I was genuinely depressed at Elspeth's demise... She's never had a break, in her entire life. Her original home, was invaded and taken by Phyrexia. She couldn't stay on Bant. She found Theros, and Meletis, and fell in love with Daxos. She is then manipulated into killing Daxos. She endures the trials to get into Nyx, fights and kills Xenagos. And at the end, she is murdered, by a coward, and dies, alone. I guess it fits, with the Greek Tragedy theme...
As I read through the story, I got sadder and sadder. With each chapter I said, "Good for you, Elspeth. You're finally finding your place in a world. All this torment will be over." I was shocked when she made her ordeal. I was literally yelling at the book and almost at tears when she made her decision.
So, Heliod kills Elspeth because he feels like she, as a planeswalker, is a threat, but not only allows Ajani, who's also a planeswalker, to go free, but lets him take Elspeth back to the mortal realm? What?
It isn't entirely clear that he knows that Ajani is a planeswalker. He knew Elspeth was because he tried to heat her up from the inside out using the sun's warmth (a technique he has used to kill many before) but she was able to neutralize it, powerful enough to override a god's strength. Ajani didn't display any power as strong as this in front of Heliod. I think he also felt SOME compassion for her because he understood the circumstances: that she was tricked into killing Daxos and into helping Xenagos ascend, and that's why he told Ajani to bring her back to the mortal realm.
Andrew .O'Hara Pay 10 Phyrexian colorless (each one mana can be paid with two life instead), and the thing gets 10 +1/+1 counters and gains infect and trample and can attack as though it didn't have defender.
so theory time. elspeths dead, xenagos is dead :( and heliod pulled his crap. so the people are mourning elz for all she did, (hydra slayed, xenagos slayed, restored order) ajani brings her back to her mortal realm and she comes back as the first tri colored god, elspeth, god of the people, red white green. wouldnt that be sweet?
Brad J let's just hope they kinda stick to the lore as their stories have been criticized for not being , "with the times" or " not politically correct" hence the totally out in left field , wtf , where does this even fit , story; emmonberry red....
Guys I just thought of something. In Greek myth Hades take Persephone from the goddess Demeter and keeps her with him to be his bride but can only have Persephone for a part of the year. In the trailer we hear Erebos say he is" coming to claim his prize". Then knowing that the story doesn't end with Elspeth's death I think that Elspeth will definitely be making a comeback as a black white planeswalker!
I think Elspeth will be reborn at some point, maybe as a black-white planeswalker. She just seems too big of a character to kill... I hope. By the way, SCREW YOU HELIOD.
The Titans should be three-colour. So Cronus would be blue green black, because he’s the god of time as it relates to nature, but also ate his children to retain power. Hyperion would be white black blue, because he’s the father of the sun, the moon which is associated with night, and the stars which are associated with stargazing.
nonwatcher I hate to but iin, but I wouldn't be too sure: wizards made domri rade in the RTR block, and, right after in the theros block, xenagos, both of them being g/r walkers. There is always a chance, no matter how small.
After finishing Godsend, I raged for a few days, with many profanities directed at Jenna Helland. The story was great, but so many characters (including one of my edh generals) died.
Yes me too! I was upset but did not curse at jenna. I hope the people of theros worship elspeth and she returns as a white god over heliod. To finally find peace.
This is a very late reply, but I feel the same way. Jenna Helland did a great job with the writing, but I can't be mad at her for doing her job. These characters who I grew to care about suffered and died, and it's the sign of a well-told story that I felt as bad as I did. On the other hand, in Greek mythology, heroes did sometimes travel to and/or escape from the Underworld, so I'm hopeful - just like Ms. Helland said in the video - that this isn't the end for Elspeth.
Can also be interpreted as a double meaning. It's a "God send" because it was given to her by a god and allowed her to do wonderful things with it, such as killing Polukranos and Xenagos and being a great weapon in general. It's a "Gods end" because, obviously, it killed god mode Xenagos.
Coming here after seeing a certain spoiler for the Winter 2020 set. Hoping to see Godsend reforged and used to avenge all the evils that Heliod had inflicted on Elspeth and Theros as a whole.
Stephen Perteet in 2 or 3 years, they'll probably make "elspeth, the returned" (either a B/W or a mono W walker), who is trying to gather her lost memories before her death, and will eventually meet jace, who, as mind-mage, will somehow return them, and will then continue to do her whole "looking for a home" thing. aaaaaaaand then jace will go back to being over glorified as all fuck. the end
there is many stories in ancient Greek mythology about heroes returning from the underworld.theros isnt complete until see returns, after all it IS the Greek plane
I love how Jenna seems to be really affected when she's telling the Elspeth's story and ending... I love so much her true emotion...

It's not really a greek tragedy, but I admid it's really sad :O I mean, she never rested, always tried to help -.-

@@nisc92 It actually essentially is, many Greek Mythologies dealt with tragic stories like this.
Poor Pharika...even R&D struggles to find good things to say about her :(
So, Heliod kills Elspeth because he feels like she, as a planeswalker, is a threat, but not only allows Ajani, who's also a planeswalker, to go free, but lets him take Elspeth back to the mortal realm?
What?
Hyperintelligent Shade of the Colour Blue I think you would know, being a hyperintelligent shade of the colour blue... :D

First, Elspeth, the Returned would be hilarious and terrifying at the same time.
Secondly, Heliod is an absolute ass.
Kruphix is the God of Horizons, his domain includes EDH... yup, that's pretty much it.
Lol Kruphix is so op.
Love the dramatic violins in the beginning. JENNA: when are we getting an Arixmethes card?
R.I.P. my favorite planeswalker
I hate Heliod so much that I want the Eldrazi to find Theros.
no man. it's another plane for phyrexia!! all will be one
Andrew .O'Hara
Admittedly, there is quite a bit of metal on that plane. Imagine a Phyrexian version of Colossus of Akros.
monstrous infect??? XD
Andrew .O'Hara

Gaben Be Praised
Phyrexian Unlife.
Pretty cool conclusion to this part of Elspeth's story in my opinion. I look forward to see what they do with her next.
6 years later: hey elspeth is back
me: well, that took long enough!
so theory time. elspeths dead, xenagos is dead :( and heliod pulled his crap. so the people are mourning elz for all she did, (hydra slayed, xenagos slayed, restored order) ajani brings her back to her mortal realm and she comes back as the first tri colored god, elspeth, god of the people, red white green. wouldnt that be sweet?
Elspeth, God of Heroes? I could see it.
I would think she would be bant instead of naya

If Heliod wanted to kill her, why would he even care about her "dispersing into nothing?"
Yay! I've been waiting for this!
Rip elspeth u will always bein my hart
HOLY SHIIIIT i got the Iroas Beckoner card, one of my best cards, won several games with it.
Great, so Heliod kills Elspeth, I hope next time we come to Theros we get a Planeswalker vs God war
hres the thing, the other gods hate heliod too.
So... Much.. Feel

wait does that mean we're going to get a blue green planes walker in tarkir block?
no, we got blue green planeswalker in Born of Gods
yeah sorry just noticed that
nonwatcher I hate to but iin, but I wouldn't be too sure: wizards made domri rade in the RTR block, and, right after in the theros block, xenagos, both of them being g/r walkers. There is always a chance, no matter how small.
Red Blue Green
CHiLLtheBEAST eh close enough
Could we have gotten a spoiler alert?! God fucking damnit, it would've been nice to actually read Godsend Pt. 2 before watching this.
I cant heard MaRO speaking without think in a goat. O_o
sort of depressing ending X_X

What means R&D?
research and development
I think she is going to be resurected or something.
Can we get straight up explanations for all of Magic's history like this? There is just too much detachment between players and the story.
What if elspeth can planeswalk out of the underworld
No once a planeswalker dies they like don't have the spark that allows them to planes walk
AS IF Elspeth was down forever... Guys please... :)
Is it just me, or does Keranos look like Tech N9ne?
Lol he does
Hmm... revelry power... Better than coal?
Thank you based R&D Elspeth is gone 5ever
When forever is not enough...
GODS END... NOT GOD SEND (GODSEND) Was my first mythic rare.
Elspeth's weapon is called GODS END because the glaive was used to kill xenagos. Get it? A GODS END.
Can also be interpreted as a double meaning. It's a "God send" because it was given to her by a god and allowed her to do wonderful things with it, such as killing Polukranos and Xenagos and being a great weapon in general. It's a "Gods end" because, obviously, it killed god mode Xenagos.
+pokemonnnerd Nice 👍

Well, if the author of the book says that character died, I guess that's it...
Hien Nguyen there may be a rebirth down the line.

I hate Iroas so much.
