So true, such a great album. And what an intro: Rock and Roll Damnation --> Down Payment Blues ---> Gimme a Bullet, incredible songs, massively underrated
Great riff, thanks for the breakdown. In my eyes, "Ride On" is the most underrated AC/DC song, as a whole - maybe classic rock song ever, even. Cheers!
Never attempted to learning it until a GIRL asked me to teach it to her. Great song! One had better tap their foot to stay in time. It's slow, and timing is key.
"Squealer" takes the cake in my opinion.. Angus went WILD on that song. Best and most underrated classic rock song ever. "Ride On" is very calm and melancholic as well though.
First album I heard was Powerage. My uncle cued up Down Payment Blues and I was hooked. I often use this riff as a warm up because it incorporates more than one technique. Your spot on with the upward picked note.
Angus and Malcom are responsible for some of the greatest riffs of all time. Riff Raff, Dirty Deeds, TNT, Whole Lotta Rosie, Long Way to the Top, Jailbreak, the list just goes on.
My favourite riff of all time, always been…was inspired by the fleetwood Mac “Oh well” riff. Absolute classic! That opening upstroke is interesting indeed…don’t know if I’ll be able to ‘unlearn’ the way I’ve always played it…
Had tix for AC/DC given to me for X-mas. They announced after tickets were out that Axl was taking the lead vocals. I was skeptical having heard some of his more recent live performances in what was that current line-up of GnR (no Slash, no Duff). From the opening track they (Axl included) killed it. They had a good dosage of the Bon Scott era (Rock and Roll Damnation, Hell Ain’t a Bad Place to Be, Live Wire, Sin City, Rosie..to name a few). Riff Raff in the encore between Hells Bells and For Those About to Rock. I wasn’t able to see Brian Johnson (or Malcom) but that was a straight up ass kicking rock and roll show full of killer AC/DC riffage. 🤘🏼
Landslide off of Flick of the switch is the most underrated song and riff in their entire catalogue , they go flat out from the start and a killer solo too .
I want to know how to clean up my technique/phrasing/picking. You are knocking it out of the park with these explanations, and I'm planning to sign up for the course.
I’ve been an AC/DC fan since I was 15 in 1990. And that is probably one of the only very few guitar riffs I don’t think I have tried to play. It is absolutely excellent and I am playing it now following your lesson thank you
As a Blueser I always loved this song. They never play(ed) it live ever since. Very close to Oh Well from Peter Green but the flat 5th note (Bb) does the trick here. I never played it really round. So the correct picking seems to me like an eye opener. Thanks!
Great video!! One of my favourite AC/DC riffs, tricky to get under the fingers at first but once nailed it's a fun riff to play! Thanks for showing some love to underrated AC/DC tunes
Perfect riff to pick. Robert, I'd LOVE to hear you cover the opening Jimmy Page lick for the solo on I'm gonna crawl. Just the first part of it, you know before he goes off. That walk up then those Pagey pulloffs, I so enjoy trying to attempt the beginning of the solo. Just for fun.
I’m going to buy your Angus young course. I’ve been playing since 1990. And not too bad , but I have a full time job so haven’t got time to work this out for myself , even though I could with time. But I don’t have time on my hands anymore , so I’ll buy it. I’m fed up with trying to play like eric Johnson ,I could play cliffs of Dover pretty well at one point with a mixture of alternate picking and economy up to speed and clean but it takes practice every day to keep that level up , and I can’t keep it up due to lack of time in my life. .. I’m not having fun on guitar anymore . But AC DC when I was playing it at 15 years old I had fun and that’s what guitar should be , fun !
I'd say Can I Sit Next To You Girl has got some great and underrated riffs and is generally an underrated song despite being one of my favourites when I used to listen to a ton of AC/DC back in middle school/first years of high school Nice video and great riff choice, that song rules!
I was actually trying this riff earlier last week, it's deceptively tricky 😆 Excited to learn with the course! If I could choose anything for you to look at, I'd like to see Shot In The Dark or Realize solo. Angus is doing more sort of chordal solos in these songs.
You make this s**t look so easy, dude. Lol. Great choice, the Bon era is full of super bluesy treats that are hard to beat. And sometimes hard to play. Rock on!
Back in Black was written on some feeds 5 months before Bons death RIP BON And Malcome, Brian Johnson being new I read didn't say anything till now Source , some where in Black* The album was composed by Johnson, Angus and Malcolm Young, and recorded over seven weeks in the Bahamas from April to May 1980 with producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange, who had worked on their previous album Highway to Hell Either way , No one replaces Bon,not Brian ,Brian was definitely the best guy to replace probably one of the best Rock n Roll performers since Lemmy and Ozzy , Brian not a lot realise was watched in the band he was in by Bon , or is it Iron Weedy Chinese ot Thai stick rumour pmsl Great vid as always man , I'd love hear you doing a full on Cowboys from Hell ,it was f...kin incredible RIP Dime As for Iron LA Cheese , sorry,Maiden , what happened to Sex, drugs ,n Rock n Roll ! Personally ,who think he made a twat outta himself than the poor Barstool who's waited ages and maybe followed them since DiAnno left ? I think deffo , Get a CV in for American Airliners Bruce ,you kin hypocrite
Opening with a downpick is also counter to the rhythm, which is, to use a fancy word, iambic. Or to put it another way, if you only play the second beats, you get the melody. If you only play the first beats, you get the harmony or the root note. That's a big clue that you start on the up pick.
Dude I love this video, I'm a HUUUGGGGEEE ACDC fan, I think you should talk about some songs from powerage or Flick of the switch those albums are so underated.
I've been playing AC/DC's Beatin around the bush since high school in the early 80's. I know the whole song and love stumping so called,AC/DC players when I whip it out. Cracks me up.
Beating around the bush is my favorite riff and the next is touch too much. I love all the songs they've done I'm more interested in the Bon Scott era. Whole lotta Rosie 😂
If you break this riff down as 16th notes using the "one-e-and-a-two-e-and -a..." formula, it makes sense for the first note to be an up stroke because the first note is on the "-e-" beat (coincidentally the e note as well) which is an off beat. Specifically it starts on the "-e-" part of "four-e-and-a" and the fourth note of the riff lands on the first note of a bar, which is a down beat.
So... I say to myself I'm not learning any more songs... gonna fine tune the ones I know already. Then you go a put another awesome tutorial up for another awesome track, and off I go again! Honestly tho, love your lessons, always clear and easy to follow, and I love this song. Might be a while before i get up to speed tho lol. Thanks for the video... always appreciated
My band, Brickbat, played ALL original tunes, with two exceptions: Night Prowler, and Sin City. It was my two favorite parts of our set. Hail Angus and Malcomb Young!!!
yep. agreed. it’s the one that took me the longest to master. i don’t think it can be talked about without mentioning Oh Well by Fleetwood Mac. great to see someone rose with they love for it. 🤘🏻🖤🤘🏻
This is what i usually paly to get all warmed up...i know if i get it thumping and bouncing me hands are in sinc and it sounds soo damn good when the amp is snarling..Powerage right into Highway to Hell. Whatever they were tapped into was magical
-) I learned the intro to the Big Gun song. And I myself, without tabs and other clues, only spied two notes there in the tablature. Just hands somehow played, and away we go. -) So it goes!
ROBERT, Try to make a video lesson about the 70's and early 80s AC/DC tunings of each song that is NOT at A440, because I'm curious to know which songs are NOT at A440. Also EVH van halen songs weren't at A440 also which you can make a video lesson about to know which songs aren't at A440
💥💥💥 I blame what is called "classic Rock" radio for burning us out on back in black and You shook me All night Long.... There's so many killer AC/DC songs from so many albums and beating around the bush is one of them. I think the people running these stations have no idea about things, they just think they know what we want to hear. I think if I hear Sweet child of mine one more time I'm going to 🤮.
I heard in a interview once with Gary Holt saying that they (Exodus) basically ripped off “Beating Around the Bush” and turned it into “Verbal Razors”. It’s a bit different but you can definitely hear the influence in the riff. Super rad.
Dude..!! The opening bit sounded totally like “Oh Well “… the Peter Green thing…! Sounded excellent..! Did I win a buncha guitars and amps today..? Can..! Thanks man..! …hee hee…
I 💯 agree with this. Most people don’t know that that BIB was the kickoff of the Johnson era. It was like saying goodbye to the 70s and Bon (May he Rest In Peace)
Rob's like "I'm diggin' the SG so let's keep rockin' some Angus!" Main riff from Limelight by Rush is easier if you start on an up too , at least for me. This Angus Riff is similar to that Fleetwood Mac song "Mighty sorry bout the shape I'm in, I can't sing I ain't pretty and my legs are thin" I forgot the title but I have Google and Google knows _everything_ 🤣✌️❤️🎸🎶🙏
I remember trying to learn this riff from a tab around 20 years ago. Man only like 6 years ago I had the idea to start on an upstroke. It kinda worked from this point on but I still lack the rocknroll feel.
Riff Raff is a fav of mine.. Angus & Malcom come up with some awesome riffs & they are so basic.. That's what makes them so good & add to that Phil's metronome like simple drumming gives ACDC that sound.. It all changed when Bon died..
The entire Powerage album is full of underrated bangers. Riff Raff, Sin City, Down Payment Blues and Gimme A Bullet to name a few.
Gone Shootin' slaps as well.
Whats next to the moon
So true, such a great album. And what an intro: Rock and Roll Damnation --> Down Payment Blues ---> Gimme a Bullet, incredible songs, massively underrated
Agreed my fav studio album of theirs
Gimme a Bullet wins for me! Girl's Got Rythm from HTH is gold too!
The live version of Riff Raff (first track on If You Want Blood You’ve Got It) is one of Angus’ best performances 🤘
That whole album is raw bluesy magnificence.
....but she gave it to anybody!
Yes
Best live album...... Dead or alive I've got a 45..... 🇳🇿👍
Great riff, thanks for the breakdown. In my eyes, "Ride On" is the most underrated AC/DC song, as a whole - maybe classic rock song ever, even. Cheers!
Yep, 100% agree with you!
I just took a listen, that's a fantastic song! Not what I expected.
I like how clear Angus playing is in this, that vibrato is so killer
One of Angus’s finest solos
Never attempted to learning it until a GIRL asked me to teach it to her. Great song! One had better tap their foot to stay in time. It's slow, and timing is key.
"Squealer" takes the cake in my opinion.. Angus went WILD on that song. Best and most underrated classic rock song ever. "Ride On" is very calm and melancholic as well though.
Let’s Get It Up is an underrated riff by AC/DC. Simple yet effective.
Agreed.
Brian's best vocal..
@@bombercountyblues The man had an unparalleled snarl.
Yes. That one is tricky
It’s a bit of a nod to Fleetwood Mac’s “Oh Well” opening riff, which I didn’t notice until a few years ago.
Definitely. When I heard this one played, I thought "Why is he playing a Fleetwood Mac riff?"
More then a nod!
Yeah, it's pretty much the same riff!! Still a brilliant song.
Danny Kirwan lick over Peter Green lead
Great riff, in keeping with "Oh Well" and "Walk This Way".
Definitely!
First album I heard was Powerage. My uncle cued up Down Payment Blues and I was hooked. I often use this riff as a warm up because it incorporates more than one technique. Your spot on with the upward picked note.
Powerage is a great album. The VH1 live version of "Gone Shootin" is just phenomenal.
Angus and Malcom are responsible for some of the greatest riffs of all time. Riff Raff, Dirty Deeds, TNT, Whole Lotta Rosie, Long Way to the Top, Jailbreak, the list just goes on.
Sounds very much like the Peter Green intro on Fleetwood Mac's 'Oh Well'
I read somewhere that Malcolm got his inspiration from that song
My favourite riff of all time, always been…was inspired by the fleetwood Mac “Oh well” riff. Absolute classic! That opening upstroke is interesting indeed…don’t know if I’ll be able to ‘unlearn’ the way I’ve always played it…
Angus talked about that being Malcom's idea in an old Aussie rock mag. Oh Well
Bro....this is my favorite AC/DC song ever! Thanks for making this one!
what's the name?
Had tix for AC/DC given to me for X-mas. They announced after tickets were out that Axl was taking the lead vocals. This and Riff Raff are my two favorite guitar riffs to play. Love it!!!
Landslide off of Flick of the switch is the most underrated song and riff in their entire catalogue , they go flat out from the start and a killer solo too .
Criminally close to Peter Green’s Oh Well. Great riff regardless
Yes I love how much acdc content is happening I love this song ever since I was little I had wanted to learn this thanks man awesome job
Always reminded me of "Oh Well" by Fleetwood Mac. Great riff! Cool video. 😉
Love the Angus riff and how he starts with an up-pick. Thanks for sharing and creating the Angus legend course too!!
I want to know how to clean up my technique/phrasing/picking. You are knocking it out of the park with these explanations, and I'm planning to sign up for the course.
One of my favorite riffs from the Highway to Hell album - don't understand why they did not play it live more...
I’ve been an AC/DC fan since I was 15 in 1990. And that is probably one of the only very few guitar riffs I don’t think I have tried to play. It is absolutely excellent and I am playing it now following your lesson thank you
This is actually my "go to" AC/DC riff. Always impresses bystanders.
Hail Caesar is actually a pretty banging riff. Along with some newer ones like Hard Times and Rock or Bust
Try 'Landslide' from Flick of the Switch
As a Blueser I always loved this song. They never play(ed) it live ever since. Very close to Oh Well from Peter Green but the flat 5th note (Bb) does the trick here. I never played it really round. So the correct picking seems to me like an eye opener. Thanks!
Great video!! One of my favourite AC/DC riffs, tricky to get under the fingers at first but once nailed it's a fun riff to play! Thanks for showing some love to underrated AC/DC tunes
My favorite riff of theirs no doubt. So happy this video was made. Girls Got Rhythm is another banger.
Heck yeah brother. Just preordered the masterclass. I am ready to channel my inner angus 😎
Has that "Oh Well" kinda thing
Yes! Riff raff is the best Acdc track
I’m going to buy your Angus young course. I’ve been playing since 1990. And not too bad , but I have a full time job so haven’t got time to work this out for myself , even though I could with time. You make this s**t look so easy, dude. Lol. Great choice, the Bon era is full of super bluesy treats that are hard to beat. And sometimes hard to play. Rock on!
Great classic Acka Dacka riff! Well done Rob.
Probably because the riff is about 90% the same as "Oh Well" by Fleetwood Mac Peter Green era.
Aha! It's the up-pick! That's why I was struggling with this lick. Thanks man!!!! Great tone too.
Back in Black was written on some feeds 5 months before Bons death RIP BON And Malcome, Brian Johnson being new I read didn't say anything till now
Source , some where in Black*
The album was composed by Johnson, Angus and Malcolm Young, and recorded over seven weeks in the Bahamas from April to May 1980 with producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange, who had worked on their previous album Highway to Hell
Either way , No one replaces Bon,not Brian ,Brian was definitely the best guy to replace probably one of the best Rock n Roll performers since Lemmy and Ozzy , Brian not a lot realise was watched in the band he was in by Bon , or is it Iron Weedy Chinese ot Thai stick rumour pmsl
Great vid as always man , I'd love hear you doing a full on Cowboys from Hell ,it was f...kin incredible RIP Dime
As for Iron LA Cheese , sorry,Maiden , what happened to Sex, drugs ,n Rock n Roll ! Personally ,who think he made a twat outta himself than the poor Barstool who's waited ages and maybe followed them since DiAnno left ?

You have the best tones among youtube guitar ambassadors. No contest

If You Want Blood from HTH is my fave.Great channel Robert, love your work.👍
1:39 .. and if we're not enjoying the time we're picking what are we supposed to enjoy??!!
Great lesson and yes, a killer lick!!
I like flick of the switch riff as well....I play it religiously when I warm up for some reason...and high voltage also has a fun groove to play
Beating around the bush is my favorite riff and the next is touch too much. I love all the songs they've done I'm more interested in the Bon Scott era. Whole lotta Rosie 😂
Love this album as many have mentioned. I also love the song soul stripper from the jailbreak album as a deep cut.
If you break this riff down as 16th notes using the "one-e-and-a-two-e-and -a..." formula, it makes sense for the first note to be an up stroke because the first note is on the "-e-" beat (coincidentally the e note as well) which is an off beat. Your tone is on 🔥. Between Angus and Barry Goudreau listening lately I want to bust out my sg and Marshall.
Great video lesson. This is such a great riffing song. What a riff. Great song. I love the tone you get on this video.
Powerage could well be my favorite AC/DC album. Solid stuff!
Man, great series Robert! I do enjoy and look forward to each lesson that you provide!! XO my good man!!!
yep. agreed. it’s the one that took me the longest to master. i don’t think it can be talked about without mentioning Oh Well by Fleetwood Mac. great to see someone rose with they love for it. 🤘🏻🖤🤘🏻
Long live AC/DC!
Great vid, and love the Justice hoodie, my first concert.
Don't ask me what I think of you...just might not give you the answer you want me too...🙂...I mean it sounds like Oh Well, Peter Green
great in depth lesson. Nice control.
So it goes!
Excellent video. I can pickup my guitar and play this now. I wish youtube was a thing 40 years ago
ROBERT, Try to make a video lesson about the 70's and early 80s AC/DC tunings of each song that is NOT at A440, because I'm curious to know which songs are NOT at A440. Also EVH van halen songs weren't at A440 also which you can make a video lesson about to know which songs aren't at A440
This would be a FANTASTIC lesson that a lot of us could get some mileage with! Do this please! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
BATB is bad ass. Evolved from Backseat Confidential. It simply rocks. Had a person call it a rock-a-billy riff which I found interesting.
This is a great song . That riff is pretty much 'Oh Well ' by Fleetwood Mac though.
Beating Around the Bush was one of my favorites! Back in the day.
Reminds me of Oh Well Fleetwood Mac?
"Send For The Man" from Fly On The Wall is a heavy riff, I've never seen a tribute band cover it.
The intro into The Razor's Edge sounds pretty challenging as well.
insightful knowledge and lessons apart, your tone is so good! is this from some real amp recorded? may i ask the signal chain please?
Hi Robert
I love playing that Riff, thanks for the vid.
I was wondering if you know how Angus does his part on Who Made Who?
Cheers
Rob
The intro to SRV life by the drop is the same lick, been playing it for years awesome 👌
Awesome 👍, I've never tried to play this one, thanks!
Thanks dude, super awesome riff. Peace n love!

Well done! How did you get that great sound? Which amp did you use? Thank you so much. Greetings Thom
Man I was hoping for beating around the bush. My favorite ACDC tune! Kick ass!
i like high voltage and for those about to rock the best of them all. however, this was a great choice for a riff lesson
Great job, Rockert Baker!!!
I heard in a interview once with Gary Holt saying that they (Exodus) basically ripped off “Beating Around the Bush” and turned it into “Verbal Razors”. It’s a bit different but you can definitely hear the influence in the riff. Super rad.
Its amazing how much I pick up just watching your technique
Dude..!! The opening bit sounded totally like “Oh Well “… the Peter Green thing…! Sounded excellent..!
Did I win a buncha guitars and amps today..? Can..! Thanks man..! …hee hee…
"What's next to the Moon" can make for a great cover song in one's repertoire!
Direct steal from Peter Green's "OH Well" with the original Fleetwood Mac. He started the riff with an upstroke, and also picked every note.
I close my eyes and I hear "Oh well" Good old Fleetwood Mac.
I learned that song in high school. In fact, I learned "Oh, Well" that same day, which lead me to this song. Great choice.
Hell yeah!! When I first heard this song om Highway to Hell, it became my favorite AC/DC song
I 💯 agree with this. Most people don’t know that that BIB was the kickoff of the Johnson era. It was like saying goodbye to the 70s and Bon (May he Rest In Peace)

Awesome video!! Anything and everything from Powerage would be cool!
Totally awesome!
Was just listening to the Dirty Deeds album this afternoon....top tunes
This song made me an AC/DC fan. It’s basically Fleetwood Mac’s. ‘ oh well’.
My favorite is Hells Bells. So laid back...
Riff Raff is a fav of mine.. Angus & Malcom come up with some awesome riffs & they are so basic.. That's what makes them so good & add to that Phil's metronome like simple drumming gives ACDC that sound.. It all changed when Bon died..
Always loved that riff.
Reminds me of World Keep On Turning by Fleetwood Mac, especially live. Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, of course. Peace ✌️
