      Well....considering that Arrow Video is dropping an EPIC Gamera Box Set in July, that includes all 12 films and ridiculously cool bonus materials.....it certainly seems like the legacy is being honored. Hopefully between the box set, and the current resurgence giant monster movies appear to be having....we can look forward to an awesome A-list Hollywood adaptation soon!

    Excellent video! GOTU has always been one of my favorite movies of the genre. The film has great human characters and incredible special effects work, showing just how Kaneko and Higuchi were true visionaries.

    Blunova, I have a major favor to ask of you.
    I have a TON of respect for your as someone who is a champion for the Gamera Trilogy here on UA-cam. Shin and the MonsterVerse have made Godzilla the hot ticket item for a lot of giant monster UA-camrs....and I love that you are one of the voices out there singing the praises of the Gamera Heisei Trilogy...especially in how it compares to the Godzilla Heisei Trilogy.
    It just so happens, there is another huge category of competition where Gamera Curb-Stomps Godzilla....and that is in the 'Epic Box Set Department'....the upcoming Gamera Box Sex from Arrow is far far superior to the already released Godzilla Box Set from Criterion.
    I know home media releases aren't really your style, but I would love for you to do a video or video series comparing and contrasting the Criterion Set to the Arrow Set...highlighting the failures and shortcomings of the Criterion set and how the Arrow set excels.

      Thanks! I appreciate your enthusiasm and support. The upcoming Arrow Video Gamera box-set does indeed look very promising and like it might set a new bar for kaiju eiga home media. I will try to address it in some form. Maybe a live-stream. Gamera definitely needs some love.

    This is a great video - you have a knack for pulling out interesting bits of analysis that I’ve often overlooked, either out of boredom (VS series) or, in this case, just because it’s been years since I watched the film straight through.
    Also, the 4K remasters really flatter the Kaneko Gamera films, don’t they? I don’t think I ever fully appreciated just how good the films looked until now. I always thought they had some visual flair, but they’re just a joy to look at in these new transfers.

    • @SpaceHunterM
      @SpaceHunterM 4 роки тому +1

      I think they're good transfers, but the color grading is unmistakably revisionist, especially on G2 and G3.

      SpaceHunterM Fair enough - I wouldn’t argue for a second that the colors look natural, but I find them really appealing. Maybe I’m biased by years of Pure Hi-Visions and Kadokawa’s old HD masters ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      I would actually say that quality wise, it's the best Godzilla Era by far
      Outside of Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla, literally all of the Movies in those Era are either a 3/5 or even a 4/5
      It's just that there are some Godzilla Movies outside of it which are better than them (1954, Shin, Gmk, 2014 e.t.c.)

    As someone was a little let down after my first time watching it, it's nice to see a more in depth reason as to why someone thinks that this film is one of the best in the genre.
    Also what do you think of the english dub for the film?

  • @ChrisPeteG

    "Quality over quantity" in some ways could describe the entire Godzilla vs Gamera franchise dynamic.
    Godzilla is going on film 36 while Gamera is sitting at 12. To any new fan....the "homework" to catch up on either franchise is simply a matter of math.
    Yes, the Showa Gamera films are cheaper and cheesier than the Showa Godzilla films....but there are only 8 vs 15, they are shorter on average as well. As yourself...would you rather watch the 15 Godzilla Showa films? Or the 8 Gamera Showa films?
    Nowadays, most audience members watch the monster movies of the 60s and 70s to enjoy their dated, goofball nature. By modern standards...Godzilla vs Gigan or Godzilla vs Megalon don't feel overtly more 'high caliber' or 'serious' than any comparable Gamera movie. Modern viewers look back at ALL of it with a cynical, doubting eye. They are all 'corny giant monster movies from the 60s and 70s'
    Godzilla rebooted in the 80s, and started off strong, but always remained tethered to a 30+ year old film. The 3 Heisei Gamera films are of a much higher quality than the 7 Heisei Godzilla films. Gamera also started completely fresh in the 90s to develop a new audience.
    After the 1998 US debacle, Godzilla had a 6 film identity crisis where it could not determine what it wanted to be, sputtering out with a goofy throwback to films that were 30+ years old....and always determined to maintain even the slightest, but definitive connective thread to the original 1954 film....to the point of absurdity.
    Meanwhile, Gamera had ONE film in the millennium era...Gamera The Brave...a fresh reinvention to give Gamera a new identity in the modern world and honor the simpler, child oriented stories in a way that was legitimate and earnest. It didn't need a slew of new films to give Gamera a fresh but familiar new identity for the new millennium, it tried one film...and when it didn't take they didn't shotgun attempt after attempt....they accepted their strong effort even if it wasn't a hit, and decided to let Gamera rest again.
    Even now...as Godzilla juggles a multi-film Hollywood reboot, a drag of an anime trilogy, AND a hugely successful reboot in Japan....what is the status of the Gamera franchise? Waiting.
    Gamera had a fun short film a few years ago to show that Gamera could easily launch into a world of kaiju films dominated by CGI and work on a conceptual level.
    But if Gamera gives it a few more years and waits out this current burst of Godzilla films....they can once again focus on creating a single, impactful masterpiece of a film, maybe an entirely new trilogy of amazing Gamera films...and leave a much larger mark on the world of cinema.
    Quality over quantity.

    • @ChrisPeteG
      @ChrisPeteG 3 роки тому +7

      @FN-1701AgentGodzillaRangerPrime-El Indeed...the Gamera films always follow after the Godzilla films, and sort of avoid all of the mistakes or learn a lot of important lessons.
      Gamera films in the Showa era wasted no time getting right to it and positioning Gamera as a heroic friend to children to go after that very vital core audience. They were so effective the Godzilla films changed, increasing the bloodshed and presence of children in the films.
      The Gamera Heisei Trilogy avoided almost all of the pitfalls of the Godzilla Heisei Films.
      I am positive any Gamera reboot would expand on what worked in the Monsterverse and Shin and avoid what didn't work.
      Hell...the ULTIMATE middle finger would be for Gamera to be revived with an anime trilogy of its own....only one with more traditional 2D animation or a more photo-realistic CGI animation like Gantz: O.....
      Godzilla's anime trilogy was a big flop, if Gamera is brought back with an anime trilogy that completely hits a home-run, it would be dunking on basically all 3 of the Godzilla reboots we've had in recent years between G14, Shin, and the Anime Trilogy. If it pulls off the "awesome modern reboot, the successful Japanese reboot, and the epic anime debut" with a single trilogy....Gamera would be dunking on Godzilla like never before.

      “but there are only 8 vs 15, they are shorter on average as well.” But that doesn’t mean anything. That’s not a strong case as to why Showa Gamera is better than Showa Godzilla.

    • @ChrisPeteG
      @ChrisPeteG 3 роки тому +3

      @@strangeman7723 Very true, I'm not exactly arguing which is outright better in quality...but if a franchise newcomer was looking to marathon either series, the Gamera franchise is a much more manageable proposition.

    I still love the Godzilla Vs Mothra movie from 1992 even with all of it's flaws as it's the only few monster movies that I saw on TV, at a convension, and I even seen it a lot of times with my mother.
    (It's just one of those movies that I can't bring my self to dislike.)
    But I also really enjoyed the Gamera movies both the Showa and Expecilly the Heisei movies for all of the reasons you stated in your video.
