned.
This is on the top of my list for my next car I plan to buy early 2018, but also look at the new Buick TourX. It's similar to the Audi Allroad in concept but starts at $30K.
Nah you need something like Jaguar or Lexus
Ernest Bajic Luxury brands require a rich husband or bf 😀
So would you buy it ??? Love your take on cars. Going to dealer tomorrow. Test drive at this point. Toss up Stinger AWD / Base or Buick Cross X Wagon...
What do you say ???
This thing will be a little beast with bolt ons and a tune
We’ve come along way from the Kia Sophia!
Marc Scordato still have the KIA Rio, KIA just doesn't have a good reputation. The brand itself is crap,.
Sephia*
This is why I like Kia. Great value if you’re not a brand snob. I’m in the market for a fun-to-drive RWD car and was looking at a BMW 320i. Now the stinger is high on my list except I wish it had a manual option. Great value in feature content. Heck, on the BMW Apple CarPlay is an additional $300 option even if you get the navigation system?! Kia is becoming a sleeper brand.
Alex did you notice any trim differences? Kia mentions additional soft touch trim once you get to GT1 trim
What is the sticker on the base model? Great review. I have to drive one now. Thanks.
Thank you😍
This would make for a great daily beater.
I'm surprised that no one is comparing this car to a Nissan Maxima. It seems like as fair a comparison as a loaded Camry or Accord. Anyway it looks like a very cool car. I love fastbacks and can't wait to see the new Buick Regal fastback as well.
The Kia Cadenza competes in the Nissan Maxima's space. Thats why really.
I agree. Seeing the reviewers all compare this car to full on luxury branded models is pretty suspect to me. Even though its RWD its main competitors are still mainly fwd based cars like the TLX and Regal. Though I would also include the Infiniti and Lexus which are rwd.
I disagree, the buyer for this car is not going to cross-shop this against a Maxima, Camry or Accord. In my opinion, they are going after on the new car side one who is looking at something like a Subaru WRX or Mercedes CLA or someone that is otherwise going to buy a used BMW 3 Series or a Mercedes C Class.
I'm actually not a fan of the fast back look but the stinger does look good in gt trim.
Alex probably should have mentioned RWD Dodge Charger with NA Pentastar V6. They are routinely discounted (even the 5.7L V8s).
This car seems to have everything someone could want.
the base should have been dual exhaust instead of quads imho... gives the upper trim (v6 tt) a bit of exclusivity.
Disagree. There's enough distinguishing the base vs V6tt, appearance wise. Plus, I think it's a nice touch, a pat on the back of someone who thought about buying a BMW 3/Merc C-class series and didn't lol.
How about a side by side comparison to the Fusion turbo and the Malibu turbo?
You forgot to mention the good ol' mechanical shift lever on the base model as opposed to the electronic palm rest of the upmodels.
I weirdly prefer the way the base model looks more then gt. It just looks so simple but good.
Thank you for reviewing a basic model thank you thank you very much so much as it did with the top of the line which basically people can't afford so you did a review on on the startup basic model great more car reviewer should do this you talking about 54 or $57,000 totally for the one percenters everyday people can barely afford a $25,000 car
I was going to buy the base model but after this review I'm going to buy the 3.3!! Way too many features missing!!
Great review - KIA has undercut the hair on fire FWD hot hatches, given us a genuine option. V6 chargers are good to look at, but the chassis is getting on a bit.
Absolutely love this car Kia coming clutch with this. Also, for anyone looking to lease, there is word that the base model's monthly payment will be $299 not bad for what you are getting. Now my debate is whether to upgrade to a 2018 Accord Sport or come over to Kia. As long as I can get it in an all black interior.
if this has a timing belt and not a chain, the rear drive engine setup should make belt replacement a piece of cake
How many airbags does the base model has?
Congratulations on that jean.
Alex,
So Accord Sport 2018 2.0 or Kia Stinger 2.0T base model?
My 2012 Optima has 274hp, but this car is so cool looking.
Definitely this car will be a nightmare for other brands.
Definitely not
Samaan AlKhaldi nope, 3 years and it's gone. No matter what you do, it's still a KIA. Should of been a different brand or make a new one for this car.
@@gearsdriveway4902 I agree They should have done what Hyundai did with Genesis. Kia should have been a seperation from KIA a completely different brand. Instead they kept the KIA badge on it, people are stupid all they know are badges. Some people out there with old ass, slow ass, base model bmws and mercedes will probably think they have a better car than a v6 stinger.
@Donovan Campbell I can already see the deprecation now. There's a lot of stingers for sale in Canada around the Toronto area. The Genesis G70 however is hard to find so i'm sure their prices will stay high. But, hey it's for smart buyers. In 3 years a used v6 stinger could be around $30k maybe.
is this a good first car? i get $30k and it has to be AWD, either brand new or certified pre owned with less than 10k miles
Hey Alex, I know that there is a lot of focus on the near luxury with this car but you also talk about the "fun factor" or the driving dynamics of the platform. How would this compare to the VW GTI in the fun factor?
Alex, base Stinger or base Giulia ?
Alex doing great man can you review kia picanto? Ford eco sport if available, Mitsubishi Montero sports. I notice only main stream are review .
Great review as always Alex. This car is such a fantastic bargain but wish it were a little more faster. BMW , MB and Audi models easily do
Yeah but you gotta think about costs, and value. This thing flat out is alot less money than its german counterparts. Expectations should be in-line with its price point.
TheVP just wait until someone puts out an aftermarket tune for the 4 cylinder Stinger. I bet you will see a increase of at least 50hp/50 ft lbs of torque.
Do you have to talk to the Sales Manager in order to borrow the car @ the dealership?
The flat bottom steering wheel would have gone a long way in this car and it would reduce overall parts needed in the assembly and simplify the process too... I see a few steering wheel swaps happening
I would definitely choose the Stinger over the Camry, Accord, Sonata, Optima. But it doesn't beat the value and good looks of the Ford Fusion.
FWIW the 2.0T G70 is also a great car. The stinger is just more practical.
One thing the new Accord has going for it is you can get the high pow engine with a a manual. I still like the stinger better. Wish they would make a wagon version of this. I'm holding out for a CPO V90 in a few years.
S90/V90 is drop dead gorgeous on the road. I wish Swedes were as reliable as Hondas though. The interior and exterior design are Scandinavian bliss.
Downside is that it only comes in Sport trim - which is below EX trim. Not cool. This is a huge downgrade for those who had the EX-L V6 manual versions before. Also, the manual turbo trim is slower than the old V6 because boost is released on the shifts vs continous with the auto, and the less gearing available. For this reason, many current owners of the V6 manual are not going to purchase a future 2.0t manual because they don't want bother a slower car and one with less features.
Fantastic review, Alex. I'm very interested in leasing the Stinger, but I'd like to ask you a question. From time to time, I get back issues. Disc, sciatic issues, etc. How low is this car as compared to other midsized cards, like say the new 2018 Accord/Camry. Those are okay for me, but if this is much lower to get in and out of, I'd have to pass.
I didn't know that they even made a base Kia Stringer.. so I looked for one and found A 2018 base Kia Stringer in Raleigh NC" ..for $25000...If I didn't have my sight set on a Pickup or an SUV" I would give this vehicle a try..
Does it burn regular gas? You are the best Alex.
You skipped the center console? It seems different than the GT. Was curious to see what was missing.
Put a HID kit in the headlights, and it'll be perfect.
alex i am in dilemma between the stinger 3.3 or the alfa romeo giulia 2.0t . Cant really decide which one is more fun to drive or looks better ? You said this is your new favorite car, can i ask what makes the stinger better than the alfa romeo base?
Gti (APR tune) FWD, stinger RWD, wrx AWD
