As someone who's not been playing monster hunter games for a long time and picking up this game after years, this was incredibly helpful for me. Thank you!
They may have removed it in 4, but in previous games, defeating melynx and felyne enemies would have a chance for them to drop EZ shock traps, the supply type, therefore you actually have a chance to complete a capture even if you wasted your trap.
this is still true, I still beat them up for a small chance of netting me a free trap.....but it's still around just don't count on getting one for sure....
You should talk about the perception skill (nerscylla armor for example), that lets you see when the monster is ready to capture (The icon on the map starts blinking, if the monster is paintballed)... Btw love your videos :)
It's funny you should say that, I was originally going to add that to this tutorial, but then decided I wanted to make this an absolute basics, so that way people would learn to capture without armour skills, but that is a very good point. I'll probably cover that when I do my video on armour skills :)
+own0805 volcano egg quests are impossible really, I was managing to get to area 1 from 9 and a konchu rolled at me right as I was about climbing the wall
capturing that velociraptor type monster is just ridiculous. the controls on 3ds make it real pain. yea, the egg quests are just capcom trolling everyone.
As a note. Nerscylla Armour has a skill which make a monster dot flash blue on the map (If you painted it) which is an indication that the monster is ready for capture.
Just a note, for early game, use the Nerscylla set as this has Capture Guru on it. Capture guru will make the Mini-Map icon flash white if the monster is weak enough to be captured. Note this only works on monsters that are effected with Paintballs as far as I know, but the Psychic skill might allow it as well
Oh wow, that's actually easier than what I was expecting. I was avoiding that first capture quest for a long time and just went on expeditions, but then I wanted to finish the plot. Thanks!
I'd love a tutorial on how to use meat. May it be stun, poison, etc. I've been playing since Monster Hunter Freedom on PSP, every available game in europe, but NEVER used it. And I think that's quite a waste. Although I could watch other tutorials, I like yours the most. I'd appreciate it.
I'd sure like a tutorial on meat as well.....I can never get it to work and I may be going about it all wrong......thanks!! I too like your videos best.....but don't want to have your babies =p lmfao!!
I don't think it's very difficult to figure out honestly. It's just not very useful. It really only works when they're hungry, and the time spent placing it might be better used just attacking it while it's just standing there drooling. It can definitely be used to lure a monster into a trap though, but odds are it's going to run straight at you at some point anyways, so you can literally just stand behind the trap.
i'm not sure how well this tactic works for most hunters but I often will place meat in a nearby area of in the area i'm in because a monster will often look for food when it is very weak and sometimes goes for the meat you place down.
One nice piece of capture-related information I just learned is that if you trap and tranq a monster and it turns out that it was not weakened enough after all, you still have a chance to capture it without having wasted those traps and tranq bombs: If you attack it and deal enough damage to bring it to its capturable state before it can break out of the trap, it will fall asleep and you'll have captured it after all.
Thanks For This Video! I almost quit playing monster hunter because of 2 reasons: Royal Ludroth,And The Gypceros Project quest.Your Videos help me so much!
This. This is what I needed to see. Every other person I'd asked, questions posted, and no one could tell me what to do. 'Just jump on it's back, and wear it down.' Well, after 3 days of trying to figure out HOW to jump on a monster's back, i still didn't know what to do about trapping a monster. Tranq bombs? Yea... didn't know about those, nor about weakening a monster. I thought it was all about just... killing it. No wonder I couldn't get past those quests. And no one thought this might need to be explained in game...? Or are they going on the idea that it's part 4, we should all know by this point? Casue this is actually my first MH game. :P In any case, thanks for this video. Now I can take another shot at the Poogie King and see if I can get it this time.
Fait Kitsune If you have the Perception Skill gemmed up (Ten Skill points), a painted monster will flash if they are ready to capture. If you're playing in Multiplayer, having Perception will make you very helpful, as you can pinpoint the exact moment a monster is ready for capping. Alternately, having a Support Palico will also tell you when a monster is ready for capture.
Thank you kindly for this video, I have been having some serious issues with the capture and didn't know I would actually need to use 2 trank bombs on it.
I love your video, it's basic enough to be able to capture the weaker monsters without delving into complex mechanics that people should learn on their own later on. I am having a lot of difficulty capturing a Gypceros for a guild quest. I have wasted so many traps and tranqs on this quest, and I always have to end it with the subquest. The first time, I used a trap too early, I figured that out. The second time, I ended up killing it because it never showed any signs of injury. Not even a broken body part. Now I'm nervous about accidentally killing it. The last three times, though, I managed to get it to the point of injury and trapped it. I threw two tranqs, but nothing happened, and the monster broke free. I did more damage, trapped it again, and threw two more tranqs. Still nothing. I thought maybe some tougher monsters require more tranqs, so I threw them all. Monster broke free and I was out of everything. This has happened three times already. What am I doing wrong? Your tutorial of capture basics does not help with this particular monster for some reason. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Jacob Venable Did you see it limp? Merely breaking parts off is not enough to make it capturable. Seeing the limp is the only way to be certain that it is within capture range without certain skills. Also the gypceros specifically is immune to shock traps if you didn't know already.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the use of Tranquilizer Shot for the BowGuns or tips for luring monsters onto traps (field horns, using a high aggro weapon like HH or bowgun, maybe or maybe not the taunt emote). This is a good guide, despite that though!
What are your thoughts on trap bombing? Is it worth it? Is it worth doing if you don't use sleep weapons? Should I get my palicoes to do it? Do the bombs go off automatically when they're in the middle of the trap, or do you still need to hit them?
Dude thanks a lot for the tutorial , I've always had this confusion about which trap can be used to trap it and what does the drugged meat is used for, btw, what kind of armor did you had during this video? I know it's the Gore Magala Armor but it seems different from the one I have, especially with that red glowing thing that was happening on your avatar's right arm
You never have to just fail a quest. Simply accomplish the subquest task and "End Via the Subquest" so you can at the very least keep everything you gathered during the quest!
Another tip for trapping, if you throw a tranq bomb at the monster anytime wether it be weak or not when it's not in a trap, it counts as one so when you do trap it, you can just throw one tranq and bam quest finished
An even better tip in my opinion if you waste your traps is to just retire from the quest in which you will lose everything you picked up, but also returns you your traps!
Please cover How to hunt type of tutorial with how to know a monster's weaknesses and which type of damage is effective against it or where to hit it and so on. PLS! TY!
Could I combine 2 items to make a Tranq Bomb? and what items do i need to make a Pitfall trap? i got the shock traps in my combo list. i need dem pitfall traps doe.
Step 1-weaken until it limps, step 2- place Sleep Bait, step 3-place trap where the bait is, step 4- use two Tranquilizer Bombs. Lightning Bug + Trap Tool = Shock Trap. Ivy + Spider Web = Net. Then, Net + Trap Tool = Pitfall Trap. Tranquilizer + Bomb Casing = Tranquilizer Bomb. Sleep Herb + Raw Meat = Sleep Bait.
If the monster is in the trap can you just hit Y to throw the bomb down in front of you if you're right next to it, or do you have to throw it forward for it to be effective?
So long as it makes contact with the monster - either the bomb or the smoke it emits, then you're fine. If you're going to throw it straight down, just make sure you're next to the monster.
I really fucking hate how you can only bring one trap of your own. Yeah, you can bring one pitfall and one shock (if the monster allows it), plus the one you usually get from the supply box, but it's still incredibly annoying. I understand it's probably to prevent people from infinitely trapping a monster until it's dead, but why not just make it so they get out of the traps much faster after being trapped a lot? In fact, I believe they already do that, so what's the point in limiting you to just 1?
Hey man great video. Screwed up once. Watched this vid. Now I'm capturing like I was be the very best that there ever was... lol But I have one question. What armor do you hav ed on and why does it have that purple fog around it??
Matt Garcia I'm not sure of the actual list, but I'd imagine some of the ones Japan has - like Link, Samus, maybe Megaman? I'll make a video when I know more :)
It depends - if you've already placed a trap, then it means you can't place another one will it's either used, or despawned. Alternatively, if you're in one of those areas where you're standing on top of spider webs, you can't place traps on that type of floor.
Lion Peach You can use the sleep weapon to catch the monster depending on the monster's resistance to sleep. You can use the weapon but its advisable to use a tranq bomb instead.
do you have to do anything specific to use a trap? for some reason there's always red x over my traps when I try to select one it doesn't let me. and yes my weapon is sheathed lol
What's your advice on setting a trap and the monster moving to another area without setting it off? Currently I would just wait for the trap to expire so I can set another trap, and try to not hit the monster too much to the point of killing it :/
If you have another trap, that's definitely the best thing to do - if you don't have a spare trap, then you have to just kill it, or hope it returns before the trap expires.
***** Thanks for the reply. From your experience, do you think a monster is always ready to be captured when it goes limping off to sleep? And is it harder to capture monsters that are in rage mode? Sorry for all the questions...
SilverHawk422 Yeah, provided it's limping it's always ready to capture. And it can be harder, depending on the monster. Some monsters can destroy the trap in rage mode, and some (like Gypceros) will walk over it.
bunnymech Yeah, some monsters are immune to certain traps, and some have ways out of them as well. Seltas queen can fly out of a Pitfall trap, and Jinogre can absorb the shock from a shock trap.
Pixelsmedia4 | SpeedARTs Little late, but you don't have to do every quest to rank up. Certain quests will unlock an urgent quest that takes you to the next rank. Here's a link listing them all: www.gameskinny.com/i0uks/monster-hunter-4-ultimate-guide-how-to-raise-hunter-rank
I feel like I'm the only one who likes capturing monsters. For me it's quite an easy thing to do as long as I'm not being dumb with it. But egg quests, THOSE are something I LOATHHHHH!!!
Unless you have edited it out, one of your panels on bottom screen will have a monster icon (usually gray with "Unseen" on it) that will show the icon of the monster(s) on the map that you have encountered. Simply press this once you have spotted the monster and it will put a target over the icon. Now any time you tap the L button your camera will swing around and point at the monster if it is in your area. But it does not keep track of the monster if it moves, there is no true lock-on cam in this game. You must tap the L button again any time the monster moves around to refocus the camera on where the monster currently is. Also quickly double tapping the L button makes the camera turn to where your character is facing as it normally would.
I was just trying to capture a Gypseros for the first time and it stood RIGHT ON TOP of my shock trap.... several times.... it never went off..... Not to mention, when it moves away RIGHT when I put a trap down, you can lay another trap till that one despawns.... like there should be a way to destoy or disarm the trap in such an event...... I wasted 4 traps (actually 3, I tried to craft a forth one and it failed) and all 8 tranq bombs I had and decided to just abandon it before I bumbled around in rage.... Can anyone tell me why the trap didn't go off at all?
I did use them on a trapped monster... I figured out what I was doing wrong... With many monsters you have to trap them, tranq them THEN you have you beat the shit out of them while they are still in the trap.... then they become captured.... I was not aware of this last step till I attemped this quest while online (first time online as well, really cool)..... I never knew you had to keep attacking after a monster was tranqed cause none of the guides ever say anything about it...
BaneKaikyo That just means, the monsters wasn't weak enough to capture it (yes, it can regenerate their health as much as the health won't be in the capture range). I know it because it happened me once (really, just once, all other tries I remember hadn't a such case).
Lets Play A Game Bomb shells (Iron + Sap Plants) and Tranquilizers to make a tranq bomb. For traps you will need spider webs, plus ivy to make a net, then combine the net with a pitfalltrap(can only be bought not gathered) to make a full compete pitfall trap.If you want a shock trap, combine a trap with a thunderbug(can be caught with any net at gathering spots with butterfly locations).Hope this works.
is it cool if I ask you questions about MH4U on Twitter or something, there are some things I need help understanding; i.e. the skill trees, what armor to wear, etc. ;--;
I've always been curious about them pitfall traps.....never had a need to use em until now that I'm fighting an elektra type and the shock trap has no effect jeje go figure =p anyways great video, cheers!!
An important point, elder dragons cannot be trapped, so don't waste your time later on trying that.
Thanks, I was really struggling with the gendrome quest.
As someone who's not been playing monster hunter games for a long time and picking up this game after years, this was incredibly helpful for me. Thank you!
I love you Rhajat and I love you tharja!!

Coming to 4U after MHW, and I'm so glad you've got vids on this game as well. Your MHW content was brilliant and so helpful! Thanks Arrekz!
I just started playing this and you're the first person to offer actual help. People act like assholes over his game for real 🤣🤣

thanks for making this video. I recently became hunter level 2 on monster hunter generations and I'm new to capture quest.
This helped so much,I never new it was so hard and rewarding
Thank you so much. Very very helpful. You explained it easy and straight to the point.
Thank you kindly for this video, I have been having some serious issues with the capture and didn't know I would actually need to use 2 trank bombs on it.
Wow, this will REALLY help me! I'm kinda new to the whole thing, and this tutorial will do wonders. Thanks!
Finally a short good answer video 👍

Hi I'm still playing this game so I found your video useful thanks for making it.
thanks a bunch for this video man i always beat them up too bad but i needed to know the best time to go after them
Finally got that bastard Gypceros that was driving me crazy. Turns out I had no idea what I was doing. Thanks.

Can u please make a managing equipment video for MH4 I'm struggling with that
You mean working out what to take with you on hunts, and all that stuff?
Yea just in general , what equipment to keep on u and what u can leave behind in your supply box before u go on the hunt
Jeeze, there's so much crap to sort through that I honestly need a search function.
Do you have any extra advice for when it comes to catching monsters like the Khezu that sleep on the ceiling?
+Ghestualt ez pz you lay trap under it, you climb up, you jump across icicles, and then u smack it down. Then tranq it
Please cover How to hunt type of tutorial with how to know a monster's weaknesses and which type of damage is effective against it or where to hit it and so on. PLS! TY!
Thanks mate, it's really helpful
is that the diablo armor set you using @arekkz gaming?
Could I combine 2 items to make a Tranq Bomb? and what items do i need to make a Pitfall trap? i got the shock traps in my combo list. i need dem pitfall traps doe.
Does a weapon that has the sleep effect allow you to capture a monster without tranquilizers?
thank you, I have had a hard time trying to know how to capture a monster
how did you get the Luigi costume for your cat, please?
Hey does the sleep effect help in capturing?
How did you get that monster to appear in ancestral steppe? I've done every quest there but have never seen it
Is there a specific recipe or combo to create traps???
I really fucking hate how you can only bring one trap of your own.
Yeah, you can bring one pitfall and one shock (if the monster allows it), plus the one you usually get from the supply box, but it's still incredibly annoying.

Thats some insane armor my dude.
***** what is the song title in the end of this video ? and after trapped the monster, we have to throw twice the tramp bomb ?
what about the armor skill Capture guru? how does that work?
so does limping ALWAYS mean a capture after two tranq bombs?
How do you craft the throwable tranquilizer? I'm playing insect glaive, so I don't want to learn how to use a bow to be able to capture monsters.
5raptorboy1 Bomb shells (Iron + Sap Plants) and Tranquilizers, which you can buy from the market.
thanks
This is gona be a really dumb question but where do u get the monster parts from then if ur not just straight up carving them off
Mutant kiwi You get them after finishing the quest :p even the important parts which is good.
Hey man great video. Screwed up once. Watched this vid. Now I'm capturing like I was be the very best that there ever was... lol
But I have one question. What armor do you hav ed on and why does it have that purple fog around it??
For some reason the tranq bombs don't work when I use shock traps
Maybe you didn't weaken the monsters enough, or you possibly aren't throwing them right.
I know it's a little off topic but... Will we ever be getting any DLCs? Or event weapons and armor?
Yeah we will, in March :)
Awesome ! Cant wait! Do you know any that we will be getting? Because I saw an event weapon called Aladdin's wand and it look cool
Matt Garcia I'm not sure of the actual list, but I'd imagine some of the ones Japan has - like Link, Samus, maybe Megaman? I'll make a video when I know more :)
What does it mean if I have a X on the shock trap or pit trap? I can't access them and have lost multiple opportunities to capture sleeping monsters.
It depends - if you've already placed a trap, then it means you can't place another one will it's either used, or despawned. Alternatively, if you're in one of those areas where you're standing on top of spider webs, you can't place traps on that type of floor.
I feel monster hunter should add a health bar for each monster mainly because you might or might not know if you are close to the monster limping
make video about how to use meat please ? also if weapon with sleep element , can i use the weapon to capture the monster instead of the bomb ?
Lion Peach You can use the sleep weapon to catch the monster depending on the monster's resistance to sleep. You can use the weapon but its advisable to use a tranq bomb instead.
do you have to do anything specific to use a trap? for some reason there's always red x over my traps when I try to select one it doesn't let me. and yes my weapon is sheathed lol
You can't place them on certain surfaces, like cobwebs or things like that
Skursh Dewitt thanks lol I did manage to figure it out. Although I'm not sure why it works now and it didn't before. Oh well lol
I am answering this a bit late but it has to do with the ground. You cannot lay a trap on a web...
Capturing fucking sucks, thanks for the guide man I really appreciate it, your videos help me out so much.
Thanks dude, really helped out! ^_^
What if it's a hunting quest can you still capture it??
What's your advice on setting a trap and the monster moving to another area without setting it off? Currently I would just wait for the trap to expire so I can set another trap, and try to not hit the monster too much to the point of killing it :/

*****
I just thought Gypceros was immune to shock traps due to its rubbery hide. And thought certain burrowing monsters were immune to pitfall traps.
bunnymech Yeah, some monsters are immune to certain traps, and some have ways out of them as well. Seltas queen can fly out of a Pitfall trap, and Jinogre can absorb the shock from a shock trap.
Did you see the red aura around his arm when fighting the kecha? What does this mean? It happens to me the a monster screams.
challenger/spirit skill when the monster becomes raged, the arms glows. It increases the affinity and something else.
great video really helpful thank you.....Subbed
Thanks! I've been trying to capture a monster but I kept failing
It tells me the pitfall trap is a supply item and won't let me use it. How do I fix that?
Jeremy Stradling EZ traps are supply items. All that means is that after the quest ends you loose it. If its a trap you crafted, then you can keep it.
QUESTION! If I trap a monster during a Kill Quest. Will I complete the quest this way?
Yes you will complete the quest.
But idk why you called it a questionnaire.
@@fredericksaxton9782 autocorrect. I'll change it In a bit. Also I asked because there's no way in hell i, can kill tetsucabra at this rate.
Can you tranq a monster and then weaken it to capture? At all?
So much fun to capture monsters ^-^
Could you please explain how to increase your HR? I've completed all quests from 1, 2, 3 but still HR1 >.
Have you done the quests in the guild hall?
Guild hall quest bud increase hunter rank
shadowlilman Ooooh now I get it haha. Thanks! :)
Pixelsmedia4 | SpeedARTs no problem
Pixelsmedia4 | SpeedARTs Little late, but you don't have to do every quest to rank up. Certain quests will unlock an urgent quest that takes you to the next rank. Here's a link listing them all:

I feel like I'm the only one who likes capturing monsters. For me it's quite an easy thing to do as long as I'm not being dumb with it.
But egg quests, THOSE are something I LOATHHHHH!!!
How do you lock on to a monster? I know I know I'm a noob but I'm trying to get into MH and MH3 and the water fights didn't help
Ok, I just found out that shock trap wont work on them, But I still need to know why 8 tranq bombs still didn't take it down?
BaneKaikyo I am not 100% but I believe tranq bombs only work on a trapped monster.
MarioFanGamer I eventually got enough help and tips that I know how it works now... so it is not an issue any more.... thanks though ^__^
How do you know which mision you can capture
hi i was wondering how do i make traps and the things i need to trap monsters?
Lets Play A Game Bomb shells (Iron + Sap Plants) and Tranquilizers to make a tranq bomb. For traps you will need spider webs, plus ivy to make a net, then combine the net with a pitfalltrap(can only be bought not gathered) to make a full compete pitfall trap.If you want a shock trap, combine a trap with a thunderbug(can be caught with any net at gathering spots with butterfly locations).Hope this works.
Gracious Q Alternativly, you can use a genprey fang instead of a thunder bug for a shock trap.
MarioFanGamer oh I never knew that.Just sharing what I knew from Mhu3
Man i fucking love your videos! Can you please make one for explain the differences between every meat and how to use them? Please!
So helpful, thank you
Hey! Could you maybe make a tutorial on how specific weapons might go well with specific armour? Sounds like a neat idea to me! :)
Great video thank you so much.
is it cool if I ask you questions about MH4U on Twitter or something, there are some things I need help understanding; i.e. the skill trees, what armor to wear, etc. ;--;
Wow I am surprised how much this helped
I've always been curious about them pitfall traps.....never had a need to use em until now that I'm fighting an elektra type and the shock trap has no effect jeje go figure =p anyways great video, cheers!!
I had everything down.
I just thought that one Tranq bomb should've been enough!
I wanted to know how to make the traps
feel free to use our music on any of your streams yo
This is very helpful thank u
Shock traps will not work on gypceros due to its rubber skin.
