Drag. Mid wing is at CG (fwd/aft and up/down) of plane and makes it LESS stable (more maneuverable). The mid wing also has less drag as interaction drag of fuselage and wing root air flow is slightly better. Mid wing structurally is more difficult to design, as spar goes through cockpit at higher location, leaving less room for the pilots comfort.. These being all out single seat aerobatic race planes, comfort is not prime consideration.
