    It has been the subject of much conjecture over the years. I'm leaning towards the 'Guinea Pig' theory.

    Maiden years I spent a-yearning,
    Wistful days I went a-waiting
    For a mate all main and mighty
    Man of means for shield and safety.
    But my father would not hear me,
    Nor my mother would allow me
    Such a man all main and mighty
    Man of means for shield and safety.
    Mate and spouse my elders gave me,
    Shipped across the sea to wed me,
    Great in growth and manly likeness,
    Lacks the wits of man and sharpness.
    Head he had but wits were taken,
    Off his brow the brain was shaken.

    There's a fantastic remix somewhere ... maybe Tribal Drift? ... heard it years ago on a compilation of 'world music' ... anybody know?

    @mark1991ization De nada ;) And yes - I'm a Finn myself.

    @mark1991ization This is a bit late - but as a Finn I can confirm that the translation provided by ralphyboy25 is quite good.
    The Finnish lyrics contains much nonsense fill words (typical feature for this kind of music trad), but the intermingled 'story' is presented accurately in the translation.

    @ralphyboy25 Now that I have the CD:s I don't visit these YT songs too often so this comes a bit late - anyways IMO the English translation here is quite good.

    Guys have you ever notice this sounds like the girl from Loituma / Ievan Polkka? Trivia: The 2 lead singers came from Hedningarna.

    • @ralphyboy25
      @ralphyboy25 10 років тому +2

      Close...very close....but not quite.
      The singers on this (Kaksi) album are: Sanna Kurki-Suonio and Tellu Paulasto
      The singers on Loituma's Ievan Polkka are: Sari Kauranen, Hanni-Mari Autere and Anita Lehtola-Tollin.
      Sanna Kurki-Suonio and Tellu Paulasto were members of Loituma in its early formative days, but left the group prior to the Ievan Polkka (Things of Beauty album) release.
      Intertwined and interwoven as these two groups were, a few years later Anita Lehtola-Tollin joined Sanna Kurki-Suonio in Hedningarna, where they sang together on the "Karelia Visa" album......... which in my opinion represented the Golden Age of Hedningarna's timeline.

    @mark1991ization Hello, I have 2 posts from 1 month ago listed below (one in Finnish, one in English). I came across the English translation on the web at lyrics . wikia. com . As I do not speak Finnish, I cannot vouch for its accuracy. However, perhaps if one of my Finnish speaking friends are reading this, maybe they can let us know if the English lyrics below are reasonably accurate. =-)
    The song is basically about a woman who got something less than what she hoped for in a husband.

    @mark1991ization Hi - I did somehow miss your request when you placed it, I just happened to wander to this vid and noticed it only now.
    Anyways the English translation provided by 'ralphyboy25' is very good. You should find it in the earlier comments for this vid right here. In my browser at least it is about 9 comments backwards from this - starts "Maiden years I ...".

    Try to get this "Kalina moya" and "Malina moya" is russian "Калина моя, малина моя" or there iare such words in suomi?

      This song hails from Karelia which has long cultural connections with neighbouring Russian peoples.
      The Russian words here are used as 'nonsense' singing words between the 'real' lyrics. These songs were most often sung without instruments so you have to sing something to proceed the melody over the gaps of the lyrics.
      But why use the Russian loans instead of going like 'lalallaa' or something like that? I don't know, maybe the Russian words just sounded 'cool' and/or they were part of the the lyrics of some related 'Russian' songs these people did know of ...

      Eneri Giilaan Honestly, despite all the political strife, the cultures are similar. Finns were probably giving a nod to their Russian neighbors (as you said).
