  • Lately I've see too many stories of wheels working loose and this was a common thing with Land Rovers and alloy wheels when I used to be in the trade. I used to hammer this home with my apprentices and in this bonus video that I made in the spring, I'll describe how you can best avoid it with a few simple instructions.
If there is one thing I will say - you MUST use a torque wrench and not an air hammer - they might make a load of manly noise and sound like they could snap the lugs off, but you have no idea how tight your nuts are afterwards.

Bob, what model and year is your Vario? 6 or 8 series? Cheers Matey!

Hi Bob, great vid. Very informative! I just had my rear wheels torqued up to 320nm today by a mobile fitter. Does this seem a little high to you? Its essentially same van as yours and torqued far higher than what is recommended on your own

Hi Nic. Thanks for the compliment. There are two sizes of wheel nut depending on the year. Mines an earlier one with m14 stud (19mm nuts) which Mercedes say tightens up to 180nm. Later models have a slightly larger m18 stud (sorry, don’t know what size but) that the book says should be 250nm. So on that basis, I’d say that 320nm is a little over the top.
