I've been contemplating a deliberate return to B&W-first photography for some of the reasons you highlighted - especially that colour is a distraction that takes my mind away from composition and light. This was extremely valuabler to me. Thanks, Ewen.
@@peterfritzphoto That's a shame. Looks like a nice bit of engineering that camera, surprised there's no control over picture style or colour profile in body.
Thank you so much! I'm just starting out and still finding my feet here on UA-cam. Really appreciate hearing from people who enjoying the channel. Have a great day and I hope you like my new videos planned for the next few weeks and months.
Excellent images. Not only a good reminder of the importance of light but also of using camera settings with purpose rather than a flat iPhone capture of a scene
One of the challenges with learning to shoot with a narrow depth of field is that not everyone buys a fast lens these days. It's a chicken and egg situation!
Ahhhh yes there's a touch of sepia tone applied to my video, and also when processing B+W stills. I like a warm black and white in preference to cool :)
Awwww thankyou Jeremy! I'm still learning how to be myself here on UA-cam, really appreciate the encouragement. Hope to see you around here in future :)
Really like your view on shooting bw and with a large aperture. I've always enjoyed this look but have often felt like doing so is an amateurs way of adding a professional look to images. Then again, who cares if you are creating work for your own pleasure and not others? Anyway great video and great advice.
Thankyou so much Niklas. I think the more we practice working in B+W the more we gain confidence with it. As we get to understand it better B+W starts to feel more expressive, and less like an Instagram filter!
Perfect material. Thank you for the information that is extremely valuable to me. The passion with which you share your knowledge and experience has helped me in my work with travel and documentary photography. Kind regards Longin.lipski
Lovely to hear from you Longin. I'm still getting familiar with UA-cam and the format, but am enjoying the chance to share some photos and hear from people like you. Thankyou :)
Imteresting process for capturing in B/W. I'll have a go at applying some of your tips to my B/W photography 📸 I've added your channel, hopefully you'll connect with another creator? 👍
Thanks for dropping by and I hope you get inspired to delve deeper into the joys of B+W :) Ironic that now we have all this amazing digital tech in our hands we can finally get back to enjoying monochrome photography!
@@EwenBell I have been doing some digital B/W but I also picked up an old Canon EOS500n slr film camera with a 28-80mm zoom lens for £20 and put a roll of Ilford Hp5 through it, my first roll of B/W film since I used that in the 1970s!! So for me it's like capturing those old family holiday photos all over again! 😊👍
Thanks Ewan, I went out shooting this evening and tried your set up tips. It worked so well, I was seeing my compositions so much clearer. 😊
Marvellous!
Love how you’re in BW brother, nice attention to detail
Thanks Steven :)
Thanks Ewen. Enjoyed your video.
Hey Mary. Great to see you here and I hope you're doing well and enjoying lots of lovely photography :) Glad you enjoyed this video.

Thankyou again Peter :)
It's a good mode to setup on one of your custom dials.
@@EwenBell Sadly, I can’t do it with my X2D. I’d love to have even just a mono preview on-screen, but sadly, I have to do the whole thing in post.

@@EwenBell I agree. But that said, the colours straight out of camera are gorgeous.
FYI Have dropped you an email. Might chat a little further when you get a chance.
First time on your channel. I really liked your approach. Just subscribed.

Great advice. Just starting your book and it’s making me think differently about my photography. Oh, and just bought a 50mm f1.4 prime.😉
Awwwww that's marvellous! On both accounts :) Thanks John.

Your entire video has a creamy yellow look to it. I kind of like it. Do you shoot your black and white like this? Again I like it.

Beautiful photos, great advice and meticulously presented. Thanks!
My pleasure!
