I hated that MotionVFX when subscription with their Cinestudio bundle. Now they came out with Design Studio and they want $709/yr for the bundle if pay annually 😢
Great video! Random question: how do you get your background so dark, while lighting yourself well? Is it just honeycomb grids on your softbox? Or any other techniques? I love the dark shadows in your background.
Thanks! I use a dark grey background and yes, I lit myself using a honeycomb on a large chimera on a COB source light which directs the soft light. This way, the background doesn't get much spill. I also used a hard kicker light hung from the ceiling grid plus a background light... a RGB 2:1 for a light purple shine on the grey background. Nino
Would be nice to see a head to head comparison! I've been using Resolve for a decade and Magic Mask has it's uses - it's very powerful when configured right. But it's definitely true that this implementation is much more straight forward. There are dozens of attributes to configure in DaVinci (most of the time not necessary).
I don't see it being better at all, except that it can track an object that leaves the screen and come back. Resolve also gives you a lot of options, to refine the selection.
Magnetic mask is a great new feature without having to manually rotoscoping; until Magnetic Mask was released; I resorted to mRotoAI for 'automated' masking. Now, if Apple could develop a mTracker equivalent that would be great!
We surely hope they'll integrate this technology in different ways. In theory, this could be available for any video in your Photos app on iPhone. Nino
OMG!😹I am experiencing feelings of surprise and happiness. Rotoscoping is the backbone of post production. Magnetic Mask rotoscoping seems good enough to take the grunt work out of a whole lot of visual effects and colour effects and grading - and title effects. 'Gosh we're all real impressed down here'
Nice to hear from post production professionals. I might be leaving a total overview of the other tools available for this type of work but everyone seems to be just as astonished by its capability as me. Nino
Very nice smooth exciting review. I can’t wait to mess around with the magnetic mask this afternoon - albeit on M1 mini 16GB. Color smoothing/tweaking looks great too. I have a year old interview with a crap background - looks like that’s going away. 😊
Hello, can you help me with something? When I try to use the magnetic mask the option that appears ia a “camera” not a “pencil” to apply on the areas that I want on the video. Do you know why this happens? Thanks a lot!
It works great! I just tried it by making a mask and then adding blur onto a duplicate of the footage. You can adjust the feature and blur settings to make it look more natural
That's what Portrait mode is on iPhone and Facetime. (Granted, it may be a more primitive iteration.) I tested Continuity Camera to use an iPhone as a wireless camera recording into Quicktime on a Mac. With Portrait mode on, but set to a minimum, it created a very convincing-looking, larger format image
This is a generation better than davinci magic mask because in resolve the moment the object leaves the frame a little bit, it fucks up, not even talking about it disappearing and coming back, hopefully resolve gets good like this
I have found it does not work as well on some object. I have a video of a paddlewheel boat at a dock. I am flying my drone around the boat. I tried applying a magnetic mask to it and it worked but very poorly. As the boat turned in the video it lost the mask, did not maintain the mask etc. Not sure why it did not work as well as the mask on the drone in your video. I have tried it on other, more static, objects and it is fine. But for some reason, as the drone moves around the paddlewheel boat it fails. I can correct it manually and get a good mask. But that is very very tedious.
Very hard to judge without seeing the footage but I'm guessing there might be a lot of sunlight reflecting on the paddlewheel at some point, which makes it hard to track?
@@CineD Thanks for the reply. I will send you a link to the entire video if you wish to look at it. I can send you a copy of some of the video if you wish to try. ua-cam.com/video/twjdCgAU1yE/v-deo.html. I tried it on 0:17 to approx 0:27. I did it on a clip in Final Cut so no transitions etc were in the video I was trying it on. If you are really curious I can trim the clip down and send you a link to where you could get it. Original footage is 2.1 Gb in size. I then tried it on a later part of the video with the boat coming straight at me and still results where not good. It seemed to work fine on objects without all the various shading as found on the boat.
Awesome ! I quit Apple 8 years ago but can't wait to put my hands on a new M4 computer (maybe the mini) and use this awesome FCPX app that makes editing a real PLEASURE (vs Premiere which is a pain in the ass and not ergonomic at all imo). This magnetic mask remembers me Mocha pro on AE. Except that when the subject fully left the frame it doesn't recognized it back when it comes again in the frame.
Yeah so that really boggled my mind... that stuff can leave the frame, come back in again and be recognized again. 8 years ago... well yes their hardware made such big leaps in the meantime with the M chips. We've replaced 7 Macs at the office, they're all M Macs now and we never looked back. Only using some older Thunderbolt RAIDs seems to be a problem. Nino
This is actually much better than I would have expected 🤯
Yep. Totally.
This is probably the open source Depth Pro model they released earlier last month. Glad to see it works well in production
Man you're amazing. Best review so far! Thank you again!
I appreciate that! Nino
Finally no need to pay monthly for mroto ai
that's now completely unneccessary. Awesome and also skipping the Design Studio. What thieves.
Just immediately canceled my subscription!
@@psysword if fcp brings 3d tracking would be amazing

It’s also much faster to analyze than mRoto AI. I also cancelled my subscription.

Thanks for giving us a detailed and easy to understand demo of the magnetic mask.
Glad it was helpful! Nino
This reminds me of the magic mask in Davnici. It seems like Apple's algorithm is as lot more refined though

@akyhne Apple is a master at marketing. Blackmagic not that much! BM appeals to professionals and Apple to kiddos.

Dumb question, will my projects from FCPX 10.8 or whatever the last version work in 11?
yes, I installed the Final Cut 11 and all my projects and effects still work great
Yep they just upgrade but as usual you can't go back
Always loved fcp so this is an amazing addition!
Agreed!

Yeah one thing I didn't try yet is faking a shallower depth of field in the background. Totally makes sense for that. Nino

This is amazing. Thanks for this video. I hope apple keeps the updates going because we still miss some stuff other edtiting software have.
I hope so too! It's time to catch up in some other areas too.
Could you do this with footage shot on a phone for example to create shallow depth of field. Keep the subject in focus and blur the background?
Yes

Yes absolutely, sounds like a great idea. I'll try that. Nino

That's fucking insane. Also, I didn't know blackmagic was owned by apple. Nice video
? it's not
And never will be.

But it's not more accurate, and Resolve has a lot of refining tools.
I found that aspect most aspect most surprising too!
I feel like Apple could fix a lot of little things in FC by merging in some select Motion concepts and features.
why would you ever add the aged film effect before applying the magnetic mask tho
Have you tested your Frame io extension for this version?
No not yet.
Do you think it's better than adobe premier pro or after effects?

Well spotted!! Even better

DaVinci Resolve has had Magic Mask that work the same way.
But not as well as this :)

just pay someone to roto lol come on guys
