DELPHINE DESCENDS
After her family is killed and her homeworld occupied, young Kathreen Martin is sent to the distant world of Furoris for re-education. She will live the rest of her life as a serf - to be bought and sold as a commodity of the Imperial Network.
When her only chance of escape is ruined, a chance mistaken identity offers her a new life as the orphaned daughter of a First-Citizen Senator and heiress to a vast fortune.
She vows to claw her way into power to sit among the worlds’ elite. Then, with her own hands, she will reap bloody vengeance on them all.
But to beat them, she must play their game. And she must play it better than them all.
BLACK MILK
Prometheus has the chance to bring his wife back from the dead, but doing so will mean the destruction of Earth.
Spanning time, planets and dimensions, Black Milk draws to a climactic point in a post-apocalyptic future, where humanity, stranded with no planet to call home, fights to survive against a post-human digital entity that pursues them through the depths of space.
Five lives separated by aeons are inextricably linked by Prometheus’s actions:
Ystil.3 is an AI unit sent back in time from the distant future to investigate Prometheus’s discovery...
The mysterious Lydia has devoted her life to finding a planet that the last remaining humans can call home…
Tom Jones (he’s a HUGE fan!) is an AI trapped inside a digital subspace, lost and desperate to find his way back to his beloved in real-time…
Dr Norma Stanwyck is a neuroscientist from 24th Century Earth whose personal choices ripple throughout time...
Prometheus must learn the necessity of death or the entire universe will be swallowed by his grief.

It's great to hear the events of Consider Phlebas and Look to Windward conveyed so fluently. LtW is my favourite of the Culture novels. For a book where comparatively little action occurs, the conversations between Ziller and Kabe, Quilan and the Mind of Masaq are profound, discussing the guilt and consequences of war. I utterly adore the book.
Far and away my favourite Sci-Fi documentary channel. I find each theme in the episodes are relevant and I especially appreciate the precise and concise manner in which they are presented.
Great video. The culture series were some of the first books i read when getting back into reading as an adult, and will always have a special spot in my heart! Love seeing the events of the iridian war laid out like this! Brilliant.
Great video, I like how the Idiran war is a backdrop to the series.
Finally some love for 'Consider Phlebas'.
Thanks again, Darrel! Your 'Sci-Fi Oddity' is a great YT channel! 🙂
Thanks again!!!😊
I'm currently reading The Player of Games and Dune Messiah together - Culture Minds versus the Butlerian Jihad!
Pretty fun philosophical juxtaposition.
That's wild.
‘One of the more interesting conflicts in that obscure section of space…’
I love this! Especially the reading of select passages.
Thank you!
Excellent synopsis.
Another great video!
Great summation !! made me want to re-read !
Brilliant analysis. I've been hoping for a deep dive into the Culture for a long time. Very much looking forward to more. Cheers!
Fantastic analysis as always. So glad you decided to take a deeper look into The Culture!!
The Minds would be very upset with you for referring to them as AI.
I am but a lowly stupid sack of meat.
Apology accepted but we will be watching you… want to be slap droned? I think not….
Thanks for your series! With the too-early death of Banks I’ve tried looking for authors who are in the same vein….
It a series I must really read
Is publication order the best way to read. Series?
Good question. I tackle this topic in my video here: "How To Read The Culture Series: A Comprehensive Guide" ua-cam.com/video/GP5QYhReduc/v-deo.html
Try Surface Detail or the Hydrogens Sonata. I just finished both of them and they were excellent. Jump right in.
You will love it or leave it.
I think there are a few good entry points, my suggestion would be Player of Games or Excession.
I wish Look To Windward was available on audiobook. Does anyone know why it's not or when it will be?
I have Look to windward on audible, is it not for sale there any longer? It may be because I'm in Australia, or that I purchased it years ago, but even when I search incognito it comes up for me, might be worth looking there?
@@BenjaminsBookclub correct. I've looked, and even tried setting my VPN for UK, and couldn't find it.
@@mervjohnson8010 maybe try VPN to Australia, I'm looking at it's store page right now on a fresh PC.
Definitely on Audible in the U.K. read by the inimitable Peter Kenny… one of the best audiobooks I’ve ever heard….
I've never read anything else but 'Consider Phlebas'. Still a good read.
What? For real? No way!
"Top Ten Erotic Sci-fi Books" next, please! 🙂
Haha! 🤣 I can’t say I’ve ever read any but I endeavour to keep an open mind.
@@Sci-FiOdyssey 😀
@@Sci-FiOdyssey Well, 'Strange Stranger in the Strangest of Strangelands' is kind of "erotic", right? 🙂
Semi-anarchist? I'm struggling to think of how it isn't full anarchist? It'd align with real world anarchism of places like Anarchist Spain in a1930's just fine, I'd think? Similarly, with other fictional Anarchic works like 'The Dispossessed?'
Idirans Did Notning Wrong !!!!
First!!! 🙂
But you are Darrel ‘s friend, right?
@@jasperdoornbos8989 Nope!
Why would I be?
@@subraxas Then I am mistaken, my fault! But I am sure there are good reasons to be. Darrel seems like a nice guy.
@@jasperdoornbos8989
Yep, he does. 🙂
It's an okay setting. Not as brilliant as Neal Asher's Polity.
