  • This week I pick my all time greatest Springbok team. It was quite difficult to do this video as it is almost impossible to compare players from the amateur era with players from the modern era. This video should actually be called my favourite Springbok team of all time!

I would have loved to see a greatest ever team made up of players from the amateur era before 1995 and another fantasy team made up of Boks post 1995 from when the professional era started. Very difficult to compare players across both eras when their competitors were also so different.

Thanks for compiling this incredible hypothetical dream team of the greatest Springboks ever to grace a rugby field. We are around the same age, and you jogged my memory with a few childhood heroes of mine, who in retrospect would be at least the equal of any modern era player. I therefore have to agree with your dream fifteen, we can only imagine how wonderful it would be to see all fifteen in the same team. Thanks for the memories!

Not a fair conparison Mitch. I've read a hell of a lot of books and over the years formed an opinion on players based on what other people like Doc Craven thought of them as well. I'm not necessarily just looking at playing ability, but also on a player's "status" in Springbok circles. Guys like Bob Loubser and Japie Krige's careers are well documented and they deserve a mention. Does it matter? No it doesn't...

@@RealRugby Your knowledge of Bok history is awesome, thank you for the videos.
I think it does matter, selecting a player based on a match report or on stories shared with a tint of nostalgia by his mate, is very different to watching a player go through good and bad days.
Take Percy, I watched that guy debut as a centre then play fullback and become a utility back. Then he left the country to almost a tone of mockery, only to come back and stake his claim as an ultimate fullback. And an incredible match winning kicker.
I just think witnessing greatness is worth more than hearing back in my day stories.
Again thank you for the videos much respect to you and the channel

What I appreciate is the recognotion of the palyers from yesteryear, who are always not considered because the pundits were only watching the game from recent times.
Most of the players from previous eras did not play plenty of tests, although they were around for a long time in years. This is illustrated in the reasoning behind Habana vs HO for instance.
I am putting my team forward taking their international tests and their achievements into consideration(in these eras).
Take note prior to the RWC, All Blacks and Lions tours were considered the holy grail. Because of rugby being a team game, combinations were important in my consideration:
    15. Heunis - great goalkicker, tactician, most versatile, speed, and a great defender as tackler, and the aerial ball. When he came into the line the opposotion had problems.Ultimate team man.
    11. Carel du Plessis - poetry in motion. Had the ability to sense the opportunities. He created as many tries as he scored. Good defender as well.
    12. Joggie Jansen - made the tackle that was heard around the world, whenbhe destroyed Cottrell in 1970. Absolute great defender and great distributor of the ball. Instrumental in '70 series win against NZ after '69/'70 debacle in Europe.
    13. Gerber - Probably the best centre that ever played the game. Overshadowed Sella in '86 at Twickenham, made the Irish tackle themselves, made the English look like an u 16 team in 84, created havoc against the Cavaliers, the best backline player on the field with re-admission against the All Blacks at 34!
    14. Kolbe - Like Mordt not very tall, but superfit, immensly powerful and fast. The ultimate athlete. Great defender as well. Can score from no hope positions
    10. Naas Botha - game changer! All opposition feared him - the Lions in 1980, NZ in '81, '86 and 1992 and every team in between. Great tactician and decision maker.
    9. Joost - Big and powerful. Opportunist like no other 9 ever. Great defender. He had no let up.
    8. Hennie Muller - Revered around the world from Murrayfield in the North to NZ in the South. Was not called "Windhond" for nothing. Revolutionised 8th man play.
    7. Theuns Stofberg - interplay between forwards and backs was unparralelled. Fast for a big man and unstoppable in contact. Forward with the closest thing to "flair"
    6. Rueben Kruger. Few flankers could equal him on the ground, could lo what was required and much more. Unsung hero - Like Heunis the ultimate team man.
    5. Matfield - best line out forward at four in the "lifting" era. Could run, dummy, chip kick and put grubbers through - very little he could not do.
    4. Frik du Preez - the original enforcer - kept Mcbride, Meads and the other would be tough guys in his era in check. Danie Craven was of the opinion a side was not supposed to lose with him there. All time great. Was the precurser to Matfield, regarding running and the other skills, but he could drop and place kick at goal too!
    3. Hannes Marais - a real strong man. You did not play 33 tests in his era without reason. Those were the days of hard forwards. The anchor.
    2. Marx - Great scrummager. Is a dynamo in rucks and mauls. Can run well with the ball and his line out throws is spot on. Hard no nonsense attitude.
    1. Os du Randt - his name often comes up when a "greatest" team selection is discussed. Whether it be all time, Springbok, RWC dream team, whatever, his name is there. He is revered world wide.
Except for Jansen and Kolbe the backline consists mainly of the most potent Springbok (1980's)
bacline ever. All at some stage payed with Botha, except the mentioned 2. Joost played a couple Northerns games with him. Consists of speed, defence , gamebreakers and versatility.
Typical SA pack - Could even by todays Springbok standards dominate, play wide and defend

His boot did do the talking, but no one could send a back line away like Naas, and he was always there ready to receive the pass. Left foot, right foot, Highveld or coast, rain or sunshine.. he could boot it over from everywhere. A match winner in the Shane Warne mould. With the rugby the Springboks play today, Naas would’ve been the first to a 1000 international points. Even if he started at the same time as Carter, he would’ve gotten there first, and would still hold the record for most points scored. Naas’a job wasn’t to tackle… His job was to Win

To me every man has his own idea about who the best is and it is extremely difficult to pick, especially across decades and changed rules as well as amateur vs semi professional to professional. Skills changed and so did the way the game was played.
Out of the team, I see five people only who I suspect would feature in most peoples' top 15. To me these 5 would not be debateable.
    1. Os du Randt - never been and still have not seen any loosehead in the world with the work rate of Os at his best.
    2. Jan Ellis - the super fit Springbok with the incredibly big hand and lost of pace to burn.
    3. Hennie Muller - Fast, agile and intelligent. A player that had the rugby brains look at the rule book to try counter his ability to destroy backlines on defence.
    4. Naas Botha - the biggest rugby general we ever saw in Springbok rugby. His ability to read the game was immense and he could not be rattled.
    5. Danie Gerber - Need I say anymore about Danie. Perfect centre n attack with an eye for a gap and a swerve that left you for dead....every time!
The rest of the team is totally debateable, even the position of a legend like Frik du Preez, whom I personally would not pick in an all-time bok team :)

Thanks Hansie. You are right, its always debatable and very subjective. It also depends on who you support, for instance Northern Transvaler tend not to like someone like Morne du Plessis and WP supporters hated Naas. Topics like this should actually be "what is my favourite team" because there will never be consensus. Everyone in SA think they are a rugby expert (me included). At the end of the day everyone has their own opinion and I'm happy if people debate me, its just a bit of fun. Thanks for the feedback!

This list is pretty much spot on, which is commendable given how much legendary talent we've been blessed with in SA. But Uli Schmidt ahead of all those other hookers? I think not. Yes, a fantastic rugby player - almost revolutionary in the way he approached the game - but not the complete package, particularly in the scrums compared to some of the guys you left out. Hell, John Smit's game was similar to Uli's, except he also happened to be stronger in the scrums and then there's the small matter of captaining the Boks in 83 of his 111 Tests (and snapping up a World Cup trophy to boot).
It's hard for me to comment on anyone prior to the late 70s, but if you're looking from then on, I think it's just about impossible to find a better hooker than Bismarck du Plessis. At his peak - a period of about 5-6 years - he was not just the best hooker in the world but possibly the best forward on the planet. At that time, Bismarck really was the complete hooker: better than anyone else in the tight loose, absolutely dynamic in loose/broken play (including being one of the best support runners I've ever seen), near perfect on defense, the best lineout thrower in the world, and possibly among the 3 best scrummaging hookers of the professional era (at Test level, at least). Probably the strongest man on the field whenever he stepped on it, yet had a tremendous (and often underrated) rugby brain which allowed him to read the game and make game-changing plays or reorganize his own teammates on the fly almost as a matter of habit. During his time in a Bok jersey, the All Blacks respected many of our guys, but if you asked them (in secret and anonymously, of course) who they actually feared, it would be Bismarck, hands down.
And I say all that despite the fact that I actually strongly dislike Bismarck. But I don't have to like him to recognize his brilliance.

Those 3 players read the game from the back of their palm. Maybe I am biased and support the Sharks.... But I do believe they were greatest in their positions..... Great team - no doubt!! No issues with HO Habana and Mordt; Gerber one of the greatest players of all time. Roux was great but looking at a pure 12 Joggie Jansen deserves a mention. He and Ryk Van Schoor took tackling to another level! I would play De Villiers there, great #12, and astute leadership. At 10 Naas had no peer but I do believe given time Pollard may challenge him. But Naas is still King! SH imagine a team with Joost starting and Fourie coming off the bench!! Loose forwards I do have an issue I do think Krige was great but IMO Greying, Schalk, Rob Louw were better. BUT give Steph Du Toit a few more years he will be revered like Ells, and I would have him in the starting XV! Locks no issue. At Tight head if we are talking straight strength the strongest man to ever play for the Boks was Anndy MacDonald - the man killed a lion with his bare hands!! but for me, Chris Koch was the ultimate prop with Os Du Randt. Hooker now here is a real contentious one who was better? Uli or Bismarck? Great players no doubt Smit was a great hooker but also a great leader. Having said this though had Uli's career been after isolation he would be the best. So agree with this choice. Fascinating! But we are in the modern game so let's look at a bench: 5/3 split - Frans Steyn Handre Pollard Fourie Du Preez John Schalk Burger Piet Du Toit Beast Bakkies and Vermuelin. Now there's a bench!!

I'm British and people tend to pick modern players in their top ten understandably so , but that doesn't mean they are right, there have been remarkable players in the past but in some cases they were in poor teams not least some of the English teams of the Amateur era and some of the long forgotten talent from the Pacific Islands .

Makes for good listening and healthy debate. Danie's not either a defensive centre, his attacking abilities are unquestioned so I'd put Jaques Fourie in at 12 to counteract this. If you're playing in the 70's and 80's Naas is your go to flyhalf, anything after that Henri Honiball. The 2 greatest SA all round game flyhalves imo, Henry and Handré Pollard. One cannot pick an all time greatest SA XV without No.6 Schalk Burger, he just took open side flank and general play to another level....sorry Jan Ellis. If you're going to have bacon, you must have eggs. Therefore Bakkies comes in at No.4 in place of Frik du Preez (a SA sentimental favourite). A team needs a specialist enforcer aka Bakkies Botha. Also a lock a 6.2 inches doesn't work for me. Bismark over Uli anyday. Bismarck was simply in a class of his own the world over in his position as well as an enforcer. Uli was great, but Bismark was better. At No.3 H. Koch or Hempies du Toit at tighthead for me. They refused to go back. Hempies had that harregat attitude !!

Cannot really fault you with your selection. Just a few points though. If back then defensive flyhalves were not the order of play, Henry Honiball should feature right up there as a flyhalf changing the typical style of flyhalf play. Secondly, give us the Northern Transvaal try scoring statistics with Johan Heunis at flyhalf compared to that of Naas Botha. Should make interesting reading. Then Uli (Boelie) Schmidt at hooker is an emotional choice for you. You also did not appoint your captain in the selected squad.

    • @RealRugby
      @RealRugby  3 роки тому +1

Thanks for the feedback Christo. At the end of the day, its my opinion and everyone will have a different point of view. Honiball was a great player and he attacked the gain line very differently than flyhalves before him, but he wasn't a general that could dictate the flow of the game. I also wouldn't back him to get points on the board in a tight game. I think Naas's strengths makes up for his lack of defense. On Uli - I don't think it was an emotional choice at all, for me he was the best hooker that ever played for the Springboks. If it wasn't for isolation and amateurism, he could have played 80+ tests. Very strong for a small guy and one of the fittest players on the park. I loved watching him play. If I had to pick a captain from this lot, it would be Naas. He was a strategic genius and he knew how to lead his teams. Team mates didn't always like him, but they reacted to him and he didn't really tolerate failure. I thought he was a good captain.
