  • Trucking and staying in shape rarely go together, but it doesn’t have to be difficult. The most important thing when trying to stay healthy as an otr truck driver is nutrition. Actually, nutrition is most important regardless, but seems a bit more important as a truck driver. Let’s talk nutrition. Stay Driven!

    I lost 30lbs on a 1200 calorie a day diet. I don’t like to drink my calories so I eat salads, fruits and protein. Also as someone with depression and mental health issues junk food just makes it worst. I bought a fold up bike that I use everyday otr. You look amazing.
    Just checked my bmr and it 1,485 calories for my weight and height. 120lbs 5’3”. Crazy. I also log on myfitnesspal app.

    The inside of my rig is effectively a gym. I have bands, 2 dumbbells, a jump rope, boxing gloves, hand wraps, a 70lb heavy bag, and all sorts of fitness supplements. There is no excuse.

    Love this video. Fellow Landstar driver here and I just wanna say ive been OTR for about 7.5 yrs now. I quit smoking and joined the gym a year after starting. Haven't stopped working out since. I usually stop at a Anytime Fitness if I can park my truck near one, if not, I have resistance bands I use and a matt. Im 190 lbs and have a pr of 355 bench, 455 deadlift, and 400 squat. It took a few years of dedication but its the best feeling in the world. Nutrition is absolutely the most important thing when it comes to a healthy LIFESTYLE!

    That 80/20 rule works for green vegetables and protein as well. Getting lots of greens on the road is hard so the green shake can help cover the micro nutrients.

    Don't even need to leave your truck to get a good workout.. got two sets of dumbbells and a set of bands and you're ready to go. The most challenging part is your legs but you can do box squats dumbbell deadlifts calf raises and etc

      Buy bands they are light and you can do almost anything with them. IMO they are not as good as iron but they work to stay in shape if you put the work in.

    I used to work at a warehouse and 98% of the truckers I saw were extremely obese. Now I'm getting into trucking and don't wanna end up like those guys. Thanks for the tips, I'm gonna try my hardest to stay in shape.

    Next time tie the jump rope to the dumbells and go 100% strightfaced about combining your workouts and meals to save time. Extra points if you can get one of those dual beer can hardhats to stay on with a bottle of GNC whatever on one side and a blended green shake on the other side.
    Pizza hanging on a wire in front of you just out of reach as motivation for the win.................

      @@josenevarez3483 Not yet but I am going to buy it. I just don’t know how reasonable it is to make a lot of the recipes out here on the road from what I’ve seen on UA-cam. I’m sure there’s good stuff in there that we could make out here though

    Hey man! I just made a video about this. If you're a military veteran with USAA, sign up for a program they have called active and fit. It gives you access to about 15000 different gyms across the u.s. I have the truck friendly locations save to my GPS or I find places I can park and walk ti the gym. My main go to Zar Anytime Fitness, Planet Fitness, Gold's Gym, Snap Fitness and a few more. It's really nice to have other options for showers and workouts.
    I definitely need to make another video covering that topic. Love your videos man. Channels like these inspired me to start my own.

    My morning routine is normally I eat at least 2 boiled eggs and some wrapped cheese. Eggs are the best Breakfast for the low calories, good fats and the protein along with drinking 2 bottles of water to get the blood to really start flowing. Lunch I'll go with Chicken and rice with a little bit of soy sauce. Dinner is up in the air but I am trying to get healthier on that part. Some truckers need to understand one of the reasons this job is one the deadliest occupations in the US is because most truckers have a bad diet which leads to the many health issues you see them have and for me my dads side of the family gave me heart issues to worry about and my moms side gave me diabetes and I'm only 36. And for exercise I drive a dry van and from my front bumper to the back of my trailer is 72 feet and if I walk around that truck at least 33 times then that equals a mile, sure your fellow drivers may thing your crazy but its just one of many ways to get those steps in or walk around the truck stop you're and take a look at the attractions. There's no excuse to not get a legit workout in if you don't want to to be one of those getting taken out of your truck by the coroner's office because you had an issue.

      @@jeffalan4782 a small shop in Houston has some and up to 90. There’s two extensions beyond the original 50s to 70 and 90.

    I'm bringing a full and good set of resistance bands. I love fitness training. I'm planning on using a mix of resistance bands and body weight movements to workout.

      Push ups, squats and lunges, and core exercises are easy to do aywhere. Get a 20lb weight vest as well.

      @@13Dstyle I usually bust it out every 2 days to add a little to the workout. But I do at least 100 pushups everyday with core. It doesnt sound like much but if you do it everyday it adds up and helps keep you energized. I also dont have the driver neck/shoulder pain after long hours of driving which I attribute to the constant push ups.
      And stretch. Always stretch your cire and back everyday and you will avoid lower back pain from sitting constantly.

    I love this, a fitness and diet plan that's not meant to make you a peak athlete. All this is supposed to do is keep you from dieing in that truck from a heart attack or a stroke. Love it!

    Well said I just got my CDL making UA-cam videos I was thinking about doing a weight-loss trucking serious due to me making positive influential videos and walking 10,000 steps/keto and now making semi truck and videos feel like it will our class together really well so I really appreciate your message

    I’m not really in to loosing weight but staying fit is a must I have free weights in the truck and a portable bicycle I try to ride some everyday and considering I’m about to be 40 and still weight what I did when I finished camp think I’m doing good

    You can drop around 20lbs by just dropping soda period. But don't just stop the sodas immediately unless you want to deal with caffeine headaches until your use to not taking in caffeine.

      Like my wife is always saying to me, “why drink your calories?? Eat them instead.” So, I drink water with every meal. Gave up soda years ago except for an occasional root beer once in a great while.

      Yea and invest in fat free sauces and sugar free sauces like g Hughes bbq sauces. If u use sugar for stuff, replace it with A low/zero calorie. I recommend Walmart’s sucralose sweetener. Diet pops, lean sandwich meats like smoked turkey. Lavash bread, lower carb wraps.

      I used to carry a portable drum kit in my truck and play it until I was a sweaty mess. Great cardio workout for sure! 👍

    Easy rule of thumb don't eat sitting behind the wheel.
    Give up the sugar (soda, donuts, etc.)
    Get out and move.

    Ya know I've quit smoking cigarettes 5 year's ago....meth 4 years ago come Sept 26 21 and marijuana 2years ago may...I don't drink anymore for more then 8ish years ..I never woulda thought that the greatest battle of my life would be food...I am 46 damned near 47..anyhow I am looking for a way out ..never thought that I'd say it..but here I am....I'm 6 foot...and 385-390...i have a goal of 100lbs...

    Hey man what smartwatch do you have? I threw my Fitbit in the garbage when I started driving. It said I was walking 100,000 steps per day. It was picking up the vibration from my Kenworth as steps 😂

    Hey Brian, I've been enjoying all your content for the last couple of years since I had gotten into flatbed. Not doing flatbed any longer (running ltl locally here in Fort Worth) but I always liked watching your securement videos. It's weird but there's something cathartic about it. Learning the how's and why's of securement. Do you still do those or have you moved on? I know you got a lot more on your plate these days. Just curious. Stay safe brother and God bless.

    Good video I agree dork died as a lot of negative connotations about it when it really is a nutrition plan. When people Here the word diet I think they think starvation. I've been doing videos on healthy cooking in the truck on my alternate UA-cam channel.

    If you want to really lose weight and not feel hungry, switch to a keto diet. A high fat diet and cut all carbs. Sounds difficult to get rid of carbs, but when you are on it for a couple of weeks you will feel so much better. I am diabetic and have lost 25lbs in one month with no exercise and almost off all medications. Look into Keto diet.

    yup! I think the new hours gives drivers more time to enjoy, instead of driving hard and being exhausted. Use to do calf raises on the steps before getting in to drive, haha.
    Pop of any kind and the zero calories ones aren't any better because of what they replace for sugar. also eliminate as much salt as possible and get it off the table to reduce temptations.
    I would eat protein bars while driving too.
    now the part that sucks about the word DIET is it's miss understanding as it's actual meaning is what we eat nothing more BUT marketing for fad books made it a very bad/horrible word.
    now sitting thinking about all this... doesn't count lol
    hungry.. drink water helps fill the stomach so have a cup before a meal too.
    Nutritional Almanac is a great book to own too.

    Good video. i used to do that and thought it was a healthy plan. but come to find out the sodium in the turkey and salmon is really high. that can bloat and sit in body for long time.

    Great video! Bro try also to buy an exercise bike,it allows you to do cardio in the truck without the need to walk outside or else. I sweat more on the exercise bike than lifting weights but each their own 👍

      You put towels on the floor? Indoor cycling makes me sweat like a pig due to the lack of air circulation. Is it feasible to carry a road bike in the truck and take it for a spin outdoors?

      @@barbaroacosta5335 You must have an APU or a generator like Predator 3500 to run a portable ac inside the truck when the truck engine is off. So you can workout comfortably inside the truck. Also get an exercise bench for your back,heart and back are the ones that get fucked the most in trucking. Take care of those 2 and you will be very healthy

    As always thank you for you video. Just diagnosed w type 2 diabetes and I am not sure if I should keep trucking or if it's possible to get my blood sugar under control while driving. Gonna try.

      @@LegacyFarmandHomestead since diagnosed last Friday salad protein powder and eggs have been my staple. My body is trying to adjust cause I have had absolutely zero energy. But not wanting to loose toes or worse is a damm good motivation to not stop.

      @@DJ-KRIKIT I'd recommend dropping the protein powder. Protein is good but protein powder spikes blood sugar. Protein needs to be combined with fat to reduce the spike

I pack my own food that my wife makes for me which includes chicken breasts, peas, carrots, broccoli, quinoa, turkey, romaine lettuce and fresh spinach and fresh fruits like apples, peaches, plums, grapes, and strawberries. I hardly ever eat out.
