The UES is massively expensive, however there’s a stylistic and drastic change between The 5th/Madison/Park/Lexington Avenue section and the 3rd/2nd/1st/York Avenue section. I grew up on 78th and Park next to Lenox Hill Hospital and the Met. I hid in the Egyptian wing at the Met as a little girl. My older brother lives on 65th and 3rd now. Sledding in Central Park in winters. I have great memories. We left in the 80’s.
When I was in New York in 2002, I got lost (because I took the wrong subway), and I had to cut through these neighborhoods to get to my hotel (the Hotel Beacon). It felt so safe and people were very helpful directing me to where I needed to go. I love the charm and the vibe and aesthetics of that area. This video was also great because you had a local, so it wasn't just a tourist viewpoint. Can't believe you opened with Carl Schurz. We lived on far east 85th for fifteen years. Sold our apartment to a couple with a child and one on the way. Other than the kitchen renovation, proximity to CSP was the big selling point.
Yes, there’s money in the UES but ironically some of the cheapest rent in Manhattan is also there lol. All the young people want to be in other neighborhoods and downtown. Covid came and even a lot of those people moved to Brooklyn. East side of UES is what we call “yopros” young professionals and bros. Our luxury building in a quiet/popular Brooklyn neighborhood had a LOT of manhattanites move in during covid, it will be interesting to see how the trends move going forward. UES has a lot of older housing stock and I think developers will have a hard time offering the amenities renters want nowadays. To buy, believe it or not you might be able to get some value out of the UES right now.

Jon, as always, nicely done video. Yea, the brownstones on the upper east side are historical treasures that will hopefully be preserved in the coming decades. The same thing is happening in London where I live and grew up, as is occurring in New York City.. Rich millionaires and some billionaires that dont even pay tax or use tax loopholes to pay virtually no tax come to New York and purchase the property as a summer holiday home or use it as an investment on the property market without even living there most of the year, thus pushing house prices and rental prices up so that even proffesional middle class people cant afford to live in areas that were once affordable those on low salaries then get pushed further away from the heart of the city, ie, Mahattan and Downtown Brooklyn in NYC and in London in would be zone 1 and 2 which includes Central London and West London and inner London. West, Central and South West London have always been pretty wealthy places but even many neighbourhoods the poorest part of London which is the East side of London is starting to become too expensive due to gentrification. Yes like NYC in places like Williamsburg, Bed Stuy and Harlem have become safer, like some neighbourhoods in London that used to suffer alot with crime, knife crime and even some gun violence between gangs, yes even London in the 90s and early 2000's had an issue with gun violence in certain rougher neighbourhoods due to the poverty and drug trade, although most homicides in London are caused by stabbings, for UK standards although not as bad as NYC even does today. Now the roughest parts of London are further away from downtown/ Central London and the same thing will prob happen to NYC where anywhere close to Manhattan becomes a rich persons playground and many of the original tennants will be completely pushed out unless they make at least 100k a year.
Same thing has been happening in Vancouver over the last couple of decades with all the hot money coming out of Hong Kong and mainland China. Governments at every level have their snouts in the cash trough and could care less about Canadians who can no longer afford to live where they're born.
Its true I am live in New York, but can't believe how Brixton (London's version of Harlem) has changed over the last 20/25 years. Gentrification is world wide.

That's interesting. I always thought it was Tri-Beca because it's the East Coast version of Hollywood. Don't misunderstand, the architecture, west of 2nd Avenue is cool, but its a little too conservative. The West side flexes the same way, but it has a more relaxed vibe to it. Nonetheless, great video! Thanks for sharing.

This is so beautiful. Have the Blueblood children not moved to the West Village?
Upper East side my beautiful neighborhood

I was, hurt my foot filming that day. But i'm good now, thanks!
