- My views on these movies have changed quite a bit, so I decided to DEEP dive into the new one as someone who may have actually 108-ed on their views of Irish romcoms.

The only american I have heard do a perfect Irish accent was Jared Leto in a movie called The last of the high kings his accent is fantastic and his acting isn't bad either

The best Irish accent I've heard is Daisy Edgar-Jones in "Normal People." I didn't know of her before that and thought she was an Irish actor.

The sprawling estate and the location that was used for where the wishing chair was are both in Co. Wicklow. The wishing chair scenes were shot at Lough Tay, and the mansion is Killruddery House.

My grandmother had a wishing seat in her garden (in rural Dublin), it was a granite stone that was stuck in a bank with a tree root growing in an arch at the back. My cousins and I used to make wishes on it. They never came true, and I never got that pony with the long mane and tail.
You forgot to mention that in the movie the lake is called lough tay, and it really is filmed at lough tay WHICH IS IN WICKLOW. They drove from somewhere around knock to wicklow to row a boat.

Also, growing up and living in Ireland my whole life, most people I know call that Irish accent "Hollywood Oirish" Like Darby O'Gill Irish.
I think old Hollywood thought they could manufacture an accent akin to the Atlantic accent used on radio and tv of the past in America or the BBC British accent. Our accents don't go like that as, like you pointed out, there are SO many on such a small accent and they are integral to our identity. We can usually tell if someone grew up in a small townland by how they pronounce words, sometimes I can even tell the family they are from or even what teacher they had based on how they speak English or Irish. Also, as you have pointed out in other shorts etc, it is also about our grammar and syntax. We have a flow that is natural to us and even if someone is reading a script, it doesn't always "fall off the tongue" like it does a native who grew up here.
Yeah, Wales is similar, as is Scotland, but they are not the same and it physically hurts to hear a Scots or Welsh person try to copy it because we can usually hear their native accent clearly.
We, on the other hand, are pretty good at other accents. English actors are usually not unless they had Irish parents or family.
Surprise surprise we don't fit in other country's boxes for us lol
Sorry for the essay, it's a touchy subject for me. I used to be able to excuse using foreign actors as there were very very few Irish actors who were famous enough to be in these types of movies but nowadays there is absolutely no excuse and a lot of us are sick to the back teeth of it !

MMH if I were writing the movie, I would avoid the leprechaun but would have another member of the Sídhe grant the wish. I love your idea of Brígid correcting the problem. As she was (in Goddess form) another member of the Tuatha Dé Danann she would be ideal to correct the problem that was started by another of her tribe. I think it would be really interesting to have it be another female member of her tribe who was jealous of her stature as Christian isn't. Bit complicated for an American audience mind! And movies are too short for complicated explanations.
Meanwhile, as an Irish person, I hate fake Irish portrayals by Hollywood. But in fairness, I do watch a lot of fake Highlander portrayals and love them. It's fun and unrealistically romantic. But I understand it's not real. Its kind of an alternative reality/fairy tale Scotland in my head.
Geography doesn't worry me but I am always fascinated when I watch a scene in the tv series Ripper Street that was filmed around the corner from where I worked in Dublin as it's supposed to be Victorian London. There have been a few other instances but that is the most memorable as I used to watch the filming during lunch breaks.
The closest thing I can think of to a "wishing seat" are the holy wells dotted all over the country. People visited these wells in ancient times for their magical properties (typically curing some ailment or other). In a masterstroke the early Christian missionaries co-opted them into Christianity by deeming them Holy wells so the Christian converts could keep visiting them and they are still remembered to this day. There is a fantastic Blind Boy podcast about it. Aside: Do you listen to Blind Boy? You would totally get on.
Could not watch because spoiler alerts :) but I am committed to watching this movie in the most Irish way possible, on an Aer Lingus flight from the USA while eating lucky charms and potatoes, then and only then will I eagerly return to this wonderful expose :)

I think we should all brainstorm the ultimate anti "Americanised" Ireland movie.
I'm talking the main love interest is polish or Nigerian Irish Apple employee. They live in the most average housing estate to ever average. Drive a grey Volkswagen golf. Have them be a tayto sandwich/chicken fillet roll obsessed man.
Just make an Irish movie, with all the irishism in it, but just make a fake "giddle dee" trailer to market it to the state side audience

St Brigid (in the movie) literally tripped Maddy's mother to stop her from being at the wedding to like ruin that dream of her wedding Maddy had and the mother ended up in the hospital which was so crazy. Like of all the things to do. I just found that so funny
I tried watching it. Got through 20 minutes. By far, unironically the worst film (un/partially) I've ever seen!

I watched the film out of curiosity when it first appeared online. I was expecting dross and although it was a step up from that, there were still plenty of dross moments. The Irish diddly idle tropes were there, the 1960s bus for starters, but thankfully they did at least show that not all Irish people live in thatched cottages, with donkeys outside the door. The idea of very wealthy Irish people is quite a novelty, and very welcome. The biggest gripe I had was the Saint Brigid nonsense and of course the lack of Irish people. It really was a film that could’ve been set anywhere in Europe, it was just generic mush.
If you want to see a truly awful recent Irish romcom, look no further than Wild Mountain Thyme. Although I love Emily Blunt and Jamie Dornan they were unable to save this film. Emily’s accent wasn’t the worst I’ve heard, although it wasn’t great, but Jamie Dornan’s was worse even though he’s Irish. He’s from Northern Ireland and seemed to really struggle with doing an accent from the Republic. This film really went to town on all the worst Irish stereotypes. Everyone seemed to live in ramshackle houses in the middle of fields, with no fitted kitchens, no nice furniture, no mod cons of any sort including TVs, laptops or mobile phones. They also insisted on dressing Emily Blunt like a character from the 50s with long dresses (on a farm) and wearing shawls instead of coats. The “shawly woman” nonsense was what made me so mad. I’ve never seen any woman wearing a shawl as part of their normal clothing, except at tourist attractions. It’s the type of film that would set any Irish person’s teeth on edge, or indeed anyone who has adopted Ireland as home. I can’t recommend the film even as a curiosity. Now if you want a really good Irish film, a thriller, very funny, but rather dark then take a look at The Guard with Brendan Gleeson.

Even though i was in connolly books watching them film this in templebar last year, the truth is that boiled down to componants the only reason I'm finding out more about this film is because you watched it. I think i could listen to you all day, and ps, you remind me of rachel brosnahan, but way cooler.

I think the saddest part of this whole movie is that even the Irish actors have exaggeratedly flexed the Irish accent for Hollywood. Jesus Christ. 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️
