If that tug company is anything like my old client, they'll raise it from the bottom and refab it. Since it's in port, I'm sure it has to be removed anyways. Their company had a 1800's tug that they just put a new powerplant in. They're extremely tough boats.
Well this one is broken
They knew it was sinking 6 months ago and didn't do anything then why bother oil and diesel will kill small salmon in the bay
@justintime753 eh not really its all steel. They'll use air bags to float it back up enough to get it to a lift dock weld the holes shut and refloat it.

Yeah, this is really hard to watch. Heartbreaking.
As a captain (and just as a person with a heart) this is sad to see. At a minimum they should have prepared it for an artificial reef and towed it out to a safe area and given her a whole new life
I came here to say that! Why didn't they drag it out to deeper water so at least it's not a navigational hazard now?
I was wondering, why was she so close to the docks??

For years my husband dreamed about getting a retired tug to rehab and live aboard. This video would make him so sad. As someone else said, all she needed was some love.
The problem is that because of what you just saw …. a normal person can’t afford the insurance on a 80 year old boat , not to mention a place to keep it.
Needed some love and about $200,000.
Come to think of it, i could use those things too. Note to self. I now identify as a half sunken tug boat.
I live on a 38' sailboat in the Keys. Something like that tug would be really roomy with a ton of options but it's maintenance and dockage would be insane. Plus that's all you do is maintenance, you'd know every parts guy one a first name basis.
I feel the same as your hubby though, I would love to have that amount of space. We live in about 220 Sq feet.

I work in a shipyard in Canada and we get American boats in our shipyard.
Americans don't seem to have any laws about required maintenance. When we bring their boats up, they are covered in barnacles like they have been in the water no stop for ten years. In Canada it is required by law for a commercial boat to drydock every 5 years maximum.
I appreciate your guys' high standards and care for ships. Seattle and Tacoma have huge amounts of these kinds of ships sitting around.

@@cherigoodrich782 Sometimes its not even worth that. An old work boat like that would cost several times more than a new one to restore to a workable condition. Issues like hull repair, bringing up to code, getting parts on motors that are 50 years old. The list goes on. Tugboats are not pleasure yachts.
@@ligarsystm , ok, I gotcha. Like I said, never owned a boat, so obviously don't know alot, such as the information you gave me. I appreciate you saying what you did and that totally makes sense. years ago a private recovery business sued the coast guard for preventing a boat from sinking. The courts held that the CG could only help the people, not the vessel itself because "the government" would be "taking" the revenue away from the salvage company. So now, all they can do is watch.
@@mrl22222 Got a case name or a docket number?
@@mrl22222 Yeah I've done some looking and this is hard cap unless you have a citation to case law.
First the coast guard is a branch of the government. Who you can only sue if it meets the requirements *the government* has set forth.
Second I was unable to find ANYTHING about the coastguard getting sued for saving someone
Third the onlything remotely close is that in *1985* the coast guard issued a policy of only rescuing boats in danger instead of giving free tows to everyone that ran out of gas.
in 1985. This has been the standard for nearly 40 years. The coastguard likely let this one sink because it wasn't worth the risk to life to keep the vessel afloat given out (relatively) easy it is to salvage vessels that sank at dock

Put them down and do what? Energy drinks don't give you enough power to get under the ship and hold it back up.
Sad to see her go like that! Such a cool old boat. There should be an "abandonment" law. If you don't dry dock your vessel after a certain amount of time or neglect it, that marina has the right to auction it off. Sometimes things are so obvious yet aggravating. SAD!
Laws like that already exsist. That vessel became the property of the marina shortly after the original owner stopped paying to store the boat because it became a poor investment. The marina then becomes liable for it and it's nothing but a cost for them. A lot of the laws that are intended to protect us and the environment make doing the right thing so insanely expensive that people end up having to chose self preservation over following the law. As far as thebauction part, look online. BOAT stands for bust put another thousand. It's unbelievable expensive to own something like this and when we shut down an economy and put people out of business, you'd have to be crazy to make such a large investment in an object that operates in an industry with such a high overhead and strict regulation.
