  • The people at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden are doing a great job with their Community Kitchen Garden. They provide fresh vegetables to several groups around Richmond, Virginia. The garden continues to improve each year. This is a walk thru tour of what they have growing right now. We'll try to go back in a couple months and get an update of the progress.

Bobby, today someone told me that I'm the one that got them started doing hydroponics. Well guess what? You are the one that got me started doing hydroponics. Thanks so much!

Funny enough Bobby and you (Jeb) got me started hahahaha, I am about 90% done building the greenhouse and will then install the hydroponics and kratky beds :) So thanks to both of you!

My thanks for getting me into hydroponics and "more than hobby"-level food gardening in my backyard (and my garage...and my patio...and soon part of my front yard) go out to these UA-cam instructors/entertainers: mhpgardener (Dutch Bucket and Kratky hydroponics, greenhouses), Jeb Gardener (Kratky hydroponics), Khang Starr (Kratky hydroponics, grow rooms, peppers), and Albo Pepper ( DIY Sub-Irrigated Planters, worm castings, container gardening, urban growing maximization). It's amazing how much I have learned from just these four guys (basically a master class on growing plants).
If any of you are ever wondering if you're making a difference: you are.

My first set up is similar to yours, Jeb! I'm loving Kratky. However I'm planning on building a rail system similar to Bobby's in my new apartment. Small (hydroponic) world.

Glad you made it over there. I live about 15 miles from that area and have never dropped by. Been watching your videos for years and you've helped me out quite a bit. Me being a 100% Disabled Veteran, I'm glad you're continuing your videos since sometimes watching what your up to is all I'm able to do. Please don't stop! Many thanks!

Glad to see you doing videos again. I grew up in Richmond not far from Ginter. We would go there occasionally in the spring etc. My mother's memorial service was held there as she enjoyed the place. She has a bench there with a plaque we all chipped in to purchase. Glad to see they are doing so much with the vegetable gardening these days.

Bobby, we have a Community Veteran's Garden in Caldwell, Idaho. Its built raised beds for wheel-chair access for the vets to have some fun growing some produce and getting out. It's a nice set up. That's a nice labeled garden there. Thanks for sharing!

We're gearing up to do these here in Omaha to help out our developmentally disabled population....along with an indoor hydro operation for year around production....everyone is SO excited about it...and whatever produce my clients and their families, and our staff don't consume, will be donated to area food banks.

Hi Bobby, I'm growing the aswad eggplant for the 1st time this year. The guy at the garden shop told me they are an Iraqi variety so they're supposed to hold up in the heat. he also told me they can make a 3 lb eggplant. that seems a little strange to me because I thought eggplant were like squash - you want to pick them when they're smaller to get the best taste. I dont know alot abut cooking but Ive been told eggplant get bitter if they go too long. Thanks for your Vids!

Great tour, thanks! The galvanized tanks and panels look great and seem like a good idea, but they can leach dangerous amounts of zinc into the soil and it can end up in the produce. Using anything galvanized in aquaponics can kill all your fish, and pretty quickly. Zinc toxicity is so dangerous in fact that you shouldn't even put galvanized screws / bolts / nails in your mouth to hold them instead of using a pouch. Definitely something to be aware of for gardens.

OMGosh...Richmond, Va. Mhpgardner.....I was born here and have all my immediate family there, but know live at the beaches in Tampa/St Pete, Fl and visit a couple times a year. In fact, almost went up last wknd and would've loved to meet you. I probably would've been upset knowing you were so close to our families home near here. I've chatted w/ you before. My dads family is from Kittrell and Henderson, N.C. as you stated where you are or were! I'm hope to see more posts from you in the near future. I thought you were invited to travel internationally to help set up your growing methodologies, but I may have you confused w/another youtuber. Take care!
