The reason why so many cities were built on swamps is quite simple. Before humans started to turn rivers into straight lines, they were meandering all over the place, thus the riverbanks were naturally all swampy and muddy and everything. Yet rivers were extremely important for transportation of goods of all kinds, so it was natural to build a city near or directly at a river. Only with the city-building did people then drain the swamps. The picture we have of rivers and their surroundings having a clear cut between water and dry land is not a river's natural form.
Well, there were some cases a bit different like the Mexicas who built a city literally in the middle of a freaking lake when building Tenochtitlan, so that was one case of people turning a lacuifer bed into a swamp rather than a swamp into something else but yeah and naturally by growing outside of the lake delimitations they also ended up building right into the swampy areas, but that was the post-colonial European and natives to be fair. In fact the Spanish did the opposite of what should have been done: drain the lake and redirect the streams, which delibilitated the ground immensely.
But it's quite interesting, the fact that "roads" were literally man-made canals, rivers and streams in the middle of the city-lake, and going in-between collosal structures like huge pyramids and temples perfectly hold atop of the lake, no wonder the Europeans were so amazed by their engineering.
That was also hundreds of years before the Dutch started constructing over water and gaining land from the sea and lakes.

Guyanese here, the map is like that because both Venezuela and Suriname claims our land and Google is portraying the map showing everyone’s claim. As you know Venezuela is claiming about 80% of Guyana or out Essesquibo region and Suriname is claiming the Tigri triangle.

Specifically the flood on September ~7 1147 at Selymbria, Byzantine climatic experts allowed the German contingent to make camp on a flood plain, during flood season. Then, shockingly, there was a flash flood that decimated Conrad III of Germany’s force, its supplies, and morale. Such events greatly contributed to the Second Crusade failing.
