When I was in high school, our principal was like Morgan Freeman's character in this movie, intimidating to look at, but easy to talk to. His name was William Huizinga, and he stood about 6'4" tall, and weighed about 250 pounds. Every day, he could be seen walking around the school in a suit and tie, and hamming it up with whoever he came across, whether they were a teacher, or a student. He was always at home sporting events, wearing his loggers gear, loggers was what our teams were called. When I graduated high school in 2001, I went to shake his hand, and he said, "the day I shake your hand is the day you show me your driver's license." A few years later, after I got my driver's license, I saw him after my brother's graduation commencement, and I said, "I believe we had a deal." He looked at me with a stunned look on his face, so I said, "you remember when you told me a few years ago that the day you shook my hand was the day I showed you my driver's license?" Let's just say he fulfilled his end of the deal right then and there. A few months later, I read about his cancer diagnosis, and when I called the school to ask about him, I was informed that he had died. Now, if you were to go to Onalaska (Washington) high school, you'll see a brick garden around the school sign, and right next to where Mr. Huizinga would park his car, you'll see a plaque that contains one of his favorite sayings, "It's A Great Day To Be A Logger." Rest in peace, Bill. We miss you, man.

" Mrs. Powers, these hoodlums have told me something I cannot believe..." Lol. Teachers today just dont understand that relationships are everything. You must build relationships with kids. They don't care about what you think about them until they think that you care.

=) OH!! believe me... there are a few schools I'm aware that have them [LOL] The Mega Phone, Walking the Halls, Making sure the students get to class, Greeting students as they arrive, Will kick them out when they refuse to follow the school district policy and procedure, etc....

There's a bigger principle of leadership in this scene that I really enjoy. To this point, Mr. Clark (Morgan Freeman) has been trying to get his vision of Eastside High to the "roots" of the school - the students, teachers, community, etc. That's why he's such a hard a** at the beginning - as the saying goes, "do the right things, and feelings/emotions will follow." He needed to change behavior before the heart could be changed. Mr. Clark wanted independent thinkers that wanted what was best for the school, not behaviors done because "we've always done them" (note: any educator knows what I'm talking about here.) At this point, Mrs. Powers took a risk that Mr. Clark wants to see out of everyone - a risk that leads to better students, a better school, and a better future for the kids. The exchange was, in his own way, realizing that. And a big reason why he's all chipper (for maybe the first time in the movie to this point) immediately after. Great leaders find ways to get their vision/mission into the hearts of those they lead so that the leader's vision becomes their follower's vision - and that's exactly what was described here in a mere four minutes.
You know why I loved men like Joe Clark? Because once upon a time, it was okay to DEMAND better. Not just ask for it, or hope for it. But EXPECT it. That school (Eastside High) improved because he was a taskmaster who DEMANDED those students be better than the expectations the outside world and maybe (mostly?) they had for themselves. When you have people's best interest in heart and mind, you should be pushing them to strive to be more than they are. We need that back.
While discipline improved at the school, overall academic performance did not change all that much. The school is still ranked among the lowest in New Jersey in terms of academic performance.
Magical thing about this scene was the fact that it was his 1st(Mr. Clarke's) time hearing that version. Then to realize that the music teacher, Mrs. Powers had made something out of his young men that who knew only needed some true guidance and sense of direction. He amazed at the talent that he's witnessing from which many in the neighborhood possibly considered a lost cause. Magnificent scene!
Fair Eastside High, Fair Eastside By thy side we'll stand and always praise thy name To heaven, yeah lend our hearts and hands to help increase thy fame. (oh lord) The honor yeah, of old Eastside High brings forth our loyalty. (loyalty loyalty) So cheer for dear old Eastside High lead on to victory
great movie hey, those guys sang that school song beautiful they 'killed' it even mr Clark was taken away after hearing it he was walking greeting the teachers the song was just playing in his mind, this movie here...nice!!
Right he thought he was gonna in there and show them up then call their parents and go on about how misbehaved they were. They started singing he couldn't say a damn thing.
Funny thing about the group singing in the bathroom (RIFF) is that they were a group from Patterson, NJ and they all went to Eastside High in real life and it is actually the place where there group was formed
I think the moment at 3:30 was super important to note ! You can tell that he (Joe Clark) had a new feeling, a kind of hope for East side high - that fist thrust was because he saw his students shine and get excited about something and have pride in their school! The excitement he feels is because his students are becoming more excited! Even the staff was looking at him in an odd fashion because he’s (Joe Clark) isn’t usually that enthusiastic or upbeat while walking the halls of the school- and That to me is the most powerful part of this whole sene ! LOVE the harmony and that we can hear the young men singing in the background after he delivers the line to Mrs. Powers
I loooooved this scene from the movie. It's one of my favorite scenes! Still gives me chills! Those kids did a great job! Wow! Also.... Morgan did a GREAT job on this film. What a great actor!
It sure can there is a bunch of movies that I still watch (Lean On Me, Sister Act 1&2, The Temptations, etc.) I find myself singing like I was actually in the movie/group. Always loved Music.🥰

When you have people's best interest in heart and mind, you should be pushing them to strive to be more than they are. We need that back.
While discipline improved at the school, overall academic performance did not change all that much. The school is still ranked among the lowest in New Jersey in terms of academic performance.
Yeah sure you're right we need a Joe Clark in our schools today
This scene is so powerful; it get's me everytime 😭😭😭
Love it! And Morgan Freeman's face through the whole song is priceless!

jet0l19 LOL
jet0l19 jet u jokey boy haha xD
Foreal?
jet0l19 You were in the stall during the filming, or you were there when the principal actually made them sing this?
Magical thing about this scene was the fact that it was his 1st(Mr. Clarke's) time hearing that version. Then to realize that the music teacher, Mrs. Powers had made something out of his young men that who knew only needed some true guidance and sense of direction. He amazed at the talent that he's witnessing from which many in the neighborhood possibly considered a lost cause. Magnificent scene!
Fair Eastside High, Fair Eastside
By thy side we'll stand and always praise thy name
To heaven, yeah lend our hearts and hands to help increase thy fame. (oh lord)
The honor yeah, of old Eastside High brings forth our loyalty. (loyalty loyalty)
So cheer for dear old Eastside High lead on to victory

Everybody knows this alma mater but not their own high school's lol...I never learned mine but I know this one. Thank you Mrs. Powers!
Funny thing about the group singing in the bathroom (RIFF) is that they were a group from Patterson, NJ and they all went to Eastside High in real life and it is actually the place where there group was formed
Tre Carter what was the groups name?
Wow. Fun facts. I never knew that
I think the moment at 3:30 was super important to note !
No matter what, music can hit your soul in ways nothing else can. Maybe love
Brandon Washington And that’s a fact! Music can make an cute many issues in this place we call Planet Home
It sure can there is a bunch of movies that I still watch (Lean On Me, Sister Act 1&2, The Temptations, etc.) I find myself singing like I was actually in the movie/group. Always loved Music.🥰
That scene is more than 30 years old..and it still is so inspiring!!
I love that that just put him in a good mood at the end there.
Good singing will do that😊
