Just once I wish we would be told how much fuel and cost of equipment and manpower it takes to get each ounce...then a picture of the location before it was mined. Does anyone care about the CO2 released by all the tundra destroyed?...or if the tundra will ever return? I've lived coast to coast in the lower 48 AND all over Alaska from the northern slopes to Shemya. I've never seen any mining operation that ever returned the land to its original environment whether it's in the Smokie mountains, Rockies, or the Sierra Nevada's, but it is always the taxpayers who are left picking up the pieces with the EPA.
To be honest, I do not know how the Environment Agency allows that level of destruction in beautiful wilderness. It would be almost impossible to restore the land.I mined boulder opal in Australia for 40 years, and we were strictly controlled by the Environment Agency: we would never have allowed to do anything like this....and we had to rehabilate the land completely. With all the machinery, I can't imagine anyone making much money...the equipment and fuel would take most of the money.
