Excellent job of explaining and delineating authority, obedience and God's law. Crystallized much in my mind. Thank you, professor.

Such a relief to hear this explanation. I am a doctor who encountered two archbishops who told me and others we had to obey government laws. The first case was a law permitting abortion up to 40 weeks full term for no reason, which had a clause compelling health professionals to arrange these abortions pased in 2009 in Victoria, Australia. I put a sign in my clinic saying I would not obey an unjust law and would not refer for abortion . The archbishop told me I was not allowed to say I was a Catholic, because the government could withdraw funding from Catholic institutions. Eventually I stopped my medical registration rather than comply. The second time in 2023 the government issued a law imposing a fine of $50, 000 or up to one year in prison if anyone says anything negative about gender affirming care, engages in hate speech (eg refuses to use pronouns). The archbishop issued a document instructing teachers in Catholic schools to go along with gender affirmation, pronouns, changes of clothing etc . He said he would leave it up to school principals to decide and said teachers must obey the law. In the language of synodality he said "we must walk with the trans person and the family". I wrote to him and said " you can walk with them as much as you like but this is child abuse" . I also stated that I treated adults with sex change surgery which has massive lifelong complications, and that these adults are saying that this should not be happening in children. I told him that other voices need to be heard ( medical professionals, parents, gays opposing this trans cult included).
I am glad you clarified Aquinas teaching on just following laws that go against God. In my case I was trying to prevent actual harm to the unborn, women, and of course these trans children.

Oh man! This was so good and much needed! Dr, please post a full treatment of this subject on obedience which you weren’t able to do here because of time, and address hypotheticals such as what a Catholic is to do if only certain options are available to receive the original Roman rites of the Church.

    Background:
At his ordination to the priesthood, a man kneels and places his hands into the hands of his bishop. This act signifies his obedience to and respect of the bishop and his successors. Through this symbolic action, the priest or deacon is ultimately placing his own will in the hands of God through the hands of the successor to the Apostles.
This promise of obedience implies - and requires - the exercise by a priest of two virtues: trust and love. It is as if he says, “I express my trust and love for God by surrendering my will to his through the mediation of my bishop. By trusting my bishop, I recognize that his decisions are made for my own good and the good of the church. In the same vein, I strive to embrace his decisions out of love for Christ and the church, putting their good above my own.”
While it may appear that obedience hinders a priest’s free will, it actually offers an occasion for him to conform his life more closely to Jesus Christ. When a priest offers himself obediently to his bishop, he imitates Jesus’ own obedience that he offered the Father in all his actions here on earth. He freely chose this out of love for his Father and us, and trust in his will.

If you attend a TLM Latin Mass today, it's because of Archbishop Lefebvre.

@@lovesrlady2 John Salza explains it in his interview with Matt Fradd entitled Schismatics, the SSPX and Sedes starting at about 41:30 and continuing for the next several minutes. Popes Paul and John Paul both worked hard to accommodate Lefebvre. In ‘88 it looked for a while that they had reconciled. John Paul was giving him a bishop but then Lefebvre backed down for some reason. I’m old enough that I remember all that happening. I loved Pope John Paul and realized how hard he tried to work things out. I figured that if Lefebvre couldn’t work with him then he must be a very stubborn self-willed man. Besides, we forget that Jesus is the head of the Church and if He wants us to have the Latin Mass He will find a way. You know Pope Paul VI never abrogated the Latin Mass and reportedly it’s due to him being a fan of Agatha Christie and her name being on a petition of prominent people pleading for the Latin Mass. We don’t know how the Holy Spirit will work but it will not be through defiance of the pope. Trust Him. We may have to suffer some but we must remain true to the Church. I know it’s difficult. I keep having to do more research as questions keep coming up but I find I’m learning more about the church through all the troubles. Again, I do recommend John Salza. There are so many different opinions and it’s hard to sort them out but I have found that Salza is so very knowledgeable about it all and explains it thoroughly. God bless.
