hello everyone. i saw this video when it first came out and i found the chats to be a very welcoming place, lot of people sharing opinions and being very civil. people were in support of or against this ship and it was going great! MUCH better than the first Rwby forums i was in.
But recently I've come back and something needs to be said..... I apologise if i explode a little, i just need to get this off my chest. I've had the bad luck of running into something again an again no matter where i go in this fandom. and If i'm overly harsh, please tell me. I mean no offense to anyone.
Additionally, Miss Critter, If you find this and I have misunderstood the point of your video, please tell me and i will remove this comment without protest. Thank you.

I see a lot of people talking about how shipping ruined the show, and that's fine. And then i see people talking about how much better black sun was, and how toxic one particular ship is.
And I think you missed the point of the video. I have no right to tell you who to ship or not. But, to paraphrase socrates, having an opinion on ships IS shipping. And there's nothing inherently wrong with that, but in a video about how we're letting shipping run amok and ruin the experience, everybody has started talking about how toxic specific ships in the comments, i.e shipping. And i'll let you guess which one.
"but it's a toxic ship"? Well, not inherently. In fact, frankly, it wouldn't matter WHICH ship they were all saying we should do without! but attacking people over it isn't going to make it any better. Attacking ANYONE over ANY ship is not going to make anything better.
In my time in the fandom i've seen less toxic shippers and more toxic retaliation towards shippers of various kinds. That said, because bumblebee is so frequently used in the comments, and i've had the bad luck of running into the backlash so many times, i'm going to use them as the example. As a result some of these examples cannot be applied to other ships, but some can and feel free to apply them as you like. And I apologize to anyone who has been a target of harrasment for disliking it, you are perfectly valid to feel affronted about that, but so too have fans and even creators been affronted over liking it. and NO ONE deserves to be treated that way.

I'd like to point out that the suicide hoax had us labelled as toxic by many outside sources not for our support of ships but our actions AGAINST them. And worked not because of an an innate toxicity withing this particular ship or fandom (it was a copied from another fandom who shall remain nameless, for one thing), but because no rational person wants to believe a community would FAKE A SUICIDE as a smear campaign over THIS.
I even found a letter from a former moderator of the rwby critic reddit who resigned because bumblebee hate is not only getting disturbing but actively hampering constructive criticism. He didn't and still doesn't support the ship, but he drew the line at people saying rubyxyang would be healthier. Given how they are openly fine with speaking their mind, I find them to be the most objective person available on the subject and while i don't agree with everything they say i do encourage people to check out their tumblr. They have some very good rational criticisms of the ship and the show in general and aren't afraid to condede points.

I'd like to point out he is a published rwby critic openly critical of bumblebee and was, naturally, mocked for "not wanting the show to be criticized" and for being a "biased shipper" simply because he was not harsh enough on bumblebee in their eyes. I have experienced similar, a number of discussions on character arcs have ended abruptly with, "well yes, but that was bumblebee so it doesn't count"
once again, if you dislike bumblebee THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT. you are perfectly fine to criticize the show on it's own merits. But when Eruptionfang can say things like "Swapping crotch snot and taking a sip from that furry cup" and Adel Aka can say adam should abuse blake more, not because he feels it would convey the abuse better but because he feels she deserves it and in a later video that he hopes YANG starts abusing her and protesting that makes you 'toxic'? then we've reached a problem area. Adel thankfully took the latter video down after it got him banned from reddit, but then made another about reddit 'censoring' him.
No matter WHO you personally do or don't like together, this is not okay.
And please, PLEASE let's stop saying what was, and wasn't monty's plan. we have no IDEA what monty's plan was, because he kept it to a very few people and changed his mind CONSTANTLY.
All we know is that before the show even began he said he would be happy to have lgbt characters, and that he wanted them to take it slow if they did. He was happily talking about a scene in the v2 commentary where yang ties a cherry into a knot with her tounge and shows blake that they had to cut because of technical issues so at the VERY least it seems he'd be okay with the idea. Anything else is conjecture or confirmation bias.
Neath oum has specifically asked everyone to just STOP using that for criticism because it is both disrespectfull and painful to his family. A friendly reminder that he does not work for roosterteeth, he is an independent lawyer who freelances with them SOLELY to support this project. And people have been trying to correct him, to tell him they know his brother's plan and his brother better than he does and that if he doesn't support their vision he must have never loved his brother.
"But they're shippers/non-shippers/bbshippers/blksnshippers/someothergroup. They deserve this" No. nobody deserves this.
I have no problem with you disliking the ship, in fact to everyone here who has criticized the ship based entirely on it's execution in the show, THANK YOU. I'm probably going to disagree with you on some points, but that's life and it's perfectly fine. I honestly enjoy debating with you all, it's a real treat.
But my Very first forum interaction in the fandom was someone assuming I was a bumblebee shipper and letting loose pre-emptively. Abusive behaviour is not exclusive to the people who argue FOR a ship, and while i am deeply sorry for your own experiences (and i hope, i HOPE they have been better than this) i am asking you, you personally not to let them shape you. In retaliating against all shippers reflexively, you can JUST as easily ruin someone new's experience.
Please let it stop here. I ANY other fandom i would make the plea that i know you are all better than this. As it is i can only hope.

Blake and Ruby, two of the central characters in the show, have never had a conversation.

Oh, they did have a conversation. ...Back in Volume 1, Episode 3.
And they haven't spoken on screen since.
Thats why none of these relationships are believable. Half these characters don't even talk to eachother. How am I supposed to believe that Yang and Blake are in love when Blake has said more words to Sun than she has her ENTIRE. TEAM.???

You'd be surprised how little characters talk to each other I don't think Adam says a single line to any of the main girls other then Blake and maybe like 3 to Yang
Yeah theres a lot of stuff that's odd. Notice how Ruby and Weiss don't know who Adam is. Wouldnt it have been interesting to See Weiss' reaction if she saw Adam's face.
Ruby's talked to Blake more times in one season of RWBY Chibi than she has in the entire 7 volumes of the main show.

In defense of Ren and Nora, when they held hands on the airship, Ren was the one to reach his hand out and hold Nora's hand. It was important because he was the bigger shutoff of the two, and rarely expressed his feelings about her, if ever, so this was meant to demonstrate how much he appreciated her.

Ok but he also goes for a hug with Yang. And seems much more receptive to affection from Yang. Yang. He has never talked to Yang. Or how about Weiss, the biggest shutoff reaching out to Yang and hugging her? No one was taking that as confirmation that they were dating.
Holding hands is great and all, but it's not enough to be an obvious sign of who's dating who. Especially since Ren had just killed the monster who killed all off his family and had done so because of Nora's help and was finally at peace. There's hundreds of reasons he could have held her hand first. I honestly didn't know they were dating till the fandom declared it so after the fact, and even now I think it's too vague. And as shown in the video, they don't keep up that level of contact or intimacy the entire next two volumes.
I'd care about Ren and Nora if they didn't take 7 Volumes to kiss?.. I just stopped caring because it took too long.. so when it finally did happen. "Wow.. who cares?" lol was my reaction.

Can we all just agree that RWBY Chibi has given us far better character interactions than the show has? Like Neptune and Sun's friendship gives life.
Also Blake’s secret love for Zwei was really cute: threatening to shave his butt if he tells anyone about them snuggling. They also portrayed Ruby and Yang as actual sisters.
My favourite dynamic out of RWBY Chibi is Roman, Neo and Jaune. It's like they're larping together and its adorable.

Honestly I feel like a lot of these problems stem from RTs wishy washy was of taking fan ideas. It’s their story, leaving literally almost all relationship vague in this clumsy way just feels like a lack of decisiveness. They want their cake and to eat it to. Give the fans what they want AND not fully commit so you don’t have to deal with backlash and can focus on what story elements you want. This paired with their apparent fear of actually going all the way or fleshing out any romance leaves essentially leaves everything to fanon. RT needs to put its foot down and actually just make a choice and go with it.
Ah like someone who is in an open relationship. They want the freedom to date whoever but also want to have something serious with a person.
I feel that's because THEY don't know what they are. They're kids who don't express themselves well and have been hurt a lot in the past, so their building up their friendship and coming out of their shell fiest

@@arrexu01 it's more they have a habit of taking on promising artists, is my understanding. Most of their staff joined the team that way, even before rwby started, including monty. And sometimes they bring Grimm with them. A lot of prominent fanartists are known to have become designers on the show.
I still think Blake and sun were the best WRITTEN relationship in the show. They were friends first and had a natural progression of there relationship.
Sun was a stalker, and stalked her on 3 different occasions, as well as being a creep and watching team RWBY's dorm room. If I was Jaune, Sun would've had his face caved in a long time ago.

They had one real conversation, which was when they first met. And that was one of the best conversations in the show, and I want so much more of it!
I mean that is said but that has nothing to do with shipping, shipping, and I mean actually shipping not stupid people bitching as loud as they can, is saying "I think these 2(or more) characters could make a good relationship together" there relationship in the original medium has literally nothing to do with it. I mean crossover ships are a very real thing for instance.
Honestly i don't see any of them as friends since after volume 1 i haven't seen any of the two teams hanging out and we actually see it it's either off screen stuff or we are simply told like and we are supposed to believe it they are more acquaintance than friends volume 5 is where the both teams seem to actually talk to each other for once in the six to eight month they been away sure jaune nora and ren were with ruby but we never see much except when they reach to the town then they separate and become a backstory for ren and we still don't know shit for nora

You'd think given how much black is a part of Ruby's outfit, she and Blake would talk more. But nope. Characters can only talk to two other characters, excluding single lines in plot crucial moments.
My biggest gripe with Bumblebee was the solid fact that it didn’t feel...natural? Idk. I felt like BlackSun did a much better job at building the relationship between Blake and Sun. Hell, those two I felt like had so much solid chemistry. Yang and Blake had their moments when they fought Adam. Which made me realize that Adam was literally used for Bumblebee, when in reality, he had SO MUCH MORE potential!! Hell, he was branded by the Schnee Dust Company and guess what? WEISS HAD ZERO CLUE WHO ADAM WAS!!
I read somewhere don't remember where that BlackSun was supposed to be endgame by Monty, that's why they had so many scenes together but then Rwby writers said fuck that

sad too. I shipped them a lot. But the writing started going downhill ever since volume 3. The Sun and Blake arc was good, I thought they will finally seal the deal except ow it's uncertain, because Sun's voice actor left rooster teeth so I doubt the character will come back, along with many, many others.

Couldnt agree more. Having just finished watching the Hyperdimension Neptunia anime you just know Neptune and Noire are in love and for Nepgear and Uni its even more obvious. Bough Nepnowa and Unigear have excelent chemistry.
Neptune and Noire only held hands when tied down and drowning where it could be dismissed as practicality of Neptune trying to pull Noire a little bit higher so buy a bit more time, and you just know theyre in love. Their very first scene together Noire uses her sassy personality to call Neptune a bite sized idiot, to which Neptune runs up to her well closer than what people would consider personal space and says - What ever Noire. You know you love me! - to which the cundere Noire blushes and acts dismissive. Their next scene together shows Neptune napping on a pink boddypillow and Noire frustratingly? asking what is the queen of the other kingdom doing napping in per palice to which Neptune responds by saying that Noire doesnt have to be upstart and can ignore her, Nepgear urges her older sister Neptune to stop napping cos they came here to ask for Noires help with Neptune work ethic, Noire being a cundere who acts most cold when shes most attached to someone in a rude if you dont know her way says she has no intention of teaching her enemies how to do their jobs. Later Noire tells everyone to keep moving, she is ignored and says WHAT!? after her sister Uni points that out. To get her to not stop with her sillyness like saying things like wiw this is the famous sign you cant read from behind! Noire proseeds to use a stick to push Neptune to which Neptune says that she could be a lot more fun if she didnt have a stuck up her ass, to which Noire responds by saying that the only stick here is the one Im using the poke you in full seriousness while Neptune same as the audiance goes :D Oh and this is less than half of their interactions in the first episode.
Uni and Nepgear are less theatric and more mutual support, but even more obviously like each other.

Shipping is okay as long as its not the main thing your focusing on. Shipping in this show is just to bait people who like a ship to keep watching its one of the reasons shipping can either be really fun or break a fandom
I agree, except for romances that are about the ships. Shipping should be just fun side stuff that ideally builds character development. Or have a direct relation to the story father than a distraction from it.

So its kinda up to people on whether or not those 100 years count. Oscar has a similar problem. Do you count Oz if they are gonna be the same person apparently. Or do you just count Oscar. Of course Oscar raises more questions and fandom discourse than Aang. Because its much harder to consider the logistics of a body hopping, soul merging time wizard. Rather than the logistics of cryofrezing since that technically exists in our world already.

Black sun looked almost like a healthy straight relationship. We don’t have a current healthy one to relate to people. I had all toxic ex boyfriends. That’s why I like Rose Garden . It’s happy and fun :) and yes you don’t need sex to have true love. Plus I believe ruby would wait a few years she is a kind loving person

Sun and Blake had the most screen time with one another, the most interactions, slowly build an relationship with one another and than past V5/6 the series kinda forgets He ever Existed in the first place

Exactly shipping is for fun. But the fact that Blake and yang relationship literally got forced down our throats and serves no push to the story is so sad lmao. The sun Blake pair pushed the plot. Yang Blake didn’t and still has yet to do anything for the story.

You missed the last problem about shipping, it destroys the chemistry between the characters.
This affects more specifically the RWBY team, we always see Ruby and Weiss working only the two of them together, and the same thing happens with Blake and Yang, I understand that they can get along better than others, but that does not mean that they ALWAYS have to work like this, after all the 4 are a team and not two duos. And to ask a question in response to yours: if (theoretically) Yang was dating... Ren, just to use an example, and she had to choose between helping Ren or Ruby, who would she choose? See, with your logic, they shouldn't date ANYONE, whether they're a teammate or not.
That's how friendship is, though. You're naturally going to gravitate to whoever you are closest with. Shipping aside, Yang and Blake are best friends so it would make sense that they would spend a lot of time together and seek each other out to work with when on missions.

As a queer person myself, my biggest problem with Bumblee is the fact that I don't feel like it's actually a good representation? Like, I get why the "we're protecting each other" scene exists, but it's simply BS. From the moment Blake and Yang killed Adam, Blake has been this helpless princess who needs to be constantly saved and complimented, she can't stand on her own without Yang. At this point, it doesn't make her any different from any other damsel in distress who exists solely to be male MC's love interest(only in this case, it's another female MC). It's not really about representation, it's about Blake and Yang overall losing their identities and becoming these parts that can't be separated, they exist to be in love and that's it.

More than you'd think actually. I'm sorry, but this one frustrates me. Back when they're first afflicted by the apathy (before they actually show up) ruby screaming briefly snaps yang out of her trance. Her first words are "Ruby?". Ruby trusts yang to oversee the heist via her scroll and yang visibly panics when communication goes down, and is seen running well ahead of Blake when she's coming back from her fight. When lost in the djinn fog, Ruby's one of the two names she calls. When the leviathan seemingly swallows her yang stares, stunned, with an outstretched arm, and during the last volume she's openly critical of Ruby's plan, only going through with it because, in her own words, she trusts ruby.
I've been told that these don't count because they weren't onscreen together. Yang being upset at leaving ruby alone, talking about how proud she is or thinking she's gone don't count if Ruby isn't there with here.
My own brother lives in another house and we only talk sometimes, but I don't love him any less. I'm sorry, buy I just don't see yang caring any less about Ruby.

I actively don't participate in fan cultures anymore because of how horrible these things get. People call you the most horrific things for as you said, thinking two characters look cute together. It's so disappointing. Most of the communities that do this are made up of nerds. People like me who were bullied or ashamed about what they liked. And to see them turn around and do the exact same just makes me sad. I appreciate people brave enough to say that it's stupid, like you, because they get fire from both sides. One time someone told me to check my privilege cuz I shipped a popular ship, after they commented really rude stuff on all of my posts about said ship. I just thought it was hilarious for many reasons. Mainly because I’m literally a person that is a minority in almost every sense of the word. So someone throwing around that phrase over something as silly as cartoon characters was funny. Also cuz I usually ship rare pairs if I ship at all, so like I understand having so little content to work with (even though the ship they were shipping was huge as well). It’s just instead of using the energy to create something they enjoy for their ship, they decide to tear down someone else’s joy. That can be said about any ship regardless of size. And that’s sad.

I think RT’s lack of confirming ships is because they just don’t know how to write romance outside of cute little moments. Which is fine once and awhile but it’s like eating snack food over eating something substantial. They are doing it with BB, they are doing it with Ren and Nora, and they will do it with every ship.

Thing is, RT DOES know how to write beliveable or at least engaging romances, or at least they did. RvB for all it's MANY faults did manage to create engaging romantic subplots. The whole main story up through season 12 was the result of the Director going TOTALLY overboard with Allison, Church and Tex's "relationship" was both promenant and while frequently used for jokes it did exist (kinda, you know what I mean) and it lent to their chemistry. York and Carolina's ENTIRE story was York following the woman he loves down darker and darker paths as she sought to impress her father and do right by the memory of her mother, until she finally drove him away with a literal and very well choreographed fight and it had genuine long lasting emotional consequences for them both, ones that I at least really really related to. RT's BIGGEST strength has always been creating relatiosnhips of one form or another between their characters, at least to me. That was always why I felt so drawn in, why I enjoyed creating fan-works for their shows. I've never really enjoyed shipping EXCEPT in properties like RvB, early RWBY, etc that really felt like they created engaging relationships.
The lack of confirming ships honestly feel like they're cynically baiting, they don't WANT to come down on one side or the other for fear that the old-school audience that DIDN'T leave when they bait-and-switched the tone at the end of S3 will up sticks if the story they're invested in is confirmed as non-canon.
I think they’re just nerds who’ve never been able to write natural relationships, let alone natural story beats.

I’m so conflicted with bumblebee. Sure, it’s not a ship I particularly dislike or anything, but it kind of came out of nowhere to me when I first watched it. Considering all the scenes with Blake and Sun, I was sure they would get together, otherwise those scenes were just baiting us. However, due to how much I don’t like Blake, but do like Sun, I didn’t really want them to get together. Hell, Blakes personality just made me question why anyone in the show would want to get together with her in the show, especially Sun and Yang after what she did to them, Sun getting smacked by her for simple mistakes, and her abandoning Yang when she needed her without saying anything.

Blake felt guilty also she thought she protects Team RWBY by getting away from them. Slapping Sun was also understandable (but maybe a bit much) in both situations Sun kinda invaded her privacy. BlackSun felt one-sided for me. Bumblebee would be okay for me, but it would be time to confirm it because until now it feels just baiting. I think even in their first scene together Yang saw something in Blake and after Beacon, she was upset and hurt, at how Blake left her. (I really loved the Weiss - Yang conversation about it)

I personally hate how Blake *never* has to explain herself or apologize for abandoning her team at the end of Volume 3, or how Yang is clearly upset about Blake saying she's gonna "protect her" because it implied she can't protect herself but then it's never brought up again and they're buddy-buddy next time we see them. It's like the writers can't allow Blake and Yang to have any conflict whatsoever, even though there should be some, because then Bumblebee can't happen. Most of all, I hate how Adam literally died for this ship to happen. So much potential for his character was wasted. Like, why didn't Weiss play a role in his storyline? He literally has the SDC logo branded on his face, the Schnee family are his most hated enemies, yet she has ZERO relevance or involvement with him; it's just mind-boggling.

I'd argue that that comes primarily from the size of the Harry Potter fandom. There are probably more serious HP shippers than there are casual RWBY fans. From my experience with fandom in general and RWBY fandom in specific, the latter seems to have an unusual concentration of shippers for one reason or another, which means it's harder for rival shippers to avoid interacting, which means ship rivalries get more intense. Not intense enough to outshine the toxic minority of huge mainstream fandoms, but intenser than other niche fandoms.

My favorite ship is Ren and Nora because it’s “one of the most organic concepts” from the show. I really like Ren, he reminds me of myself: mostly quiet but will say something meaningful. And Nora is one of my favorite characters because she’s so hysterical but takes herself seriously.
I do miss some of the one-sided banter they had like in the first 3 seasons. Nora says or does something ridiculous, Ren replies with something logical, and Nora replies with something ridiculous. (i.e. “Boop”)
It’s also the most realistic relationship, and not as contrived as others in RWBY. Yeah it’s confusing how the writers are on and off about them dating, but there are worse relationships in RWBY, and more so in other shows.
My only gripe is that while Nora is the most talkative, we don’t know a lot about her. Yeah she’s an orphan, but how did that happen? Was she separated from her parents? Did they die? I’m not saying the show should hit the breaks on the main plot, even though it already does. But the show should give us some details on Nora’s character. Like how she got struck by lightning.

My problem with the ships in this show is the Pacing, and the Toxicity of their respective fandoms. You said it best, most RWBY shippers, or at least the vocal ones, see shipping as an argument to be had, and it causes too much infighting within the Fandom. Like just chill and all agree we still love the show. Also, I don't like the pacing for things in the show (in general as well, not just with ships). Everything is so rushed, and comes out of nowhere when it is shoved into our face, or it is started and then shoved to the side until waaaay later where they bring it back up and say, "hey look remember this?" and I hate it. Exibit A, Bumblebee; I love this Ship and was a hardcore shipper of it back in season 2&3, but then Blake had two full seasons of development with just Sun, and then he just leaves, and Yang goes from, "You left me when i was at my weakest, and needed you the most," to having a romantic relationship in the course of one season. I love this show, which is why I care that this show is being paced horribly.
One of my favorite parts of literally any show is seeing how different characters interact with each other. It doesn't need to be romantic, in fact I thrive off of strong friendships because that's what I personally value in my relationships. This is why I like watching sports anime, which have some of the best character interactions imo. For ex, in Haikyuu, Kageyama and Hinata are the same 'set'. However, this doesn't mean that we only see them interact. Hinata and Kageyama both have their own set of relationships that they have. The way Kageyama interacts with Suga is different than Hinata interacting with Suga. Hinata is friends with Kenma, Kageyama is less so. Literally all of Karasuno is a bunch of little 'groups', but they all have believable team status and all have different relationships with people in their team, outside of their groups. And its this type of interactions that makes me forgive the large casts that sports anime tend to have.
In RWBY, we hardly ever see such character interactions, which is my problem with how the show is currently handling shipping. I literally do not care if Bumblebee or White Rose or Renora is canon. But I will care if those ships are hindering on the characters ability to have other relationships. Characters are put into a group and hardly venture making relationships outside that group. We're told that they're all good friends but I struggle with the idea that Ren would see Weiss as a friend, because we've literally never saw them interact at all. There's so much potential to have cute character interactions and relationships but it's all thrown aside to show what relationships we already know of. The only characters I can remember off the top of my head having relationships with other people outside their immediate team is Ruby, Oscar, and Jaune. And even then, Ruby barely talks to Blake, someone who she should have a strong friendship with, and yet I'm left here thinking that between her friendship between Blake and Penny, she's much closer to Penny then she is with Blake.
So yeah. I don't dislike ships simply because I don't ship it, but because those ships are making character relationships difficult, something that is pretty important with a large cast of characters. It's a team oriented show. Let me believe that they would actually be part of a single team, and not two teams calling themselves one team.

I couldn't agree more! After watching Haikyuu!! my standards for friendship in media has gone up and I strive to make the friendships in my own stories as natural and strong as in Haikyuu!! The strong friendships also make the shipping fun, because the characters already get along so well. It shows that a strong friendship should be the base for a romantic relationship.

I think a lot of the issues people have with the show in general is caused by Rooster Teeth trying to appease every possible audience member, which causes way too much ambiguity, whether that be within the characters' relationships, morals, or whatever.
Like how they try to make Ozpin seem "evil" or at least morally grey, but last time I checked, he hasn't done a lot of inherently bad things.
And I genuinely liked BMBLB until RT just kinda tacked it on with the story to appease fans with little to no buildup.

I miss Sun. His gunchuk staff was one of the coolest weapons in the series. Also sometimes I just really want to see a bromance on the level of Beastboy and Cyborg from the OG animated Teen Titans in the show. Lucky Charms was the closest we got and I'm sad it came and went so quickly.

Shipping in RWBY is so stupid. RT seems to think that characters can only have one romantic interest throughout the whole show and their relationship needs to develop slowly across that time frame. That’s boring and stagnant. I ship Rosegarden, but my head canon is that Ruby would ultimately end up with Weiss. I just wish RT was more straight forward with their intentions. If two characters are going to date, yeah they need to have development first, but set it up so that its obviously the intention. Not every relationship needs to be a vague slow burn. Mix it up, create different dynamics, show us the struggles that come with being in a canon relationship, not just the lead up.

My own issue with this Bumblebee feels like it got thrown at us. Like in volume 7 if they built it more I would have been more okay with the way they threw Sun out the window completely. Ren and Nora I do think they are dating because of when he was about to attack Neo disguised at her, he quickly found himself severely weakened to the point of tears something we really haven’t seen him do in a long time.
Bumblebee felt for the longest times like a sister thing. But I can see how that can develop further yet it feels like the issue with Volume 6 did jump the gun on. Had they kinda eased and teased at it throughout the volume like they did with a lot of Sun and Blake im sure not many would have been angry. Either way shipping is not what I’m here for I am here for the Badass Qrow moments :p
I'm fine with bumblebee. It's just set up could be better and the whole bumblebee shippers (fanatical ones that attack people for no liking it.) kind of kills is bit by bit for me. I'm more of a black sun mainly because it was set up from volume 1 all the way to 4,5(?) It had so much build up that I felt like it came as natural if it were to be canon tbh.
It definitely would have been better if Yang took Blake to Junior's club alone at some point when they were still attending Beacon Academy. Sure, it's something that friends often do together in real life, but the fact that Ruby was so surprised to see Yang at the end of the Yellow trailer means Yang's clubbing activities are sort of a double life for her. She opens up to Blake about Raven, and she was looking for her in the trailer. It could have been equally intimate in their friendship had they continued the search together.
Like most things in RWBY, the lack of commitment and planning really hurts the ship for me. If they're together then have them be together. If they want to be together but the whole killing a guy thing is making it hard for them then make that a full on story arc for them as they try to untangle their feelings for each other from killing Adam and everything else involved with that.
That was my problem as well. It felt like a reaction to please the community rather than to actually write something that felt natural
I felt the same way in the BlackSun v BumbleBee shipping war as for the former it was set up early in the show and felt like it was progressing just to have a "subversion of expectations" (yes you can read that with the most arrogant snob voice) to have Blake and Yang love each other. When that happened I was seriously like "Wait...they are seriously doing this? I know there is a ship like in any fandom but really?" Of coarse if you criticize Bumblebee then you're and "-ist" or a "-phobe". I ain't saying how I saw Blake and Yang is the right way. I'm just saying that their relationship felt a bit forced.

FINALLY A VOICE OF REASON. Sorry I just really appreciate this video and the reasoning behind it because, although it’s a small portion, the RWBY shippers can be pretty terrifying, I do like the fan art though. But yeah I agree, I do think RT has handled the whole thing poorly, but I disagree on one count, I personally want to see more confirmed ships in media. I hate ship baiting in general. Setting up a relationship is fine but if their is not action taken just to string fans along, it gets on my nerves. I love how well you put this video. Shipping is supposed to be F.U.N., like you said. The FNDM really needs to understand what is canon and what is not. I kinda want to share my hot takes on shipping itself.
1. I never really liked Bumbleby (yes, flame me in the comments). I actually have a reason why I dislike it. No, not because I’m homophobic! I’m nowhere near homophobia, that’s F’d up. The reason why I don’t like this ship is because the chemistry between the two feels flat and not well-earned. Blake and Yang never share meaningful convos with each other, nor affection. They only share looks and doesn’t become separated. Plus, it ruins the team dynamic for RWBY. Instead of R W B Y, they’re now R W BY. My other problem is Yang. Her character changed MAJORLY after Volume 5. In the early volumes she cared for Ruby as a sister, spends time with family (i.e. Qrow in V3), and Yang is the only one that found out that Raven is the Spring Maiden (still needs to come out and say it). In V6 onwards, she feels brand new. Yang doesn’t share any of the development that I just mentioned. What does the writers do with her character? They ignored it. Yang spends her time attached to Blake and doesn’t thank Ironwood for the metal arm. Yang thought it would be a good idea to go behind his back and tell Robyn about the tower. It seems the fans doesn’t care if Yang and/or Blake gets blamed for on hiding details and sharing it out with any random stranger. I feel like the more and more these two get paired, the worst it’s going to be for the rest of the group. If it doesn’t become canon then it’s fine. If I don’t like the ship, then I don’t have to like it. I feel like they care for each other as friends only, no romance.
2. I feel uncomfortable about RoseGarden being canon in the show. I don’t think I can see Ruby and Oscar in a relationship. I just see them as friends and nothing more. I love Oscar for having so much development as a character in the show, but seeing him in a relationship with Ruby or any other female feels weird. As for Ruby, I love how she’s building up as a team leader for everyone. The only love I can see her in is her job as a huntress and her scythe. The two of them are socially awkward. Plus, protect the farm boi.
3. I get a massive headache when the topic of romance in RWBY gets discussed. The show is about students that train to be professional huntsmen and huntresses from the terrifying Grimm. The task for the show is stopping Salem, gathering relics, uncovering truths, learning about the important stuff, etc. etc. RWBY is all about Action, Adventure, Drama, and Suspense. There is no romance involved with the show. The genre of the show doesn’t have any of these: Romance, Ecchi, Shoujo, Slice of Life, Yaoi, Yuri. That’s nowhere close to what RWBY is. The fact that people only watch RWBY for the ships and nothing else is upsetting for me.
4. Every RWBY Q&A is predictable. I feel like all the panels’ Q&A segments I see is basically the Phineas and Ferb of the panel. I say this because every episode of P&F starts with the two knowing what they want to do, the friends join in on the fun and becomes a whole musical, Perry goes and fight Doof, his “Inator” gets defeated and makes the boy’s invention vanish like nothing happen. It’s a common cycle. With the RWBY Q&A’s it starts with interesting questions about how everyone feels about the volume, what they could see, and how the show can improve. There’s also the funny questions, which I won’t go into full detail. And last you’ll have people who will ask Arryn or Barbara about Blake, Yang, Blake and Yang, or Bumbleby. That’s the common cycle of the panel.
Those are my hot takes on the whole shipping nonsense. The fans need to understand about “moving on” if it doesn’t happen. If Bumbleby doesn’t become canon, the fans are going to riot, accuse the company AGAIN about queer baiting, and cancel their FIRST memberships/stop supporting Rooster Teeth. We’re grown adults, not crybabies. Let’s try to be subtle about this and make shipping fun, instead of forcing it down the show’s storyline.

White Rose is adorable, my favourite ship and I kinda hope it never happens. I just can't see Roosterteeth ever doing it properly without it kind of being really awkward and forced, as well as pointless. I agree that Ruby's motivations make it really hard for her to settle down with any of the cast, and I'd be happy with ending up single.
But I'm gonna devour those White Rose fanfics like there's no tomorrow.
Same, it's just a really awkward place to be in sometimes. I enjoy the hints and nods in the show, but the good material comes in the form of fanfics.
I generally don't mind shipping, but in a meta way I absolutely hate shipping in RWBY because it completely takes over discussions about the show entirely. Shipping should be fun I 100% argee with, but half the time if anyone mentions anything about shipping you basically abandon talking about the plot or character development or literally anything about the story to have a shipping war.
If people stopped shipping all together it'd make this show better IMO, and if people stopped having shipping wars it'd make the show better, but I don't see either happening.

The big issue people take up with bumblebee isn't the fact they tried making it canon, it's that they tried making it canon without it making any sense. Most of the people that hate it do so because 1) The rabid shippers that treat any criticism towards it as a personal attack; and 2)How they came to be a couple in the show was written badly. To a lot of people that hate bb it's because they see it as RT's latest attempt at pandering to a portion of the community by shoehorning something into the plot (like they did the whole election thing in v7). I could comment my personal feelings on bb, but i'd rather not, as it's liable to start a (pardon the expression)shitstorm in the comment section and I don't want to do that.

Once upon a time ago, you used to be able to like the show AND ship at the same time. I'll say it, i used to ship Bumblebee. Not as much as others, it was a lower tier ship for me. But then the Wasps (People who viciously ship Bumblebee, you know who they are) ruined it for me. Instead of "Hey, look at my fun fan art!" it was "Praise my ship or die", and that's what makes shipping such a fuss nowadays. Instead of being small mini-fandoms within a larger community, shipping has become cult-like with people going on whole social media crusades. The problem isn't shipping itself, but the people who are for whatever reason, absolutely poised to make their ship the ONLY ship.
You ignore that there is a a loud hatedom from the show, like look how there are almost daily videos from people complaining about things that have been talked to death (like Adam) yet still do it for the views

Here's my opinion when it comes to shipping and how it's implemented into a show by its creators. Shipping itself is perfectly fine, just don't go overboard if someone else thinks differently. And when it comes to creators making couples out of their characters I ask for only one thing: make it feel natural. Have them interact whenever they can, whether it's for laughs or not. Have them comfort each other when times are tough and argue when they disagree or get frustrated with each other. Doing this helps define their relationship. And it's for this reason I can't really get behind the shipping of Yang and Blake. They may have had a few small scenes together, but I'm hard pressed to think of any worthwhile interactions outside of those. It felt more like fan fiction than anything if you ask me.

Critter you have outlined one of my biggest troubles with the show, and it's the lack of conviction. One of the things I hate the most when discussing the show with my friends or people in comments. Is the idea that I just don't pay attention when the show wants to show something, but it's mainly because I don't like having to fill in so many blanks or come up with wild reasoning to justify a certain scene or get the meaning from it, and I'm the kind of person who enjoys looking for tiny details. It always feels like they just leave out so much that when you trying to figure out a concept you kinda have to just guess at so much simply because there's not a lot of pieces put forth to give the answer.
For example I was always upset at the Basement scene when Yang ran out with Blake, not because of shipping, but because one two volumes ago, and a character short Yang was hunting Ruby down, and saying she'd always have her back, so this notion just flew in the face of that when she didn't ya know grab for her uncle who was drunk and not moving and let her sister stay there, people try to tell me that she just trusted Weiss and Ruby to handle themselves, and she was going ahead of them so she could start her bike, and oh she was just in panic mode and grabbed the first person she saw.
And for me it's like that could work if you just kinda showed the agency, like trusting your sister's life to someone like that in that situation is a big deal, a few knowing looks maybe just a quick discussion or command to get Blake out would help convey why Yang left first with Maria instead of helping, heck maybe Blake was already getting "cat"atonic so Yang had no choice but to take her out first. Just go the extra mile and give us the meaning and we can infer these things from there, but as many see from critiques this was just BMBLBY pandering cause it feels so out of character, due to the ambiguity. And that's what plagues these ships, it's so ambiguous that you never know what's fully going on, and I hate having to assume so much, cause at points you just have head canon patching up any holes you might see.
Also thank you for the segment on the orientations and such not mattering, this is an action fight show after all, not a romance story those things are just inconsequential to what's going on.
@@drakingp2119 To be fair, Ruby and Weiss were being shipped when the White trailer came out. So that element of the fandom has been around since the beginning. It probably doesn't help that the fights are less frequent and not as dynamic.

In terms of my dumb ship I read a crossover Fate/RWBY crossover fic and really like the idea of Shirou/Ruby now even though there weren't any ships in that fic.
It could quell the toxicity, but perhaps also some of the passion. If you're forced to accept a relationship you don't like.... that's a tough pill.

Lucky Charms is just so adorable. They had such a great dynamic and I wish we got to see more of them together (even if Clover is almost never with Qrow) throughout the show.
Ya know, if they wanted to do the whole Bumblebee thing for the fans, they _really_ should’ve put more work into it. These two somehow managed start a relationship, when they hardly talked, and spent a good chunk of time separated. They tried the whole, “she left me, and I needed her” thing, but there was no real relationship built up before hand. They shared a dance once, and had maybe one real moment before that dance, but not much else. But people on the Reddit and Twitter call you a homophobe for thinking, “hey, this romance plot sucks. Why’d they do this if it’s so lazy.”

Why doesn't RT confirm ships ? Because a large part of the fandom is there to see the interactions between their favorite characters. They're writing the relationships as a way to keep this public for a veryyy loooooonng time, like, until the end of the show. Let's be honest, at each season RT loses a part of its audience and gains a new audience who got baited by the shipping stuff. This is money material to tease the audience, give them the food they want without confirming potential romance.
Also I'm really happy you adressed the Blake/Adam 'problem', like they're not dating etc. I totally agree with you on that. People tend to forget that RWBY is a SHOW and debating with arguments coming from a side product such as a comic/manga/novel isn't relevant at all. What happens in these side products isn't canon material, the show is the only canon.
I wish people could be more like you... because yes, shipping is for FUN. Whatever happens in canon doesn't matter, you can have your own way to enjoy a piece of media such as writing fanfictions about your fav weird ship or drawing it ^^. I will never understand the fandom wanting ships TO BE CANON that much, that's one of life's mystery I guess.

Yang Blake was a mistake because of the severe lack of interactions. Sun makes more sense as hes interacted with Blake a ton more and has on screen chemistry with her. There were 2 entire volumes with Sun going out of his way to help Blake. And while just helping her doesn't automatically make them an couple its a lot more believable than Yang Blake does. I dont remember any blush blush moments when Blake looks at Yang volumes 1-3.

There are so many characters in the show--too many, if I'm being honest--they could use it to their advantage by providing a ton of representation. Ruby could be aro/ace and it explains why she didn't care about finding someone to go to the dance with, and Ren could be straight/allosexual but his reserved personality explains his similar disinterest. I'll admit I was waiting for Blake to have internal conflict with her budding feelings towards Yang, as some people figure out their sexuality later. Meanwhile, Yang maybe had always known she likes boys and girls.
I mean at least as she's currently written Ruby feels pretty aroace. I'm down for it.

I don’t really ship rosegarden but not for the “ethical dilemmas”, I’m a lancaster shipper so its pretty hypocritical to bring up the age gap. I just prefer Jaune as a partner for Ruby than Oscar (Also Jaune is better than Oscar in general don’t @ me). See, the difference here is the same issue that people have when talking about writing realistic dialogue. In fiction, there is a certain quota you have to fill to convince your audience that you have a handle of your characters. In other words, being "realistic" or "true to real life" is not the end of writing good dialogue. And the same is true for characterization.
The whole "bisexuality exists" and "people can discover their sexualities later in life" is basically handwaving a lot of responsibility the writers have of properly characterizing their characters.
For example, a character believes in doing things properly and being merciful and has always done so except for this one instance in a climactic battle where they suddenly execute their opponent. There's always the argument that people change. People can be disillusioned. People can be hypocritical. But you HAVE to show the mentality shift. It has to be there, and it has to be CLEAR that progress is being made. OR if it was a genuine flaw in the character, it has to be acknowledged as one (in the case of a hypocritical character). Otherwise, it comes across as oversight.
The excuse that people aren't consistent with their behavior doesn't work in the realm of writing because that is a sign of poor characterization. It HAS to be set up otherwise it is by definition a character inconsistency. If Yang and Blake (despite showing an interest in boys) suddenly started showing interest in girls only later in the series, then it WILL come across as pandering and backfooting on established character.
When it comes to the complicated issue of sexual orientation, you honestly can't half-ass it because people are hypersensitive/hypervigilant about it. Carelessly dipping your toes in when you aren't even sure you're going to commit is just going to piss off both sides here. Sometimes people just need to be clear.
No one can logically say that their orientations were all set from the beginning. That would be obvious bullshit. All I'm saying is that making changes midway and then running with the narrative that it was always the plan is going to piss people off. Nothing is more aggravating than a creator with no clear direction. Audiences don't like getting the rug pulled from under them. You'll only get a positive reaction from "subverting expectations" from fans if you earn it. Retconning is just begging your fans to antagonize each other.

I’m very new to this fandom (just binged the show a couple weeks ago) and the state of the fandoms discourse that I’ve seen amazes me. Bumblebee and Rennora are the only two ships I actually care about but I really don’t dislike any of the ships I’ve seen (except Tauaradonna). Pretty much all of them i either recognize as crack ships or see the appeal of, even in I don’t personally ship it (this especially applies to pretty much every Ruby ship, I see her as aro/ace but I wouldn’t be upset with White Rose, Rose Garden, or Nuts and Dolts. Lancaster I think would be pretty out of left field but I don’t hate it). Even with Blacksun, which directly goes against my favorite ship in the show, I really don’t hat e Sun or the ship itself. If a ship isn’t legitimately abusive or pedophillic (Rose Garden is not), ship what you want!
Idk if this make sense or not, but each member of team RWBY (except maybe yang) feels like a protagonist of an entirely different story.

FUCKING. THANK YOU. I dont understand why there are those that feel that whole "your ship is wrong and you are offensive as a result" thing. I agree with almost everything you said in this video. I constantly compare this show to The Dragon Prince, because there are SO MANY THINGS RWBY could learn. Emphasis, but not obsession, tasteful introductions to LGBTQ+ Concepts, just GOOD CHARACTERS BEFORE RELATIONSHIPS. It frustrates me so much, because I used to adore RWBY. But now I don't want to even talk about it with friends. I ADORE Penny and Weiss as characters. Not as a ship though. White Knight is def my go-to. But I really don't like saying so in larger discussions (this being the exception). Regardless, EXCELLENT points, excellent video.
My problem with bumblebee was the most intense when Yang grabbed blake and led her to safety during the whole mine thing. Ruby was right there. Relationships dont get rid of deep sibling ties the idea that Yang and especially Blake seem so disconnected from the team annoys me even more than it used to cause since they were "Official shipped" The divide between the two pairs of girls has gotten bigger.. I want more friendship over shipping. Its why I like white rose. Ruby and Weiss seem to be getting closer and even if they are just friends its good to get more close friendship damn it. The other and main reason I love white rose is because of how they are both growing off learning from eachother. Weiss has become so much more of a goofball.
Ruby was the safest person there. She was the least affected, AND had her silver eyes. As opposed to Blake, who was the most affected person.
I thought it was already implied that eventually, Oscar would no longer be himself, and Ozma/Ozpin would take over. When they meet Ozpin for the first time and even now, they never implied that it was Ozma and Ozpin together, it was Ozma now fully integrated into the body of who we know as Ozpin, and him taking the name fully. They only call him Ozpin because that's how they met him and refer to him, but it's Ozma.

To this day I still think the funniest episode of "RWBY Chibi" was when Tai and Qrow were called to Ozpin's office cause Blake and Yang were in trouble. Them acting like a married couple was hilarious.

Most of the characters had amazing arcs, and personalities, and fighting styles up to volume 3, and after that, they’re being simplify to just existing for the sake of their ships. I’m tired of seeing Blake and Yang just interact with one another. Yang hasn’t even acted like a sister to Ruby at all this past season. It’s exhausting to know that these characters can have amazing friendships with other people (than the ones they always interact with) and it’s never thrown in. I feel like Rooster teeth avoided thinking out fight scenes, along with friendships and romance. It feels like they think about one thing, and don’t take that further. Imagine all the deep , dark topics that could happen in any of the rwby seasons if they expanded on an idea.
As for ships, I agree with the age difference with Lancaster and whiterose, it’s not fair to bring it up with Rosegarden and drop it when it comes to any other ships with Ruby. My favorite ship? I’m just floating around tbh. I don’t care about who ends up with who, as long as it makes sense and doesn’t feel like they were forced together for the sake of the shipping community
I wouldn't call any of the arcs "amazing". They're actually pretty below average character arcs.
