  • Moe Saha does away with the notion that mental illness is somehow not a legitimate illness in her talk. She uses her background in the genetic sciences to back up her argument, and make the case for potential new treatments.
Tamoha Saha is a student at Los Altos High School with unusual passions for both genetics and mental health. She has performed lots of personal research on the subjects.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Brava Moe Saha, you explained in simple terms the basis of epigenetics and mental illness. It is fascinating how there may be a predisposition for mental illness due to an individual's DNA. Thank you for taking the time to do your TEDx Talks presentation. Kepp up the good work.

It’s genetic. Mental illness can be genetic. But it’s also learned and taught. If someone is young and witnessed a murder they can develop PTSD while another child can go through the same thing and not. That could be many factors .

I believe that to be the case, although I do not believe in the theory that it is the result of a chemical imbalance that requires medication at least when it comes to illnesses such as we see with anxiety. I really tend to think it is a learned behavior, possibly the result of a traumatic childhood and I think these people who reach for a pill are doing themselves a terrible disservice for which they will never overcome.

    • @lawrencemunroe6798

As for the more major disorders, I really can't comment but it must have something to do with faulty wiring and maybe for these people medication has the benefits that outweigh the risks. When I hear about people taking major tranquilizers to deal with their anxiety, I think oh you poor soul, good luck with that.

I will agree with the confusion in the previous comments. I see very little structure in the talk. When discussing epigentetics she could of elaborated more on stress factors in epigenetic influences on mental health.

Does indulging in activities that gives u happiness hormones take u a lil away from depression? I really want to know if there is any healthy person who workouts daily and eats healthy gets depressed too.
When my daily schedule is messed up and i eat too much and dont do any form of body movement i get few symptoms of depression. Will it be worst if i keep living this lifestyle?

The presenter is sweet, book smart and likable. The information however is not accurate. Mental illness is not easily treatable and medication has proven to have WORSE outcomes than non-medicated patients in the LONG run. Anatomy of an epidemic is eye opening. Highly recommend it.

It’s both hereditary environmental, and based on experience.Your epigenes that are from your parents and ancestors experiences and choices basically load the gun and make you more susceptible or not. Your own epigenes may be tuned on for mental illness which you will be more likely to develop but the thing about epigenes is that you can change then by the choices you make in your life such as therapy, good relationships, taking care of your health. If you make the change then your future children will likely not get that epigene

no, there have been cases of twins who are separated at birth and despite different living environments the likely hood of the other twin developing mental illness is significantly higher if the other twin does. It has been proven to be environmental factors interacting with genetic predisposition which together contribute to multifactoral causation.
