I love how you show your mistakes and then to watch you plow through it!! It gives me so much more confidence to accept mine and attempt to do the same!! Thanks!!
I have an army of Firstborn Imperial Fists still waiting to be painted, but I wanted them to look battle-hardened and like they've been fighting in muck and grime for the last decade without reinforcements. I was too afraid to start, but I really like how you did that Imperial Fist model, so I'm definitely going to try and follow the steps in this video. It's been extremely helpful to watch. Thank you!
If you want to speed up the process use an oil wash instead of the Garaghaks Sewer contrast (3/4 raw sienna + 1/4 black semi transparent and add 2x the amount of mineral spirit) and you clean the wash after 8-6h with mineral spirit on cotton swab. Then let it dry 24-48h. And just some edge lightning to finish.
New Contrast paints look really cool. Please just use Streaking Grime or a burnt umber oil wash if you want to get a result like the Garaghak's Sewer wash though, there's much less danger of ruining your model because it dried too fast or left tide marks.
Nice to see how you paint tabletop compared to display and are happy with a few steps that look good. Instagram has warped people's minds regarding table top standard.
Loved it! Just building my HH army now and will try your range of approach’s for imperial fists. Potential this approach using the contrasts with an oil wash.
Was just skimming the video, and mostly just listening, and in my head, this turned into a boxing match. (Was making some bases for a Mordheim Possessed Warband). "And at the bottom right corner, we haaaaaave yeriel yellow! And in the top left corner we haaaaave German grey!"😅
I was about to follow the latest GW guide but might hold out for this new contrast paint. I’ve already got a can of Zandri dust for the base, will this still be worth using? I do like a darker finish if that’s the effect it will have.
Your pot lids are caking up on the inside of the rim preventing them from sealing up. I use a broken dental pick to remove the caked paint from the inside of the lid’s ring thus allowing the pot to be properly sealed up.
Contrast has been a niche use case in my arsenal. One hundred percent yellow azo ink with a little matte varnish will get you here over a based brown with a few passes of white ink and brown and then white ink and at half the price. For a whole army box having a perfect color right there is attractive if you're color matching, and a few of the contrast paints are super good for stuff like starting skin with verdaccio (Marco taught that using plaguebearers flesh) or some of the browns make a really good start and glaze for nmm gold. But it's all up to what a painter like. I'm in the inks category with you but if I was gonna do a whole space marine thing I'd probably grab a bottle of contrast to airbrush with them for ease of setting up the sketch on everything.
Agreed. The yellow looks too similar to a base common yellow for it to be worth the price. Also; I fell like It's just too "situational" to be worth using by itself.
Have you considered trying Army Painter's Speed Paint for the dingying up stage? As Speed Paint has issues reactivating afterwards, maybe you could use that aspect of the paint to stretch out your work time during the clean up stage?
It would have been great if you could have made a video on how the majority of people will be using this paint. The purpose of contrast paint is for beginners who probably dont have access to an airbrush etc. Doing a video with just a white undercoat would have been a lot more informative for people deciding whether or not to use this paint.
I really like this new yellow contrast paint, seems to make painting Imperial Fists a lot more easy. And one more thing, are thos Tartaros terminators from the old GW web exclusive box? Because i'd like to add some to the Cataphractii ones from the new Heresy box, but i can't find them anywhere to buy. Fingers crossed they're just getting repackaged like the Mk IV and III tac squads.
Have you had a chance to play around with the rating grime one? It looks similar to the one you used by mistake but more translucent from the pictures I've seen but hard to tell. Thought it might be useful to make a dirty gold colour on the black legion box art
For me, the worst part of making mistakes is the cost of paint... Other than the damage inflicted on your wallet, there isn't a mistake that can't be undone when it comes to painting. So don't let yourself be discouraged by your shortcomings. Failure is the best teacher!
I get you're trying to show off the Contrast paints but man... I have no clue why someone would do that rather than oils. I feel like you put about five dollars of Contrast paint/medium on the model.
I have asthma and can't use solvent based paints, so I suppose he's showing an alternative for people like me or say younger kids who aren't allowed solvents. I'm pretty sure he said something to this effect in his last video.
Really interesting thank you for this tutorial and the colour test. Do you think that you would achieve the same effect with an oil wash and white spirit that you achieved with Garahak's Sewer and contrast medium?
Darker colours that move closer to black tend not to be transparent because black is the absence of light or colour. The washes like Nuln Oil tend to be very thin in pigment density in order to not obscure detail and maintain the vibrancy of the colour they are painted over.
Protip: make a nice wash with spirits and burnt umber oil paint, slather it everywhere and then after it's well dry, take some makeup sponges dipped lightly in spirits and just wipe off the wash, comes off clean leaving a nice yellow under without removing the nice sunk in wash from the crevices, works even better if you use gloss varnish on the model before washing and wiping. You'll find the wash actually flows much better over varnish too! Saves a mint on spirits to boot
got a question for you, I see 2 main methods for undershade for yellow: one is yours like - so brown undershade and second one is using some pink/violet undershade. Can you tell me difference here and why are you using brown and not pink/violet?
I love these Contrast-based Marine schemes but have The Fear™ when it comes to using the same scheme on everything else, such as vehicles. Do they scale up (generally contrast is blotchy on vehicles) or so you cook up a different, matching scheme without Contrast for them?
You could use either, just make sure to thin them first. I use contrast paints over base paints as an airbrushed glaze, and it get consistently good results.
I hate to be critical of these videos as they are of such a high standard, but I feel like we've seen (more or less) the same tutorial four times now. I think I'd feel more inclined to support you if you put out some guides on the other legions using these techniques. I think the Patreon supporters are getting a raw deal as the last exclusive content we had was the Avatar, and that was back in April. Everything since then has been available for free on UA-cam.
It can be hard to see all the content on Patreon - but Richards website mirrors it : www.richardgraycreations.com/allvideos/ the entire back catalogue and a lot of new stuff from after April is on Patreon.
@@moassaniteape3265 From what I can tell, the only video uploaded by Richard exclusively to Patreon since April is his thoughts regarding his Loonboss GD entry. Everything else has been made public on UA-cam.
I for one love all the IF videos because it shows many different techniques of achieving similar results in the final model (but not identical results).
Good paint job, but definitely above my level of attainment lol. Video was more entertainment for me than anything cus my stuff ain't gonna look like that
Love the straight and forward approach on the videos. Dont ever go "full youtube", such a joy to watch this!
Fucking this a thousand times over. So refreshing to not have another "Genocide that like button"-clone.
I love how you show your mistakes and then to watch you plow through it!! It gives me so much more confidence to accept mine and attempt to do the same!! Thanks!!

Brilliant paintjob and really nice tutorial!
Thanks for posting this! Those new yellows look fantastic! Time to revisit my IF army
7:32 is the perfect look I would love to have on Grimdark Imp Fists. Funny how mistakes in this hobby can lead up to fantastic results. :D
...and easy to do!
Nice to see how you paint tabletop compared to display and are happy with a few steps that look good. Instagram has warped people's minds regarding table top standard.
It certainly has! It would be interesting to see some of those tabletop pieces in real life :D
Thanks for sharing your learnings with the new paints. This will save us normies some trial and error.
Loved it! Just building my HH army now and will try your range of approach’s for imperial fists. Potential this approach using the contrasts with an oil wash.
Damn, that looks so good..
The bases are brilliant.

"And at the bottom right corner, we haaaaaave yeriel yellow!

Looks like a great method would love to see on a vehicle
Mk6 death guard😎 can’t wait
And as normal amazing painting 👍
... fantastic!
Best painting channel atm!
Another Great vid sir , I personally would love to see you do a Sons Mini .
Masterclass.
your channel is killer my dude, keep it up!
you're my hero.

Would love to see you paint a seraphon model using the new green paints
Personally I really like the simple bases, it makes the model standout
I'm still torn on this. Why not just use a yellow ink?
Contrast has been a niche use case in my arsenal. Hi. Love your work. Could you make a salamanders video please?
Loving it (I dont even do 40k / 30k stuff)
We gotta see you do a world eater. Please do some 30k or 40k world eaters?
I really like this new yellow contrast paint, seems to make painting Imperial Fists a lot more easy.

They're all over eBay for $40-$50 along with the tactical squads too!
Nice video I love the work of you. But I have a question about contrast paint. Can you dilute the paint with water or must you use contrast medium.
Have you had a chance to play around with the rating grime one? It looks similar to the one you used by mistake but more translucent from the pictures I've seen but hard to tell. Thought it might be useful to make a dirty gold colour on the black legion box art
Did you need to thin the contrast paint in the air brush?
I always thought Iyanden Yellow was odd for Imp Fists.
For me, the worst part of making mistakes is the cost of paint...
Other than the damage inflicted on your wallet, there isn't a mistake that can't be undone when it comes to painting. So don't let yourself be discouraged by your shortcomings. Failure is the best teacher!
Hey I was just wondering if you could do a tutorial on sons of Horus
Do you thin down contrasts for airbrush?
I get you're trying to show off the Contrast paints but man... I have no clue why someone would do that rather than oils. I feel like you put about five dollars of Contrast paint/medium on the model.
I have asthma and can't use solvent based paints, so I suppose he's showing an alternative for people like me or say younger kids who aren't allowed solvents. I'm pretty sure he said something to this effect in his last video.
@@ste022 that's absolutely fair.
Really interesting thank you for this tutorial and the colour test.
Do you think that you would achieve the same effect with an oil wash and white spirit that you achieved with Garahak's Sewer and contrast medium?
Yes, definitely
have any tips for getting contrast paints to flow well through the airbrush?
Darker colours that move closer to black tend not to be transparent because black is the absence of light or colour. The washes like Nuln Oil tend to be very thin in pigment density in order to not obscure detail and maintain the vibrancy of the colour they are painted over.

Are you just running the contrast thru your airbrush or what did you use to thin it down
Bonjour peut-on faire le même procéder sans utiliser le contraste impérial fist est plutôt le yriel yellw très dilué merci
got a question for you, I see 2 main methods for undershade for yellow: one is yours like - so brown undershade and second one is using some pink/violet undershade. Can you tell me difference here and why are you using brown and not pink/violet?
One looks earthier, the other one pops orange. Surely a matter of preference.
When do these new paints become available?
What's the point of contrast paint with an airbrush?
Nice method but to paint an army like that would cost a fortune in contrast paint.
Tartaros Termies are best termies!
Why didn't you paint over a white primer ?
Free shadows. Black undercoats are much more forgiving too.
What are these terminators?
I love these Contrast-based Marine schemes but have The Fear™ when it comes to using the same scheme on everything else, such as vehicles. Do they scale up (generally contrast is blotchy on vehicles) or so you cook up a different, matching scheme without Contrast for them?
Use an airbrush for vehicles, it makes even coverage much easier and prevents pooling.
@@TheBaronVSP But still using the same contract paints, or similar traditional paints?
You could use either, just make sure to thin them first. I use contrast paints over base paints as an airbrushed glaze, and it get consistently good results.
Seems in the video you were using the sewer colour
:O

IMO these new 'contrast' paints (some of wich dont even create any constrast, at all) are nothing but glorified inks
