Kind of new to katana swords. I spent the summer of 1977 in Japan through an exchange program between 4H and a Japanese youth group called LABO.
Their whole thing was about learning English and western culture. Had a Japanese student stay with my family in the summer of 1976.
I stayed in Hiroshima with a family and they had a matched set of katana and wakizashi, very beautiful...mounted in gold hardware and white silk.
I just finished resurfacing a Chinese folded katana blade...got cut 8 times but I think it came out pretty good!
I very much enjoy your reviews and your "drunken reviews" are a gass!
instablaster.
Great review and enjoyed hanging out with you on Minnesota.
Thank you Thrand. Good to meet you in person. Lots of fun.
Whoa hey, I'm in Minnesota too lol
For a low end katana is moving through the tatami with ease. Looks like your not having to put much effort in with your cuts and it's sailing through. I'm impressed.
It does do that well.
I mean 500 is not pocket change but compared to other ones its a good price for what it is
Yeah, this one is the XL. On hanwei's website the width at guard is 1.44'' (which matches the one in the video). The elite is at 1.38''.
Thanks for doing what you do. You put out good content!
I have a Hanwei Musashi from 2001 and it’s got a black leather wrapped tsuka and the saya has falling pine needles on it. It’s a monster to , 30 inch blade and grip is 14 inches and the handle isn’t the axe handle and everything is tight, it’s never been used at all and even has the tag on it from when it was purchased. It’s never been displayed ever. Much nicer then this sword.
It depends on the price you pay for your katana if you buy cheap yes it’s kind of fall apart. If you pay £500 and above it will not become loose. Practical range are really good. Anything else above £500
You say that sword is heavy, and I know that so many swords in museums are so light, but I can't help but imagine that people were so much stronger during the time of swords than people are today. Even people who practice a lot of strength training generally do have the same kind of development that people would have then. There was so much more rope to tie, things to carry all day, digging and so many many more hand tools in a persons life. We type, push delicate buttons, and manufacture nothing. Also, we have such incredible razor blades, we just think that blades are so sharp all the time, but for most people in the time of swords, blades just weren't usually anywhere near as sharp or hard as ours are today, so when they would cut, it would mean pushing harder, needing more wrist balance, and cutting much much more often. ,,,,, I still can't stop from thinking that the delicate swords in our museums are also in part because of wartime value of heavier implements, and what that means for metal recycling. Our surviving pieces were mostly made for people who were not combatants. (european pieces), The Chinese farmers went running around with a sword that weighs like a modern axe. ,,,, wouldn't also the samurai see value in more cutting power??
Most of the museum and antique katanas are also quite a bit smaller than modern versions designed for larger people. The other thing to remember is that antique and museum katanas are lighter than they were when new. As the blade is polished, material is removed and a blade several hundred years old, could have been polished several hundred times and lose a few ounces of material and be thinner than it was when new. This particular blade is relatively heavy because of the blade profile. It's an extra wide blade to give it more heft and authority in cutting tatami mats. Many dedicated mat/bamboo blades use the wider and thicker blade profiles to make cutting easier. Those antique and relics in museums predating Edo period would have been built for combat. An overly heavy, off-balance sword is less effective overall for all of the other things you need to do with a sword other than just cutting. Parrying, feinting and thrusting are affected by a poorly balanced blade. Chinese farmers used the equivalent of hatchets because they were broke ass Chinese farmers who couldn't afford a proper sword. It was the same with European farmers that if they had a blade, it wasn't the best quality and probably had fairly poor balance but it sure as hell beat running out with farming implements or bare handed.
Cant wait to hear about your review for Motahara/Evolution blade!
Thanks Mathew for providing such an extensive video library. I've enjoyed it for years, but am now working through so many that l haven't seen before due to being "furloughed" from work for the foreseeable future. Ugh!
But one question on this specific video: What is the story on the "short and stubby" at the top of the rack of katanas? Looks like the sword equivalent of a sawed off shotgun, lol! What katana is it? How did it break (assuming you didn't actually saw it off....!)
Please share the details when you have a chance! 😷👍
I think that is the musashi 1045 $50 sword. I broke it in a review video.
First!
And btw, I could slice up my dreams and expectations with that katana
So many of those swords are clones. I can't have too many clone swords. Katanas all look alike. Longswords have different blades, different guards, different pommels. And you can't false edge cut, half-sword or pommel strike with a katana.
Japanese swords come in a wide variety of styles and types. In olden times, there were nearly as many sword making styles as there were sword combat styles (which were very numerous then.) Blades can have different lengths, different thicknesses, different width, different grind for the tip, different blade geometry and even different fittings. There are also some rare blade types which have a sharpened false edge that can cut. Kenjutsu does have half-swording, it's just not shown in movies very much but you do see it every one in a while. You just don't really see katana being flipped around and murder stroking people but there are attacks with butt of the grip usually used in combination with other strikes or if someone tries to get in too close to strike with the blade.
Nice double on the pool noodle!
Excited to see that motohara review....
Eric Husayn 2nd the Motohara review
You do well wielding this Hanwei!!
Finally bit the bullet and ordered a Hanwei....practical xl...I figure its a necessity for a Katana collection...gonna do a video on it with Tatami and other crazy shit...thanks for the 411 on them...
Anyone know what happened to Jon Andresen's channel? It too was very informative
Does the phrase “buy once cry one” apply to katanas? Is it worth investing in one high end katana for use instead of buying multiple cheaper ones that break eventually? Or is it inevitable for a beginner to break them
depends on all of the things and reasons.. Buy what you can comfortably afford to use and loose. If you are intent on cutting things, you will inevitably diminish the sword. As you improve, you come to appreciate a better tool. What makes the tool better also changes.
If you could only have one Katana out of all the ones you've used, which one would you pick?
Also I am currently looking to buy Katana. I was considering getting a katana from Bugei, or Hanwei. I've also been looking at Dragon Kings sea Wave katana, but it's hard knowing which one is going to be worth the price. I want to get a Raptor for practice cutting, but I also want something higher quality for myself that I know can cut well, and be for "battle" as you said. Any you recommend?
Would need more context.. For a duel, a battle field, a tatami cutting competition, iaido, for an investment,... all have different answered.
@@Matthew_Jensen I see. The original question was if had to pick one that was a great all around Katana. But how about just these two categories then, which one would you choose for a battlefield? And which one for a duel?
Duel, would likely depend again on opponent and what would provide an advantage. As a general concept though, I would favor something light that would help me give light harassing blows. I don't move all that quick, so I would want something to help me speed wise. Light, lively, and sharp as I could get it. Hanwei shinto or orchid would be the production pieces that come to mind. If I went with a custom maker like JKOO or SoN, then something similar in shape but maybe a bit longer. In this case the sword only needs to hold up for one fight. I could give two shits about edge retention or how well it would hold up after hours of sustained hard use. I would be looking for something sharp enough to cut through cloth and agile enough to go for quick wrist cuts.
Battle, I would want something that could be used defensively. Ronin Dojo Pro, Bugei Samruai, Citadel Bamboo.. something stouter without being clubish. The idea would be to hold up for lots of bad strikes, lots of poll arm chops.. Something forgiving..
Awesome x-mas lights on katana. I'm gonna do it too!!!
In a nutshell….you look like Seth Macfarlane, but can you do the character voices. Lol. Great videos.
I love the Hanwei 6000 series. I just can’t bring myself to spend over $600 yet I do pick up enough cheap ones that’d dominate 600 easy. My last dissatisfied purchase was a Marto MT-328. Somewhat of an odd edge. Almost two different degrees per side.
Any experience with that? In a nutshell…keep up the great job
I can't do the voices well..
I think the elite has T10 steel whereas the MXL has 1566? I could be wrong. 1566 is used on the pxl and ppxl i do believe.
What you think of mushasi tensai it is around 350.00. I have good selection of knifes and good understanding of steels but this will be my first sword. I am sure I will slice a few bottles or watermelon. But mainly just to store and show.
Awesome info, I just received a Hanwei Musashi and I can't tell if it's an Elite or an XL either... if you ever figure out a good way to tell them apart let me know!!
@FM LR in addition they state that as they are handforged each item may have slight variations so I can't tell from measurements either XD because as you point out they are so similar.... based on how it feels I am leaning towards the one I have being the XL. but that is merely an educated guess
Hi Mat where do you get your tatami from please? Thanks for all the good katana videos for us western samurai want to be's.
I get them from folks at the toyama dojo. I think they import them or at least buy a lot of them.
I really only work with katana sites that allow you to FULLY customize a katana from top to bottom, I don't really care for those high end sites where you can only buy whatever they just have on display, as good of options as those sites may very well be, I just prefer full, top to bottom customization, I'm not into how the traditional samurai sword looks, if you can point me in the direction of some sites like that, it would be great 😁😅👌🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Swords of Northshire and Jkoo / Sino sword are the two that come to mind. I am sure there are others.
@@Matthew_Jensen hey, thanks for the recommendation for sinoswords, although, to be honest, I was already well aware of both of those sites, but you recommending sinoswords pushed me to look into them a little farther than I originally did, they sound like they're truly worth giving a chance 👍🏾👍🏾 especially based from other youtube testimonies
I cant stop looking at the Citadel...
"There's an attempt at a yokote and kissaki." Well said. Lol. Pretty much what I think about 90% of production swords. Too bad it's so hard to get a nice kissaki. Have you looked at the swords on aliexpress? There's a lot of different stuff there, and **some** of the blades don't look half bad, but a lot of the fittings are very crap or "Chinesey". Great review as always :)
I have not looked on Ali express. I am not really seeking new vendors to try. I have a pile of reviews to get out and a few folks that have provided review samples. I don't look for new vendors very often.
@@Matthew_Jensen That makes sense. Probably a better business to go with more stable and reliable vendors.
Anyone have any opinions on Dynasty Forge? I’m really leaning towards a Bushi silver dragon 29in model. Bo hi or not bo hi?
Wich katana should I buy for a beginner
Interesting vid dude. Do you do a lot of tattami cutting? Your form looks a little off, striking with a step and engaging your hips in one motion works best
It is more than a little off. I have a long way to go before I am any good at it. That said, in some cases I am dragging the point, or limp wristing the swing to get a better idea of how much work the sword will do for you. In general I am trying to cut with some type of control and at a 45 degree angle, just failing at that really hard.
@@Matthew_Jensen have you maybe reached out to do some kendo classes or maybe some hema clubs? Beginners classes are pretty cheap and you can learn all about proper cutting mechanics or at least fundamentals pretty smoothly.
I currently attend a dojo that teaches Toyama Ryu. They do a lot of cutting, I just lack skill. I have been training in that art for over a year.. maybe two at this point. Just not great at it.
@@kieranlock3070 condescending prick
DARTH VAPER how They are just having a “conversation” of sorts
The wide blade looks bad ass I like the hibachi but the tsukas look like crap to me.
....what's the sword on the top of the shelf? And what happened to it?
$50 Musashi katana from a destructive review
@@Matthew_Jensen I had a Practical Plus from Hanwei snap in two places simultaneously recently. Freaking weird.
It’s tape
The saya Horn fit in looks so pure never saw that haha ....china greets ......ppfffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff
What websites are best for sword purchasing now days?
Kult of Athena is pretty good.
@@Matthew_Jensen Thank you!
I appreciate your videos but after watching I don't have faith in buying anything
ITS TAPE
give me that swords
Really someone still review these piece of junks? Is not for cutting, is not good for iaido, is just good to keep in a wall to get dust......
I have found them to be rather fun to cut with and functional for iaido. I think it is pretty far from a wall hanger.
@@Matthew_Jensen Exactly how many cuts did you performed and how many years did you practice? This piece of shit is terrible balance, but this can be good in order to train your strength. The cutting properties are enough for make a video in you tube, but also Cold Steel make cutting test videos...... And I said everything...... The steel is something that yes is high carbon, but is done with a terrible quenching procedure, the edge is really fragile and the mechanical properties are really far from any kind of sword. Not mention the price / quality of any Hanwey in this planer. Disaster, and the worst thing they say are for practical use. I've used an Hanwei practical plus "katana" for 5 years in iaido, so just kata. The tsuka ito stand just 1 year and half before I was forced to change it. After 5 years problems on the handle, I've disassembled the handle, and just imagine my surprise when I figured our that the handle was GLUED. Just a funcking monkey can glue an handle of a iaito. I don't want to mention any other sword they produce, they say are for sparring, I say is for murdering someone during a sparring. Hanwei is one of the worst brand where you can waste money. I had 2 hanwei in my life, one katana of 269 euros, one 2 handed sword at 310...... Never again in my life. Now I practice with a Yarinohanzo, that is not great either but with a more honest price and a better construction and balance. Hanwei has to disappear from the market, are criminal, not swords meker.
Its such a cheap quality and poor Quality why u are not trying swords from Katanzo .....aaaa wait u are in USandAAAAA haha .............sry
