    I'm a local and what you say is mostly correct for central Lisbon (and maybe central Porto). As you go inland, all those problems amenize, including the slow bureaucracy and dirtiness. I've moved recently to Torres Vedras (45min from Lisbon) and got my utilities installed in a couple of days.

      Thanks for the feedback, José! Yes, you're right - moving away from the big cities definitely can help minimize some of the problems I mentioned.

    In many states in the USA the landlord is not responsible for mold. We have a perception of better rentals and tenant rights in the USA but that’s usually not the case.

    the delay in the services has nothing to do with slow pace of life, but with excess of demand due to the massive numbers of people moving to Portugal

    • @bomdiakylie
      @bomdiakylie  Рік тому

      Hey Silvério! I think what you're saying is true. However, I still believe that the delay in services has to do with the slow pace of life because... when you think about it, the more people that move the Portugal, the more money both the private and public sector make... the more money they make, the more money they should be investing into resources to keep the speed of things going and prevent delays. If they're earning more money but services slow down significantly, I believe it could be because they're not using their resources properly, AKA, they're moving slowly. But that's just my opinion! What do you think?

      Its also difficulted by the sucessive governments who have wage a war against public services, by curting budgets, freezing salaries, cutting out health benefits and refusal to hire new staff to replace the retirees, all for the sake of deviating money for the parties donors' business contracts and to win voters with easy demagoguery by demonizing and blaming the public service for the many mistakes made by the neoliberal policies of both the PS and PSD in the last 40 years.

    Born and raised in PT, never had a slow life!! Life is a struggle you have to hustle!! You might get that impression because your first experience was coming in vacations or something like that! If you have a house and a family to take care of, you will have to hustle! We have a saying that resumes this: A shrimp that falls to sleep, is taken by the wave! To show you that if you really don't run for the oportunitties you will get left behind! No Sleep, just Hustle, day and night! Low cost living?!?!?! Give me a break! If you earn 2 000€ per month yeah, maybe you are ok.. but no company pays that for a regular job, so, that is NOT the average salary, if you are not an engeneer or a doctor. People are finding soooooo difficult to leave parent's home because MATH CONFIRMS IT'S IMPOSSIBLE in terms of incoming vs expenses! Getting anything that has to do with paper work done is EXTREMELY difficult, waaaayy too much burocracy, and prepare yourselfs for naked eye watchable CORRUPTION!!! Banksters rule the country, as in many more places around the world. Sometimes I get the impression that Portugal is Europe's 3º world country, and a gateway for all types of shit getting into Europe! It's a shame, and a waste of a country! Good weather, good beaches, good food, but lot's of dumb and stupid people and terrible politicians!! But hey, you might not feel all of this as a foreign! Cheers

    I think I have to disagree with a lot of your comments. I have been in Lisbon for 6 weeks now and the cost of utilities is half of what they charge in the UK. Transport is good and relatively cheap so we don't need a car. We opened bank accounts before we came over and had our cards delivered to the UK. As we live in a popular area with tourists, it can be expensive to eat out, but we shop were the locals shop and the food is generally cheaper. The streets are clean and there are plenty of little shops and businesses in our street. After our visa papers were completed, we had our visas in 4 weeks.

    Weeks for water and electricity? With a lease on your name and NIF you should do that in 2 days max... gas can be trickier.... but it's faster if you schedulle the mandatory inspection yourself after searching for someone to do it, instead of waiting for them to do everything on their own (the inspection can delay the process... not the connection of gas itself!)

    Where do you live? It takes one day to get internet and maximun one week to get water, or electricity. Excepts if one gets to live in he middle of nowhere, but how long would it take in the middle of an isolated area of Alaska, or an UK rural area? About the papers, if one person goes to the "Citizen Shop" or Loja do Cidadão, it is not so difficult and it could not take so long, if a persone fulfills the requirements needed.

    Everything you mention is, I’m afraid, more like your personal opinion rather than factual. There are issues, like on any other cities, but there are easy solutions for everything you just said, as long as you know whom to reach.
    The exception, unfortunately, is rentals availability. That’s why Americans should consider to buy instead of having rentals as their only option.
    Regarding things being slow, if you know the right people, things can work pretty fast around here. The exception may be some public services, but even on that area, if you hire the right professionals, things can speed up considerably.
