- Auckland, New Zealand was one of the first places in the world to ring in 2021, with a dazzling fireworks display and a light show from its iconic Sky Tower and harbour.
Revellers on the waterfront watched the five-minute show with brightly coloured fireworks and laser lighting shooting into the night sky over the city's harbour.
While many countries restricted gatherings and cancelled their traditional New Year celebrations due to the coronavirus pandemic, Auckland's residents were able to ring in the new year to watch the show in person. New Zealand currently has 55 active cases.

New Zealand isn't perfect but it's not a bad country to live in. There's a lot of gun crime, mainly in our major cities. I live in a city with a population of about 90,000 people. Which in bigger countries like the US, would be considered a large town or suburb.

This is what we show the kids before the Sydney Fireworks because it's a much much smaller one and much less overwhelming and exciting. Then they can go to bed not overly excited. In fact, they fall asleep 2 minutes into the display.

There is a lot of public scrutiny on excessive and expensive fireworks in NZ. Its a no win situation for the organisers. Last night's firework display is about the same as every other years.
