True but they're always a Black or White Mage scroll. Even Scholar Schemas and Geomancer's elemental spells technically qualify as White or Black magic. Red Mage has always struggled to find its own identity in the Final Fantasy series but XI did it best becasue they gave it a lot of support and enfeebling spells plus enough healing/elemental magic to cover in a pinch with a "Traditional party." Once people started Ninja tanking Bard and Red Mage basically became mandatory. Square Enix responded to the community embracing Ninja as a tank by nerfing shadow tanking in some desperate attempt to force the community back to meatshield tanking. My biggest complaint about XI in the early to mid 2000's was that Square Enix kept patching the game to force the community to play as they wanted instead of listening to the community and changing the game to fit how we want to play or address issues that drove us to embrace Shadow Tanking. XIV feels likey they learned this lesson while also clearly establishing who does what in terms of party roles. Now, if only XIV would stop teasing us with BLU and show the job some goddamn respect...
You used to be able to Pull a mob with carby, and even if it linked a bunch of mobs, just /release an only the first mob would come after you.. but SE nerfed that a while back.
In 75 cap WotG, SMN/SCH gave you options similar to Brady's beautiful vision for SMN/BLM. The Arts gave you B+ skill, which gave you a reasonable chance of landing spells vs non-HNM mobs with some +skill gear and merits. Accession Aspir in Dyna is still one of my fondest memories, not to mention the crowd control possibilities you could have with /SCH (on both SMN/SCH and WHM/SCH). I don't remember ever nuking with Dark Arts, but definitely used enfeebles from time to time.
Guide came out before the level 20 summon quests. Also, before Scholar came out, my White Mage used sub Summoner for most end-game content. Even then I actually resisted leveling scholar for a while due to the MP buff and auto refresh /smn gave but once I tried /sch I never went back...the advantages just eclipsed /smn to a ridiculous degree (cheaper/faster white magic, black magic that could actually land - loved being able to Aspir & Drain things more than once every 10 minutes - , sublimation providing sleep immunity as well as a mini form of convert...).
I only ever used elemental spirits for using elemental siphon to replenish mp on the fly. The trick is casting the right one that coincides with the vana'diel day to boost the amount of mp recovered when casting elemental siphon.

This is a bit of a necrobump, but on a private server, my sub of choice is SCH for SMN. It basically lets you do what this guide suggests /blm. The other benefit is dispel, and sleep that actually land, and, having sublimation never hurts either. I mostly mention because on this private server, SMN is one of the go-to jobs to level first, but a lot of people really underestimate /sch haha.

It was hard to find party's as summer's but I learned how to make my own party's a long time ago so instead of just waiting for invites like some people did and waiting like 3 days i made my own party. I ended up having to main heal with my summer but I made it work.
I remember soloing Bombs with carby for super max EXP. Depending on the camp and how often they Self Destruct it was more EXP then any party could provide.
Lol For me it was like Ferreous Coffin as Galka in the old days. The demand for white mages was so high as SMN you were just healing and never even got to play SMN as it should had been until end game. For the longest time us Galka suffered getting parties as SMNs. It changed I’d say late COP era. Brady Games was wrong even Galka were squishy as SMN. Good gear was tougher to come by because of the expense. The first astral ring was everything omg! So when he got RSE that was even better. I think I had my RSE forever lol for healing situations before AF. I still have the guide too but my copy is missing some pages and not in good shape lol.
Being forced to get far enough FF11 to get pictures of summons especially for a team probably under some time crunch sounds like a hell to the common joe-blow
After unlocking summoner I got it to 15 in the dunes but it was super boring only having carbuncle. I dropped it for a long time to level up my bard to 75 and do two rounds of avatar fights and unlock Fenrir. It took a very long time but it was a blast having all the critters at your disposal. When FF14 came out I was very disappointment by their interpretation of summoner. I understand there are lore reasons behind it but it was still very disconcerting.
Yup till this day we still have not received a proper Summoner in an online FF game. FFXI's was nothing like summoner in the console games because they could NOT do damage worth a shit. In FFXIV they can do damage, but it's just... not cool like the consoles and well yeah... they don't even look like summons as you mentioned lol.
I do wish Summoner sub Black Mage was great, would give strong Rydia vibes and when I think of Summoner in the context of Final Fantasy she's the first that typically comes to mind.
I loved this. Do Dark Knight next! That one always amped me up and made me so pumped to play the class. If you do, maybe I'll support you on Patreon. ;)
appreciate your vids and how you accurately capture the culture and overall thought process everyone had on every job. However, there is so much elitism out there even in the private servers For example, "Pup is joke DPS" I've proven that wrong on Eden soo many times.... Beaten, rangers, Drgs, Sams, Wars, etc on Dmg in bird parties as Pup Some jobs require more gear/food/brains than just wacking things with a katana... I bet SMN has DPS potential need to try it out
this game was insanely difficult in 2004. Progression was so slow and getting around was a journey every time. Its what made it great and unfortunately we will never be there again
I fell In love with summer from final fantasy X and I don't know it just not as good as final fantasy X summer many be I enjoy the story about a summer going thru a massive quest to obtain the Aeons.
Do you think maybe the guide was talking about the elemental spirits when speaking about Black mage? I know that my elemental spirits were very powerful in the magic that they cast. Right up to the ancient magic when I was at 75. Just a thought.
Red mage always rocks even if it's always been kinda an awkward underdog in all ff until ff14. But summoner is sick. Don't think the stock music was necessary in this video however. Love your content and steams tho, only played 11 til limit break 3. wish 14 could have the same immersive feel as 11, but 14 has always been a lot more fun, accessible and appealing especially when having to work irl. The 11 grind is too high. On the other hand I wish there were private servers for ps2 for the novelty with 11.
Mike S I came back recently but following the wiki to blast through lvls is less charming. I get too distracted by the rest of the game and don't have enough time unfortunately... hope one day I can though :')
I was not a fan of taru mages back in the day when I played regularly, because of their HP. I would always prefer hume and mithra over taru. For whm and rdm I would also prefer elvaan, since they're mostly mnd based and max MP is less relevant for them as they can't really "heal" up MP for very long durations at a time. This is all based on lvl 75 meta. As blm, you have to consider hate management. Same with smn and sch to an extent. As the main healer, no matter the job you also have to manage hate, but on top of that you also have to be willing to die for your tank. The tank is in almost all the cases, more important to keep alive than the main healer. Sch, smn, blm, rdm, brd and pld can all main heal decently in a single fight if they have to, but if your tank dies, things will just snowball out of control, as your backup will struggle to maintain hate and take more dmg, which will lead to your healer taking more hate. If your tank failed at mitigating dmg enough to prevent the main healer from getting hate, your secondary tank will inevitably recreate the same situation. Being able to take hits is part of the job as a healer imo. Rdm is the only mage job that I would say taru is the best at. They're mediocre in an exp environment, but for soloing and tougher battles, those int based spells and the convert ratio is very important. For blm or sch nuking, taru may be the best in ideal situations, but the thing is that you're often holding back anyway, and a hume is much more likely to survive if they gain hate.
To be fair, even if the guide came out after certain releases, the time it was written might not have had all that information. But... I'm not defending the guide. heheh

@@paddyotterness I played RNG back then, and was still on my way to 75 when the nerf hit. I never got to play during the heady days of RNGs being overpowered monsters, but speaking from experience after the fact, it wasn't so bad after the nerf. You just had to play differently from the commonly accepted wisdom and go /WAR and not /NIN. /NIN was such a waste of a subjob. Essentially all you got was dual wielding, which was worth around 7 Racc/Ratk (assuming offhand Francisca). Shadows were okay, but you should really just not get hit in the first place. /WAR gives you a flat +10 Ratk, plus Warcry and Berserk. If you went /NIN, that was a _really_ costly way to pick up 7 Racc. The only con to /WAR was that you have to spend a few minutes in every pickup group explaining that no, you're not on /WAR by mistake and yes, it is better than /NIN. You could also get quite a bit more damage by stacking STR in addition to AGI, but most rangers I saw didn't value it at all and would try to tell me I was wrong and it didn't contribute to either white damage or WS damage. So nice we have the wikis these days. No more arguing with people over damage calculations.
/Sch just made them better at healing, they were always going to be healer in parties. They were just weaker heals since cures came from the sub job, but they had avatar aoe heals and buffs to make up for it. Scholar did wonders in giving them a buff though.

Red Magic is not a thing!! It's black or white magic that indeed a RDM has access to or sometimes exclusive. You can also see it because each type of magic has their own animation.... What animation is Red Magic?!
OMG....i really miss my book now...i can't believe i didn't try to keep it... Please if anyone knows how to get a good second hand one and not crazy expensive plz let me know!! Thanks!!
Hmmmm...if we were to go by the in game skills menu, there is no "red magic" skill. There's blue, dark, divine, elemental, enfeebling, enhancing, healing, summoning, ninjutsu, singing, string, wind, geomancy, and handbell. Yes a lot of enfeebling spells are only Red Mage, but....the game never calls it red magic.
Split all the hairs ya want but RDM are the best at Enfeebling and Enhancing skill therefore they can be considered "Red Magic". I guess buffs and debuffs fall into the "Red Magic" school of magic even though the game doesn't technically classify it as "Red" magic.
@@ZoddtheGod I'm not splitting hairs the game literally does not call any of it red magic XD I don't disagree with you, but the question was if anything was actually referred to as red magic
Off the top of my head, the only time I can recall there ever being specific red magic was in Final Fantasy on the NES; Red Mage/Wizard did have spells specific to them and the spell slot system made picking and choosing which spells to take a mess. Some of the spells didn't even work properly or at all.

When I started playing during the PS2 release, Fenrir was out and the CAP was 75.
Check the back of the book, but I think the solo quests were Misc quests
It wasn't at PS2 release.
It was added later.
the smn parties in Korokola tunnel, b4 abbysea were amazing
My favorite thing in this guide. A PLD and DRK can duo the whole game with no other support lol.
I do wish Summoner sub Black Mage was great, would give strong Rydia vibes and when I think of Summoner in the context of Final Fantasy she's the first that typically comes to mind.
Please do a video for all jobs descriptions from this guide, i love it. lol
I loved this. Do Dark Knight next! That one always amped me up and made me so pumped to play the class.
If you do, maybe I'll support you on Patreon. ;)
I think it’s time to talk about the mystical “buttersheep” o.o
appreciate your vids and how you accurately capture the culture and overall thought process everyone had on every job.
However, there is so much elitism out there even in the private servers
For example, "Pup is joke DPS"
I've proven that wrong on Eden soo many times.... Beaten, rangers, Drgs, Sams, Wars, etc on Dmg in bird parties as Pup
Some jobs require more gear/food/brains than just wacking things with a katana...
There is a NPC in one of the WIndurst schools that mentions Red Magic, a combination of White and Black Magic that cannot be achieved otherwise.
Ah the Brady game guide. My cousins use to call it my bible
Speaking of BST, you should do that one next.
You're remembering the 2005 FFXI. Check out the 2020 FFXI, and the grind isn't to bad.
Red Magic is a thing in Vana'diel. Go talk to all the teachers and students at the magic school in Windhurst.
This was the greatest thing to read while taking a 💩
You are the best! Love the content keep it up
I am sure Brady Games translate a japanese guide and repack it as an english guide lol
To be fair, even if the guide came out after certain releases, the time it was written might not have had all that information. But... I'm not defending the guide. heheh
I swear the Brady game guide was intended for tonnberry server.. Your sub is matched to your main 😎
The Brady guide was a necessary for me back then. This game did not hold your hand
I had to use it constantly!
Huntin 4 Games When I started out I had no idea how to exit sandy... found ghelsba outpost killed hundreds of orcs dropping fire crystals and never knew about auto stacking feature... lost thousands of potential Gil selling stacks of fire crystals...*
Long time no see Truth Seeker. Same here lol. Then everyone was like Khazam.com! Before Wikipedia.
Nice to have maps for areas
when i think of all the things that SE nerfed away, i realize that SE has been doing a massive 18 year troll experiment and we will all be on youtube as the jokes.
Making me wanna re sub glad I got the ultimate collection on standby 😁
Oh hell yes
Late but this was great!
Excellent bro
Happy you're feeling better, the flu hit my family like a brick
Thanks!
As a elvaan smn/sam with hasso was lot of fun ws for days lol
EDEN private server is back up!!
/sch is actually the way to do damage ... or healing tbh as summoner.
/Sch just made them better at healing, they were always going to be healer in parties. They were just weaker heals since cures came from the sub job, but they had avatar aoe heals and buffs to make up for it. Scholar did wonders in giving them a buff though.
As RED MAGIC they meant Enspells.
Sure these are RDM specific ( which is probably what they mean) but in game they’re considered Black magic aren’t they??
Huntin 4 Games Did some digging, I found all kinds of meaning but none never really answer the question... So I’ll go with, A set of spells capable of bringing a mixture of both Black and White as one into the fight but not consider either when lvl, AKA Enhancing Magic. Ehhh this gave me a headache 🤕 let me know if anyone comes up with something better.
I love the little intro now, could use some title graphics?
Great idea!
Yea... I wasn't dodging shit as a mithra smn
Hey Hunter, what is a wind spirit? Never heard of that mob before.
red magic definitely a thing. when I was a whm/blm back in the day (2005) I wish I had access to Refresh, Phalanx and Dispel.
Red Magic is not a thing!! It's black or white magic that indeed a RDM has access to or sometimes exclusive. You can also see it because each type of magic has their own animation.... What animation is Red Magic?!
Unlicensed Nuclear Attack Squirrel Activated.
Red magic was a RDM skill in ffv
The en spells are red
Well I mean in the aspect that they’re RDM specific, but they’re still black magic!
OMG....i really miss my book now...i can't believe i didn't try to keep it...
Please if anyone knows how to get a good second hand one and not crazy expensive
plz let me know!! Thanks!!
lol wind spirit
Ugh I know, so shameful
It seems like the Brady Games crew fought EM or T as a group. Might explain why they suggest subs with weird acc failures.
I think Enfeebling magic is classified as "red magic".
Oh man. I remember the infamous brady games guild. Some of the info was kinda useful but the entire things was almost nonsensical at times.
I stopped playing in 2005? Ish so I don't really remember a lot but can someone explain to me why Blm wouldn't be a valid subjob?
Would love to play my summoner again but cant remember my play online id lol
Call SE support service. They can help find it for you. Just need to give them some info and they can pull it off.
@@WiggleBabies ill give it a try thanks
Off the top of my head, the only time I can recall there ever being specific red magic was in Final Fantasy on the NES; Red Mage/Wizard did have spells specific to them and the spell slot system made picking and choosing which spells to take a mess. Some of the spells didn't even work properly or at all.
Red magic is a FF thing. Refresh is a giid example
There is no red magic, but there is brown magic.
This is Tom Brady had he not played football and played FF 11 instead
Lmao I’m worried you’ve never seen me play XI, more fumbles than touchdowns
@@Huntin4GamesChannel hahaha! I think I have partied with you one time randomly on eden. Didn't know it was you when I was exping with you though : P
Guessing you didn't own the first brady guide that only went to level 50
Extra Job MIGHT be Sub Job?
Ya maybe? Couldn’t really figure out what they meant
@@Huntin4GamesChannel I doubt they even played the game to be honest, they probably outsourced the info...
Chrisfragger1 I remember that, they mean advanced jobs
