All of these comments are from middle schoolers that read the short story, and are now saying how inaccurate the movie is. You are paying attention to the wrong thing. Just watch for all the cheesy, yet great camera shots like at 27:00 and have a good laugh. The film was made a bit more than eighty years ago. Give it a rest.
So this is where the original story originated from. Then I found out it’s based on a short story. It’s interesting to see where a lot of media got their inspiration for the Hunter stories and death game from this film.
Read the short story in high school and loved it...I've read it several times since then and its still one of my all time favorites! This version is hands down the best cinematic rendition...Its not totally faithful to the story but the core plot is the same...RKO Pictures produced some fantastic movies; King Kong came out the same year as this... Two classic movies, same year, same studio!!
There are some advantages the book has over the movie, but vice versa can be said for the film. I do like how even the protagonist of the book can be morally questionable as it really gives him depth that can stand on his own without the inclusion of the damsel in distress this movie uses. Oh well, at least she brings along her brother who is a delight. That said, the film has great atmosphere atmosphere building. Jungles are common settings for horror media for good reason, being inherently wild and dangerous. Even in monochrome, it really gives me such a feeling, partially because the music is very memorable and intense, befitting the tone itself. We don't see many wild animals in this besides the shark, but aside from budget reasons, I imagine that's because Zaroff killed most of them. Speaking of which, the darkened lighting in Zaroff's trophy room highlights how inherently scary it is. Holy crap, a detailed fake severed head in the 30s?? This was made during the Great Depression, by the way! Anyway, I get the feeling this would be given a high end PG these days, maybe even R just from that. And it also helps that this has stronger acting than a lot of today's films. Like I said, I really enjoyed the drunken acting of Robert Armstrong. Leslie Banks is a charismatic bad guy as ever as well, I don't know what it is about early 20th century films that have such enjoyable performances. You do owe it to yourself to read the story as well, but the on screen interpretation of it is impressive for its time.
A fast-paced film. Marooned on General Zaroff's island in the space of nine minutes. They didn't waste time on lengthy expository introductions here. The film has since been colorized. I recall reading the story by Richard Connell in jr. high school; it's now in the public domain in the U.S. (as of 2020).
The story didn't have a random stupid chick in it and we weren't told who won the hand to hand fight to the death at the end. The short story in-fact only had 4 characters, one of which was only present in the immediate opening. The other 3 were Rainsford, Zaroff, and Ivan. The story was better imo.
Nicholas Hnatusko First of all your comment made no sense. There is nothing I said that it could even be a response to. I usually don't argue with dumbasses, but I'm curious. Why am I a "dummy" and how did your comment apply to anything. Stuti asked a question and I replied with facts. Oh, and you spelled "story" incorrectly.
Your talkin about the extra stuff in the videos n i said its called a short story for a reason bcuz everything isnt in it n it was a typo dumbass but wat is "stuti" awe ok
I don't know who u r but Nicholas is my son I do not appreciate you verbally abusing my son. He is not stupid in fact is very intelligent . If u were taught any manners u should apologize. And my son wil as well for calling u a dumbass.
This is still the best film version of Richard Connell's short story, and improves upon it because of the addition of Fay Wray's character. Fay is always a joy to watch, and her presence in this pre-Code adaptation makes Zaroff's obsession with hunting even more twisted.
13 years later the U SS Indianapolis was torpedoed and sunk by a japanese submarine. The crew was attacked by the most devastating shark attacks in history.
Yep me too ! One of many short stories I had to read for an Eng-comp class. This poor guy would surely be creeped if he'd seen all the horror movie's we've all seen. An apt title, with any other game the advantage is usually with the hunter, it is the opposite here in this case, it's the quarry that has the advantage here. After all these years later I still remember a word in the story's very last sentence - maybe it was the last word ! 'Repast'.
Lmao like how when he dies he somehow throws the arrow because OBVIOUSLY when someone dies any belongings that they have in their hands is automatically thrown out of them...
It was great, and the year has nothing to do with it. Many of the greatest movies ever made were filmed in that same period. Are you very young? Too many today think a movie is all about special effects. This is the generation of low IQ, uneducated, marching morons.
+Jamayah Giles This was published in "Boys' Life" magazine(I believe) around 1971-72...read it then an absolutely loved the story...a made-for television movie loosely based on this story came out about the same time (1974) starring Sam Bottoms and Andy Griffith..."Savages"... www.imdb.com/title/tt0072116/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_46

When I was 10 I had a poster of King Kong pulling of Fay Wrey''s bra. Man that sent me over the edge.
This movie should be remastered it's that good!
The film has been beautifully restored. It's registered as Number 584, from The Criterion Collection. Additionally, there are optional English subtitles, for those who are deaf or hearing impaired. All of The Criterion Collection DVD's receive frame for frame restoration. The greatest care is given to every title. There are more than 1700 issued films from them, from all over the world. From Silent Film to Now, the quality of each DVD is superb. I own more than 100; I stopped counting long ago.

Totally what many would say in a shark attack cx
Haha lol
jodi olson IKR lol
In nineth grade my class read the book and watch the movie and I still think about this book years later. The writing was phenomenal and the idea was so crazy, I never even imagined that someone could hunt a human like an animal yet the book did an amazing job at portraying the hunter and hunted❤❤
looks like im not the only one here from school
did they show ship trap island in this movie or not because I don't feel like watching this and the paper is due in 3 days!!!
@@Mia-wz2he the book is like 20 pages just read bruh

The movie: Death, drowning, screams of agony
My classmates: *"YEAHHH,WOOOOOOO"*
From the people who brought you the original version of 'King Kong'.
I like the part where they run across the log- the log scene is one of my favorite king kong parts
The short story was WAY better
No, it wasn't.
+Cruser Power ikr
Vladimir Lenin yup
Vladimir Lenin I have too say yeah it was.
Thumbs up for actually READING!!! SOooo much better for your brain and education.
writer Slade wrote about this movie and its a great movie! yes there is an intense rush in hunting another human being, most dangerous game indeed.
They didn't need cgi and /or nudity, they have stories
So this is where the original story originated from. Then I found out it’s based on a short story.
It’s interesting to see where a lot of media got their inspiration for the Hunter stories and death game from this film.
thanks Cinemassacre :)
Loved the story and movie!!!!!!!!!
Here, here!!
Arianna Lopez you should watch Mst3k bloodlust
i saw this movie years ago i forgot how good it was .
Anybody else seeing those fight scenes? Like these guys are tap dancing
I wonder if they acted it more slowly and then sped up the film.
I thought there was only two people in the yacht: Rainsford and Whitney...
ikr
Yeah me too
There was the crew still but the boat never crashed. He fell
There is a lot of difference between the book and movie.
also the captain as mentioned in the beginning of the story
A fast-paced film. Marooned on General Zaroff's island in the space of nine minutes. They didn't waste time on lengthy expository introductions here. The film has since been colorized. I recall reading the story by Richard Connell in jr. high school; it's now in the public domain in the U.S. (as of 2020).
Made by the crew that gave us King Kong.
I watched this at school and honestly this is my new fav movie
Just wondering but has anyone who commented ever read the story? I loved the story ,but I really can't bring myself to like this film.
The story didn't have a random stupid chick in it and we weren't told who won the hand to hand fight to the death at the end. The short story in-fact only had 4 characters, one of which was only present in the immediate opening. The other 3 were Rainsford, Zaroff, and Ivan. The story was better imo.
DJApok dummy its called a "short storry" for a reason
Anthony Crnkovich Yep! Agree totally. Fay Wray is awesome. I had a crush on her when I was little.
13 years later the U SS Indianapolis was torpedoed and sunk by a japanese submarine. The crew was attacked by the most devastating shark attacks in history.
I came here from ZODIAC. This was Arthur Leigh Allens favourite story and the inspiration for the Zodiac killings. Fascinating really
this film was shot reusing the sets and actors from king Kong while Kong was being filmed they alternated
The radio version is just as great.
I think it's even better!
"ah! it got me!"
Yep me too ! One of many short stories I had to read
for an Eng-comp class. This poor guy would surely be creeped if he'd seen all the horror movie's we've all seen.
An apt title, with any other
game the advantage is usually with the hunter,
it is the opposite here in this case, it's the quarry that has the advantage here.
After all these years later I still remember a word in the story's very last sentence - maybe it was the last word ! 'Repast'.
Lmao like how when he dies he somehow throws the arrow because OBVIOUSLY when someone dies any belongings that they have in their hands is automatically thrown out of them...
Funny he's mute but he knew how to smile. First red flag.
Freshamaaannnnn hype
who else was watching this with your classmates after reading the book and was like “wait a minute i don’t remember this happening!”
I thought the movie was pretty good given the year it was made.
It was great, and the year has nothing to do with it. Many of the greatest movies ever made were filmed in that same period. Are you very young? Too many today think a movie is all about special effects. This is the generation of low IQ, uneducated, marching morons.
im here bc the take mentioned this in thier killer rich ppl video tysm for posting so good!!
There is no woman in the book
Great movie. Thank you for uploading.
In my school we read the short story and we're now watching the film
same
Same here
Our school is too
+Jamayah Giles This was published in "Boys' Life" magazine(I believe) around 1971-72...read it then an absolutely loved the story...a made-for television movie loosely based on this story came out about the same time (1974) starring Sam Bottoms and Andy Griffith..."Savages"... www.imdb.com/title/tt0072116/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_46
i am not in school and i watched this movie by my free will!
I was watching the colorized version on Prime and couldn’t stand it.
Plot twist: While filming the actors were really running for their lives
Haha 😄
who's here not because of school but because you like vintage movies? XD
I would love to know how they filmed the shipwreck without CGI
With model ships , I suppose
One of my favorites from Seton Academy New Orleans. THIS is my exercise in emotional connection folks 🎃
Their voices though😂😂😂
This is great. I call this the original slasher film.
Crappy ending - Zaroff should've won because he was cooler
But he had one major flaw, pride.
Then what would be the point to the whole story?
You’re right he was much more pretty too, like huh?
stupid
Well, that wasn’t be as much a satisfying ending , would It
