The cinematography of Zack Snyder movies is chock full of amazing shots. Indeed, the signature Zack Snyder style is defined by exquisitely crafted and choreographed images. In this video breakdown, we’re looking at three elements of Zack Snyder’s visual style that work in combination to create such imagery.
Zack Snyder Visual Style - Speed Ramping
Perhaps the most well-known and immediate quality of Zack Snyder’s cinematography is how he uses frame rate. He uses slow-motion like anyone else - to give each moment emphasis and drama. But where he carved out a niche for himself is the use of speed ramping, or changing the frame rate in the middle of a shot. By switching back and forth between fast, normal and slow-motion, Snyder not only creates physics-defying action, it generates a specific rhythm that doesn’t rely so much on editing.
Zack Snyder Visual Style - High Contrast
Then we can talk about the “look” of Zack Snyder’s cinematography. With 300, they developed a complicated recipe for creating the film’s high-contrast look. And it has become a staple of the Zack Snyder style ever since. This begins with low-key lighting - where the subjects are often “backlit” with little-to-no fill light. This essentially makes them silhouettes. Then in post-production, they can “crush” the image even further to make the blacks deeper and the highlights brighter.
Zack Snyder Visual Style - Shallow Depth of Field
Finally, the last piece needed to emulate the cinematography of Zack Snyder is shallow depth of field. Instead of action sequences that allow the entire frame to be in focus, Snyder keeps things more intimate. We’ll see objects like a gun or rain droplets isolated with close-ups in shallow focus. This keeps the action focused, keeps the audience engaged, and also elevates the subjects even higher. All of these techniques in Zack Snyder’s cinematography are designed to create the most epic and aesthetic shots possible.
None of these techniques require a large budget, which should be encouraging for those filmmakers looking to capture something akin to Zack Snyder’s visual style in their own projects.

He's not everybody's cup of tea, but I personally love his films.
true, his films aren't for everyone but you can still learn from it!
Same
Zack Snyder's style is different. not everybody can understand his visual work but after Zack Snyder justice league i love him....
So do I, his cinematography is incredible and the stories he's made with my favorite superheroes are personally perfect.
While he’s not really that good with plots and dialogue, except some rare cases like Watchmen and 300, he’s honestly visually king
Zack Snyder is great VFX teacher for me
I still amazed how films what he did is looks so amazing
Lots of great tips from him!
The reason why I love Zack's work especially comic book, because he gave an epic superhero take with high class visual style. That's not something we can see anywhere these days. My favorite scene of his was the scene from BvS, "Must there be a Superman?" scene. We can see how people refers to Superman as a savior, as a figure of god, but at the same time, we see how conflictive Clark was, how he's being misinterpreted by human being as a god while he's just a kid who's just trying to do the right thing
He's definitely left his mark on the genre 👌
@@StudioBinder Hes not done yet.
People complain about his movies then turn around and call trash like end game the way a superhero movie should be made. Endgame as a movie was absolute garbage loaded with nostalgia and fan fare material. The Russo bros were asked to explain how was Captain America able to lift and control Thor’s hammer. Their answer was very simple, we just thought the fans would think it was cool. Zack respects the material and most critics say he respects it too much. You can’t please everybody but to me Zacks and Nolan’s and now also Todd Phillips comic book based superhero movies are the best in the comic book movie genre. Throw Raimi in there as well cuz I loved the first 2 Spider-Man movies.
@@tonysoto8949 Zack made me love and relate to Superman. And MoS is my favourite DCEU movie and BvS,ZSJL is up there too. But I'm a bit biased to MoS because of Zack's true vision of the film. The other two got severly butchered and the ZSJL was made a non canon filmunless we continue to make it the canon verison). His trilogy on Superman introducing justice league made me realize how impactful and relatable these characters can be. I personally had Raimi spiderman as my favourite Superhero also that I was grown up watching him and marvel. But Man of Steel just took that mantle from me and made Superman my favourite character.
This kind of take, differentiates real fans of Zack than the rest of the M-She U.
Snyder said it once. Movies are visual and visually tells a story.
And my favorite Zack shot is Superman fighting against the world engine in MoS.
He definitely walks the walk!
My favourite fight scene from man of steel is Superman fought 2 Kryptonian. But the best visual he did in that movie is when Clark fell onto ocean
Snyder made a short movie (Snow. Steam. Iron.) with an iPhone and it looks every bit gorgeous as his studio films. He employed all these techniques in the short. Just goes to show how he's a master of the craft
Great example that style doesn't come from the equipment
As a Cinematographer i love Zack Snyder's lens choice and previsualisation on his Imagery, before every film he works on. Hope to learn more from him.
Lots to learn from him!
@@StudioBinder exactly! Filmmaking is an Endless learning process while having fun as well.
@@sahilcinematography4269if the director makes the visual shots then what do you do as a cimenatopgher?
Great video. As someone who feels very inspirted by his work, this was very enlightning. Snyder's aesthetic is one of the many reasons I love his movies. Glad to see a video dedicated to his filmmaking style
His style is definitely distinct!
About time this man starts getting the recognition he deserves. Visually one of the very best in the business
He's a special talent for sure
James Cameron is also good
It's so amazing to see Snyder being recognized as a incredible director as he is 😄😊...!
Can't deny his talent!
Lol
@@StudioBinder he's terrible at story and character development.
@@SuCKeRPunCH187 that's ridiculous.
@@SuCKeRPunCH187 I kinda agree with that. He ruined batman in BvS.
First an analysis of 300, and now Snyder directing style...love to see it. He is one of those directors who has a distinct style like Wes Anderson or David Fincher.
Yup, there's a lot to learn from him!

I'd describe it as visual storytelling within the frame. It's not for everyone, but I personally really like how the shots tell a deeper story than the surface level behind them
One of the most underrated directors of all time
That Flash scene from ZSJL is probably my favorite scene from ZS
That was a great scene!
Really enjoyed the video. Though the only critique I would give is calling Zack's films 'grim, dark, gritty' is a misunderstanding of his work. Those terms are often use by haters to dismiss him. A better word to describe his films would be Mythic since Zack shows an obsession with mythology, religion, and heroics.
I don't think we described his films that way in this video?
@@StudioBinder At 2:33 it is stated that "His films are often grim and gritty" when speaking about the high contrast in his images.
But I must pay you the highest compliments on the video overall. It is not often I see a video on Snyder that gives a great amount of respect to his visual style.
Dawn of the Dead, 300, BVS Ultimate Cut, Man of Steel, Zack Snyder's Justice League, and Watch. Memorable, Extravagant, Irreplaceable.
The best series is back!!!! Waiting for more like this!! Keep making extraordinary videos
More on the way!
300 is still one of my favorite movies of all time... the speed ramping in that was crazy!
Used to great effect!
I was 7 when i watching 300 on my tv still now the visuals of that movie stuck in my eyes. NOW he's my fav director of all-time
Snyder's been killing it for awhile
Thank you guys so much for putting out videos on these great directors! It really helps us when we want to make our short films and videos and is overall just super intresting and fun to watch.
Happy filming!
I love seeing respectable, intelligent analysts taking a serious look at the works of people who are otherwise written off. It's great!
Can't write off someone with that much influence
@@StudioBinder Darn right. Great breakdown video
Just because he's got a talent for crafting beautiful images doesn't mean that he's a good director. Good films are not just pretty images
@@lospolloshermanos6800 True, But if you ask me, good films are not just story and writing to be " cared "
That's just an author's vision.
@@lospolloshermanos6800 and I respectfully disagree that he is NOT a good director.
In India, a filmmaker called as Prashant Neel made a 2 part movie called KGF chapter 1 and KGF chapter 2. He used same style as Zack Snyder. Same camerawork, same low key lighting. It is a thunderous hit here in India.
Love this channel for showing Zack love. He gets a lot of unnecessary hate these days but will always be an exceptional directory
Love him or hate him, you can't deny him!
Anyone, for the last 10-15 years and may be some more to come, who dare to go outside the Marvel formula, silly jokes, bloodless action etc will be criticized for anything. The future will be kind for Zack when they look back, he will be reevaluated for sure!
@@jitd9716 Apparently you just forgot Logan exists, which absolutely did not follow any of the MCU Marvel formula.
@@ryantheanimator1156 Remove the violence and ignore it's the last X-men movie, and it's pretty much a standard Marvel movie.
@@ryantheanimator1156 logan isnt made by marvel studios and isnt part of mcu so it has more freedom from that formula. disney-marvel would never make a movie like logan because well, disney being disney. at best, it would be made for tv but never theaters.
It’s popular to hate on the guy, and as time goes on his films always leave an impression on the industry.
The best directors are divisive.
Rian Johnson is a genius then. Right?
@@WL1264for the most part. The big difference between Johnson and Snyder in their IP work is that Snyder did follow and knew the source material whereas Johnson purposefully refused to even know the material
Love him or hate him, I love him. He is one of my all time favorite directors. No one matches his visual style, his ability to tell a story just on visuals alone, is epic. He is an Auteur, meaning his style is authentic to his directing abilities, so we know it's a snyder film even before we know snyder directed it. His visual style feels grand, largely grand, especially his DCEU films. in short, Snyder is the fuckin' truth. It is what it is baby #RestoreTheSynderVerse
Zack Snyder is now a Myth, Legend and what not !
He's the man!
Great video!
Since I watched 300 in cinemas I knew Snyder would be perfect to adapt more graphic novels and then he did Watchmen and I loved it. One of my favourite movies.
There are too many amazing shots in his filmography. But I think a shot that really blew me away on how gorgeous it looked was the owls flying through the waves in the rain from The Owls of Ga'Hoole. It's one of the very few movies that I've seen that made sense to watch in 3D.
One of his more underrated works!
I still hoping he continue the story.
@@boboboy8189 same.
I really loved his Man of Steel, Batman v Superman Ultimate edition, Snyder Cut. Thank You very much for this Video. In Batman v Superman, every scene is feels connected because of overlapping the dialogue and background sound just before the previous scene ends. That give me feeling of something like experiencing a Poetry something like that. With Beautiful Visuals❤️. Again Thank you very much.
Glad you liked it!
Great catch, I always feel his movies sustain a tremendous sense of rhythm . Its the flow of the movies that I love ! As someone who is very musically minded, I cant help but love what he does !
I agree. For me I really thought the four hour long Zack Snyder's Justice League movie went by a lot faster than many shorter movies I've seen just because of it's visuals.
@@puichiung2959 The Batman, for example.
Thanks for the video !! Zack is a genius ❤
My favorite Zack film is BVS
Mine Toooooooo
💯👍
I love that movie!!
My favorite Zack's movies is how you guys made it and tell the story every f* time. Perfect every time.
💯
Zack Snyder does it differently, I don't get how but he does. Great breakdown!
These are three of his ways!
Glad to see a youtube channel about actual filmmaking put respect on Zack Snyder's name. One of my favorite shots is Dr. Manhattan in final form in the cafeteria. After Watchmen I never looked at comic book movies the same.
it was a great film!
Aesthetically, his shots look so good. I love how boldly he presents all his frames
Definitely not a timid filmmaker 🔥
I would love to see the Post Apocalyptic world depicted in Justice League as a full movie. Hope they make a next part for the Justice League.
That would be a lot of fun!
His movies look like a Mytholohy Painting, I love it honestly
One of the few auteur blockbuster directors. No mattter what you think of him his influence on modern filmmaking is unquestionable.
He's popular for a reason!
Zack Snyder is my inspiration in my photography.
Interesting choice!
@@StudioBinder thanks
And also THE MUSIC!
There were some great tracks!
Love all his movies, as an artist he has been a huge inspiration to me in how to approach horror and action.
I almost like every shot he create in his films, because I just love his shooting style. It's hard for me to find someone else who have the same shooting style. God, I love this director so much!
Lots to learn from
That's why James Cameron called him as visual storyteller. Even the movie has bad writing, he still can do great visual.
Love this! Sending this to Zack now so he sees it
We appreciate it :)
A genius director with superb visual imagery
Lots to learn from him

I love that this channel only take the best part out of the movie and carefully explained it in detail, like seriously I mean that. They really encourage people to take the best and improve upon it whether it's writing, filming or maybe some other stuffs too.
I've been waiting for this video for a long time. Thank you make it happen ☺️✌️
Hope it was worth the wait!
It's great to see some of his films like 'Watchmen' and "legend of the Guardians' that felt visually ahead of their time when released.
Seriously well made video, editing is really good, good narrating too.
Literally just finished watching 300 for the millionth time a few minutes ago.
It's very rewatchable
The shallow dof sure mixes things up.
Funny how studiobinder beeped the outro.
Have to 🤷♂️
I love his films.
He made remember Superman was my favorite superhero since I was a kid watching Bruce Timm's "Superman-The Animated Series" every afternoon after school with "Man Of Steel", after "Superman Returns" made me learn to hate the character so much I actually forgot that aspect of my childhood.
It was a painful 8 years he freed me from. I'll be forever thankful for that.
I adore the fact he understands comics so well, down to the emulation of comicbook ink with the lighting mentioned in this essay.
#RestoreTheSnyderverse
I love that Zack Snyder is finally getting the respect he deserves. He's my favorite director working today that he is so far ahead of his time. When we look back on his career in 20 years people will be saying he completely changed what Comic book movies could be. From 300 to Zack Snyder's Justice League each movie has it's own feel and style. His style is very distinct and his action scenes are some of the most visually striking. The BVS wearhouse scene is the best Batman action scene ever put to film.
I'm a very big fan of Zack Snyder and some of his films because there's a few of action packed blockbusters like 300, Watchmen, Sucker Punch, Man of Steel and many others. So yeah I'm liking them a lot.
Zack Snyder, Guy Ritchie and Mathew Vaughn make films like a High End Oil Painting and I love it and great stylized action
Nobody does it like Snyder, such an amazing visionary. Loved this video, it was great, thanks so much!

It's a dream to see style breakdown of "Rajkumar hirani" sir on studiobinder ,
Love your content....!!
Thanks for the suggestion!
For me the Watchmen-style deconstruction of BvS, plus layering of Joseph Campbell themes, plus his astounding unique visual style was sublime. BvS is my favorite film of all time-and I’ve seen a lot of films of all types over the years, so I don’t say that lightly. Although I guess I would just add that the most important reasons why a film strikes a deep chord are ultimately extremely personal.
Wow another great Monday
Always!
Love this channel
Cheers!
Superb video 🤩
Great to hear!
I feel like I finally have the words to explain the film making technique of Snyder that allows him to create the most jaw dropping visuals in the history of comic book films! He's one of the few that seems to understand proper contrast and coloring. Of coarse I gotta knock the competition (the MCU) because their movies are the visually blandest thing going on. A video exploring The Batman's cinematography made a great point that modern blockbusters seem to want the images to be as clean as possible, almost plastic-y in nature. There's no dirtying up the frame. Low key lighting, great contrast, proper coloring, altering depth of focus, changing frame rates in the same shot.....none of these things are employed by MCU film makers. They almost seem to just want to get the necessary shot on camera without wanting to do anything to make it artful, comparitively speaking. Sad to see really, as I'm learning more and more about what can be done to make a shot more artful.
I guess if I had to list some of my favorite Snyder shots:
1. Jor El coming out of the tunnel to see Kryptonian ships exploding
2. Superman's double punch on Zod
3. Birds eye view of Bruce driving through destroyed Metropolis while scout ship flies overhead
4. Basically all the shots of the Waynes's deaths
5. Superman saving people montage
6. Superman looking on as Doomsday is about to go off again
7. Superman/Doomsday beam clash that WandaVision later copied
8. Arthur having wave splashing on his face on the dock
9. Victor jumping over opposing player on football field
10. The whole flashback invasion in JL
11. Superman eyeing Barry down at the statue during JL v Superman fight
12. Black suit Superman doing Christ pose in atmosphere with sun in front of him
13. Batmobile turning left and parademon hitting it's side to almost flip it over in slow motion
14. Flash's finale run
15. Barry saving Iris
16. In BvS, Knightmare Batman looking out over land to see Omega symbol, plus whole scene!
17. Aquaman throwing trident at parademon
18. Darkseid, Desaad, and Granny walking down long hallway
Along with numerous shots in Watchmen and 300.
Now that I know how to put it in words, I wish he wouldn't have gone for such a tight and narrow window for focus depth on Army of the Dead. That's what I didn't like visually about the film. It was almost like what he did on some previous films, but this time on steroids. I commend him for doing something technically difficult, though.
I'm sorry, I can't stand any of the filmmaking in the MCU; tv at the movies nonsense.
@@21stcenturyhiphop All their films since TFA (being the first one shot digitally) have the same overall look. Stans will say that it's meant to visually connect the films, but why'd they have to look so bland? There is proof that Disney/Marvel know how to make stylistic choices. I was dumbfounded and pleasantly surprised by the cinematic look and the general visuals of Valkyrie's flashback with Hela. It then pissed me off, knowing that they knew how to be creative and have style and only chose to make that one scene look amazing when the whole film should've looked like that! Their indoor shots, especially during conversations are so blandly lit and grayed out, it really does look as Patrick H. Willems called it years ago, "muddy concrete". And it got far worse starting with CW onward. Seeing the evidence of the plot points, camera shots, and entire sequences that the MCU has pulled from previously released DCEU films, I wouldn't be surprised if they were trying to copy Snyder's visual style. But, based on what we've gotten, maybe someone ought to make a video titled, "MCU Lighting and Coloring: How to Fail at Snyder's DCEU". lol
@@kevrulz06 Yeah, I pointed out to some folks how the MCU filmmakers have been blantently copying Snyder's superhero films/asthetic, but no one will acknowledge it because of the reputation of the MCU vs. the DCEU films(which are way more interesting, btw). This isn't some hipster stance by me; I've hated the Marvel films since Iron Man 2. Downey Jr. is fantastic, though.
@@21stcenturyhiphop Well, we're in agreement. I 100% know what you mean when you say no one will hear you. I can't tell you how many times I've freely offered people the evidence that DC's movies are far better made than Marvel's and they just reply with, "I don't need to see YOUR evidence". Or, they refuse to see the evidence and write it off because they think a certain way about the source, like Film Gob. It only matters whether the evidence is true or not. But, the reputation of the more beloved franchise is hard to overcome with people.
He’s a damn good filmmaker. You know you’ve contributed something true to the artform if people bristle at the mere mention of your name
Great video! Zack's eye for visual compositions and visual story telling is definitely enhanced by and because of his studies in art. The man literally knows how to beautifully shoot and draw his thoughts and ideas in killful detail. Add his raw and metal style and his fascination with mythology and greater-than-life characters/ stories. Zack is incredible.
His writing is ambitious and hefty but he does make some controversial choices. I.E: Army of The Dead, the last act is dissapointing in that he services a character and story that is not likeable.
He's made some great work!
Snyder love to take a risked in every movie he directed. There's an interview asked him about his directing philosophy and he said he give everything he can and refuse to do what others are doing. This is how he create his own identity unlike most of Hollywood director who heavily relied on director of photography
